Welcome to the January 2017 issue of Kultivate Magazine! I am proud to usher in another year with you! This issue features a hot topic in Second Life right now: Bento. You will read about the technical and fashion aspects of this game changer in Second Life. This issue also features Mr. SL 2017, Kess Crystal, The Abstract Line Gallery, Mainland Bridges, The artists of Kultivate, New Year’s Resolutions, 2017 Second Life Predictions, and The Edge Stylists present their winter looks. When ushering in another year, we take time to reflect on the previous year and how we can do things differently in both our lives in the new year. A new year can start off with promise or it can start off with sadness or disappointment. These are things that we cannot control in our lives. With time, things change. People who we love in both worlds may no longer be with us and places and habits may change. Of course a new year can bring the sound of new opportunities and people in your both of your lives that can enrich it and allow you to grown as a person both mentally and physically. In 2017 I will hit the big 40, which is a milestone that most women hate, but for me I see myself ready for another decade of fatherhood, growth, and more! Eleseren and I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe New Years and a great start to 2017!

BENTO FROM A TO Z PART 1: LAYING BARE BENT’S BONES

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY: INARA PEY

FEATURED ARTICLE

There can now be few - even among those having only joined Second Life in the last few months - who cannot be aware of project Bento, the work to significantly enhance the Second Life avatar skeleton to better support mesh avatar models, how they are animated and how they might be customized. I publicly covered the project through my blog from the moment it was officially announced on December 16th, 2015. However, I was actually involved in the project, albeit under an NDA, from the moment the Lab started approaching Second Life mesh content creators, far back in May / June 2015, and so was given a unique opportunity to witness the project unfold. Bento’s origins lie with a single person: Vir Linden. Although the skeleton is regarded as one of the core pillars of Second Life, and so not to be played with lightly for fear of the degree of content breakage and other issues which might occur should something go wrong when doing so, Vir was convinced things could be done to make the lot of mesh avatar creators and animators much easier, and without putting additional stress on either the simulator or the server (in fact Bento has in some ways lightened the viewer's load - hence the step up in things like frame rates noted by many Firestorm users in the Bento version of that viewer)‌...

It is actually these three - Cathy, Gaia and Matrice - who, together with Vir, deserve special recognition for their work on Bento. Not only did they have the kind of knowledge with the Second Life skeleton to appreciate how things might be done, they had the vision to point to ideas the Lab hadn’t considered, and the technical skill to take on a lot of the grunt work involved in updating essential code used by the viewer to make Bento happen - and they were enthusiastic about doing so.

If you make use of Bento, particularly a Bento head, and are adjusting things using the sliders, offer a word of thanks to Cathy, Gaia and Matrice: they’re the people who painstakingly went through the avatar files in the viewer and carefully hooked-up all the necessary slider support to the new bones (as far as was possible), often dealing with moving targets as bugs and problems occurred and changes and updates had to be made along the way, in order for you to be able to do so.

The Bento Group meetings were initially held on a desert island on the Main grid (that’s Vir in human form on the left, with Matrice Laville beyond him on the left in the top hat - the chap under the top hat on the right is Rider Linden) KULTIVATE MAGAZINE-

Bento enables much more flexibility when creating and animating human and non-human mesh avatars At this point, the “new skeleton had stabilized with some 92 additional bones - 60 of which were evenly split between hands and head. However, with a wider cross-section of creators now involved, more ideas were put forward and new requests for meeting animation cases which had slipped through the closed alpha phase of the project came forward. Such was the enthusiasm for Bento within the Lab and among those in the original closed alpha group, that attempts were made to incorporate as many of the new

ideas as possible, leading to some bones being removed, newer bones added, the functionality of some bones changed, and so on. There were even some fundamental shifts made in how Second Life functions so that more could be achieved through Bento. An example of this lies with bone translations and rotations, which cropped up early in the open beta. In short, the SL animation system had always worked on the assumption that sliders only affect translation and scale whilst KULTIVATE MAGAZINE-

JANUARY 2017

animations only affect rotation, allowing both to work cooperatively. But with Bento, animators found they could also leverage bone translations, which could lead to conflicts when attempting to run animations on avatars modified using the sliders. While some (who notably sat themselves outside of the project) saw forum venting and name-calling the required response to this "oversight", those engaged on the project went through matters with the Lab, who were keen to better understand the advantages in allowing translations and rotations via animations, with the result that the desired behavior changes were wholeheartedly adopted and implemented.

between Lab and users to make significant changes to a fundamental aspect of Second Life. As such, it could well become the benchmark for managing future projects which could benefit from similar levels of engagement between the two. For me, what was particularly interesting was noting how some attitudes towards the Lab changed along the way, and how willing the Lab was to accept that there are circumstances where users know a hell of a lot more about how others might use a capability in ways otherwise not considered - and then strive to take those use cases into consideration.

Bento also provided plenty of illustrations of how closely things It has been this kind of are interwoven within the viewer collaboration which has marked code can make seemingly “easy Bento. It is not the first time the changes a lot more complex than Lab has worked with users - Fitted might appear to be the case. For Mesh, Server-Side Baking (avatar example, it was discovered that appearance) and Avatar Complexity quadruped avatars using the new all saw input from users, TPVs and bones frequently sank into the open-source contributors and ground up to their ankles / hocks others to varying degrees and we when seen by other users. The also have the assorted Lab / user in issue was traced back to how the -world meetings - Bento is perhaps viewer calculates the avatars the most collaborative effort position relative to the "ground",

and how frequently this calculation is updated. The calculation is actually complicated and involves a number of bones in the avatar, from feet to top of head, which are used to determine the avatar's height, and from that, the offset required to make it appear is if the avatar is standing on the ground. The "easiest" solution for the problem should have been to simply allow the height offset calculation to run continuously, forcing the viewer to correctly re-position quadrupeds "on" the

ground rather than "in" it. However, because the calculation runs for all avatars seen by the viewer, and because multiple bones are used to determine each avatar's position relative to the ground, it was found that while doing this solved this issue for placing quadrupeds on the ground, it introduced a whole new problem for avatars which might be naturally animating any of the bones used by the height offset calculation. Instead of animating naturally, such as if flexing their knees up-and-down, these avatars would be seen as apparently

The Bento skeleton can also be used to create ridable avatar extensions, presents the potential for clothing such as gowns and cloaks to move more naturally, and for mesh hair to possibly be animated KULTIVATE MAGAZINE-

bouncing up and down on the spot. This was because the height offset calculation was running continuously, it was effectively "seeing" the animated bone in two different positions when calculating the avatar's height offset, causing the viewer to move the avatar up-and-down between the two positions. Thus, what should have been a relatively simple solution for a problem resulted in a lot of investigative work to find a suitable resolution for issues.

oftentimes came the need to further tweak and change settings managing things like the appearance sliders in the viewer. However, as the number of major bugs and issues dwindled, so did the desire to see Bento “out in the wild as a full release. Excitement among the broader SL user community was growing, particularly as demo items such as mesh heads, mesh hands, animal avatars - and even full products started to appear. Thus, with the Bento viewer in the release channel and a candidate viewer, from September 2016 onwards, the focus narrowed to getting Bento released - which finally occurred on December 5th 2016 - over 18 months after Vir first pitched his proposal to the rest of the Lab. Since they, the majority of maintained TPVs have adopted the code, bringing Bento support to the vast majority of Second Life users.

It was in part trying to solve a myriad of issues like this, and trying to gently tweak things just that little bit further to allow for X or Y, as well as making more fundamental changes to the system (as with the translation / rotation issue) is pretty much why Bento took so long to gestate. Everything had to be tested carefully not only for unintended consequences such as avatars suddenly bouncing up-and-down rather than animating or other unexpected But this doesn’t necessarily mean behavior, but also tested as far as the end of work on the SL avatar. A was realistically possible against number of ideas were put forward potential breakage of older during the user group meetings content. And of course, the more which had to be placed outside the things were tweaked and improved, scope of the Bento project.

However, feature requests were raised on some of them - and have been accepted by the Lab. This doesn’t automatically mean they’ll come to pass, but the Lab is looking at the matter of follow-on projects from Bento for the future, so it is possible at least some - or possibly other ideas may be realized down the road.

which, by definition isn’t as malleable as the default system avatar (which has the benefit of being able to use morphs when changing elements within it). Again, as an example, just because a Bento head does use the sliders, doesn’t mean you can plonk it on tweak a few things and you have an exact replica of your system face. Not all the slider may work as Of course, like all things, Bento extensively as they do with the does have its own foibles, complex- system avatar form - thus patience ities and limitations. So it’ll be interesting to see how much of an impact the new avatar skeleton has on Second Life in the coming year! MAINLAND MATTERS

MAINLAND MATTERS: THE BRIDGES OF THE MAINLAND ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAPHY: KINN FIACHRA

"Oh, What I'd Give For A Moment Or Two..."

The title above is from a song called Sous Les Ponts De Paris (Under The Bridges of Paris). There are some amazing bridges in First Life, including those over the Seine in Paris. I loved this recent article about that beautiful city auctioning off the infamous Love Locks taken from the Ponts des Arts bridge (among others). From grand architectural feats like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the wooden covered bridges that span the creeks in my area of Pennsylvania, bridges are often more than just practical ways of getting from one point to another. They inspire songs, movies, and books, where they often show up as meeting places, or symbolize important life transitions. It's been a long few weeks since my last post, during which First Life has thrown me several unexpected curve-balls that have meant less time available to go inworld, and even less time for blogging. However, throughout the turmoil, the images of bridges kept coming into my head, so I thought I'd do a quick post on some of my Mainland favorites. I hope you enjoy these Second Life marvels as much as I do‌. KULTIVATE MAGAZINE-

BENTO FROM A TO Z PART 2: FINDING MY UNIQUE LOOK AS A MODEL WITH A BENTO HEAD ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRA PHY: ELESEREN BRIANNA

KULTIVATE MAGAZINE-

JANUARY 2017

PAGE 209

Bento heads recently launched into and ride the crest of the wave in SL, and I wanted to write about terms of having a 'current' look them from my experience of a (another thing a model really has to Model, adapting one to my personal do). I see more and more models in 'look' Facebook and Flickr posting images of their new Bento head. I also see For a model, especially an the messages about the trials and established model, her 'look', her tribulations (and successes) of face, is part of her brand models attempting to achieve their identity. Models do change their unique faces again on it. look from time to time but it is something they consider carefully, I want to share with you a little of and is often a development of their my own experience of recreating current look, changing my own very distinctive appearance incrementally. in Bento. It was a very interesting challenge. I had previously avoided A model's unique look is made up of buying a mesh head as I wanted to her shape and her skin, then retain my distinctive look, but I had perhaps specific makeup to add the pledged to get one when they final polish and definition (I have became modifiable with sliders. lived in my Soiree Cheek Contour for years for example). The next thing I did was decide on the skin to apply. My classic avatar wears a League skin, but it is several years old and there isn't an applier for it. Logically I decided I would be best going for a skin with appliers from the same maker, as it would have a similar signature 'style' to mine. I was lucky and found a compatible skin applier which was not wildly different to mine (apart from hair base). I leave this choice to you, but my personal recommendation would be buy the Bento head first, the skin second and then start modding. Now for the hard part. I had my Flickr open with a good clear image of my classic avatar's head for reference, and I referred to it a lot. I also stripped my classic avatar of all my usual applied makeup and eyelashes, and took a snap of it bare faced, also for reference. I decided not start with the included shape that came with the Bento head, as I didn't want to recreate all of my body shape before I started on the head. It felt like extra work for no reason to me, but again it was just personal preference. I used instead a copy of

my current shape (which I made from scratch so is full perm for me and I also saved versions of the new shape as I progressed, in case I needed to back track a few steps). What a horror then ensued when I first put the Bento head on my standard classic avatar shape - eek! It was immediately very clear that the sliders affected the mesh head very differently to the classic avatar mesh. The Bento mesh head I chose was already quite refined and sculpted, so my classic avatar shape with its narrow face, and strong bones, when worn with the head, resulted in a face resembling a Disney witch - eww. It was very apparent that I would have to pretty much rebuild my face. A lot of experimentation then ensued as I played with all (yes all) the sliders, on every tab that related to my avatars head. I deliberately let myself play initially, to learn how each slider affected the mesh, and to get a feel for what was and was not possible. For instance, my classic avatar's eyes are upturned at the outer corners and I found I had little or no ability to do this on the mesh head, so had to find other ways of trying to recreate my

signature eye shape. I felt it was to add a little more strength and important to feel comfortable and definition to my jaw, as the jaw on confident with how the sliders the mesh head was too shallow for affected the mesh before I really me. I also increased my Upper started working on rebuilding my Bridge slider number on my nose to shape, and this paid off as I ended compensate for a very 'dished' look up using slider combinations, and in the mesh head, I also went a little slider numbers which were very squarer on the jaw using Head different from how I shaped my face Shape, again to cancel out the very originally. elfin refinement of the mesh head. These were just a few of the Some slider moves almost felt things I did, the whole process was contra-logical. For instance I have a very comprehensive and things small and narrow but distinct cupids changed as I changed other sliders, bow to my lip in my classic avatar, so it was a complex interplay of and my surprise the best changes. approximation to that in the Bento was made by widening the cupids All the time I was modifying my bow. This process reads as if it happened This is where I found that carefully in one sitting. It didn't. My original chosen makeup helped to re-find attempt at 'me' bore a passing my eye look. Eventually I had appliers that looking with fresh eyes the helped finish out my original following day. branded look. It is frustrating at the moment that makeup cannot be I am still making very tiny layered on mesh heads, as layering adjustments as I 'learn' my new face 2, 3 or sometimes more eye in comparison to my old. I also had to learn how to apply One final tweak was in the eyebrow appliers, and the joys of finding shape. The new head skin came decent hair base appliers that work with a fairly similar eyebrow to my with my head (the ones that came original look, but it sat too high and as default did not include the right was a little ‘surprised’. I also spent a lot of yes, Bento hands :) KM money in the process of achieving my look and I don’t think I could have achieved the results I did without biting that particular bullet. I am very impressed with the technical skill that has gone into making Bento heads, and I look forward to seeing whatever future developments come in time. Now

Our readers, I had the pleasure and honor to be trusted to do the first official interview of MR SL 2017, Colt Jonstone. As he came to my office, I became nostalgic. It was a year ago that I took the same path he did, though I had to leave the competition before completion, I've done a lot more since then. Things that have led me to Kultivate and the Edge. Knowing this, and watching him throughout the competition. I know he will go far as well. Let us begin.. Mr. Stavaros Gracemount: How does it feel to have reached the end, but also win it? Colt Jonstone: Well it feels really wonderful and still a bit unbelievable. I really was not thinking I could win this pageant, even if Ii did my best to be close to it

Mr. Stavaros Gracemount nods, "Well I think that it was the appeal for many that you were not the "typical candidate". I have to ask, how was the journey from beginning to end? Also, now that you have reached that end, what do you plan to do with it? Colt Jonstone: The journey was amazing to me. Taught me a lot about my modeling skills and my creativity. At the start it was difficult because I had poor confidence in myself. I almost quit the pageant after the first challenge. I am not a quitter and so I told myself to do this with more fun and less stress, so I did. Now that it is over I have to admit that I would love to do challenges again and again! I miss it, but I am sure that there will be many great things waiting for me, even if I have no clue what it will be! I just open my arms and wait for what would come.

Mr. Stavaros Gracemount: Why did Mr. Stavaros Gracemount: you think you wouldn't win it? Colt Jonstone: because my avatar Speaking of that. People talk as we is not really in the "normal" model all know and something was brought to my attention about you sizes and shapes. I am very today. That you sing. Rather well I different from all the other might add. You are unique in your candidates. It had been 4 years that song choice, at least the one that I I hadn't done any modeling heard. What I inspires you to do

so?

project I want to do.

Colt Jonstone: omg really? News travels fast! Well yes in real life I sing. I am a Tenor in a Jazz and Swing choir. There are 80 singers male and female. I love to sing especially in this choir because it liberates me from all the stress I can have inside me and also it's a passion. So that's why I sing jazz songs, it is my favorite style of music.

Mr. Stavaros Gracemount: Well now that you are MR SL 2017 there are going to be a lot of people supporting you. There are also others that will envy you. What is this image that you want to cultivate through your role as MR SL and how would you go about making sure those that envy you come to at least understand you?

Mr. Stavaros Gracemount: Speaking of stress, I know you said you almost quit and you picked up and decided to pursue the title of MR SL. What motivated you throughout and who was your greatest support throughout the experience and why? Colt Jonstone: Hmmm good question. As I said I am not a quitter. What I wanted most of all is to prove to myself that I was able to do well compared to accomplished models, like Adonis and Bedizone. I never did this pageant to win it. Just to have another personal challenge. So its why I continued. Only for myself. I had a lot of support from my closest friends, especially from my ex husband Sandro Gilbert. He was and still is supportive in every

Colt Jonstone: I know that I can't please everybody with the way I look, style or because they don't know me. I am 41 years old in RL and so I have experienced this in life. I won't try to please everyone and I will keep being who I am, no matter what. People that know me well will tell you that I am a nice guy always open to speak to anyone or to help as much as I can. I won't change because of that title. Never ! I have no big ambition and I will not walk on anyone's head to have what I want. This is not me! Instead I will use this year to help anyone who would like a helping hand from me. Mr. Stavaros Gracemount: Well said... Now, this being I am sure one of a string of interviews you will KULTIVATE MAGAZINE-

to know that you will be socially engaged for the next year to the Miss SL Organization and it being under the title of MR SL 2017? Colt Jonstone: Well it's a bit scary, only because I have yet no clue about what I will be asked to do in Miss SL organization ! If everything goes as good and as well as it was in the Mr. SL pageant then I will be the happy. Meeting a nice team and I can't wait to know them better. Saian keeps in contact with me, so it is nice. Now I'll wait and see.

I think and I have another look on SL. But inside us and beside our age, we are kind of the same. Generosity and support is also a big part of me. I really care for the people that are counting on me and I am like a Lion when it comes to defend my SL family. I hope that the Miss SL team will accept me as a member of the family now :)

Mr. Stavaros Gracemount: Speaking of family, the organization is close. Some may feel intimidated by this and think that it's not something they will be Mr. Stavaros Gracemount: able to do in the coming year. Speaking of Saian, I competed What do you have to say to those against him myself last year. I am that would think of competing in still in awe of the inspiration he's MR SL 2018? been to other men wanting to do Colt Jonstone: Oh well I want to the same as you and he have tell them go, go gooooooooooo do achieved. He's been wholly it! This will be such a fun journey supportive of those in the for you if you are coming with a organization and has been pure and true heart. You don't need generous with his time. What to have a competitor's soul to make would you do to distinguish this pageant, the only thing you yourself from the first MR SL? need is confidence in yourself. You Colt Jonstone: Saian and I are will never regret it, because the different already by the age. I someone that claims to be as calm appreciate your time Colt and I as can be. In closing. I'd like to wish you the best as well as offer thank you on behalf of Kultivate my support in the year to come." for taking the time to be a part of Colt Jonstone: Ty Stavaros :) KM this interview. I wanted to be able to congratulate someone that I saw throughout his experience not just spread his wings, but learn to soar. If there is a message that you can get across to our reading audience what would it be? Colt Jonstone: First of all, I want to thank you Stavaros for this interview and your kind words of support. This is amazing that I am the support I have received in such a short time from so many people. Their support is makes me feel like I really deserve this title. For my last words I would like to say, thank you. To all my friends showing me their support, to all the people I don't know but have sent me their congratulations, to the Miss SL team for their amazing work during the pageant and their generosity, to all the judges that have entrusted me enough to give me the title, and finally to Marcus who has trusted me from the beginning.
