INCOMMING NAVARRA THE FIESTA STARTS

PAMPLONA, the fiesta starts

Why

Pamplona?

From July 6th to 14th every year the word fiesta is written in capital letters in Pamplona. The SANFERMINES have arrived. When the chupinazo (ceremonial rocket) is fired the city explodes into life. Thousands of people from all over the world descend on the city, which dresses up in red and white. For nine days the streets turn into a feast of friendship, joy, music and non-stop partying, to the rhythm of the charangas and the peñas. THE ENCIERRO (Bull Run) is the only moment of the day when the party stops, and great tension descends on the route just a few minutes before the bulls start their ‘race’ behind the mozos (young men). The surge of emotions culminates in the bullring at the end of the run. The fiesta continues with caldico (clear broth) chocolate with churros (long doughnuts), the Gigantes (ceremonial giants) and Cabezudos (carnival figures with big heads), the aperitif, the bullfight in the evening, or the fireworks at night. These then give way to all-night partying. AND AFTER THE FIESTA... COMES THE CALM. After experiencing this world-famous fiesta, what better way to enjoy a deserved rest by visiting one the most welcoming parts of Navarre. Relax in the green Pyrenees, stroll through leafy oak and beech woods, or swim in a crystal-clear river. If you prefer, head south to meet the warm and friendly people of La Ribera and the plains under the hot sun, and enjoy the gastronomy of the Ebro valley.

San FermĂn Fiestas Duration: According to programme Availability: From 6tht to 14th July Group size: Up to 200 people

Accommodation reservation The population in Pamplona doubles its size during Sanfermines, and this makes securing accommodation rather difficult for those who wish to visit the city and enjoy the Fiesta. Thanks to our well- established credentials in the tourism sector and our long-standing professional relationship with the city’s main hotels, we are able to pre-book accommodation that will be exclusively available to our clients. Depending on their personal preferences and requirements, our clients can choose amongst a wide range of accommodation, which includes city hotels in Pamplona and charming rural hotels in the surrounding area.

12

Txupinazo Programme Every 6th of July at 12 noon, the “txupinazo” (ceremonial rocket) is fired from the Town Hall’s balcony and this officially opens the Fiesta. Following the tradition, thousands of people, dressed in white and with a red scarf in their hands, start gathering at the Town Hall Square from 10 am, singing and cheering Saint Fermin while they eagerly wait for the designated councillor to fire the “txupinazo”. In that very moment, everybody puts their read scarf round their necks and opens bottles of cava. The whole square “explodes” and turns into a gigantic celebration where everybody starts dancing as the City’s Music Band comes out from the Town Hall and plays while making their way through the crowd. We offer our clients exclusive use of balconies overlooking the Town Hall Square, privileged locations from where they can watch the opening of the festivities and share the emotion of the crowd gathered at the square. Our guides will meet the clients at a hotel located in the city’s old quarters at 10:30 am., Then the clients will be taken to their balconies, where they will enjoy a snack while they are told about the origins, history and traditions associated with Sanfermines and the “txupinazo”. Cold drinks, wine and, of course, cava to toast to the beginning of the Fiesta, will also be included.

13

Bull Run Balconies The Bull Run takes place every morning from 7th to 14th July and starts at 8am, when the bulls leave the Santo Domingo Corral and cover the 830 m distance to the bullring in approximately 3 minutes. There are bull runs in many other localities in Navarra, but the one in Pamplona is very special due to its worldwide fame and to the size of the bulls, which weigh between 500 kg and 700 kg. The international fame of Sanfermines results in the participation of 2,000 -3000 runners each day. The only way to enjoy and participate of this event in life is from a balcony.

VIP Balconies Our programme consists in hiring and securing places for our clients at balconies on the first or second floors of buildings located along the course of the Bull Run, so to live fully the emotion of the race. Our guides and clients will meet at a nearby hotel at 6:30 am and from there they will go to their respective balconies together. Those clients staying at hotels in the modern part o f the city will be picked up by our own bus and taken directly to the meeting point. The clients will be accompanied by one of our guides. Once at the balcony the guide will provide a detailed description of the Bull Run, its origin and history and all the rituals of the race. The guide will also explain some of the traditions followed by the locals and all the small details of whatever happens at that moment in the street. All together will watch the bulls and runners racing by. After those moments full of emotions, and over a breakfast snack, the guide will provide further explanations while clients watch a replay of the televised coverage of the whole Bull Run.

Standard Balconies We also organise the booking of Standard balconies in third and fourth floors along the running course without a local guide service. Once the booking is confirmed the client receives a voucher which will have to be presented at the address and time indicated on it.

14

Breakfasts Following the Bull Run, the Fiesta continues, but it is necessary to recover strength with a good breakfast. Doing this in a quiet and hassle-free venue is nearly impossible due to the huge crowds gathered around the Bull Run route. However, we can offer our clients the following two options to enjoy a relaxing breakfast.

VIP Breakfast The Nuevo Casino Principal is a private club located in a mid 19th century building at the Plaza del Castillo (Castle Square), the very heart of the city. We have exclusive access to the Casino’s Blue Room, where we have arranged a buffet breakfast for our clients. After breakfast our clients will be able to enjoy the Baile de La Alpargata (Espadrille Dance), held at the Casino’s Main Hall and attended sometimes by ambassadors, celebrities and official dignitaries.

Standard breakfast Hassle-free and relaxing buffet breakfast at a hotel located in Pamplona’s old quarters.

Themed tours We offer a wide range of trips and visits that complement the Sanfermines programme, thus allowing our client to get to know other aspects of Pamplona and the Navarrese gastronomy.

6th of July Lunch at the Blue Room in Pamplona’s Nuevo Casino a 150 year old historic building at the very heart of the city and overlooking the festivities. The Chef Jorge Graciawill offer us a tasting menu of new cuisine in these 19th century surroundings.

15

¡SAN FERMÍN! TOUR OF PAMPLONA’S OLD QUARTERS. After the post-Bull Run breakfast we will walk along the streets and we will learn about Pamplona’s history and origins, we will talk about the ROUTE TO SANTIAGO and we will even become pilgrims for a little while, we will have the chance to watch the GIGANTES Y CABEZUDOS. LUNCH AT MOLINO ERROTA RESTAURANT, in Aoiz, a wonderfully restored water mill. There we will be able to watch and learn how to “escanciar” the cider, the technique of pouring the cider from a height directly from the barrel into the glass in order to get air bubbles into the drink and give it the texture of sparkling wine.

OTAZU WINE CELLARS The history of the noble region of Otazu dates back to medieval times. Since then, its buildings, people and architectural richness have developed hand in hand with a thorough dedication to its vineyards and the making of unique wines. Otazu has the most Northern vineyards in Spain where, depending on the characteristics of the soil, varieties such as Merlot, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are grown and strategically combined. A wine tasting session with expert explanations will complement this visit. Following this stimulation of our tasting buds, José y Asun will offer us a novel gastronomic experience, their “cuisine with feeling”, for which they have carefully chosen each of their seasonal ingredients.

16

FINCA LA TEJERÍA Miguel Reta, a herdsman of the Bull Run, will receive us in the Finca (ranch) La Tejería, where Navarrese fighting bulls are bred. This breed is characterised by relatively small, bright red coated bulls which are agile, alert, nervous and aggressive as well as very brave. This breed was at the peak of its popularity between the 18th century and mid 19th century. By the mid 20th century it had lost its importance due to the preferences of the new bullfighting style, which favoured bigger bulls that would ram more readily and therefore, presented less complications to the bullfighter. The visit to Finca La Tejería starts with an introductory explanation of the technical and scientific process involved in the recovery of the Navarrese breed. This is followed by a walk on the countryside where there will be opportunities to get safely close to the free ranging bulls, to feed them and to take part in other routine chores of cattle farming. The visit will end with a “comida campera” (Pic-nic style).

Other excursions For those clients who wish to take advantage of their stay in Pamplona to know other places in Navarre, Basque Country or La Rioja, we offer customised excursions. For any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

17

Other services We offer our clients a wide range of services that could make their visit to Pamplona during Sanfermines much easier. This includes transfers, local guides, arrangements for personalised traditional gifts and souvenirs and reservation of hotel rooms in others localities in Navarre or the rest of Spain.

Transfers We offer a wide choice of high quality private transport, including coaches and minibuses.

Local Guides Tailor-made visits to Pamplona and other Navarrese localities can be arranged through our personal guide tour service. Our guides will accompany you to the places of interest you would like to visit, providing information about the place and facilitating any arrangements you may need to make during your stay.

Nationwide accommodation We can arrange hotel reservations for those clients who would like to complement their stay in Pamplona with visits to other Spanish destinations
