Art can be a rewarding experience and a positive way to let out steam and to try something different. Eleseren and I would like to thank everyone who has supported us the past year. We could not do what we do at Kultivate without each and everyone of you—from the artists to visitors to our sim to our magazine readers. We hope that you enjoyed your new years and are also enjoying 2018 so far! Very special thank you to my beautiful other half in both worlds-Eleseren. Honey you give me the strength, love, and support in both worlds that carries me throughout life. Love you always.

ART EXHBITIO THREE ARTISTS AT GALLER

ARTICLE & PHOTOG

N SPOTLIGHT: RY CECILE IN SECOND LIFE

GRAPHY: INARA PEY

Gallery Cecile is a complex of eight display spaces for artists, curated by Cécile (Pierce Taurog). It is devoted to exhibiting art from both the physical world and Second Life, and from the former, is currently exhibiting selections of art by Salvador Dali (1904-1989) and Roger Suraud (1938-2016), which can be found in the gallery’s 0 and 1 exhibition halls (the latter of which forms the main entrance. Both are excellent displays, which the Dali exhibit offering links to the Wikipedia pages. However, for this review, I’d like to focus on three Second Life artists: Dixmix Source, Rose Beaumont and Sakura Taurus. Dixmix Source can be found in exhibition hall 3 at the gallery. Entitled I Don’t Get Lonely When I’m Alone, his display features 10 minimalist black-and-white images, nine of which feature a single male figure, sometimes seen clearly, at others appearing slightly blurred or ghosted, framed within a landscape or setting. At first look, there appears to be certain pathos in several of the images, which on closer

examination slowly morphs into something else, which I can only describe as a sense of “all-oneness”. While the figure may initially appear to be alone, lost within a setting, a second look reveals something else: a man who may be on his own, but who appears to be at one with his surroundings. There is a certain ease in the way he sits or stands; while some of his poses may suggest an attitude of “leave me alone”, so to do the images as a whole suggest he’s actually entirely comfortable with his condition and location. Simply put, he’s never lonely while on his own: his surroundings offer him all he needs. The final picture in the series presents a different view of aloneness: what appears to be a tiny sapling (or perhaps a single twig of a tree) set against a white background, offering s singular image of the beauty of nature. As well as the images, Dix has prepared a soundtrack for the exhibition – click on the sign in the exhibition hall for the URL.

Above this, in gallery 4, is Eclectic Rose, by Rose Beaumont (Rose Bomse). A series of ten avatar portraits, these stand in strong contrast to I Don’t Get Lonely When I’m Alone through the opulent use of color within most of them; however, they also in some respects continue the theme of individual studies offered by Dix.

photographer (framing one eye as if looking through viewfinder), the repeated motif representing her name, the overall suggestion of sensuality and the idea that this is just one aspect of a multi-faceted personality.

As with Dix, many of these images suggest that being alone is not equitable to be lonely – some “I like taking pictures that tell a directly, others in a more subtle story alone or with models,” Rose manner of posing and setting. The says of her work. “My tastes in sentiments within each of the photography are quite eclectic and images are somewhat revealed by vary with the inspiration of the their individual titles, but this moment and my mood but always doesn’t stop the eye and the mind with a concern for quality and from using each title as a launching details. The majority of these images, if not all of them, appear to feature the Taking the ramp upwards from same model (Rose herself?). Rose will bring visitors to exhibition Narrative is strong in most of them, area 6 (area 5 was empty during with one at least carrying our visit), an exhibition by Sakura something of a self-statement – Taurus, entitled Pour la Picture This Rose – which I found Postérisé! (For the Posterized!) – a to be both captivating and layered, celebration of the art incorporating Rose’s photography of pasteurization. Five paneled as a whole, her passion as a images are presented, all with a

Japanese theme and shot around Second Life (I think I recognize Collins Lands in one, but am not 100% sure). All are presented on multi-panel frames, and each has been gently posturized, in keeping with the theme of the display. I’m personally not a fan of this form of art, but confess to finding the five images offered by Sakura attractive. I’m obviously biased towards anything oriental in nature, so this may be a part of it – but it is not the sole reason. All five images show a more nuanced, subtle approach to pasteurization than is perhaps more usually the case; so often the process is very “in your face”, so to speak, in the degree to which it has been used and in the use of color. The five pieces presented by Sakura are altogether far more gentle in

approach, to the extent that they suggest a blending of pasteurization and traditional painting – which ideally, in my opinion, suits their subject matter. These, and the remaining exhibitions on offer make Gallery Cecile a very worthwhile visit – one deserving of having time put aside to appreciate the various displays fully. After enduring freezing temperatures, snow, and eternal winter darkness in RL I was looking for a warm and sunny beach to while away an hour or two in SL and I found Fairhaven. The sim, created by Jus Strat (jus4strat), Lαdyвυg Strat (liloneladybug) and Taтїaииa (tatiannadiamond) re-opened in October 2017 The location profile describes it as “An adult beach with a tropical jungle, multiple intimate areas, surfing and photo opportunities at every turn. Monthly events for group members along with rezz rights and free group gifts. https:// www.flickr.com/groups/ fairhavensl/ “

activity (I took my husband to explore some of those). I also think there are some opportunities for those who are interested in roleplay or exploration. The landmark arrival point is the beach are where you’ll find a teleport board for the other locations: The City of Fairhaven, the Jungle, the Lighthouse, the Train Depot, Fairhaven Drive-In, or Stratography.

The beach area has gaming spots, surfing and quiet places to just lie in the sun and listen to the waves or cuddle. There are also beach cottages and a restaurant right on the water which are open for all to use. I took a turn at the grill and There is so much detail in each slapped around some burgers for area that it takes days to explore anyone hungry enough to stop by and find all the hidden treasures. I for a snack. went back for several days and I’m still finding new builds and poses to Both the Lighthouse and the Jungle try. This sim is a photographers areas are within walking distance DREAM!!!!! I honestly don’t think from the beach and blend I’ve seen a place in SL with more seamlessly from one to the other. I areas to pose and take photos and loved the wooden plank walkways the poses are really good. that lead from the beach to the Fairhaven is an adult rated sim and Lighthouse. There’s a cozy little there are many areas for intimate sandy area by the lighthouse for

for couples and singles and more great opportunities for photos. The jungle area didn’t really seem like a typical jungle, more like a rainforest. There’s a large open stone space with a huge playable chess set, cuddle spots and more adult spots. Walking further into the jungle you will see a few animals and a safari campsite that is reminiscent of a scene from the movie “Out of Africa”. At the farther end you’ll find two more buildings, a bathhouse a cliff house overlooking the sea. Both were perfect for photography and intimate settings. The City of Fairhaven, the Train Depot, the Drive-in and Stratography teleports take you to another location but all four are in walking distance of each other. The city has a little bit of everything and then some/ There is an urban side with older, more distressed buildings: an old motel, the police station and even an adult movie

set. Closer to the train station location you’ll find the Graceland wedding chapel (yes - every Elvis fan’s dream wedding location), a magic shop with hearses outside for both cuddling and more intimate activities, the town square, shops and store fronts. The city also has the Fairhaven ballroom which even though is now a bit time-worn has a beauty that still shines through from the past. You’ll also find an old carnival for those who enjoy amusement rides in the rain. Fairhaven is just a slice of heaven in SL. Take the time to visit and wander especially you photographers out there! when you are close to the ground. The major locations open to visitors comprise the aforementioned lighthouse, a bar, a bath house / gym complex with a terrace before them, complete with a playable game of chess; a nearby bar and beach (with beach cabins, which have their own teleport option), a sauna a little more out in the wilds, a camp site, and a pier where sailing and rowing boats are moored. All of these destinations are within easy walking distance of one another across the south extent of the region, with the beach, cabins and pier to the west, and the sauna up in the rock uplands to the east. Most of the southern side of the land resembles a small resort town, nestled under craggy shoulders of sheer rock faces. This is the home of the elevated terrace and gym / bath house facilities (indoors and out), together with a small club house looking out over the snow-covered terrace. Beneath this, to the west, and linking it with the beach and pier, is a small commercial parade, with various businesses including a

cozy café, a studio, a gentlemen’s hairdressers, the bar (through the door and downstairs), and what appears to be a gallery awaiting occupation. With cobbled paving and a small outdoor seating area with gazebo, fire pit and fountain, this part of the region is watched over by the red-roofed lighthouse. It’s well worth exploring this side of the region carefully, as there are numerous footpaths winding their way around it. Some – such as the one leading under a rock arch to the beach on the west shore, may be obvious to the eye, other – such as those leading off the trail to the sauna – perhaps less so. The later in particular offer an excuse for a walk, and when followed reveal one or two more points of interest. The private residences, as noted, are on the north side of the region, and physically separated from the rest of the land by a lake served by two channels of water – all of which are currently frozen in the winter setting. When exploring, it can be tempting to

slip across the ice and continue wanderings on that northern shore – so please do keep in mind Kere’s request to respect the privacy of the residents there, and stay away from that side of the region unless invited.

plenty of opportunities for the Second Life photographer, either using the default windlight or under assorted daytime settings – I opted to take some of mine under a morning setting. KM

Second Life offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy music, films, dancing and dance troupes in Second Life; however, R. Crap Mariner and Marx Dudek bring all of these together deep inside the bowels of Mount Edloe, on Crap’s home region of Edloe. It is here, either reached via the road winding up the mountain from the lands beneath, or via direct teleport, visitors can find three interconnected venues: The Listening Room, The Screening Room and the Bad Luck Steak Gallery. “The Listening Room (or TLR for short),” Marx explains, “Began as a private place for me to lure friends out of my IM box and into a common space where I could chat with them all at once – with the promise of music. I try to play a set every Wednesday night from 68pm SLT. Feel free to stop by!” TLR is the largest space (by volume) in the mountain, offering something of an industrial chic environment of high brick walls, shipping containers, pipes and

metal catwalks and stairs. The shipping containers form the backdrop to a DJ’s booth, with pallets and trolleys topped with mattresses, bolsters and cushions offering a cosy sitting area close by, alongside an impressive collection of vinyl records. Billy Bragg, Bowie, the Goons and more look down from posters on the walls, while HMV is celebrated via graffiti on one wall. Opening off of The Listening Room, but connected to it over all four levels, the Bad Luck Streak Gallery is curated by Crap and is a showcase of dance troupes from across SL, (and also of Crap’s own photography). Each level of the gallery space has a number of framed slide shows on display – each representing the work of a specific dance troupe in Second Life. Click an image on any frame for a dialogue box of options, including paging back / forward through the slides and receiving a copy of any individual images you like. My friend Sho Kyong got me into Dance Performance in Second Life. She kept inviting me to Guerilla Burlesque performances, and I finally made the time to see for myself. Now, I roam from performance to performance, trying to capture a moment of motion and emotion. I did my best to display as many groups as possible here, but I only have so much wall space and prims to work with. And I don’t know about every dance group in Second Life.” Personally, I think this is a superb resource for anyone wishing to discover, with almost 40 troupes represented, and Crap unsells the emotions caught in the images.

With a foyer area offering an eclectic mix of movie posters and where refreshments might be had, a red carpet lead the way to the screening room proper. “A long time SL dream of mine realized,” Marx says of it. “I finally have a movie theatre! I will be showing films every Wednesday, and other nights as well. Foreign films, classic films, B-movies, documentaries, music movies, and more!” At the time of my visit, the film on offer was 2007’s Fears of the Dark, scheduled for a Thursday – although I confess, I’m not sure which Thursday.

Aech’s Garage is a joint collaboration between Linden Lab (via their Sansar Studios team), HTC, Intel, and Warner Brothers Entertainment to recreate the film set of Aech’s Garage from the upcoming Amblin Entertainment / Village Roadshow Pictures film Ready Player One, the motion picture of Ernest Cline’s 2011 best seller. In the novel and film, Aech (pronounced “H”) is best friend to Wade Watts, the novel’s protagonist – at least within OASIS, the two never having met face-toface – who operates out of a basement location in the book. For the film, Aech’s base has been moved to a vast garage-cumwarehouse unit, and it is this space that has been recreated in Sansar with the formal title [HTC] Ready Player One – Aech’s Garage.

science fiction – the move is a treasure trove of sights. A long, comparatively narrow building, the garage is partially lit by a low Sun streaming in through the grime layered windows along one wall. This casts a good part of the experience into shadows which I suspect aren’t as quite as intrusive in VR mode as they can be when visiting in Desktop Mode. Klieg lights scattered around the building offer additional pools of light.

Entering via the Sansar Atlas spawns visitors at one of the building’s two ends, and from the start the level of detail is impressive. The lighting is very realistic, while the texturing and finish is superb. There are work bays, metal steps leading up to platforms and elevated work spaces, tools are scattered on work tops, bins, tires and other detritus of an old working environment fill For purists, the move might be spaces and rise on tall racks seen as an annoyance and typical standing against walls and of Hollywood’s tinkering with windows. But all this is just the aperitif, so to speak. The real feast lies in what can be found within this garage. Depending on which end of the building you spawn, you’ll find yourself either being watched by the Iron Giant from the 1999 film of the same name, or find yourself confronted by ED-209 from 1987’s Robocop – fortunately without its guns focusing on you with an ominous warning that you have 30 seconds to comply. The detail on both is superb, and the Iron Giant really gives a sense of scale. Split into two parts of upper body and head, with legs alongside, it is simply huge.

Sitting under these, a little incongruously, is the prized 1961 Ferrari GT California Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) persuaded Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) to snag the keys for from his father in the 1986 teen movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. While across the central aisle is a mechanoid loader of a similar kind to those seen in the Alien movies, with a model of Eagle 5 from Spaceballs suspended overhead.

As noted, the visual aspects of this experience are superb, in Desktop mode it leaps out at you, and I’ve little doubt that in VR it will look Nor are these the only models stunning. What is especially here. Sitting between them, down interesting about it is that it is a tie the sunlit side of the garage are a to a forthcoming major motion Mark 2 Viper from Battlestar picture, due to be released on Galactica (original and reMarch 30th, 2018, and perhaps imagined), suspended from the marks the first attempt to use roof alongside an Earth Defense Sansar in one of the market spaces Directorate fighter from Buck where it could have some traction: Rogers in the 25th Century, and a marketing and PR. While this is good for Sansar, it means that audio-wise there is a lot going on audio-wise within the experience, and it can get distracting with multiple overlapping conversations, even with Voice roll-off over distances. I frequently found myself getting caught between overlapping conversations and manually muting those I didn’t want to hear (including, I’d add, staff talking bugs and users over open microphones!). KM

In this particular case, it is entirely fitting that a film which might help promote wider interest in VR is gaining some degree of added promotion from VR. I’m curious to see if Linden Lab / Warner Brothers / HTC plan to do more with the experience between now and the US theatrical release of the film at the end of March 2018, particularly given the way the début – through the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, Las EXPERIENCE SLURL: Vegas, courtesy of Intel – has been https://atlas.sansar.com/ presented to the public at large. experiences/sansar-studios/htcAceh’s Garage is without a doubt a ready-player-one-aech-s-garage powerful demonstration of Sensor's potential, and a delight to visit. In my journey as a member of the modeling community, I have amassed a wealth of information. This is something that I would like to share with you, the reader. That wasn’t an invitation to ask. :) These skills ensure that you are doing the right thing on the runway. Putting the product in the best light. Solidifying your reputation in the modeling world.

Please feel free to email me with questions or suggestions for articles you would like to hear about in the future.

Anything I do or write is to help mold our modeling community. It is also to try to make it an inviting environment others want to be a part of. Simply, Stavaros Gracemount KM
