Inspired by the most famous art prize in the world – UK’s Turner Prize – in July 2014, I started the Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary Art (the ‘Kuenyehia Prize”) , under the dis�nguished royal patronage of His Royal Majesty Nana Kobina Nketsia, Omanhen of Essikado Tradi�onal Area of the Western Region of Ghana. The objec�ve of the Kuenyehia Prize is to iden�fy, reward, promote and help develop Africa’s most outstanding ar�sts between 25 and 40, and to showcase and celebrate excellence in contemporary African Art. Star�ng in Ghana, our vision has always been pan-African – to create Africa’s Turner Prize. Like the Turner Prize, the Kuenyehia Prize seeks to raise the bar for African art by inspiring next genera�on African ar�sts to produce outstanding work that challenges and provokes, as well as a�racts both local and interna�onal audiences. In addi�on to prize money and materials, we support our ar�sts with access to art collectors, exhibi�ons, personal development training and an in-house crea�ve accelerator program. I am extremely proud of the contribu�on the Kuenyehia Prize has made to the art scene in Ghana, thanks to the support and commitment of our Board of Trustees (previously chaired by Senyo Kwasi Deh and currently co-chaired by Thelma Tawiah and Eli Kumekpor), the Advisory Board (chaired by Samallie Kiyingi) and key players on the art scene. Amongst other milestones, we have so far: • A�racted 265 compe�ng entries for one of 42 shortlisted places • Par�cipated in 3 interna�onal exhibi�ons and 3 interna�onal art fairs • Organised ten local exhibi�ons for our ar�sts • Invested over GHS 1 million in our ar�sts and our projects • Generated almost GHS 100,000 worth of transac�ons from our network for the benefit of our ar�sts • Provided significant visibility and exposure for each of our ar�sts which has translated into higher values for their work. In addi�on, three of our ar�sts (Gideon Appah, Bright Ackwerh and Isaac Addico) have gone on to be shortlisted for the pres�gious Barclays L’atelier prize with Gideon Appah winning a residency in Johannesburg. The pedigree and credibility of the jury we put together each year ensures that our winning ar�sts are judged according to the highest interna�onal standards. In 2016 our judging panel was chaired by Professor El Anatsui, the first African to be awarded the Golden Lion for Life�me Achievement – the highest honour to be bestowed on an ar�st. Other members of previous panels include interna�onally acclaimed ar�sts Professor Ablade Glover and Godfried Donkor, collectors Florence Benson, Gbenga Oyebode and Karim Ibrahim, art historian Charlo�e Langhorst and art educators Kwaku Boafo Kissiedu (Castro) and Dr. Dorothy Amenuke.
