GRAND OPENING IN JANUARY 2018!

Welcome to the December 2017 issue of Kultivate Magazine! This issue features oYo Breedables, the many artists of Kultivate, A photo essay featuring winter animals, The Mill Sim, The Haze Exhibition, The Hollywood Art Museum in Sansar, A Colors of Winter Fashion Photo Essay, and the Edge Stylists present their December stylings. It is hard to believe that this is the last issue of 2017 and that the year has gone by so quickly. 2017 was a year of growth for Kultivate, we continued to expand our gallery offerings and events for both new and established artists and we will continue to do the same in 2018! We are in the process of opening a new gallery in 2018, The Kandis Gallery, which will feature real life based art. The Kandis Gallery is named after my real life late sister, who was a photography major. We hope that the gallery becomes a hub for artists who would like to showcase their real life based images and photography. We will also of course have our art

shows and gallery events in 2018 and we hope to have the very first Second Life Gallery crawl in Spring of 2018. We also will continue our focus on all art forms, with the return of the Kultivate Collection Literary Magazine, a fashion event, The E.V.A Project, and a music festival. Eleseren and I would like to thank everyone who has supported us the past year. We could not do what we do at Kultivate without each and everyone of you—from the artists to visitors to our sim to our magazine readers. We hope that everyone has a safe and happy Christmas and New Years! Very special thank you to my beautiful other half in both worlds-Eleseren. Honey you give me the strength, love, and support in both worlds that carries me throughout life. Love you always. John, Owner & Publisher of Kultivate Magazine

FEATURED THE ART OF BREEDABLES &

ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAP

D ARTICLE: & GIVING: oYo BREEDABLES

PHY: VERUCA TAMMAS

This month I had the pleasure of working with the administration and some of the staff for OYO Breedables during the Team Diabetes Winter Showcase and Art Show. OYO generously supported the organization by creating beautiful one-of-a-kind breedable sabers for the event and auctioned off some rare and unique breedables at their headquarters.

In addition to their horses and dodos their market in Second Life OYO has expanded to include bears, wildcats (including the sabers), pigs, elephants, dogs and fuzzys (similar in look to those playful Gremlins). The OYO Fuzzys or FuzzyBuzzys are more whimsical and fun. They are like little teddy bears that you can dress up and there are even toys for them to play with and dollhouses for them OYO was founded in 2014 by Alfy to live in. They either look like (alfredozappa1) and Jenni their sweet and innocent or up to Eales. Afly is not only one of the some naughty mischief. Fun is the founders but does all the mesh and key! 3d modeling for each species and Jenni creates all the scripts which I met Cato Oh, General Manager bring them to life and Durga for OYO and Clover Hixantapo, OYO (durgama.greatrex) creates the Event Manager, during the Winter textures. They were first Showcase and Cato was kind established in InWorldz with their enough to give me a tour of the breedable horses and a few OYO sim and explained the months later they moved into company’s background and the Second Life with their dodo philosophy behind some of the breedables. OYO also has a present in Sansar.

designs used for the coats of the different breeds. Most of the staff team have been breeders for many years and know the market. Alfy and Jenni listen to breeder community feedback and started with the breeds that people were missing most in their virtual worlds. OYO began with the horses and dogs and then started to create unique species like the dodos and fuzzy buzzies. The OYO sim is open to everyone and houses several shops, an auction area, an actual race course, and the OYO Academy. Alfy and Jenni are the driving force and creative team behind the brand and in Second Life the company has about 11 support staff who reside in a number of countries (Germany, Spain, Holland, UK, US, Norway and Canada) which allows them to serve customers in any language. I asked Cato about the designs used in the coats and fur of the breedables. When OYO creates a horse’s coat they are trying to emulate, as closely as possible, designs that have been used in RL horses or patterns shaved into a

horse’s coat. He shared a website illustrating this effect of intricate designs called body clipping: http://www.horseandman.com/ horse-stories/body-clippingart/05/20/2017/. OYO has a “true to life” series of Shetland ponies, Arabians and Clydesdales which are based on their real life counterparts. He explained that in the breeding process the unique coats will pass onto the offspring but the unique symbols won’t. For example, the sabers created for Team Diabetes have the words Hope for a Cure cut into their coats and the blue diabetes symbol on them. The coloring will pass to the offspring but the symbols will remain with the parents. He also showed me one of the first horses created by OYO with a stunning coat of cobalt blue, the skeleton horses (perfect for Halloween or Dia de los Muertas) and a retired horse beautifully covered with Native American symbols. Cato also explained something I kept hearing at their benefit auction, the difference between a tame and wild breedable. The

odds are 1-30 that a breedable will be tame which makes it rare. You can ride a tame breedable or have it walk by your side in the case of the bears and wildcats. The tame breedables are rarer and worth more at auction. OYO horses also have the capability to support 2 riders for those who want to ride as a couple.

support they gave to Team Diabetes was incredible and heartfelt.

Now some of you may know from my previous articles that I was skeptical of the world of breedables because of my experience with the Dwarfins…..well I’m happy to say that I am now the proud owner of OYO also believes in supporting the several OYO breedables of my needs of their breeders through own. I’m looking forward to see the OYO Academy. Here they offer what the offspring will look like as I courses for those who wish to raise my Team Diabetes Sabers, my become a certified auctioneer in Mastiffs and my very special Second Life and classes about each Chihuahuas (Ruby and MooMoo). of the breedables. They also have KM a weekly photo contest with prizes for the best photo highlighting Kultivate and Team Diabetes their breedables. A great way to would like to thank Team oYo for win some food or fervor (if you their interview and for the want to know about fervor attend a awesome and generous donations class). to the 2017 Team Diabetes season. THE MILL

GRAPHY: INARA PEY

It’s always a pleasure to visit The Mill, the homestead region designed by Shakespeare (SkinnyNilla) and Max (Maxie Daviau). It’s a place we’ve paid numerous visits to, on account that it receives a seasonal rebuild, so when Shakespeare dropped an invitation for Caitlyn and I to drop in and see the Winter 2017 build.

Here the route divides once more, one track leading up a hill and under the boughs of a giant Virginia Oak to a house atop the hill, the other running around the base of the hill. This lower road follows the high bank of the river to As is the tradition with The Mill, a where a set of stone steps visit commences at the titular leads up to the lower end of location for the region: the great a sleigh run – the upper end stone mill, currently located in the not far from the hilltop south-east corner of the region. house. For those who prefer not to explore with the audio stream active (as we generally do), there’s a gentle ambient sound scape for the region, complete with some seasonal touches with the help of Nat “King” Cole, Dean Martin and – I believe – Matt Munroe at the carousel. EXHIBITION THE HAZE IN

ARTICLE: & PHOTOG

SPOTLIGHT: SECOND LIFE

GRAPHY: INARA PEY

Now open at CKB Art Gallery curated by Ceakay (CK) Ballyhoo is The Haze. It is the latest installation in a series of living stories featuring art and focused on the adventures of a principal character, whose journey we are invited to follow in words, images and settings. For The Haze, CK returns to her own character of Ellie, who featured in A Watercolor Wander (read here for more) and The Forest Beyond (read here for more) in a collaborative story developed with 2D and 3D artist Silas Merlin. “It was an offer I couldn’t refuse,” CK says of the installation. “An offer from Silas to use his new builds and sketches to form a story. Using Silas’s new digital sketches and the ruins and creatures he has created, a world started to form, darker than anything we’ve either done before, the story turned into a nightmare: Ellie’s nightmare.” The result is a full region installation far removed from the green and pleasant lands of the first two instalments of Ellie’s

dream world adventures. Instead, visitors find themselves in a desert -like, ghostly landscape, heavy with a dusty haze (I recommend exploring using the default windlight). Instructions on following the story can be found at the landing point – and should be read. In short, look for the little illuminated STORY stones set on the ground along the way, each one presents a chapter in the unfolding nightmare. Another difference between this and Ellie’s previous adventures is that not only are the chapters presented in note card form when the stones are clicked, but approach a stone will trigger it being read to you – just have local sounds enabled (*not* the audio stream) to hear the readings. These readings can actually overlap one another, depending on how many are playing when you visit, and where you are in relation to the different stones. This might annoy some; for me, they actually added extra ambience: whispering ghostly voices, overlapping but each telling a story – if you listen

carefully and focus on just one of the voices.
