rom the varied outdoor offerings set against the region’s spectacular mountain, bush or coastal backdrops, to the thriving art, culture, music and café scene, Taranaki offers something for everyone all year-around: families, kids, garden and nature fans, music and art lovers, foodies, adventurers and more. It’s no wonder Lonely Planet voted Taranaki one of the top two regions in the world to visit in 2017. Taranaki’s outdoor life is dominated by its mountain and surf breaks. Locals love telling you it’s one of the few places you can surf and ski on the same day. The 105km road trip from New Plymouth to Hāwera around the
mountain on Surf Highway 45 will take you past some of New Zealand’s best surf breaks and a stunningly rugged coastline. Surf Highway 45’s laid-back culture has given rise to artist and artisan studios, eclectic shops and cosy cafés. At Hāwera get onto State Highway 3 and come back to New Plymouth, stopping for lunch at the Stratford Mountain House and a walk through the gnarly beauty of the Goblin Forest. The mountain’s creative influence radiates out from its base, offering a journey through studios, galleries, and public art. Taranaki has an extensive local creative scene. New Plymouth’s renowned Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/ Len Lye Centre blends stunning
architecture with contemporary art. While Hāwera’s Tawhiti Museum and Traders and Whalers exhibition offers an incredible journey through Taranaki’s history that brings the region’s fascinating past to life. If you’re a foodie looking for something new, just out for a leisurely lunch, or after some fish and chips on the beach as you watch the sun go down, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Taranaki’s café, restaurant and bar scene is exploding. From 100% local produce-inspired menus, gourmet burger bars, courtyard tapas dining, award-winning brew houses and family favourites to keep the kids happy. Taranaki has something for all tastes and seasons.
unsurpassed views of the city it’s a short (but steep) climb up Paritutu Rock.
Take a trip deep into Taranaki’s rural heartland along the Forgotten World Highway New Zealand’s oldest heritage trail. Trace ancient Māori trails and pioneering farm tracks from Stratford to Taumarunui. Geographic, historical and scenic points of interest line the 155km route through the breath-taking Tangarakau Gorge. Be warned, it’s compulsory to stop at the Whangamomona Hotel for a burger and to get your passport stamped at New Zealand’s smallest and only “Republic”. The region’s legendary landscape offers countless opportunities to explore the outdoors, from New Plymouth’s Coastal Walkway to the more challenging and exhilarating Pouakai Crossing, there is a walk for all fitness levels
and, don’t worry, there are plenty of kid-friendly options. If you’re not sure what to do next, ask a local. New Plymouth people are rightly proud of their 52 hectare Pukekura Park right in the middle of the city. If you’re looking for more adventure and
Further afield in Inglewood, kids will love the Fun Ho! Toy museum. After that, head south to Stratford to catch the glockenspiel clock tower, which “performs” at 10am, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm right in the middle of the town. At Eltham, ask locals for directions to the much loved “Cheese Shop” and at Hāwera take a wander through King Edward Park. Discover Taranaki, a place like no other that’s just around the corner.

The concepts and features displayed in the festival are realistically attainable,” says organiser Anne Clough. “We offer everything from cottage gardens to native gardens, highly structured to rambling and informal, whatever your taste in gardens there is something for everyone, and every garden has a personal story behind it, right down to the plants and the plantings, John Lucas, Chairperson says.

amasthe, welcome to our kitchen - a small Aotearoa sanctuary to the tantalising aromas and tastes of Southern India (Kerala style) cuisine. Locals and visitors to New Plymouth may recall our original flagship offering, under “Kathakali Restaurant”. While the name Kathakali is no more, the legend of fine Kerala cuisine in New Plymouth, cradled in Kathakali has grown-up into the sophisticated and modern offerings of its offsprings - Arranged Marriage New Plymouth and Arranged Marriage Palmerston North. The fusion of the local customs
and mana whenua of the local Iwi (Te Atiawa) with the local traditions of our (Sree’s and Jacob’s) birthplaces were a common thread woven together adroitly by local architect Murali Bhasker (principal of Boon Architects) in the Arranged Marriage name and fit-out. Key to our success since, is our unwavering mantra of providing our valued diners with an authentic Southern India dining experience at a truly affordable price. The friendly professional dispositions of our kitchen and front of house team in delivering on this mantra is harmonious, yet uncompromising. This is evidenced through our excellent

The coastal hamlet of Awakino is peaceful and picturesque. As soon as you arrive in this remote location, with just 15 houses and a hotel, you feel worlds apart and ready to slow down and relax.
The local area has classic west coast beaches, fishing, hunting, tramping, a golf course and is world famous in New Zealand for its whitebait. Take a stroll on the wide open black sand beaches, picturesque with Mt Taranaki in the background on a clear day. Try your hand at fishing for kahawhai at either the Mokau or Awakino river mouths, or snapper and gurnard from the beach; we can point you to our favourite spots. There’s also great kite or kontiki fishing, with massive
snapper landed for those who know where to go. The famous White Cliffs tramp is only a short drive away, or go for a walk to see the Three Sisters rock formations at low tide.
