SNAPSHOT After a period of significant growth in recent years, Taranaki’s rate of growth in guest nights involving commercial accommodation outlets such as hotels, motels and backpackers, eased in the recent half of 2018, stabilising at this heightened level. New Plymouth District has continued to outperform the New Zealand growth rate, (3.2% compared to 1.9%), however, Stratford and South Taranaki, whilst recording more subdued results for 2018 (-3% and -2.5% respectively) have seen visitors staying longer (up 3.8% in Stratford; South Taranaki up 8.2% and 2.4% growth in New Plymouth), as opposed to the decline experienced nationally (-0.5%). International visitors to the region comprise a small but increasingly important part of our visitor mix with the majority coming from Australia and the UK. Estimates of visitor spend in the region have continued to increase, with rates of growth at higher levels than many other New Zealand regions. This suggests the value proposition of Taranaki as a visitor destination is continuing to grow.
