EDITORIAL METAVERSE, BOATING AND THE TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTIONS OF THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.

The world is changing fast. The fast-paced digital evolution makes it easy and obvious to use applications that only yesterday seemed futuristic and that today are already part of our daily lives.

An unstoppable race for innovation then, which the pandemic has further speeded up, demonstrating

without fear of contradiction that modern communication tools are handy, reliable and within everyone's reach.

Smart Working, metaverse and boatingdistance learning, video conferencing, tutorials and digital information are no longer just neologisms, but activities that are part of our everyday life and that, above all, represent a still partially unexpressed need for a

more evolved, complete and functional digital iteration of modern needs.

It is in this scenario that we arrive at the Metaverse which, beyond the term itself, is nothing more than an environment capable of hosting all these 'new activities' natively. Stemming from the evolution of Web 2.0, the metaverse makes it possible to browse the web

by interacting with other people, with a decidedly improved user experience, breaking down all those barriers that individual applications still suffer from. A form of 'digital progress' that will have a disruptive effect in every sector because, as I often like to remind you, trying to resist innovation is a bit like trying to stop the waves of the sea with your hands.

In boating, then, as in real estate, the usefulness of this tool reaches very interesting peaks.

Moving a boat to have it visited by a small number of people, in a short period of time, is a cumbersome, costly operation that is subject to the changing moods of the weather. It is much simpler instead to have a yacht visited in augmented reality, perhaps wearing Oculus, and then send all the owners back for a real sea trial once the choice has been made.

But this is just one of the possible advantages, which, as you will understand for yourself, are virtually infinite, especially if you consider that the Metaverse is not limited to being able to replicate already existing activities but makes possible the emergence of new functions and opportunities.

It is for all these reasons that The International Yachting Media could

not avoid implementing, and quickly, this new communication channel.

Our space in the metaverse will in fact be presented as a world premiere during the boat shows in September and will have the task, on the one hand, of making all our magazines accessible in this new channel as well, and on the other, of enabling new and evolved forms of multimedia communication.

This space will also include a conference room where presentations of new boats, courses on sailing techniques and much more will take place.

An interactive space where attendees will also be able to participate, not just listen, regardless of the language spoken, either by the speaker or the audience. Yes, because, for some time now, the metaverse has had a native system for automatic simultaneous translation, with as many as 14 languages.

In practice, in the metaverse everyone speaks the language they want and everyone listens in their own language.

Is this science fiction? No, it's just progress moving forward, but if you don't believe it, you can always try to stop the waves of the sea with your hands ...

THE SEA TRIAL OF A QUEEN

It is hard not to be dazzled by the beauty of the new Absolute 56 Fly. Large, intriguing and endowed with decidedly streamlined lines, this yacht is also convincing for her ability to bring guests into communication with their surroundings, a great design work that Absolute Yachts has materialized and synthesized in this model.

The open sides, the barrier-free stern terraces and the huge windows, present both on the main deck and in the cabins, scream to the world the desire to live in contact with the sea, setting a new market standard, of which the new Absolute 56 Fly is the absolute protagonist.

A new way of interpreting the sea, then, on which the shipyard has taken a further step forward, also in sensory terms and in terms of environmental impact.

Thanks to the solar panels integrated on the T-Top, which alone provide about one and a half kilowatts and can therefore “sustain” the on-board services, it is possible to stay at anchor in absolute silence, without using the generator. The main deck windows are, not surprisingly, electrically openable, and the resulting natural air circulation is much more pleasant than air conditioning.

This series of innovations was such an irresistible temptation for us that we couldn’t wait to climb on board.

NEW ABSOLUTE 56 FLY SEA TRIAL

It’s easy to get out of the berth, the new Absolute 56 Fly evolves with millimetric precision, just a few ‘touches’ to the joystick and you’re immediately out in open water. We’re steering from the main deck and visibility is excellent in every direction, the windscreen and large side windows give an uninterrupted view, an important detail, to which the yard has paid just the right amount of attention.

Outside the marina I switch from the joystick to the throttles, putting them in single lever and engaging the active trim. This is the configuration I prefer for sea trials, with the electronics managing both the trim and the balance of the engine revs I can devote all my time to “listening to the boat”, to feeling how it moves on the water.

I accelerate and the hull immediately gets up on plane, at less than 12 knots. This yacht comes out of the water with

SEA TRIALS | ABSOLUTE 56 FLY 12 YACHT DIGEST 13 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022

impressive ease, almost effortlessly.

On the other hand, Absolute Yachts boasts the longest experience on the market in the use of IPS engines, and its specially designed hulls take advantage of geometries that are ideal for this type of propulsion. This is unequivocally confirmed by the consumption per mile which, for an 18-metre, three-deck boat, is always very low and, even as speed increases, remains almost constant.

The sea today is slightly rough, the wind produces a wave of about a metre in height which the Absolute 56 Fly, traveling at 19/20 knots, cuts through smoothly, with no noise or jolts: the cruising comfort is truly impressive.

I push the throttle all the way down but the result remains the same,

even at maximum speed, even at 28 knots against the wind and sea, this hull shows superlative qualities while, once again, I am pleasantly surprised by the consumption which, even in these conditions, never exceeds 8.7 litres per nautical mile travelled.

I try to turn without slowing down, the Absolute 56 Fly tilts a little and continues without decelerating, always exuding great safety.

Tempted by this behaviour, I decide to turn to maximum, the heeling increases but, once again, this hull manages to surprise me by sticking to its circular course, as if it were on rails.

I catch up with our waves, which now add to those of the sea, and prepare for impact but … but nothing because the boat simply does not care, and continues to go without impact, with an unprecedented level of comfort.

I get back on a straight course, drop the speed to 20/22 knots and enjoy the spectacle of the wind lashing the white crests of the waves.

This is how all boats should go, exactly like this.

THE NEW ABSOLUTE 56 FLY IN DETAIL

As mentioned above, the design effort made by the boatyard to develop a craft that was truly different from anything seen so far and capable of putting its guests in contact with the sea was enormous.

You only have to look at the stern to realize this, where two terraces, the one on the flybridge and the one in the stern cockpit, use remarkably wellcrafted modular furniture and the absence of fixed structures to create views of unparalleled beauty.

The same can be experienced as you walk around the main deck, where endless windows allow the eye to

sweep 360°, effectively eliminating the boundaries between inside and outside.

Here there is a large U-shaped sofa which, set against a second sofa on the side, creates an intimate space dedicated to socializing or watching the pop-up television. The galley is positioned at the edge of the sliding glass doors and, from here, easily serves both the exterior dinette and the interior.

Going up to the Flybridge, which in size and extension resembles that of a seventy-footer, we find a second lounge area distinguished by the presence of a 6/8-seater sofa and a bar unit complete with fridge, hob and sink. Aft, the modular sofas give the possibility of changing layout and function, depending on the needs of the moment.

Moving further forward, to port we find the two-seat helm station, while to starboard there is an L-shaped sofa and the huge flybridge sundeck.

Walking along the comfortable walkways, one reaches the bow where, in fact, another masterpiece of space rationalization has been achieved. The two opposing sofas, equipped with a central table and retractable lights, create a fourth lounge area that, ventilated when at anchor and reserved when in port, gives this yacht a luxury that can usually be found on much larger yachts.

20 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022
" Walking along the comfortable walkways, one reaches the bow where, in fact, another masterpiece of space rationalization has been achieved. "

The backrest of the bow sofa can also be folded down, extending the size of the bow sundeck.

The Master Cabin is a true five-star suite. Huge and positioned in the bow, it benefits from the largest windows on the entire boat, allowing the owner to enjoy a view of the outdoors that, quite frankly, is unmatched by any other vessel.

The master suite is also equipped with a walk-in wardrobe, a boiserie/ scritoire and a head that, overflowing and positioned by beam, is furnished with fine materials and strongly reiterates the position, now very high, that this yard has now achieved.

Even the Vip Cabin, which is in effect a second master, impresses with its level of finish and size.

The washbasin area is open to allow plenty of light to enter, while the toilets and shower cubicle are in separate rooms. Here too, as in the master, there is a central king-size bed equipped with side bedside tables and large walk-through spaces that make this cabin very welcoming indeed. Completing the sleeping area is a third twin-bedded cabin, whose dedicated

head also serves as a day toilet. The crew cabin, equipped with two single beds, wardrobes and a toilet complete with shower, is accessed via a private access from the aft companionway.

Here the shipyard has created a space that, given the ease with which this boat is steered, in the absence of a crew will certainly be the most popular with the owner’s children, who will then be able to return late at night without disturbing anyone on board.

THE FLAGSHIP OF TECNORIB WALKAROUND SERIES ON TEST

Hard not to be dazzled by the beauty of the Pirelli 50. Aggressive, extremely fast and luxurious, it is the new flagship of the TecnoRib walkaround series which, in just three years, has enjoyed worldwide sales success with its first two models: the Pirelli 42 and the Pirelli 35.

In fact, the family feeling is unmistakable and, in accordance with the design of the series, also characterizes the lines of the brand-new Pirelli 50, which here take on even more sporty and exciting overtones. A boat that we couldn’t resist testing thoroughly.

A DAY ABOARD

THE PIRELLI 50

Having the chance to test a boat for a full day is not a recurring situation. It is an optimal condition, where you can assimilate everything happening in real boat use, including transfers to the selected destinations, behaviour at anchor, the adrenaline of turns and so on.

This is what I am thinking about as we cast off and prepare to leave the Airport Marina, a condition in which the Pirelli 50 already reveals its first quality: it is a maxi-rib with a magnetic appeal.

It’s hard to go unnoticed aboard this one-off craft, people turn their heads, look at it and follow its slow pace with their eyes, as it sails slowly through the waters of the port. A bit like when

SEA TRIALS | PIRELLI 50 32 YACHT DIGEST 33 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022

a Ferrari passes by, it doesn’t need to run, you just look at it and you know it’s made for this. And the new Pirelli 50 is just like that, delivering adrenaline even when stationary.

The stern accommodates two Mercury Verado 600s which, as well as providing a good 1,200hp of thrust, thanks to the technology they have at their disposal, manage to make the manoeuvres of this 15-metre boat easy, with the joystick evolving effortlessly even in tight waters.

Out of the harbour I speed up, curious to get a feel for the characteristics of this twin-stepped hull designed by the famous Mannerfelt Design Team, a studio with a wealth of experience in the construction of stepped hulls. Speed increases but, even at 10/12 knots and with the trim at zero, probably the worst conditions for a maxi-rib, the boat remains flat, an undeniable sign of the system’s efficiency.

At 12 knots the Pirelli 50 gets up on plane, detaches the wake and accelerates naturally to over 20 knots, with an increase of just 500 RPM, almost as if it were developing no friction. Further increasing the RPM, the speeds increase quickly, a slight pressure on the electronic throttles and we’re up to 40 knots in no time, a very interesting cruising speed that the boat holds without any problem. Under the shelter of the large windscreen, even at this speed, the comfort is superb.

"

At 12 knots the Pirelli 50 gets up on plane, detaches the wake and accelerates naturally to over 20 knots, with an increase of just 500 RPM, almost as if it were developing no friction "

But now it’s time to get it on, so I slow down until I stop and then pull on the throttles ahead. The counter-rotating propellers bite into the water as the acceleration pushes me towards the seat. In just over 11 seconds we pass 30 knots and in less than 20 we reach the 50-knot mark, then, trimming carefully, we record a top speed of 51.8 knots. Not bad at all for a 15-metre maxi-rib.

I turn around and look at the wake, it’s flat! The Pirelli 50 practically moves no water. The hull creates a very efficient air cushion, which supports the weight of the maxi-rib, reducing friction and cushioning the passage over the wave.

I slow down to 30 knots and then turn decisively, the boat tilts and follows the course as if it were on rails. I accelerate violently while I’m still in a turn but the Pirelli 50 doesn’t care, it uses the power to increase speed and continues on the curved course I’ve given it without widening, without a single bump.

Really a great hull, very fast, comfortable and very, very safe.

THE PIRELLI 50 IN DETAIL

In just over 20 minutes, cruising in first class, we covered the 20 miles between Genoa Airport and Portofino. Perhaps this is exactly what the owner of a Pirelli 50 expects, fast and comfortable travel to dream destinations. And so we do, with the excuse of taking a few photos, stopping at Portofino, San Fruttuoso and then finally Santa Margherita where we stop for lunch.

At anchor, the size of the Pirelli 50 is noticeable, the boat is stable and the roll is always limited. In such conditions you can also appreciate the remarkable study of on-board circulation that the yard has developed for this model.

The Pirelli 50 takes the walkaround concept to its extreme, using all the walkways to create spaces that are ideal for their intended use. A clear example of this is the area where the eight-person dinette with opposing sofas has been masterfully created, with a service area with a central

SEA TRIALS | PIRELLI 50 42 YACHT DIGEST 43 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022

corridor that not only accommodates three fridges and a freezer, but also offers a “bar counter” overlooking this large lounge area. Further aft, a large sundeck has an additional transverse walkway which, despite the two outboards, creates a “wet area” that can be lived in with great comfort.

Thanks to the opposing sofas, the bow creates a second lounge area reminiscent of the “Portuguese bridge” layout typical of large yachts. The forward sundeck also has two comfortable chaise lounges that will certainly be some of the most popular places on the boat, even when underway.

" Whether at anchor or in port, the Pirelli 50 becomes a perfect, luxurious party machine "

Whether at anchor or in port, the Pirelli 50 becomes a perfect, luxurious party machine capable of entertaining a considerable number of people, who will be able to walk far and wide without ever getting in the way.

Below deck there are two cabins and a large head with separate shower which, depending on the owner’s requirements, can comfortably accommodate four people for a medium-range (fast) cruise.

Although, in my opinion, the best use of this super maxi-rib is exactly what we tried out today.

Performance, fun and adrenaline, partying at anchor and returning to port at sunset, flying over the water at 50 knots.

Emotions that only the new Pirelli 50 can give.

NOR-TECH 460 FLYER ‘S GOVERNMENT CUT GETAWAY BEAUTIFULLY INSANE –BRUTALLY INSANE

The high performance powerboat and yacht manufacturer Nor-Tech Boats did it again with hull number 4 of the custom-built 460 Flyer. It’s been called every name in the book from a Bugatti Chiron, to Daddy’s Caddy to a flying condo on water, but following my short-butsweet getaway through Government Cut (Miami’s manmade shipping channel) into the deep Atlantic for a series of take-your-breathaway turns, I would call it both: Beautifully Insane and Brutally Insane!

The Beautifully Insane half goes without saying. Not only does the stunning blue hue meld with South Florida’s cobalt-covered skies, it matches the owner’s limited-series Ferrari Monza SP2. But, the aesthetic connection extends beyond the color spectrum.

Perfectly balanced, a purity of styling and performance exist between the two powerhouses as if sculpted by the wind; whereas, the Monza SP2 roars over the roads, the Nor-Tech 460 Flyer soars over the swells akin to floating on clouds carried by the air.

Launched last November at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), the day-boat friendly edition lures you aboard with its inviting new open-bow layout, perfect for fun in the sun worshippers. Moving aft, unlike the previous three builds, the non-retractable hardtop allows shade seekers to savor their time at the stern.

Idle time passing through Biscayne Bay under the Port of Miami Bridge was spent with eyes glued to the twin Garmins at the port side helm station. Vigilantly watching speed and engine RPM rise, Norwegian captain Per Michelsen tells me – It handles well

and swallows the seas. It’s playful. It’s big. I mean really big, 25 guests fit comfortably with separate social areas, including three distinct zones for controlling the audio system. Even the kids love this machine; usually they migrate down into the cabin to do their own thing.

And to no surprise, my Brutally Insane descriptor refers to the ride – the Nor-Tech 460 Flyer ridicules rough water! Whether it was the four-foot rollers accosting us in every direction in the jam-packed channel between South Beach and Fisher Island, or running wide open at 124 km/h (77 mph) you simply do not feel the waves. No pounding. No rattling. Only flying… and lots of Smiling!

What’s more, if the need to go north of 128 km/h (80 mph) arises, adding a fifth 4.6 liter supercharged V8 outboard engine is too a possibility, just bump up the bank check of €1.78 million ($1.95 million) another €49,000 ($54,000).

THE FUTURE IS NOW

If you think that electric propulsion for boats is still fantasy, you are absolutely wrong. In fact, the new Greenline 40 Electric Drive marks a milestone in the development of this concept, delivering a trawler that is not only capable of being effectively used every day, but also of dramatically reducing the running costs of yachting.

Important statements that deserved to be verified first-hand. Which is why we drove to Portorož, Slovenia, to test the Greenline 40 Electric Drive in one of the three Test Centres that Greeline Yachts has around the world.

GREENLINE 40 ELECTRIC DRIVE SEA TRIAL

On our arrival, the Greenline 40 is there waiting for us, side-moored in the Grenline-reserved area of the marina. It is quite large for a 40-footer, and the generous volumes immediately underline the primary feature of this craft which, it is evident, is designed to be a perfect displacement “family cruiser”.

The ample space available in the bow, on the main deck and below deck, undoubtedly emphasize how it is possible to have, in just 12 metres, everything a family of 4/5 people needs for long-range cruising, in total comfort, with near-zero environmental impact and truly minimal costs.

The two 40 kW/h batteries are charged, the instrumentation reads 97%, we unplug the dock cable from the column, and we are ready to cast off the moorings. The electronic throttles are very precise and it is easy to get out of this corner berth. One blow to the bow thruster and we are off: a piece of cake!

GREENLINE 40 ELECTRIC 68 YACHT DIGEST 69 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

Out of the marina we go in absolute silence, our Greenline 40 Electric proceeding steadily on its course, without rolling, thanks to the stabilizers fitted as standard by the yard. At 5.4 knots we have a range of around 44 miles, which would be much more than we need to travel from one port to another on summer cruises, or simply to go for a swim in our designated anchorage.

At this speed, we consume 8.6 kW, or about 12 horsepower, which is very little to move the eight tonnes of this boat. This is undoubtedly due to the fluid dynamics studies carried out by the shipyard, which has created a hull specifically for displacement cruising, very different from that of planing trawlers, which on the other hand absorb a large amount of power to get out of the water.

The unit we’re testing today is optimized even in terms of weights, which is why it does not have a teak-finished teak. The latter, however, can be installed on demand, choosing from the wide range of customizable options available.

At around 7 knots, a very respectable cruising speed, consumption is around 20 kW and the range drops to 25 miles, which, all things considered, is still a nice range for cost-free cruising.

At 8 knots, i.e. already cruising above its theoretical hull speed, instantaneous consumption is around 35 kW and the range drops to just under 20 miles, while at full throttle the Greenline 40 reaches

11 knots, although, in my humble opinion, this is not the point of this boat, which is resoundingly made to cruise, which it does very well indeed, in displacement mode.

While we are underway, however, right above our heads, there are about two kW of solar panels that recharge the batteries and, if we wish, it is also possible to install a “range extender”, i.e. a generator that, depending on the power chosen, can increase the range at will, until it becomes practically unlimited.

What’s more, the shipyard offers the possibility of building the best configuration the owner prefers, depending on the intended use.

What would be mine? Well, since I spend a month at sea every year in addition to the weekends, rarely entering ports, I would opt for the installation of a generator, strictly variable speed, of

about 15 kW. Modern yachts are extremely compact, the average consumption would be between 2 and 4 litres/h, and the range would therefore be unlimited, even between 6 and 7 knots.

But I’m a bit extreme, I realize that, the vast majority of families who go cruising choose to spend the night in port so, in this case, all you have to do is plug in the quayside socket and the next day you are off again with 100% batteries, without even turning the generator on.

Even when at anchor, this Greenline 40 Electric shows great qualities. In fact, the yard has optimized all on-board consumption so that the panels alone are able to carry all the necessary load. There are two air conditioners, assuming there is a need for them given the large number of windows available, divided between the main and the lower deck, each with a consumption of 700W. The fridge is another great masterpiece, it is a domestic type (therefore huge) and consumes only 200W.

In short, a great way of going to sea, Greenline Yachts has created a system that borders on perfection and brings “green” yachting within everyone’s reach.

THE GREENLINE 40 ELECTRIC IN DETAIL

The level of workmanship, especially the cabinetry, is very high indeed. The shipwrights at the Slovenian yard are really expert, and this is evident from the joinings, the grain and, more generally, the ability to choose fine woods.

Safety is also an important factor, which the yard has developed well on board this boat. All the sidedecks, walkways and open surfaces, including those in the bow, are wide and protected by generously sized stanchions, raised handrails and checkrails.

The overall design of the Greenline 40, as we said, is devoted to comfortable stays at sea. Climbing on board from the stern we are greeted by a large cockpit which, by tilting the aft hatch, creates a single environment with the interior of the boat spread out over one huge level. Noteworthy is the galley that overlooks the cockpit, creating a wonderful convivial area and, implicitly, taking the cooking fumes out.

GREENLINE 40 ELECTRIC 80 YACHT DIGEST 81 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

The main deck houses a large L-shaped sofa that makes it possible to eat inside as well, and which, when contrasted with the cabinet on the starboard side from which the television comes out, creates a charming cinema area. Continuing towards the bow we find the helm station which, elevated, thanks to the omnipresent windows, enjoys great visibility, both when cruising and mooring.

Descending into the sleeping area we find a large master cabin with a central bed in the bow, of almost unthinkable

dimensions for a 40-footer. In fact, it has private access to the head, large wardrobes, a walking surface and also allows you to sleep on a king-size bed with your head facing forward.

Completing the lower deck is a second twin-bedded cabin, also generously sized, and a very large head with a separate shower stall.

In the bow, a huge sundeck takes advantage of the deckhouse rise to provide space for sunbathing. A worthy finishing touch to a boat that has been thought out in every detail by Greenline Yachts.

SEA TRIAL OF AN OUT-OF-ORDINARY BOAT

The new Scanner Envy 1200 is a craft of undisputed success. Originally unveiled at the last Venice Boat Show in its sterndrive version, it immediately won over the public, who was literally dazzled by these lines that manage to be both elegant and sporty. In our opinion, the outboard version, the one we had the chance to test exclusively today, is the perfect example of this combination, setting a new market benchmark.

We are obviously talking about the Scanner Envy 1200 HT Outboard which, in its “full white” version and powered by three stunning Mercury 450Rs, has literally won us over. Let’s find out why.

SCANNER ENVY 1200 HT OUTBOARD SEA TRIAL

I always feel a certain enjoyment when I start a triple like the one we have here. The rapid succession of the three engines that accelerate as they start up already suggests that, to the unequivocal beauty of this MaxiRib, today we can add a good deal of adrenaline.

I think about this while effortlessly pushing the electronic throttle forward and engaging the gear. The helm station is simply perfect, I can drive while sitting or standing, leaning on the lumbar support offered by the cockpit seat, and always have excellent visibility and almost total shelter from the wind.

Accelerating to around 14 knots our Envy 1200 pulls away from the wake, gets up on plane and, free of the water, reaches 17/18 knots without any further increase in power, this hull glides really well. But it is by adding just 1,000 revs to the formula that we discover the true gift of this maxi, which “stretches”, lowers the bow

even further and gives us a superlative ride, between 25 and 35 knots, where comfort and speed are perfectly matched. Further confirmation of how favourable this range is for the Envy 1200 is also provided by the flow meter which, despite a cruising speed of around 30 knots, shows consumption of just 160 litres per hour overall.

But it’s time to go for it, so I ask the crew to

hold on and I push the throttles forward. In a split second the three Mercury 450R deliver all their 1,350 horsepower to the sea and I am literally crushed to the seat. The sound of the engines is amazing, it gives me goosebumps while the GPS breaks the 50 knot barrier in a few seconds, but it doesn’t stop, it goes on and passes 55 knots until it “stops the clock” at 55.8 knots.

Not bad at all for a luxurious cabin Maxi-Rib like this, especially if we think that, even at top speed, the Scanner goes as if it were on rails and the protection offered by the large windscreen is still total.

I slow down, get up to around 30 knots and turn tight. The G-force increases as the Scanner Envy 1200 HT tilts and the

excitement builds up again, then I quickly counter-turn to enter our own waves but, without making a dent, the Maxi-Rib crosses them with ease, it’s hard to put it in trouble.

I turn around and notice that the crew is chatting, a sure sign that the passengers are relaxed. The new Envy 1200 HT Scanner is really a great boat.

The side walkways run the length of the boat right up to the edge of the cockpit where, thanks to two steps, they rise up to crown the outer perimeter, marking out the boundaries of the bow sundeck and at the same time giving precious centimetres to the areas below.

At the stern, in a central position, there is a large sundeck which, thanks to a removable backrest, also acts as an aft sofa for the pretty dinette, allowing four people to dine al fresco.

Further forward we find the large central unit which, on the one hand, houses a fully-equipped galley unit and, on the other, the pilot’s sofa in front of the large, sheltered instrument panel.

Above all this is the Hard Top, the feature that most characterizes this Maxi-Rib and which, in addition to shading this complex, protects it from the weather and, by exploiting the windscreen extension, provides the bow sundeck.

On the left we find the descent to the lower deck which, as already mentioned, is very large due to the bow deck. Inside we find a hallway with a sofa to port and a huge private head to starboard, which even has a separate shower cubicle.

Towards the bow, a king-size bed elegantly completes the interior of the Scanner Envy 1200 HT which, despite its twelve meters, offers a level of comfort usually found on larger yachts.

But what struck us most, apart from the performance and generous dimensions, is the quality of the workmanship which, everywhere, is above average.

This new Scanner Envy 1200 HT Outboard has really won us over, it is very well built, it is fun and encapsulates all the experience acquired by this boatyard over the years even though, I am willing to bet, it will be purchased above all for its unquestionable beauty.

THE ALL-SEASON COMMUTER

It is impossible not to associate the Nimbus brand with the concept of quality and the famous seaworthy qualities of the boats that this Swedish boatyard has been manufacturing since 1968.

The current fleet includes twelve models, flybridge coupes and walkarounds, ranging from eight to thirteen metres in length. As you’ve no doubt already guessed from the title, we were impressed by their latest big novelty, the Nimbus C11, a truly revolutionary commuter.

But what is a commuter really? What makes it so special that it deserves such an interesting name?

A commuter is a boat designed for all sea lovers, those who like to enjoy their boat for a long time, both in summer and winter. The owner of a commuter is a “serial weekender”, who takes full advantage of his investment even when the ports are empty, thanks to a yacht that can comfortably accommodate a family of four in all weather conditions.

The commuter also has the great advantage of being designed to be versatile, so it lends itself perfectly to summer sunbathing, as well as to fishing trips or medium or longrange cruises which, thanks to its hull qualities, are within reach both in terms of fuel economy, cruising speed and adrenaline because, as you will see, on board the Nimbus C11 you will also have a lot of fun.

NIMBUS C11 114 YACHT DIGEST 115 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

NIMBUS C11 PERFORMANCE

The model we’re testing is fitted with twin Volvo D4 DPI 320s, perhaps the best engine option for this boat, which is however also offered with a more powerful D6 440HP engine. This is an option that I personally don’t consider indispensable, given that, as you’ll read, the boat already gets close to 40 knots and consumes very little fuel.

The joystick is very easy to use and even in a crosswind like today, there’s no risk at all. We quickly leave the harbour and start sailing slowly.

The hull is double-stepped and, even going slowly, it shows its qualities. At 7 knots, the boat glides through the water, with no apparent resistance, at just 1,000 rpm.

I go round the boat to remove the fenders and I can’t help noticing how safe the movement on board is. We’re on a walk-around designed for much tougher seas than ours and here nothing is left to chance. There are handrails everywhere and even when you’re passing over waves there’s no risk of moving from stern to bow.

I go back inside through one of the two side doors (which are really handy when mooring) and get back to the controls. It’s time to get it on. I push the throttles and the boat immediately gets up on plane; at 13 knots, the bow is low on the water.

"

A slight pressure on the controls and, at just 2,500 rpm, we’re already well over 20 knots; the boat runs serenely on the water, simply not caring about the rough sea.

We’re in the waters of Cannes during the Yachting Festival and there are waves coming in from all sides. The traffic from the dozens of boats being tested creates a confused sea state that our Nimbus C11 happily ignores as she continues on her way.

A flawless seaworthiness that to me sounds like an invitation to go for it. I push the throttles all ahead and the commuter instantly accelerates, We pass 30 knots and reach almost 40 in total tranquillity, penetrating the waves without the boat suffering any impact, it’s as if the sea simply opened up as we passed.

I slow down and try a couple of tight turns, the boat tilts, I reverse and tighten up to the maximum, bringing the Nimbus C11 into a

NIMBUS C11 120 YACHT DIGEST 121 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

turn of no more than 20 metres in diameter. But she doesn’t do anything, she doesn’t make a plisset, not a flap, it’s like she was on the rails.

I go back in a straight line and get up to 30 knots. I close the side doors and windows and …. and the boat transforms and goes from being an aggressive coupe to a pure cruiser sailing in absolute silence. Amazing, just amazing…

In this new muffled and heated world I find the time to give a reading to the instruments. The new Volvos are excellent, I can sail at practically any speed and the consumption, in terms of litres per mile, remains practically the same, that is about 3 litres per nautical mile.

This is a very low overall consumption that I have never seen on any other boat.

HOW THE NIMBUS C11 IS MADE

Inside the walk-around that forms the perimeter of the boat, the various functions of this commuter come to life.

At the bow there is a two-people sofa with a suitably sized sundeck behind it that leans against the deckhouse, from which the large pilot house develops, the beating heart of the simply ingenious Nimbus C11 deck plan.

It is in fact the pilot house that almost single-handedly succeeds in realising

NIMBUS C11 128 YACHT DIGEST 129 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

the concept of a commuter. This is a space that has three sliding doors that, depending on the transformations you choose, all of which can be done in a matter of minutes, allow this yacht to go from the summer version to the autumn version or, if you wish, to the winter version where the interior is completely enclosed and can seat 9 guests.

Outside, at the stern, there is another sofa oriented in running order, which still leaves space for a structure to store fenders, and even further back, the large beach area, which is enormous and perfectly accommodates the needs of a large group of guests.

" Three sliding doors allow this yacht to go from the summer version to the autumn version "

In the summer version, the pilot house has an interior dinette with a U-shaped sofa, an opening table, a rear exit and two side exits.

Towards the bow, the two helm seats take advantage of a large panel able to house not only the helm, throttles and all the switches, but also displays of generous dimensions.

On the left we find the descent to the lower deck, where the sleeping area is located.

Inside this area there is a large bow cabin, a complete linear galley, a head with a separate shower and an additional double cabin with a sofa and standing room.

CONCLUSIONS

The Nimbus C11 has really impressed us. Beautiful, fast and comfortable, this boat amazes for its innovative solutions and for the quality of its construction, decidedly above average. It is a boat that can be enjoyed all year round, combining proverbial hull qualities with a fuel economy that is unique in its kind.

The perfect boat for those who really love the sea.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE SPECIES

f you thought you’d seen it all in terms of ten-metre open sports yachts, you’d be very wrong. The new FIM 340 Regina is a boat that is decidedly different from all the others, capable of perfectly combining sporty design with above-average liveability. A combination that, while certainly what everyone would like, is extremely difficult to synthesize.

But FIM – Fabbrica Italiana Motoscafi – has plenty of experience to offer. Corrado Piccinelli and Manuela Barcella have over 25 years’ experience building prestigious yachts for internationally renowned yards. The team is completed by renowned designer Paolo Ferragni and Vannis Marchi, cofounder of Liu Jo, resulting in an irresistible mix of passion and expertise. We couldn’t help but taste this flavour for ourselves, so we drove to Chioggia to get on board this wonderful boat.

I

FIM 340 REGINA SEA TRIAL

Today Chioggia offers us an almost summery day, the ideal climate for testing an open sport yacht like this. Gimmy Valente, founder of Adriatic Wave and important distributor of FIM and other prestigious brands, is waiting for us to accompany us on the test. I’ve known Gimmy for a long time and I know we’re going to have fun today, he certainly doesn’t hold back when it comes to pushing hard.

We cast off our moorings and head out of the Mosella dock, manoeuvring this boat is really easy. Outside the harbour we sail slowly, the limit in the lagoon is around ten knots and the two 300 hp Yamahas barely mumble at this speed but, despite this low pace, the hull goes straight, an undeniable sign of a pronounced V and a very correct deadrise angle.

Once past the breakwaters and into the open sea, I push the throttles forward to get into glide and, to my great and positive surprise, I realize that the FIM 340 Regina is already coming out of the water at around 10

knots. Accelerating slightly, we reach 14/15 knots and here the boat lowers its bow, stretches out completely and begins to glide through the water with a virtually perfect trim.

But it’s time to see what this hull is made of, so I put the throttles on and, as the thrust of the two outboards glues me to the seat, I see the log rapidly increase in speed. The FIM 340 Regina has an intoxicating acceleration and in the blink of an eye we are already over 45 knots. We trim the outboards by raising them and set the top speed at 47.2 knots. What is amazing is the longitudinal position of this hull, the boat cruises flat on the water with the bow wheel almost touching the surface of the sea, an almost perfect ride!

At top speed I try to make a wide turn, which I was expecting, but the FIM 340 Regina does so without hesitation. The stability at high speed is excellent. I slow down to about 30 knots, tell the crew to hold on and then turn violently to the left. The boat heels, the adrenaline kicks in but the hull holds its circular course without any problems and without losing speed. I take the outboards to their maximum turning radius, making a circle with a very small diameter, 20/25 metres at the most. We’re still sailing at around

FIM 340 REGINA 144 YACHT DIGEST 145 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

30 knots and as we’re riding a perfect circle I take both hands off the rudder but, again, this sporty open yacht doesn’t care and stays on a circular course as if it were on rails.

I quickly counter-turn, I catch our waves on the starboard side but the hull goes through them as if they were made of butter, what a hull guys …

I bring the boat on a straight course, slow down and give the controls to Gimmy asking him to continue cruising at 30 knots. I go down below deck and once again I’m amazed by the total absence of creaks and squeaks, the FIM 340 Regina is really flawlessly built.

THE NEW FIM

340 REGINA IN DETAIL

The FIM 340 Regina FIM 340 Regina powerfully enters a very crowded market, introducing a model that stands out from the crowd with its high level of finish.

This is immediately apparent as soon as you get on board.

We are greeted by a teak of remarkable quality which, in the joints and fittings, immediately reveals that expert hands have worked here.

But it is in the details and materials used that the FIM 340 Regina reveals

FIM 340 REGINA 150 YACHT DIGEST 151 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

its true nature, everywhere there is a clear feeling of luxury that, in a tenmetre craft, we’ve honestly never seen before.

The cushions, with closed-cell padding, are upholstered in fine fabrics that satisfy the senses even to the touch. The T-Top, here in its SPORT version, is a small masterpiece of design and sturdiness.

Painted perfectly in matt black, it is anchored to the stern bulwarks and, by means of generously sized stainless steel tubulars, is connected to the forward dashboard, creating a onepiece, vibration-free structure.

The overall design of this solution also gives the whole boat a gritty look which, in this configuration, certainly does not go unnoticed.

The helm cockpit, which is heavily shaded by the T-Top, is centrally located and leaves space to both port and starboard for onboard circulation. Reaching the large sundeck in the bow is easy, whether the boat is stationary or underway.

" The T-Top, here in its SPORT version, is a small masterpiece of design and sturdiness "

At the stern there is a multifunctional area which, thanks to a solution as ingenious as it is useful, instantly goes from being a large dinette with a U-shaped sofa and central table to being transformed into a huge additional sundeck. Bounding the edge of this lounge area at the bow is a bar unit containing a sink, hob, fridge and plenty of storage space – in short, everything you need to enjoy a day at sea without hassle.

But it is when you get down into the bowels of the FIM 340 Regina that, after opening your mouth wide in amazement, you realize the great quality of this boat. We are greeted by a space so large that it seems almost impossible, where leather, fabrics, precious essences and a superlative lighting system highlight the work masterfully carried out by the craftsmen of this shipyard.

The dinette below deck is obviously convertible and features a huge oval sofa in the centre of which is a folddown hydraulic piston table. The head is also oversized and has a separate shower, a feature that is decidedly uncommon on boats of this size.

In the stern, a second double cabin of delightful design houses two single beds which, cleverly, benefit from side storage compartments and are separated by a central piece of furniture with a generously sized top and power socket.

SEXY, OPEN AND EXTRA-LARGE

Hard not to be immediately fascinated by the beauty of the new Sessa C3X .

With this boat, Sessa Marine has also created a very interesting project, which makes its modularity a great strength. In fact, there are three models resulting from this study, which intelligently combines the Open, Hard Top and T-Top versions of a design base whose key values are roominess and beauty.

The top version of this new model is certainly the T-Top, and today we are going to sea trial it together, in a world preview.

THE NEW SESSA C3X

Climbing aboard the new Sessa C3X we can’ t help but notice that, despite the fact that the boat is homologated as a registration-free craft, its real dimensions are really exaggerated.

With an overall length of more than eleven metres and a width of around three and a half metres, the Sessa C3X offers the space of a much larger boat.

Access to the cockpit is via a step up from the large aft platform. On the left is a generously sized sundeck which, thanks to a fold-down backrest, also becomes the aft sofa of the U-shaped dinette with central table, which is

SESSA C3X 166 YACHT DIGEST 167 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

counterbalanced by a mobile bar that can hold everything you need for a day at sea.

Moving towards the bow, to the left, there is a huge chaise longue which, with its great comfort, will certainly be the most soughtafter place by the whole crew.

On the starboard side there is a very well arranged helm station, with excellent allround visibility and capable of containing all the necessary electronics.

This whole area is overlooked by a large sliding full-beam roof which, when open, effectively regulates the air flow when under way and, when closed, shades the open space outside.

Lastly, access to the bow is via two symmetrical side-decks which, on another positive note, are much wider than average

" With an overall length of more than eleven metres and a width of around three and a half metres, the Sessa C3X offers the space of a much larger boat "

and allow for a very safe passage to the huge sundeck that awaits us.

But it is going below deck that we are literally speechless. The space is enormous, it’s like being aboard a 40-footer.

On the starboard side, there’s a second L-shaped dinette with a central folding table that can also be used as another bed. Next is a galley with wall units which, by exploiting the forward bulkhead, extends over an area that is simply unthinkable for boats of this size, and which can easily accommodate the provisions needed for medium-range cruises.

On the left is the head which, equipped with a separate shower cubicle, is cleverly positioned amidships, thus also serving as a day toilet.

Completing the unusual interior of the new Sessa C3X are two cabins which, in terms of size, finish and equipment, can easily be identified as two masters. The forward cabin has a raised central bed and is served on both sides by wardrobes, shelves and plenty of walking space. The stern master, on the other hand, has a king-size bed positioned across the beam and even has a hallway with wardrobes, shelves and a sofa.

In short, a boat of truly unexpected dimensions, perfect to enjoy long and comfortable cruises, with the family or a couple of friends.

SESSA C3X SEA TRIAL

The engine room has two Volvo DPS 350hp gasoline sterndrives which, I’ll never get tired of saying, are the best option for this type of boat. Much lighter (and cheaper) than their diesel counterparts, they are ideal if you don’t intend to do 200/300 hours of cruising a year. Optional diesel or outboard versions are of course also available.

Sitting comfortably in the helm seat, I engage the gear and push the gas. The visibility all around is really good and it’s very easy to manoeuvre, even in tight spaces.

Once out of the harbour we speed up and the Sessa C3X gets up on plane quickly, already at 12 knots she comes out of the water, pulls away from the wake and spreads out naturally. This characteristic also makes it possible to find a series of “low cruising speeds” which will prove to be important for cruising in rough seas or, more simply, for travelling without haste and enjoying the views.

SESSA C3X 176 YACHT DIGEST 177 YACHT DIGEST SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

Noteworthy are the speeds between 20 and 30 knots, where consumption is fairly constant, always less than 4 litres per mile. This is a really good result, as the hull glides over the water with little friction.

But the Sessa C3X can offer much more, it’s an open yacht and, despite the richness and size of the interior, it must also be able to offer sporting sensations, so let’s stop hesitating and let’s put the throttles down.

The boat accelerates without any apparent effort up to 35/36 knots and then, with a little trimming of the engines, it accelerates again to almost 40 knots, which isn’t bad

" The boat accelerates without any apparent effort up to 35/36 knots and then, with a little trimming of the engines, it accelerates again to almost 40 knots "

for an open boat like this that we’re testing with a full load.

I reduce speed to around 20 knots and then turn sharply, the boat tilts and the adrenalin rises as the hull does its job keeping the Sessa C3X firmly in its trajectory. I counter-turn until I meet our own waves, which the boat crosses without impact.

Then I get back on a straight course at about 30 knots and enjoy the comfort.

This new Sessa C3X goes very well.

THE BATTERIES THAT WILL CHANGE BOATING ARE HERE

The debate is always raging about which is the best solution between lithium batteries and traditional lead batteries. On the one hand, the almost total discharge capacity (and therefore usability) of lithium batteries, and on the other, the peak performance and power offered by traditional AGMs, which, however, cannot drop below 80% of their voltage otherwise they are irreparably compromised.

It’s quite a dilemma to face, especially when it comes to marine use, where our beloved service batteries are subjected to intensive use and must (given their cost) last a long time and not leave us stranded.

Fortunately, the German company BOS AG has come up with an ingenious solution that maximizes the strengths of the two alternatives by making them work together – an innovation that we were so intrigued by that we wanted to try it out…

ABOUT THE BOS LE300 SMART BATTERY SYSTEM

The BOS LE300 Smart Battery System is an advanced energy storage system consisting of individual 12v lithium smart battery modules, each offering 28 Ah of capacity and 12.5 A of current.

The batteries are very compact in size and are designed for parallel assembly to achieve the desired capacity, which will be determined according to the needs of the individual boat.

These lithium batteries can be used either to increase the total capacity of existing lead-acid battery packs, or to study and optimize the operation of a

new battery pack, when replacing it or installing it for the first time.

But the real innovation of the BOS LE300s is that their intelligence is designed to prioritize discharging and recharging of their modules, which, by reading the voltage of the lead-acid batteries to which they are connected, effectively eliminate any deteriorating factors.

In fact, it is common knowledge that traditional batteries operate in a range between 12.8 and 10.8 V, although it is advisable not to take them to a voltage lower than 12.3 V in order not to compromise their life.

Well, the primary function of the BOS LE300 is to replace the discharge of lead-acid batteries, keeping them constantly at the highest possible voltage, using the ability of lithium batteries to deliver amps without decreasing their voltage.

In short, the BOS LE300 can discharge completely while the lead-acid batteries remain charged and healthy! Added to this is the fact that this technology is designed to be truly plug-and-play, i.e. the installation of the BOS LE300s does not require any additional charger: you only need to put them in parallel with your existing batteries, which clearly justifies the title of this article.

191 YACHT DIGEST BOS LE300 SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022

"

The real innovation of the BOS LE300s is that their intelligence is designed to prioritize discharging and recharging of their modules "

BOS LE300 SMART BATTERY SYSTEM: INSTALLATION

The annual check of our Daydreamer‘s batteries is an important task. Our labboat sails a lot and, above all, spends an average of 30/40 nights at anchor per season. Our configuration has six 110 Ah lead-acid batteries, one for the engine and five dedicated to the utilities which, as well as supporting all the on-board equipment, must also drive the hydraulic system that powers our large winches, the mainsail furler and the furler.

All this, despite the 150 watts of solar panels we have and due to the large number of nights spent at anchor, rapidly deteriorates the traditional batteries we have. In fact, after only four years of use, we find that one of the batteries is compromised and two others are below the minimum voltage level, which means they are also on their way to expiring. We have to change them all.

So we decide to trust the product we are going to test and to study a new configuration that foresees the restoration of the engine battery with a specific AGM for starting of 100Ah and, instead of the 5 service batteries, we will install only 4 AGM of 110 Ah.

194 YACHT DIGEST 195 BOS LE300 SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

In place of the fifth battery, we will instead install 4 BOS LE300 modules which, as well as optimizing the operation of our energy reserve, will provide us with a total of 102.4 Ah and will be able to deliver 50 A of current, the AGMs will therefore only be “stressed” once this reserve has been used up.

Installation is very easy, the modules are lightweight and space-saving, nothing compared to the huge effort just put into disembarking and embarking traditional batteries.

It’s really easy to fit them in, and to connect them up we simply put them in parallel with our 4 AGMs.

In our case we have chosen to pair the modules two by two so that they can be easily distributed in the space available but, if you wish, it is also possible to compose them in a single one-piece block.

The actual installation time, excluding the AGMs of course, is about ten minutes with a very low degree of difficulty. In short, anybody can do it: simply insert the modules into the available space, loosen the nuts on the AGM battery poles, insert the BOS LE300 cable lugs into the corresponding bolts and tighten again. A piece of cake.

196 YACHT DIGEST 197 YACHT DIGEST BOS LE300 SEA TRIALS | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

AFTERINSTALLATION TEST

Now it’s time to power up our system. We plug in the dock socket, switch on our trusty Quick SBC 700 NRG+ 60 A charger, charge everything and postpone the first analysis until the next day.

The following morning we disconnect the quayside cable and wait a couple of hours, after which we climb aboard to measure the voltages.

The situation is clear: the engine battery, which is completely isolated, shows a voltage of 12.8 Volts; the utilities-dedicated batteries, connected to the four modules of the BOS LE300 Smart Battery System, measure 13.5V! In practice, it is as if they were charging, in maintenance mode.

We wait a few days and repeat the measurement: no change.

We therefore check the state of the BOS LE300s which, being equipped with autonomous LEDs, show a green light indicating their full charge.

Now we make some empirical tests. First of all, we put the engine battery

in parallel by means of the common battery charger and, instantaneously, the BOS LE300s bring it too from 12.8 to 13.4 V.

We disconnect the engine charger again and, wanting to find the limits, we switch on everything: fridge, bilge pumps, all the on-board lighting (incandescent), the navigation lights and the deck light.

The voltage obviously drops during use, but never below 13.1 V, which is great!

We repeat the experiment over and over again, but the result is unchanged. This is irrefutable proof that only the lithium batteries are working, supplying power to the boat without affecting the capacity of the utilities-dedicated AGMs.

Now all we have to do is connect the solar panels to the system and we will have achieved a small masterpiece of energy self-sustainability.

The BOS LE300s will recharge themselves using the surplus voltage provided by the solar panels and, in turn, will keep the service AGMs charged, so they will never have an energy “deficit”.

This system also protects the boat from the risk of galvanic currents when the battery charger and shore power are connected..

NOW WHAT?

So now we leave our BOS-LE300Smart-Battery-System-installationcompletedDaydreamer disconnected from the ground and start thinking about the endurance tests that will be carried out over the next few months.

We want to see how the system performs over time, both during the weeks we spend at anchor and during our cruises.

The BOS LE300s will therefore be put to the test by the use of the hydraulic system during sailing, stressed by the nights spent at anchor with the utilities on and put to the test by the numerous daily anchorages and unanchorages, where the 1,400 watts of our winch must manage our 80 meters of chain and the 27 KG Ultra, a heavy anchor line, but indispensable for sleeping peacefully when the seabed is over 15/20 meters deep.

We will be putting the BOS LE300 Smart Battery System to a really important test and, at the end of the season, as always, we will bring you the results.

And if in the meantime you feel like coming to see first hand what we have just told you about, as always the Daydreamer is not only available but proud to welcome our readers.

MIA 63 T-TOP ALL AROUND

THE EVOLUTION OF FRANCHINI YACHTS’ MASTERPIECE

Franchini Yachts has announced that it will start production of the Mia 63 T-Top all around, an evolution of the exciting Mia 63 that has conquered the market so much that the builder has decided to further refine its masterpiece. «Mia 63 T-Top all around, which will be ready next September, was born as a confirmation of the idea of a “liveable open”», explains Massimo Franchini, «capable of combining an en-plein-air deck with the interiors of a real motoryacht».

Much appreciated by the public and clients, Mia 63 has a highly modular interior layout, offering up to three cabins in addition to the crew cabin with head and independent entrance from the deck, which can be furnished in different configurations, for a total area of 55 square metres below deck.

The interiors and furnishings can be adapted to a wide range of needs

and the design has been studied to encourage countless customizations, following the semi-custom concept normally used for superyachts. The construction technique is also very interesting: nanotechnology is used in the formulation of the resins through a patented process that makes it possible to obtain a sturdier and lighter structure, while reducing vibrations and sound propagation.

For all these reasons, Mia 63 has won over yachting enthusiasts, so much so that Franchini Yachts has decided to postpone development of the range in the hard-top and sport-fly versions to give this first line all the upgrades needed to make the boat even more functional and enjoyable: this is how Mia 63 T-Top all around was born, offering a wrap-around windscreen that protects from wind and sea even when cruising on the high seas in all conditions, giving the same protection and safety as an enclosed boat but without taking away from the feeling of freedom typical of Mediterranean open crafts; the deck is even more airy and clean, emphasizing the bowto-stern passageways to reach every point on the boat without obstacles; the bow cockpit is larger and more sheltered, the hard top is extended aft and the galley and helm station areas are even more functional and

ergonomic. «At the same time», Mr. Franchini points out, «the storage spaces and technical compartments below deck have been further increased to allow families or groups of friends to spend long periods of time on board at sea, in port or at anchor, while increasing range and performance thanks to the new Volvo IPS 1350 engines, which can deliver up to 40 knots in total safety and comfort».

The boat, which was born almost as a “provocation” for Cantiere Navale Franchini, famous worldwide for its classic, low-profile style, is becoming an all-around yacht that will mark the future of the historic Italian shipyard.

NEO 515

FIVEONEFIVE

THE NEW SUPER-VERSATILE FULL CARBON YACHT FROM CECCARELLI YACHT DESIGN

A hull that shows its muscles with elegance, with incredible versatility depending on the owner’s choices and numerous options, and above all with a series of design innovations that stand out for their intelligence and engineering artistry. Neo 515 Fiveonefive is the new sailboat designed by Ceccarelli Yacht Design, a full-carbon yacht already under construction that expands the NEO YACHTS yard’s range by flanking the previous 350 and 430 Roma models and the new 570, which is also close to launching.

Neo 515 Fiveonefive remains faithful to the original Neo Yachts concept thanks to its full carbon fibre epoxy construction, high righting moment, high keel weight, generous sail plan and very light displacement. But above all, thanks to the wide range of customization options available, Neo 515 Fiveonefive can become a very fast cruiser that offers high performance at sea, even when upwind and in white-sail mode; a cruiser-racer that is very easy to convert from one mode to the other simply by adding a few sails and changing the cushions for cheaper ones; or even a

full racer without losing the space and tools necessary for a crew to live on board while maintaining comfort for basic needs (eating, sleeping, going to the bathroom), but at the same time optimizing performance.

With its large 5-metre transom, the Neo 515 Fiveonefive offers a good-sized garage tender in both the double- and single-rudder versions. The garage is enclosed by a wide

platform that allows easy dives into the sea, while the keel, available in three options (fixed 3.5 or 3.6 metres, hydraulic lifting 3.6 to 2.1 metres, electric telescopic 3.5 to 2.1 metres) is made up of a weldox structure (a special grade of stainless steel that allows for large elastic deformations), carbon fibre shells to give a perfect hydrodynamic profile and a bulb of no less than 4000 kg that brings the keel to 50% of the yacht’s total

displacement. These factors, combined with the significant draft, are the secret of the Neo 515 Fiveonefive’s great acceleration and speed capacity, as well as its extremely low heel.

But the design innovations of this wonderful sailboat do not end there. Noteworthy are the inverted bow that allows for a longer waterline and less weight at the front; the

NEO 515 214 YACHT DIGEST 215 YACHT DIGEST PREMIERE | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

important bow chamfer that saves 200 kg of weight in the front structure of the boat and ensures better wind flow when sailing upwind by gently sliding it into the sides of the aft deck; the integrated deck cabin that disappears into the bowsprit and offers a high interior headroom; and the low, smooth freeboard and long waterline, which generate a lower centre of gravity, a lower pitching for better comfort on the waves.

On the Neo 515 Fiveonefive, explains CEO Paolo Semeraro, “every single line, every single curve exists for a precise technical requirement, in order to create minimal impact and the greatest possible efficiency using only two elements: wind and water. In nature, everything that is efficient

is also simple and extraordinarily beautiful. This is why the Neo 515 Fiveonefive captivates at first glance”.

“Ever since I designed my first sailboat in 2014,” Mr. Semeraro continues, “it has been very difficult to look at other hulls without thinking about what they really are, which are boats that are too classic, too heavy and too boring to handle. Sometimes it happens that you see boats that look like the Neo, but when you examine them in detail, you discover that they only have a couple of peculiarities similar to those of our range. Nowadays I only enjoy sailing if I’m on board a Neo Yachts: the stability, acceleration and speed remind me of the good times in the Olympics… and I’m happy”.

NEW MAGAZZÙ TARGA RANGE UNVEILED

MAXI RIBS FROM 45 TO 55 FEET

A year and a half after the launch of the first Targa 45, Magazzù announces a new range based on a thorough restyling of its Maxi-Rib, offering an even more elegant, sporty and versatile look. The Palermo-based boatyard continues to look overseas with an automotive-inspired yacht, distinguished by a large U-shaped outdoor lounge, well sheltered from the steering console, designed above all for more convivial uses, but without neglecting performance, the main strength of this Maxi-Rib.

“The restyling mainly concerned the bow and deckhouse, in which all the openings are now integrated, to create an even more comfortable and functional craft,” explains designer

MAGAZZÙ TARGA RANGE 218 YACHT DIGEST 219 YACHT DIGEST PREMIERE | JULY 2022 JULY 2022

Claudio Magazzù. “The main features that have already made the Targa 45 so popular are still the same: this is in fact just an aesthetic restyling and linked to improving the usability of the boat. We have placed the access door to the cabin in correspondence with the driver’s seat, so as to ensure greater comfort when mooring and docking.“

The interior remains the same as the previous version, characterized by abundant living space and refined furnishings, including a cozy dinette with a large cooktop, a convertible corner sofa on the starboard side and a cabin equipped with a king-size bed and particularly bright thanks to the two overhead hatches.

The large windows in the console offer a panoramic view of the sea, another great added value of the Targa 45, as does the comfortable lounge located on the aft side, ideal for lunches and dinners. “It is, in short, a Maxi-Rib designed for a typically American yachting concept,” continues Mr. Magazzù, “and this is precisely why we created an enclosed and sheltered area that would allow the boat to be used in a seasonally adjusted manner. At the same time, however, the large aft window that

can be fully opened, as well as the hard-top canopy, make this area fully enjoyable even for the more summery and typical Mediterranean use, i.e. for sunbathing and swimming excursions“.

If we add to this the huge sundeck located on the foredeck, it is easy to imagine how the versatile Targa 45 will win many customers in Europe as well as in the US and Australian markets.

The new Targa 45 is already under construction and the first model has already been sold in Australia. The boat is available with two 600HP outboard engines or three 400HP engines, which ensure the extraordinary performance we have already described in our sea trial.

What’s more, Magazzù is developing the entire range, which will also include the Targa 50 and Targa 55 models, currently in the design phase. Of the latter, as an absolute and exclusive preview, we unveil today this amazing rendering which, as you will see, enhances the shapes and functions of the Targa series with a rigid tubular and walk-around deck.

A great boat, luxurious and sporty, which does not forget that it is a Magazzù: suffice to look at the elegance of these lines to realize that.

PRINCE 43 CC

An ultra-sporty Maxi-Rib with a look that is as magnificent as it is aggressive, Prince 43 CC is the brandnew addition from Nuova Jolly Marine, offered with a high-powered outboard propulsion. With its two Mercury Verado 600 V12s installed on the bracket, to date the most powerful in the world, Prince 43 CC is perhaps one of the best performing Ribs currently on the market, as well as offering a wide range of comforts (starting with the cabin, equipped with a separate head, porthole and bow entrance) and a host of interesting innovations (such as the gas piston hatch that lifts up, opening the central console like a “chest” at the bow and transforming into a seafront seat when closed, or the compact superstructures and the absence of decks to provide a large, obstacle-free passage area).

The Prince 43 CC surprises for its rationality and adherence to the sporty concept: in designing it, in fact, Nuova Jolly Marine has made some positively unusual choices on

elements such as the forward cabin, on which the greatest effort in terms of design has been concentrated, or the generous space in the foredeck and on the foredeck. The aesthetic aspect is also interesting in the helm station, designed without undermining the boat’s grit: thus conceived, in fact, the central console has a sober volume that is well-proportioned with the rest of the boat line.

PRINCE 43 CC : BOW CABIN

The forward cabin, which cannot be seen but is there, is the most convincing element. Accessed through

PREMIERE | NUOVA JOLLY PRINCE 43 222 YACHT DIGEST 223 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022

the gull-wing opening front hatch, we discover two convertible side berths and a separate toilet with shower. It is mainly thanks to this that, stepping aboard the Prince 43 CC, the first impression is one of space on deck, but not emptiness, thanks to the three fore lockers, the groove for the 50-metre chain and the two aft benches (with internal pump housing) to starboard and port.

In general, the design of the cabin, as well as the entire boat, is definitely inspired by luxury automotive, and already gives a foretaste of cruising speed, but without neglecting comfort so that you can sleep at least one night at anchor.

EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE

WITH VERADO 600 OUTBOARDS

Very few shipyards in Europe have been given the opportunity to fit their boats with the new Mercury Verado engines. Spectacular to look at and with unprecedented performance and range, these are the most powerful outboard engines in the world, and the Prince 43 CC really is the perfect “coach” in our opinion.

The acceleration that these two revolutionary engines provide to the boat is literally scorching, and the speed that can be reached with the boat fully loaded is close to 55 knots at 6500 rpm: a powerful performance that Nuova Jolly has ensured with adequate safety, allowing the transmission to be controlled with the utmost precision and perfectly tuning the engine block with the hull to keep it always stationary and aligned even during the most extreme turns.

Of course, in the face of such performance, the grip points for passengers who prefer to stand while cruising characterize the whole boat, without undermining its perfect design. With its tubulars and jelcoat

PREMIERE | NUOVA JOLLY PRINCE 43 224 YACHT DIGEST 225 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022

painted full-black, teak on the deck and lots of carbon on the helm station, the Prince 43 CC dominates the scene. After all, Nuova Jolly Marine knows how to do things on a large scale and has not let this model down, either, putting more than half a century of company history into it, the same history with which the yard has contributed to the evolution of the “Rib”, transforming it as we know it today with meticulous craftsmanship, attention to detail and rigorous sea testing.

Asking Teo Aiello of Nuova Jolly Marine to describe the performance of the Verado 600 V12s, he answers without hesitation: “Great performance and low consumption, plus the structural comfort provided by the fact that this type of engine does not move. So we were able to optimize the space on the stern platform of the Prince 43 CC by fixing the engines on an aluminium bracket”.

ROOM FOR EVERYONE

A hydraulic gangway rises up from the Prince 43 CC’s aft platform and rests against the dock, delighting all those who don’t like jumping up and down from the dock. The aft, almost fullbeam sofa has a reclining backrest to turn into a sundeck, plus it lifts up to access the plant room.

In terms of space, in short, there is everything you need on a boat that is obviously not a yacht, but which has much lower maintenance and mooring costs in port. For example, the two tables, at the bow and stern, are electrically powered and go to the floor to create the ambience you need according to the people on board. Here, too, the concept of ‘free space’ returns, or convertible, for example into a sundeck in the case of the table on the foredeck.

PRINCE 43 CC: GRIT AND SPORTINESS

If we then look at the canopy, boating craftsmanship marries experienced coachbuilding: “The canopy is bodypainted because jelcoat tends to fade or dull,” explains Teo Aiello, who is anything but superficial when it comes to choosing colours and paint durability: “Since it is black, we had to repaint it, and we did it ‘body-painted’

with two coats of primer and two coats of clear coat, otherwise the boat would be completely dull after two years“.

What’s more: Prince 43 CC helm stationtwo carbon periscope stands extend from the canopy, to which the awning is attached, creating a very interesting area of shade at the stern The broadside is made of fibreglass and continues to the bow in the same mould. At the stern, the padded gunwales rise up to reveal two lockers to the left and right of the boat, so you can cruise comfortably face to face, each with their own large portion of the panorama.

The centre console is decidedly prestigious, with lots of carbon between the instruments, for which there is plenty of space, useful for installing the electronic equipment chosen by the owner. Protection is guaranteed not only by the canopy but also by the windscreen framed in a truly sporty stainless steel frame. The three seats are independent with a raised platform to improve the view: they are foldable, wide, comfortable and non-slip, and are also fitted with armrests and nicely decorated by their modern mirrored stainless steel frame. Behind the seats here’s what you need for a nice shrimp cocktail: electric (or gas) cooker, 100-litre refrigerator and two teak cabinets as standard.

Once again designed by the superlative pencil of naval architect Matteo Polli in collaboration with the Nauta Design studio, Grand Soleil’s new sailing yacht is a 40-footer with a hull that at first glance convinces by promising excellent performance without sacrificing volume: comfort and space on board are in fact generous and make this boat both luxurious, competitive and easy to handle.

The GS 40, available in the Performance or Race version, boasts a layout that maximizes the volumes

of every area, high quality finishes and spaces below deck that have been optimized for top roominess in both the living and dining areas. In short, the new GS 40 has everything it takes to replicate the success of the GS 44, winner of the last ORC world championship, also designed by Mr. Polli, while maintaining the family feeling of the Grand Soleil range between style, elegance, ergonomics and safety. The deck plan of the Performance version is particularly interesting, with four winches as standard, two in the deckhouse and two next to the helms. The self-tacking jib, which is also fitted as standard, has a hanging rail, while the German mainsail sheet point is fixed in the cockpit. Lastly, it is worth noting the position of the mast which, just like on the GS 44, is set back to maximize the “J” and therefore the base of the headsails. In the Race version, the mast is in carbon fibre and the sail plan has larger proportions than the standard version.

“The hull lines of the GS 40 are an evolution of the concept studied for the GS 44, with maximum attention paid to the balance of volumes,” explains architect Polli. “The design brief for the new Grand Soleil 40 is very similar to that of the GS 44, but with the bar set even higher given the smaller size. The 40-foot overall length, one of the most common on the market, presents an even greater challenge in finding the ideal compromise between interior

volume and sporty features. Thanks also to the experience gained on the 44 and to the design team that is now well established, it has been possible to find the perfect combination of performance and comfort. The hull lines are an evolution of the concepts studied for the GS 44, giving maximum attention to the balance of volumes as heel increases. The bow lines remain very slender to maintain good performance in light winds and ensure a smooth passage over the wave.

As on the GS 44, a lot of emphasis has been placed on the decidedly backward positioning of the mast, enabling Nauta Design to develop an innovative layout that benefits both performance and comfort. The choice was also made to maintain a very forward single rudder blade centerboard, which I think is ideal for both cruising and racing”.

RIO YACHTS ENTERS THE MAXI RIB MARKET WITH INAGUA AND EXUMA

After 61 years of history and the success of the DAYTONA range, RIO YACHTS enters the Maxi Rib market with two new lines: INAGUA and EXUMA. The idea stems from the need to satisfy the most experienced owners looking for a craft that is both a MAXI RIB and a yacht. As always, in order to meet RIO’s quality standards, production will be 100% Made in Italy and, to this end, a new factory has been set up on Lake Iseo.

Once again, the shipyard has relied on the expert hand of designer Marino Alfani who has had to, in order to stand out in a segment already full of offerings, create boats with their own personality, very different from those already available on the market.

RIO YACHT INAGUA EXUMA 234 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 235 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 PREMIERE |

RIO YACHTS INAGUA S will be the first of the new range to be produced and the launch is already scheduled for summer 2022, in time for the premiere at the Cannes and Genoa boat shows.

It is the entry level of the range, 10.90 metres long overall. The lines, which echo those of the DAYTONA range, are clean-cut and taut, while the deck spaces are large and comfortable. Three elements characterize this maxi-rib: the tubulars, the steering console and the T-Top.

A lot of time was spent on the tubulars during the research phase; the aim was to avoid the stern cone having the usual semi-spherical end and, therefore, a clean-cut end was created.

Apparently an end INAGUA Sin itself, this design detail actually represents one of the points most subject to the forces of a tubular. This detail is further characterized by the turquoise colour, which has always identified the yard and creates a continuous line along the entire RIB tubular.

but without sacrificing aesthetics. The shape, in fact, is reminiscent of a diamond, with sharp, refined and elegant facets.

The steering console had to meet ergonomic requirements to meet high safety standards,

The T-Top, with its light aesthetics, is actually very solid and sturdy. Its supports enter the pilot’s bench and anchor to the deck, which, delightfully, with this system appears as if it were suspended above the deck, giving the deck further lightness and cleanliness.

MUSSINI LOOKS TO THE FUTURE AND LAUNCHES THE NEW ELECTRIC CORVETTA

Historic Ligurian boatyard Giorgio Mussini takes its first step towards the ecological transition and announces the launch of the electric Corvetta, its first completely green boat. Construction of the new hull of one of Portofino’s most iconic boats, equipped with an innovative electric engine, will be completed by the summer. This is a real revolution for the Mussini shipyard, which has always been synonymous with Italian craftsmanship and know-how thanks to its long experience in building all-wood boats: if this is already the ecological material par excellence that distinguished Giorgio Mussini’s marvellous creations, now the power supply will also be clean energy.

The official presentation of the new electric Corvetta, announces Marketing Manager Emanuela Bertullo, “will take place in July in the Portofino marina, where our yard is based and where an electric recharging station, supplied by Aqua, will be installed for the occasion. The electric Corvetta will also be premiered at the next Cannes Yachting Festival”.

Elegant and sophisticated, the Corvetta 24 has always been associated with the summer dolce vita of Portofino. It is a luxurious and enjoyable 8-metre day cruiser that combines comfort, speed and easy handling with seaworthiness. In particular, the mahogany and teak finishes give the unmistakable handcrafted feel that only wood can provide. This is precisely why the Mussini yard’s project is an absolute first in the boating sector: so far, in fact, projects for electric or hydrogen-

240 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 241 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022

powered boats have only focused on superyachts and large vessels, while the electric Corvetta will be the first recreational boat with a clean engine designed for families, day trips and slow tourism on the seas and lakes. The idea was born two years ago at Mussini, a company that has always made experimentation its watchword, not only with the work of founder Giorgio but also that of his son Gaetano, now head of the company, and his granddaughter Emanuela Bertullo.

The Mussini shipyard turned to E4Boat, a network of highly innovative companies in the fields of advanced robotics (Terzago Robotics), electrified and hybrid propulsion (4E Consulting) and shipbuilding (Selene Shipyards), to supply the engine for the electric Corvetta. “We’ve had the idea for some time,” says Mr. Bertullo, “but we needed a partner for the

electric engine and it wasn’t easy to find the right solution. The engine is fundamental for a boat like the ones we build, because performance is important and the transition from an endothermic engine to an electric one is not trivial. Two years ago, before the pandemic, we had already started looking for trusted suppliers and began studying the possibility of am electrically-powered boat. Then the arrival of Covid-19 stopped everything until, last summer, Marco Geraci, chairman of Selene Shipyards, happened to come aboard one of our charter boats; and so, while we were talking about the Cinque Terre marine protected area and Portofino, our idea for an electric boat came up and we started the project”.

There were other potential partners on Mussini’s agenda, but in the end the choice fell on Selene and E4Boat for reasons that go beyond the technical and technological issues: “We had found someone with the same enthusiasm as us and the desire to do something together. We are sea people, who love and respect the sea, and with them we found the best solution that combines historical tradition and technological innovation to create a boat that respects the environment,” concludes Emanuela.

The one supplied by E4Boat for the Corvetta is a permanent magnet electric motor with a minimum power of 30 kW, static power converter

and battery modules totalling 65 kWh (autonomy 4 hours at 16 kW absorption). The total weight is 550 kg and it will be housed in the boat’s existing compartments, one on each side of the hull and one in the compartment housing the current endothermic engine. “Zero environmental impact and silence ensure boaters a renewed experience of the sea: one in which the sound of the waves, the breeze and sea animals, what surrounds them, together with a gentle lapping sound on the hull, is music,” comments Luca Terzago, CEO of Selene Shipyards and Terzago Robotics. ” What’s more, the reliability of an electric motor, compared to an endothermic one, is much higher. This translates into very low maintenance requirements while ensuring a drastic reduction in the risk of breakdowns. Last but not least, energy supply costs are almost negligible”.

AMPERAUTO

PRODUCTION SYNERGIES BETWEEN AUTOMOTIVE AND YACHTING SECTORS

AmperAuto is a SME that looks to the yachting sector with a very long experience in the automotive sector of the Turin pole, that of excellence, and it is a perfect example of an electromechanical and electronic productivity able to put on the market cutting-edge Made in Italy devices that are also used in the yachting sector, a sector that is loudly demanding more supplies and (like the others) is going through a period of strong production crisis.

There is a player that skilfully ranges from the automotive to the marine accessories segment: it’s AmperAuto, operating with its three divisions: AmperMarine, Domotic and EMC LAB. AmperAuto deploys crossdivisional synergies that are needed at a time when the market is hungry for productivity, unable to meet demand. AmperAuto’s strategy is backed up by a series of certifications that accompany the company’s ‘charter of values’, including ISO 9001 for “Robust Design”, WCM, also known as “World Class Manufacturing”, and IATF.

THE COMPANY

Established in 1947, AmperAuto AmperMarine headquartershistorical supplier of FIAT group and more recently CNHi group reference supplier for its products, AmperAuto is a 120-employee company that operates in the former Mirafiori factory in Turin.

It has 11,000 square metres of green pavilions, ‘equipped’ with a 400,000 kWh photovoltaic mega-system capable of meeting 75% of its power needs autonomously. That of solar power is an ecological trademark and a source of great pride in terms of corporate social responsibility.

The substantial turnover, reaching 11 million euros in 2020 alone, is the result of a far-sighted business

that looks to automation, speaking both of ‘pragmatic’ science and technology, and of “growth in an area with great potential for logistics and the dissemination of skills”, explains Fabrizio Valle, owner of AmperAuto.

AMPERAUTO E

AMPERMARINE

The company is a leader in several fields, designing and producing electromechanical and electronic devices for the automotive and railway sectors. AmperAuto pursues innovation in all its processes, including mechanical and electronic development and automated production, and does so with great success.

But there is also a crown jewel: the AmperMarine division, which, with its ultra-innovative, wireless lighting solutions, finds ample space in the yachting industry, with a commitment to the “new, refitting and retrofitting” segments. There are two models of spotlights “patented wireless specifically for yachts,” says Fabrizio Valle. It should also be noted that these recreational devices communicate perfectly with the CAN-BUS system used by yachts.

Added to this is the unique EMC LAB division, among the most advanced

and comprehensive of the territory, which includes a laboratory for Electromagnetic Compatibility testing in the civil and automotive fields. The laboratory is designed to provide a complete service for emission and immunity tests, conducted and irradiated, using state-of-the-art instrumentation.

At AmperAuto, the entire production cycle is carried out in-house to ensure “the best possible supervision”. The company, Covid-19 permitting, will be at the next Boot in Düsseldorf, where it will present its range of wireless lighting solutions, designed specifically for yachts.

When a custom-designed, temperature-controlled, 150-bottlecapacity wine cellar greets me as I board the Rosetti 38M at the Palm Beach International Boat Show (PBIBS) where hull No. 1 made her first stateside appearance after an outstanding unveiling at the Cannes Yachting Festival (CYF) in September, my inner voice tells me one thing –expect the unexpected on EMOCEAN!

SUPERYACHTS | ROSETTI 38M EMOCEAN 256 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 257 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022

Whether you prefer sipping a glass of red or white, the layout lifts your spirits. Magnified in immensity by its reflection in the above mirror, the wine cellar not only visually doubles in size, it too divides aft seating from the formal dining room, and separates guest quarters from the forward starboard master stateroom.

The second focus of attention in the main salon – revealing the core character of the 12-passenger floating palace with exterior design and naval architecture by Hydro Tec and BurdissoCapponi Yachts & Designs – is the bespoke Giacinto Bosco art sculpture anchoring the center stairwell.

The situation of the iconic piece lifts more than just your spirits; it optically accompanies you ascending

up the staircase. By the end of my tour with PR and communications manager, Consuelo Bentivogli, a deep connection could be felt between the owners and the Sicilian-born artist whose designs, inspired by the moon and the poetic dimension of dreams, adorn other areas as well.

Apart from the art, EMOCEAN’s seven-by-five foot midship glass flooring panel does its part extracting EMOTION… especially the first time crossing over the clear walkway and glancing ten feet below into the lower deck, when both your heartbeat and pace pick up speed. Sunbeams filtering down level by level from the flybridge skylight naturally enhance the unique visual lucidity provided from the corridor. Bentivogli then tells me – The view by night is even more amazing.

Also noteworthy on the main deck, is the master stateroom setup incorporating a private office sliding partition for separation of areas, walk-in wardrobe, and wonderful fixed-position waterfront balcony just calling your name to stop, sit and smell the roses, or in this case, the salted ocean air!

Moving upward, the open aft bridge deck seals the deal with astonishing, unforeseen elements from minimalist flush speakers imbedded into the doors, to the stylish 1.5 ton tender crane-turned-countertop. Once the 6-meter ZAR Formenti 61 is lowered

into the sea, the one-of-a-kind Crane Sanguineti– crafted of teak to blend in with its surroundings – effortlessly converts into part of the exterior lounge entertainment zone.

Ample anchor points also spread across the deck facilitating the flexible storage of additional jet-skis and such.

And while on the topic of motorized toys, there is indeed a Swedish Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 motorcycle resting on the lower beach club deck, for days when EMOCEAN is docked and a roadside ride is desired over an ocean dive.

Helping to achieve the owners’ goal for long periods of complete ocean independence on the Rosetti 38M EMOCEAN, the number 5,000 resurfaces… this time in nautical miles (9,260 kilometers), which is the 10-knot cruising range capability.

Palpably, the other part of the goal was to produce a structurally safe, sound and serene superyacht. Rosetti Superyachts guaranteed this could be done, seeing that, Rosetti Marino Group transferred a century

of commercial ship building DNA in the oil and gas exploration field to its new luxury yacht division.

In the end, all the goodness on the selfsufficient explorer cost €18.4 million ($20.4 million) and EMOCEAN is available for charter through Camper & Nicholson at €144,800 ($160,000) a week.Pairing the Ravennabased shipyard’s European success story (construction commenced this fall on the second edition of the 38M and prior to the CYF Sunday closure, news surfaced of a 40-meter explorer yacht LOI) with its recent day ravishing reviews from Palm Beach – Expect the Unexpected – with Rosetti Superyachts!

“BEST IN SHOW” BECOMES “BEST OF THE SEA” AT PALM BEACH INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Ocean Alexander might have been lacking long-range motoryachts to fill its slips at the 2022 Palm Beach International Boat Show (PBIBS), but the leading Taiwanese manufacturer is certainly not slacking in sales. Not only is it sold out of current inventory, business is so booming, it bumped Feadship down to fourth place on the 2021 Global Order Book (GOB).

Of the impressive fleet including three brand new models ranging from 30- 37 meters – the 35R is the one to watch! The renowned crown jewel of the Revolution series, designed by Evan K Marshall and Arrabito Naval Architects, took the 62nd Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) by storm, motoring away with the coveted Best in Show triumph

from NBC Sports. The win was only the beginning! Judging from her overnight success and staggering sales record, the Ocean Alexander 35R has gone from “Best in Show” to “Best of the Sea.”

Discussing Ocean Alexander’s prosperous future at the PBIBS, Sally Doleski, vice president of marketing, explains – Following the world premiere, we sold the next two incoming hulls to US buyers at the FLIBS, and No. 3 is set to deliver to Europe late this summer in time for Cannes. What’s more, the fourth and fifth hulls are also under contact.

Although the outer quay was OA-less, once you step on board the new 35R, the exquisite physical beauty and boldness in design take your breath away. To start, she impresses with

luxurious living spaces of prolific proportions comfortably carrying a party of ten. The crew of five also has private passages and discreet stateroom entrances to bypass passenger areas when moving about.

On the aft deck, tradition went out the door by reversing the U-shaped seating arrangement to face the back of the boat. This distinct shift gives guests the ability to observe down below and monitor activities of any young ones in the sea. Then, when outdoor playtime ends and mealtime begins, the press of a button actuates the opening of a stainless-steel framed sliding glass door to enter the salon. And voilà, eyes are instantaneously met with an engineering wonder… floor-to-ceiling windows and a near 360-degree visual.

If you want to be even more floored, first, walk along the marble walkway on the main

deck to the forward master and admire the king-size berth, then head to the master head to marvel in his and her sinks and separate enclosed water closets joined by a center tub and enclosed shower.

Saving “Best for Last,” the 116-foot engineering masterpiece had me at aft beach club. From top to bottom, the cabana gives new meaning to entertaining at sea level. Most impressive from above is the overhead tinted glass window great for day gazing up to the aft deck; and from below, what turns heads is the sauna, workout room and private day head accessed directly from the fold-down swim platform or conversely via a portside staircase.

Ocean Alexander named the series Revolution for a reason – the 35R tells the story why!

NAVETTA 28

YACHT

WHEN GRACE MEETS VIGOUR

After almost a year of intense work to expand its range of displacement yachts, Filippetti Yacht unveils the Navetta 28 concept to the public. This latest creation from the Mondolfobased shipyard confirms the special features of the range, such as great cruising range and compliance with environmental sustainability criteria.

Navetta 28 is another Made in Italy nautical gem and – we expect – will certainly be one of the jewels to talk about at the Miami International Boat Show. Filippetti Yacht will be present in the DG Dock at this overseas event with the 55 Sport, which is increasingly winning over the American market with her sporty, elegant lines. During the boat show it will also be possible to meet the CEO, Giovanni Filippetti, who has confirmed his presence for the entire event.

Navetta 28 is a spectacular superyacht with an overall length of 27.65 meters, a beam of seven and four decks. But what stands out most are the superbly crafted proportions, expressing overall splendid grace and vigour.

Overall, the family feeling of the famous N series, which is always the hallmark of Filippetti Yacht, persists. But when it comes to aesthetics, the Navetta 28’s geometries have been lightened and she is more streamlined on the water. The final effect confirms the imperious forms typical of this type of boats, but cancels out its sometimes awkward appearance.

Navetta 28 is the result of a consolidated collaboration with the well-known designer Fulvio De Simoni, who has contributed to characterizing this superyacht with decidedly modern, highimpact yet sinuous features. This is because Navetta 28 is a full-fledged member of the range of displacement yachts built by Cantiere Filippetti, but Fulvio De Simoni‘s pencil has managed to fascinate connoisseurs by

EXCLUSIVE

going further. How? By eliminating, we repeat, the effect that weighs everything down and forgetting the rough shapes we see elsewhere in the market segment.

Lightness and vigour come together in a harmonious encounter. And it is almost a balance of opposites. The imposing vertical glass surfaces dominate the rest of the structure. “Fulvio De Simoni has an innate ability to enhance contrasts,” explain the shipyard, and how could he not be right?

The outdoor areas of the Navetta 28 are designed to enhance the full enjoyment of cruising and moments of relaxation when at anchor. The Fly deck is very large and can be summed up as a veritable terrace overlooking the sea, open to 360 degrees. From up here, everything is at its best to enjoy breath-taking views.

Moreover, the sundeck is extremely functional and separates slightly into its own rationalised geometry, rising above the small quarters in front. The aim is to guarantee a certain amount of privacy (always appreciated) even during mooring manoeuvres.

If you look carefully, this main deck is a truly imposing bow area, useful for welcoming guests who take advantage of a maximisation of space that has been taken to the top.

SUPERYACHTS | FILIPPETTI NAVETTA 38 274 YACHT DIGEST 275 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022

TRULY BESPOKE

Not surprisingly, the Filippetti boatyard’s aim was to characterize the Navetta 28 with an “unprecedented” sense of spaciousness both inside and out. The layout is also “fully custom” and this gives the owner an almost total customisation experience.

So much freedom means the owner gets his superyacht, almost like a bespoke suit and, as Giovanni Filippetti explains: “This is a real rarity for a yacht of just 28 metres”.

It all adds up to the sense of freedom that the owner craves: he can choose to have five or six cabins and as many facilities. The owner can choose to have five or six cabins and as many en-suite facilities, and can also choose to have the master suite on the upper deck, while enjoying a sea view during the cruise.

The Navetta 28 is powered by two 800hp MAN engines. And it’s all sacred power that contributes to a cruising speed of 13 knots, the top speed being 14.5 knots. One curiosity: this superyacht has stabilizing fins installed for maximum on-board comfort.

As for the boat’s homologation and category, Navetta 28 has RINA CE – A. The fuel tanks have a capacity of 20,500 liters. This means that her cruising range is as high as 3,000 nautical miles, for endless cruises in search of freedom.

WEDGELINE HYBRID 77

FABIANI YACHT LAYS THE KEEL OF THE FIRST ZERO ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT YACHT

Construction of the Wedgeline Hybrid 77, Fabiani Yacht’s revolutionary craft that is set to become the first zero environmental impact superyacht, started a few days ago in Pisa. Equipped with long retractable solar panels, the Wedgeline Hybrid 77 will allow silent, zero-cost and nonpolluting cruising, which will also allow it to enter protected marine areas, usually forbidden to motor boats.

“The first model will be ready by 2023 and will change the yachting world forever,” says Maurizio Fabiani, farsighted designer of the Wedgeline Hybrid 77. “There are many beautiful boats in the world, but none currently have a level of technological innovation comparable to ours.”

The highlights of the Wedgeline Hybrid 77 are not limited to the

solar-powered power supply, but also concern the meticulous design and extraordinary hydrodynamics of the boat: “The hull width of this 77-footer will be the same as the 100-footer model,” explains Mr. Fabiani, “which means it will have unrivalled stability compared to other boats of the same length on the market, which usually have narrower hulls”.

In addition, continues the engineer, “we have worked hard to obtain the lowest possible inclination of the propeller shaft, in order to make the best use of the energy produced to push the boat in the navigation direction, rather than downwards as happens with the shafts of other boats, which tend to look towards the bottom of the sea”.

In addition to the Wedgeline Hybrid 77, Fabiani Yacht has also designed the 101 model, whose construction will

SUPERYACHTS | FABIANI WEDGELINE IBRIDA 77 280 YACHT DIGEST 281 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022

begin shortly and will be completed in 2023. The bigger sister will have no less than six cabins compared to the four of the 77 model, including a panoramic one in the bow, and above all a helm station located on the flybridge, a real living space with sofas and air conditioning.

With the Wedgeline Hybrid 101, Fabiani Yacht has carried out a cruise simulation from Livorno to Corsica in order to demonstrate the total absence of emissions and costs even on long cruises: “Thanks to the substantial battery pack,” Mr. Fabiani explains, “it will be possible to travel at 8 knots starting from Livorno and stopping for a dip on the island of Capraia before reaching Corsica,

from where we can leave the following morning for Elba, to spend a second night before returning to Livorno. With the Wedgeline Hybrid 101 it will be possible to tackle this three-day, twonight voyage exclusively using electric motors powered by solar panels, so in total silence while cruising and, above all, at zero cost and without impacting on the environment”.

The real gem of the Wedgeline Hybrid 101 is the patented platform, which runs on special rails and can be submerged a metre underwater or raised to flybridge level, from where it is possible to dive directly into the sea or create a parapet with ropes and stanchions in just a few moments, for a breathtaking view of the sea.

GIORGIO CASARETO

50 YEARS OF LOVE FOR BOATING

Behind the shining world of yachting, which many tend to see only as an icon of luxury, lies the hard work of many people who have contributed to making this sector unique and inimitable over the years. One of these people is undoubtedly Giorgo Casareto, Director of Marina di Varazze (and more), who in over fifty years of life has dedicated time, talent and dedication to the boating industry with the rare ability to always succeed in putting himself on the line and with the added value of having really started from the bottom to rise to the highest levels. A whole life dedicated to the world of the sea, which we wanted to collect and bear witness to in this video in which the Editor-inChief of The International Yachting Media Luca D’Ambrosio interviews Giorgio Casareto.

Our chat with Casareto goes back a long way, to the very origins of his passion for the sea, which began at the tender age of five when he went out with his parents on a small sailing boat. Later, with the purchase of a larger boat, Mr. Casareto began to undertake longer navigations, such as a tour of Corsica or a voyage to Barcelona: a love that became work when Giorgio was first employed in a small boatyard as a worker and then at Azimut where he still works today. The Marina di Varazze director has very vivid memories of his apprenticeship, which are also fun to listen to, such as his first job scraping the hull of a boat that was then immediately dismantled.

“An incredible adventure began at Azimut, one that I would never have imagined would have reached its current goals,” says Giorgio Casareto in our video interview. “I went from working as a factory worker to aftersales and sales, until I was asked to set up the new Savona office, which I ran until 2008. After that I moved to the historic Avigliana plant, until 2011, when a new path began in Marina di Varazze, where they needed a person to take over the management of the company”.

In short, a story that starts with a humble job and ends with great professional satisfaction. This is why Giorgio Casareto’s advice to young people who would like to enter the boating sector is to “really believe in it”. In fact, he explains, “many young

people with a passion for the sea can achieve extraordinary results, but my advice is always to start from the bottom: even if you have a respectable school education, getting to know this sector starting from the lower levels helps a lot to learn how to manage it”.

But we don’t want to anticipate anything else about the interview, so we invite you to watch the video, where you can get to know Giorgio Casareto not only from a professional point of view but also from a human one; that is, the side made up of memories and anecdotes from which there is always something to learn.

UMBERTO FELCI AND YACHT DESIGN

STYLE MEETS PERFORMANCE

If a survey were to be made among sailors, asking what they thought were the most beautiful sailing yachts ever designed in Italy, we are sure that most interviewees would name Umberto Felci. A multi-award winning designer of wonderful yachts and founder of Felci Yachts together with his partner Lorenzo Giovannozzi, Umberto Felci has been designing yachts for over

25 years with passion and energy, maintaining a refined attention to every detail that makes his boats true works of art. Not surprisingly, his extensive list of accolades includes several “Boat of the Year” awards in numerous categories for well-known projects such as the Dufour 520 Grand Large and the Grand Soleil 58, to name but a few.

Umberto Felci’s dedication to his work is extraordinary and, above all, it has always been focused exclusively on sailing yachts: “A loyalty that I claim even more today,” says the architect, “when there is so much talk of hybrid engines, sustainability and ecology. But there is nothing more hybrid and ecological than a sailboat moving with the wind”. That’s why Umberto Felci, despite the many requests he’s received over the years, has always remained faithful to his first love: “The sailing boat is the only truly sustainable means of transport and, for now, it’s hard for me to let go of this idea. That doesn’t mean that we’re not open to new studies and markets such as low-drag displacement trawlers or motor-powered catamarans, as long as we can always find the right balance between efficiency and sustainability”.

Umberto Felci, how did your passion for sailing boats begin?

” I have been fascinated by boats since I was born. At the age of twelve, I used

292 YACHT DIGEST 293 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022 BOATING INDUSTRY PROTAGONISTS | UMBERTO FELCI

to go sailing on whatever craft I had at my disposal until I was lucky enough to own a second-hand 420. Sailing in my teenage years gave me a great feeling of freedom. When I was young, I used to go out on the lake with my brother and if something went wrong, we had to deal with it ourselves. They were sometimes dangerous situations, because we had no boats and no coaches to support us, but at the same time they generated an unparalleled passion for sailing, the wind, the sea and solitude. Understanding that you could master these elements with your own strengths to get around on a boat, led me to join a sailing club and start racing until I became practically professional with the Olympic 470 and then working for Moro di Venezia in the 1992 America’s Cup”.

What led you to become a yacht designer?

“After high school, I enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture at Milan Polytechnic, where I managed to combine my passion for sailing boats with that for architecture. Thanks to the far-sightedness of my professors, architects Piardi and Nardi, I had the opportunity to carry out specific studies and a degree thesis investigating the subject of composite materials in nautical construction, which was almost in its infancy at the time. It was after I graduated and thanks to this study that I joined the

technical office of Moro di Venezia, and it was at that legendary time that I realized I wanted to design boats for the rest of my life. The first one was commissioned by a friend of mine who wanted a laminated wood dinghy, so in a small boatyard

I started not only to design it, but also to build it physically, expanding my knowledge of west-system wood construction. Then, together with my friend Marco Zancopé, we managed to find some sponsors, including Montedison, who were interested in supplying us and experimenting with new pre-impregnated fabrics, and so in 1993 I signed the first Italian Mini 650 prototype, with which we placed third in the French class championship at our debut.

This result, together with the excellent performances in the Mini preparation races and the potential expressed during the first Transat, started the buzz: Bateaux magazine dedicated a cover to us, other commissions arrived and, as often happens in this sector, one boat led to another”.

Where do you find the impetus to continue to inspire and innovate yacht design?

“The most important decision I made in my career was to move from racing to cruising yachts. I owe this above all

294 YACHT DIGEST 295 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022 BOATING INDUSTRY PROTAGONISTS | UMBERTO FELCI

to my partner Lorenzo, who had the vision to blend our particularities as naval architects, fluid-dynamic engineers and lovers of the sea and life on board, while also seeing the potential of a wider “public”. All this while maintaining in Felci Yachts’ DNA the drive to design fast, high-performance boats as well as comfortable ones.

One example is the design of the first Dufour 40, a boat that was created for pure cruising,

but that some owners decided to use to compete and has extraordinarily won two IMS world championships.

The fact remains that today I think I am lucky to be able to concentrate not only on speed but also on life on board. From cruising boats to fast cruisers, which are now our workhorse, we can afford to make boats increasingly functional, comfortable and safe, studying the interiors down to the smallest

detail and seeking the utmost elegance, and above all combining racing performance with the style of the trendiest yachts”.

As a designer, what is the quality your clients appreciate most?

“We’re not the kind of designers who just design a boat and then don’t bother with the construction phase, which is left to the shipyards. You often hear people say that

designers ‘make two sketches’, but that’s not the case at Felci Yachts. We like to dissect every aspect of the yachts we design, so that when the project is finished the client has a complete, homogeneous, defined and above all buildable idea, because all our work also includes the so-called executive phase”.

In your rich palmares of prizes and awards, is there one that has given you particular satisfaction?

296 YACHT DIGEST 297 YACHT DIGEST JULY 2022 JULY 2022 BOATING INDUSTRY PROTAGONISTS | UMBERTO FELCI

“All awards are satisfying and it is difficult to choose one in particular. Rather, I think that the greatest satisfaction comes not only from the prizes but also from the public: a person who sees one of our boats coming into a bay, recognizes it, appreciates it and notices the difference compared to other boats, is the most positive judgement we can have. The same goes for the positive feedback from the market, which has led, for example, Dufour to produce 400 boats a year or Ice Yachts to sell five 70-footers after presenting the first hull at Cannes”.

What are the future goals for Umberto Felci and Felci Yachts?

“We’re exploring some very innovative concepts at the moment. It’s still too early to say anything more concrete, but I can say in advance that in parallel with the more traditional yachts, which we’re continuing to design, we’re trying to create a boat that is conceptually different, thinking of its use in a broader sense and less dedicated to the narrow elite of sailors. The idea involves more sizes and consists of a more “transversal” sailing boat. In short, we’re thinking of a boat suitable for those who want to continue sailing without having any particular sailing experience, perhaps coming from the motor sector which represents a large pool of potential new owners”.
