Welcome to the June 2017 Issue of Kultivate Magazine! You have to love technical difficulties which delayed this issue, but we hope you find it is worth the wait! This issue features 2D and 3D artist Slatan Dryke , four photo essays by Amy Beebe, Ilyra Chardin, Falbala Fairey, and Paradox Messmer, a trip to the La Vie Sim, two great articles on exhibitions by Inara Pey, and a feature on RP Fantasy, and a great article by Eleseren that features haute roleplay couture.

John has crafted this magazine into a beacon showcase for the creative arts in Second Life, through his vision and dedication and his reaching out to all the massively talented people who have become our contributors. This is a new role for me and I look forward to assisting him continue to grow this publication we are so proud of. I will continue to lead the Edge section of the magazine but it is very exciting for me to be given the chance to take on more areas of responsibility, and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Slatan Dryke has been around the Second Life art scene for a long time. He is an artist who can create both 2D and 3D art . I was able to sit down with Slatan to discuss art and his latest projects‌

Open from Monday, May 29th through until Monday, July 31st, 2017 at Split Screen’s temporary home*, is Giovanna Cerise’s newest installation, Flash Back / Flash Forward. This is a complex piece, rooted in both the artist’s own perceptions of creativity and in the notion – or perhaps that should be the temporal nature – of time as we generally tend to perceive it.

The core of the installation is a large, fractured structure. This seems to rise in multi-faceted tiers into the sky, but contains only a single level, reached via teleport – the large daisy at the base of the structure and a short walk from the landing point. This level is divided into disparate rooms and corridors to present something of a maze in which none of the spaces are connected to its neighbors but must be reached by passing through the walls themselves. within some of



the spaces can be found certain artefacts – a suitcase and oversized key, an easel, a hat and rose, images – which we are left to interpret for ourselves. There is no set root through these spaces, although a list of SLurls those containing objects is supplied in the descriptive note card. Instead, visitors are encouraged to wander. In doing so, moving through the room and along the corridors becomes something of an optical experience. Scenes flicker in and out of our perception, colors flick and change – white, red, white – perspectives shift; self-awareness fluctuates as our avatars flips through different states. sometimes solid, other times an outline reflecting the shapes and images contained within walls, sometimes a shadow. It’s a slightly confusing, perhaps disconcerting effect, heightened by the longer one walks through the installation, as images and coolers and outlines flicker in and out of

It is a space into which the past can intrude via memories which flicker, appear, vanish or even morph from point to point as our present is influenced by mood, desire, understanding, and so on. And always, the shifting nature of our present foreshadows what is yet to be, but never allows us to experience it until “the future” is our “present”.

Flash Back / Flash Forward is an examination of time at both the micro and the macro levels. On the micro, is an attempt to encapsulate the artist’s relationship with her work, from initial concept through development, to its completion, as seen trough the lens of time. The artist can only exist in the present, thus the development of a piece of art becomes an exercise in reflection and projection: the initial idea is reflected in the mirror of construction, which serves to project the work into the future, to its final state. This is a fascinating, intriguing installation, one which may require a careful reading of the supplied nots to fully grasp, but which is nevertheless beautifully executed. I happened upon La Vie by chance and it seems so appropriate to cover this region for the June issue of Kultivate. La Vie is the French term for Life. In June I will be celebrating a major milestone birthday in RL and 10 years in SL which has led to much contemplation about my life in both realms. La Vie, created by Krys Vita, is a lovely scenic island with sandy beaches and plenty of locations dotted about to sit, cuddle, or pose for photos. It seemed to me that a lot of thought and care taken into the creation of this region. There are so many areas to hang out with friends or loved ones and there are other areas where you can be alone with your thoughts. There are beach chairs and hammocks along the shoreline where you can watch the waves wash over the sand and listen to the







the gulls flying overhead. There are two completely furnished houses and an artist’s atelier with outdoor and indoor furnishings. Every time I visited there were people about using the different properties, sitting on the rooftop decks or the patios, or just enjoying the sim. Many were posing and taking photos. When you land at La Vie you are asked if you want to join the La Vie group and given the address for the Flickr group. Take time to explore the area, float overhead on the balloon bed or lie on the raft sitting in the calm bay, head over to the pier and enjoy a sunset. Dream about your future; Reflect upon your past. Solo Arte, the open-air gallery space for art and culture designed by TerryGold, and originally operating as the Melania Gallery, has a new home in Second Life. To mark its reopening, it is featuring a dual display of 2D art and sculptures by Terrygold and Mistero Hifeng respectively.

As Solo Arte occupies a portion of a region, some viewers may not automatically adopt the parcel windlight – Breakwave Building Light (if installed). The gallery notes also recommend enabling Advanced Lighting Model (ALM) and Shadows (both via Preferences > Graphics. To be honest, while enabling shadows does add depth to the outdoors elements of the venue (obviously), foregoing them on the grounds of system performance should not unduly detract from a visit (although I would recommend having ALM enabled). Similarly, if you do not have the recommended windlight available in your viewer, this also shouldn’t detract from a visit. The exhibition will run through until the end of June, 2017. KM

As you may know, I am a champion of ‘home grown’ Second Life inspired creativity, whether that be in Art or Fashion. I was inspired to write this article by something that has really been under my nose for some time, the use of role play inspired pieces in ‘mainstream’ fashion styling in SL. This is really more a stream of thought piece rather than anything madly researched, but hopefully it is thought provoking. Like many models I miss the ‘good old days’ of very creative fashion clothing, items that were dramatic, daring, high impact, even fabulously artistic. I miss the outstanding talents of Eshi Otawara, Mea Culpa, Violator, Angels & Demons, Miamai

BlackLabel to name but a few. Yes most of it was sculpt and did not move with the body, creating problems when photographing and walking a runway and forcing us to accept prim breaks and clashes that would be unacceptable now, but wow those pieces looked amazing. They also often came apart in chunks and could be mixed and matched and strapped onto other designs giving us an almost endless range of possibilities as Stylists. Those designs PROVOKED creativity in us, the only limits were our individual talents and vision.
