Nine years! In Second Life, nine years is an eternity and for over nine years I’ve called Avilion my home. It’s the one constant in SL that I can rely on. Avilion is a medieval fantasy role-play community created in 2006 by Serenity Sieyes and Malakh Giles which is frozen in a time between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The creators are no longer active in SL so the sims are run by a group of long time residents known as Administrators. Back in 2008 I was about a year old and still wandering around SL trying to see what I wanted to get out of this game when I TP’d to Avilion and all of a sudden heard someone reading a story in voice. A beautiful white wolf named Caz Lobo was reading a tale about dragons (Eragon if I remember). It was magical! Some medieval sims are heavy into

role-play with specific rules for conversation and group roles. Avilion has a gentler take on role-play. You won’t need an “observer tag” to walk around the sims and explore. One is still encouraged to converse without using modern vernacular and to take on a character that suits you. You must dress in modest medieval attire! Free outfits are at the arrival area and this rule is strictly enforced. When you arrive in Avilion you’ll land at the Quartermaster’s area which has information about the rules of the community (the charter), the different groups, schedule of events for the day, information on upcoming events, and contact information for the different administrators and group leads. Each character and combat group has a group lead who can answer your questions.

Avilion Nexus is the combat area for the Knights, Rangers, Magi, Druids and the mysterious Rogues

Avilion has an online calendar which lists all the events, classes, group meetings, and opportunities to participate and be an active member of the community. All new visitors are encouraged to attend as many classes and events as possible to find out what interests them the most before they choose their path. We always advise before you join the Avilion community to take your time before choosing your character

because it’s not always easy to change. I also studied and fought to become a Knight in the community. The gypsies are one of the groups that entertain, tell stories, read fortunes, create social gatherings and initiate some roleplay scenarios (fondly remembers the time I had to be bathed in garlic for a cleansing). Some of the other groups are Dragons, Quende Elven), Drow, Hatchies (tiny dragons), Fae, Pixies and Mer. When I joined the community I chose to remain a human which meant I would never be allowed to fly (only Creatures, Dragons or Fae can fly) or wear a pair of beautiful wings. As a human I was able to join the proud gypsies of Avilion (all gypsies have to be human) and

Unfortunately, circumstances necessitated that I resign from my Knighthood later that year but it was a truly wonderful experience. HOPE AFTER HARVEY: A FUNDRAISER PRESENTED BY MODELS GIVING BACK IN SECOND LIFE

Hurricane Harvey made landfall around 11:00pm EDT on August 25, 2017 between Port Aransas and Port O’Connor, Texas as a category 4. Harvey is the strongest hurricane to impact Texas since 1961 and the first category 4 storm to make landfall in the United States since Hurricane Charley in 2004. (Source: U.S. Department of Energy) Rockport and Fulton were hardest by the storm as they took a direct hit from Harvey’s eyewall. Many structures, residences, and business in and near the Rockport and Fulton area were damaged or destroyed, as roofs were blown off and walls collapsed. Electricity and water services were lost. The city’s infrastructure was crippled. Significant structural damage also occurred in numerous other coastal town including Port Lavaca, Copano Village, Aransas Pass, Port Aransasand Ingleside. You can see more damage photos in the Photos section. Tens of thousands of South Texas residents and businesses lost power for days, with the hardest hit areas likely losing power for several

weeks. Although there was a significant number of trees, fences and power poles down or damaged in the Corpus Christi Metropolitan area, structural damage was much more isolated. The storm surge from Harvey brought dramatically increased water and tide levels over the Texas Coast. The highest maximum storm tides were observed at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge, where the storm surge levels were more than 12 feet above ground level. Storm surge in Port Lavaca was also more than 10 feet and at least 6 feet in Port Aransas. Elsewhere across South Texas, storm tide levels were from near 3 to 6 feet above ground level at Seadrift, Port O’Connor, Holiday Beach, Copano Bay, Port Aransas, and Bob Hall Pier. Besides wind and storm surge, hurricanes and tropical storms are notorious for producing torrential rainfall and flash flooding. Unfortunately, Harvey was unique. Instead of moving inland and farther away from the coast, Harvey

stalled over South and Southeast Texas for days, producing catastrophic devastating and deadly flash and river flooding. Southeast Texas took the brunt of the heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving more than 40 inches of rain in less than 48 hours! Cedar Bayou in Houston received a storm total of 51.88 inches of rainfall which is a new North American record. However, South Texas residents were not spared from this impact from Harvey, as heavy rainfall and flash flooding were observed over the eastern portions of the area.

unfortunately many other residents will take a long time to recover from this historic and unusual tropical system. Models Giving Back is holding a fundraiser to help those affected by Harvey. De*cid*u*ous is a full region designed by Trip (TrippingDaisy) and landscaped by his partner, Tate (Tate Ghost). It needs only one word to describe it: enchanting. Sitting under a Windlight suggestive of an early morning, when the Sun’s rays cause a gentle ground mist to rise of the dew gathered on grass and leaf, De*cid*u*ous is a mix of stunning landscaping and personal expression on love, life, relationships and the passage of time given in words of prose and poetry – and it is a place deserving of careful and thorough exploration as there really is a lot to see. “What if a virtual land could represent a real life?” Trip asks those arriving at the landing point in the north-west corner of the region, before he continues with an invitation: “Take a journey with me. Enjoy the meticulous landscaping designed by my partner, Tate. Stand in line at my heart to witness the fate of some.” And

thus we’re off on a journey, following paths and trail, crossing bridges, exploring settings and passing through caves and caverns. Along the way – most notably in the caverns and tunnels connecting them, but elsewhere as well – are easels visitors are invited to touch. Doing so will offer up a note card with a passage or poem intended to complement the scene where it is found. Collectively, the shape moments from a life – happiness, love, melancholy, regret, anger, freedom – and all should be read as a part of any deeper journey through the land. Beyond, the path winds through trees, forking before an ancient ruin, one arm leading to a Romany camp between ruins and water, where restful times can be had.

The other arm of the path points the way onwards to a second bridge, joined on the far side of the channel it spans by wooden boards marching over the grass to where they also fork. Turn left, and the way leads to Trip’s heart, as mentioned in the welcoming note card, and another poem of life and reflection. Continue onwards from the path to the heart, and the trail leads to a clearing and another choice: left and out to where a Ferris wheel sits in the light of the rising Sun, or onwards to where the entrance to the caverns awaits.

From the top of the hill, and the cottages sitting on it, the way back down to the lowlands takes the form of a switchback path – but do check around the slopes of the rocky crown carefully, lest you miss the fort built into its southern face and the cozy hideaway it offers. From the foot of the path down the side of the hill, it is possible to continue onwards and discover the remaining secrets of the region and the various places for contemplation and quiet company it offers.

SECOND LIFE SAVILE ROW ARTICLE: STAV GRACEMOUNT THE EDGE SEPTEMBER 2017 STYLISTS

SECOND LIFE SAVILE ROW

ARTICLE: & PHOTOGRAPHY: ELESEREN BRIANNA

I thought it was long overdue in the Edge section of the magazine to write an article for our stylish gentlemen readers (and perhaps their wives and girlfriends who buy for them..). With the growth of mesh in Second Life and the increased availably of quality menswear, the suit for men has really come into its own. This iconic form of male clothing always struggled to look convincing in the pre-mesh era, though designers did their best within the technical constraints SL set them. Mesh has led to a boom in realistic suits and a number of designers now offer a wealth of options to the discerning male avatar. For this reason I thought I would do a piece on tailoring, where I can hopefully provide some interesting information on real life tailoring, and feature the recognized and famous epitome of real life tailoring – the Savile Row suit. I also asked three of our Edge Models and Stylists to present suit stylings with a creative Second Life style twist.

Suits evolved out of the

gentleman’s dress of the 17th and 18th centuries, where gradually clothing for men evolved into jackets, waistcoats, breeches, and shirts, finished at the neck with tied cravats. These were in effect the beginnings of the suit, though it evolved and became more recognizable to modern eyes during the 19th century (when long trousers took over from knee breeches for instance). During the later part of the 19th century suit styles, from tails, to tuxedos, to business suits become something almost identical to the styles men wear today, though fashion and mechanized construction developments after the second world war added a modern dash. First off let me tell you a little about the three broad styles - or ‘cuts’ - of men’s suits that exist today, American, Italian and British. They all have their own little style signatures. American cut suits developed in the 19th century out of an older French tailoring method called ‘sacque’ - hence where American

suits got the name ‘sack suits’. The style further developed in the 1920s, and has been more or less the same since. American suits are designed to be comfortable and practical. They are looser, a little baggy, and a simpler fit to suit most men’s shapes as they were mainly mass produced (‘off the peg’). Shoulders were completely unpadded until modern times when this changed to include light padding. Armholes are cut high for free arm movement and sleeves are looser. Pockets are straight across (not slanted) and have a ‘flap’ of fabric over them. There is little shaping in the jacket, no pleats in the pants, there a single vent (opening) at the bottom hem of the back of the jacket. The suits are usually made in lightweight fabrics and are generally single breasted with 3 buttons and three buttons also finishing the cuffs.

also more likely to be associated with Italian suit tailoring, with Armani perhaps the most well known. Italian suits are lightweight and cut slim and very fitted to hug tight to the body and both pants and jackets are slightly shorter than American or British cut suits. Jackets are the classic ‘V’ shape, with unstructured but wide shoulders and cut very snug around the hips. Pants are cut with no pleats and are narrow and tighter in the leg. Jackets are usually single breasted with no vent at the back and usually feature a single large button to close and a higher and wider V notch to the lapels. Jacket pocket openings have no flaps but are finished neatly a with ‘jetted’ border of fabric around them.

Of all the suit cuts, the British one is considered the most ‘traditional’ and formal, and it is the one with the most complex and sophisticated Italian cut suits developed later tailoring. It evolved during the 19th than British or American, with many century, and Queen Victoria’s son, design details added in the 1950s Edward Prince of Wales was (think ‘Rat Pack’ suits), and they are instrumental in some of the generally considered the most developing styles of suits (he modern and ‘trendy’. opening at the end of the sleeve is closed by fully functioning buttons and buttonholes enabling the sleeve ending to be opened and turned back. Suits will often be made with tailored waistcoats too (the ‘three piece suit’).

The British cut of suits evolved in the London tailoring Mecca of British tailoring uses a more robust Savile Row, a street in the very and heavy 2-ply woven cloth, prestigious Mayfair area, which different from the lighter fabrics has been a center of bespoke used in both American and Italian tailoring for over 200 years. Savile tailoring. Suits are more complex Row tailoring has traditionally only in their construction, with padded been for men, though in the 21st and structured shoulders, stiffer century a few innovative tailors are interlining, and more shaping to making now for women too. the jackets and pants (which looks amazing when bespoke fitted – Bespoke means completely and more on that later). Jackets are a fully made and fitted to measure little longer, with 2 or 3 buttons, for an individual client. This is have flap pockets which can be after creating a pattern for the suit slanted (and even doubled each from scratch made using a side), two vents at the jacket back comprehensive set of the (one over each buttock) and customers measurements (rather tighter sleeves with a higher arm like a designer dressmaker does hole. Pants are higher waisted and for women). It is more developed have a couple of pleats at the top even than ‘made to measure’ for a more comfortable fit. Fully where perhaps some of a clients bespoke English cut suits can even body measurements are used to have ‘surgeons cuffs’ where the alter a standard existing pattern

existing pattern before the suit is made, with perhaps an optional fitting during the suit making. Bespoke is of a completely higher level. A bespoke suit can literally be made and fitted perfectly to any shaped body or any body issue, something made to measure can only partially do. A bespoke suit is made from a unique pattern made specifically for that customer, in cloth chosen by that customer, and fittings take place throughout the suit making process. Bespoke suits also have a very high degree of hand sewing and finishing in them, though some use of machine sewing is now allowed, in deference to modern times. Of course in Second Life it is highly unusual for custom mesh to be made for one unique avatar, and mesh conforms naturally (within certain limitations) to the avatar’s body, following rigging points to the avatar ‘bones’. It is therefore impossible really to have truly ‘bespoke’ suits in Second Life. It is however possible though to find suits which are styled resembling the various cuts, including British/

Savile Row styles. Many suits in Second Life are styled after the ‘trendier’ and more modern Italian cut, but I have included here images of suits from Deadwool, Lapointe & Bastchild, and Hoorenbeek which evoke for me the British Savile Row look (though feel free to differ in your opinion on this). This is Second Life, and I am a champion of ‘Second Life Style’ where we can think out of the box and add our own ‘SL Style’ creative twists to real life fashion inspirations. I have asked the three Edge Stylists and Models pictured here to take the suit they are wearing for a ‘walk on the wild side’ to show that while a suit can make a man look fabulous when worn in the traditional way, something amazing can happen too when a little imagination and creativity is applied to the styling. Gentlemen you look spiffing! KM All images for this article were shot in New Babbage, Second Life.
