WE DON’T INHERIT EARTH FROM OUR ANCESTORS, WE BORROW IT FROM OUR CHILDREN.

American Native Proverb

The state of camping in North America today invites reflection on our collective responsibility to safeguard the beautiful landscapes we love exploring. As we venture into the great outdoors, “leaveno-trace” practices become paramount, reminding us to leave nature as we found it and minimize our environmental footprint. Sustainability should serve as our guiding principle, encouraging us to choose camping equipment designed to last rather than being seduced by wasteful, disposable options. By adopting this mindset, we can forge a path towards mindful enjoyment of our precious outdoors, that inspire both us and future generations.

Our Story

GROWN FROM THE CANADIAN ROCKY MOUNTAINS

Inspired by many trips to Jasper, AB. Canada, in the summer of 2013 Rob had the idea of creating an all new outdoor furniture company, based in Edmonton, AB.

The brand was changed to ‘Kuma® Outdoor Gear’ to fit more to the vision of what our customers desired.

2014 2015 2016

Our first official Kuma catalog was printed. It was only 26 pages!

2017 2018

Development of the ‘Grizzly Outdoor Gear’ brand began with the formalization of a business plan and a connection with two other investors.

Our first order was shipped to the USA.

Kuma® introduces tents and propane products into our core product line.

Our Values

We treat our staff, our partners and our customers with respect and fairness.

Trust is the essence of good business and the way we earn and maintain our customer base.

Integrity · Trust

The creation of Kuma® Outdoor Gear was inspired in one of the most beautiful places in the world... Jasper, Alberta Canada. Located amid the snow-capped Canadian Rocky Mountains this alpine town is the commercial centre of Jasper National Park. The park is filled with vast glacier-fed lakes, forests and rivers. A town rich in history rooted in early exploration, from fur trading to the construction of the mountainside Cross Canada Railways, this majestic land continues to inspire people to explore. From our many hiking, biking, skiing and camping trips we began the journey 10 years ago in 2014 to create products that would encourage others to experience nature’s beauty, just like we experience in Jasper.

10 Years 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023

We strive for maximum quality, durability and integrity in all products we build.

We are committed to advancing the boundaries of innovation in our gear.

Our goal is to make getting outside with your loved ones fun and enjoyable.

A Step On The Road to

Sustainability

Kuma is always developing products while keeping our environmental impact in mind. It has become essential, intentional and calculated. This program is our first major step towards continuing our product lifecycle and giving purpose to gear that has reached its end of life.

At Kuma Outdoor Gear, we’ve always believed that we could do more in our sustainability journey by finding innovative ways to reduce waste. Through our “Fix It Don’t Replace It” program, we had taken a step in the right direction, but now we are excited to take that next step to reduce our waste impact. That’s why we’re proud to present our latest initiative: The Re-Discover Project.

In collaboration with Earth Warrior, we’ve embarked on an exciting journey of re-purposing and rediscovering the potential in items that have reached their end of life. With Katrina’s help, we’ve created sewing patterns that allow us to efficiently and effectively re-purpose returned goods, such as chairs, tents and pet products. We’re giving them a new life and “Re-Discovering” how we can continue the circulation of these would-be discarded materials. Our goal is “nothing goes to waste!” Every component of the original item has to have a purpose and a plan. From the straps and buckles to the fabric and stuffing, we utilize every piece recreating “new” items that our Kuma Kommunity can enjoy and use again.

The Re-Discover Program would not be here if it weren’t for Katrina from Earth Warrior, so we would like to take this opportunity to share her point of view so you, our Kuma Kommunity, can learn a little more about our process and the goals for this project!

How did Earth Warrior start?

I started Earth Warrior in 2018 with the goal to reduce textile waste and single use plastic waste. But the journey to getting to creating Earth Warrior started way before 2018. Growing up I spent countless hours outdoors connecting with nature and picking up garbage and planting trees every spring with my family. I also spent a lot of time sewing and designing clothes, so I went to college for Fashion Design. After working in the industry for multiple years, I was very disheartened by the amount of waste created in manufacturing clothing. I stepped away from fashion and textiles and worked on an organic produce farm where I learned how everything on the farm was circular and contributed to the natural space around the farm. This inspired me to step back into fashion and textiles to create a circular system through fashion. I started playing with old worn out jeans and sweaters to create tote bags and items I was making to reduce waste, I decided to re-brand to Earth Warrior and pursue helping individuals and businesses reduce waste.

How did you and the Kuma team connect?

I met Rob from Kuma over a beer at a mutual friend’s holiday party. I wasn’t even going to go as I was enjoying ice cream and the warmth of my bed, but something inside told me to go out

12 kuma outdoor gear

and be social. I introduced myself to Rob and shared how I was an up-cycler and textile recycler. Rob mentioned how he and his team were recently at a conference in Kimberly, BC called KORE and were inspired there to start an up-cycling line for Kuma, but were looking for someone locally with expertise in the area of textile recycling and up-cycling. Since then we have been collaborating together to create the Re-Discover Program in the Edmonton area with plans to expand to other markets as well.

Can you explain why it is important for you to help businesses like Kuma to start programs like the Re-Discover program?

Creating initiatives like the Re-Discover Program with businesses like Kuma hold immense importance in the fight against environmental degradation. These programs embody a commitment to responsible consumption and waste reduction, addressing critical issues such as textile waste and the environmental impact of a throw away society. Programs like Re-Discover represent a crucial shift towards a circular economy, emphasizing the importance of reusing, recycling, and up-cycling. By encouraging customers to return used items, Kuma is not only reducing the demand for new production of new textiles for some of their products but also minimizing the carbon footprint associated textile manufacturing.

‘‘

Such programs foster a sense of responsibility and mindfulness among consumers. They encourage individuals to view their purchases as part of a larger life cycle, promoting a more sustainable and conscious approach. Engaging in programs such as the Re-Discover Program enables both businesses and consumers to collaboratively contribute to conserving Earth’s resources and preserving our natural ecosystems. Here at Earth Warrior we see the Re-Discover Program as a beacon of hope in an industry that has often prioritized profit over sustainability. It reflects a commitment to harmonizing human activities with the natural world, ultimately paving the way for a more regenerative and Earth-friendly future.

Programs like Re-Discover represent a crucial shift towards a circular economy ‘‘

Kuma is currently selling the upcycled bags and log carriers made from their warrantied and damaged chairs and gazebos/tents. But it is just the fabric being used for these items. Where do the rest of the parts of the gear go?

The chair fabrics are all being utilized from the outer fabric to the stuffing in the rediscover project and we are keeping the smaller hardware aside for possible future projects with Kuma. For the larger hardware, like tent poles and chair frames, we have been recycling all of these with General Recycling Industries in Edmonton Alberta. We are making sure all the parts are being recirculated to minimize waste and to contribute to a circular economy.

For people who are interested in reducing their own textile waste but may be unsure where to start, what steps would you recommend for them to incorporate into their daily routines?

For anyone interested in minimizing their textile waste but uncertain about where to begin, the first steps involve adopting mindful practices in daily routines. Start by embracing the concept of “reduce, reuse, repair and then recycle.” Consider making informed choices when purchasing outdoor gear, favoring timeless and versatile pieces over industry trends. Extend the life of your outdoor gear, or clothing through proper care, repairs, and creative up-cycling. Donate or responsibly dispose of items you no longer need. Explore sustainable alternatives like second-hand shopping or supporting Eco-friendly brands, or brands taking steps towards a circular future. Small, intentional changes in your purchasing habits can collectively make a significant positive impact on reducing textile waste.

HOW TO’S

HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS ON MAXIMIZING COMFORT DURING YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE

Venturing into the great outdoors can be unpredictable at times but to those that spend lots of time outside, unpredictable weather is all part of the thrill. You know the saying, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.”, well at Kuma Outdoor Gear, we’re all about making sure you’re just as comfy in the wild as you are on your couch! That’s why our crew of outdoor enthusiasts got together to share their favorite tips so your next adventure is a seamless blend of warmth, dryness, and bug-free bliss.

How To Stay Warm:

1. Layer Up - Wear insulating layers, including a base layer, fleece, and a waterproof outer shell.

2. Invest in a Quality Sleeping Bag - Choose a sleeping bag with the right temperature rating for the conditions.

3. Bring a Heated Camping Chair - Elevate comfort by packing a heated camping chair for cozy evenings around the campfire.

4. Stay Dry - Wet clothing reduces insulation; stay dry to retain body heat.

5. Bring a Portable Heat Source: Good, dry firewood may be hard to find. Bring along a portable propane fire pit like our Bear Blaze Fire Bowl.

How To Stay Dry:

1. Invest in Quality Rain Gear - Pack a reliable waterproof jacket, pants, and boots to stay dry in wet conditions.

2. Waterproof Your Shelter - Seam-seal or use a rain fly to ensure your tent is water-resistant.

3. Elevate Your Sleeping Area - Choose a higher ground for your tent to avoid potential flooding.

4. Pack Dry Bags - Keep essentials in waterproof bags to protect gear from unexpected downpours.

5. Check Weather Forecast - Stay informed and plan your trip during periods of minimal precipitation for a drier experience.

How To Stay Bug Free:

1. Wear Protective Clothing - Opt for long sleeves, pants, and socks to minimize exposed skin.

2. Choose Bug Repellent - Apply an effective insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin.

3. Set Up a Bug-Free Zone - Use mesh screens or bug nets for tents and sleeping areas and bring along your Bear Den Gazebo and Keep It Cool Shelter for an extra bug free space to enjoy.

4. Camp Away from Standing Water - Bugs breed near water; camp away from stagnant pools or marshy areas.

5. Timing Matters - Plan activities during peak daylight hours; mosquitoes are less active in the sun.

Camping’s For The Dogs

According to a survey from Go RVing, 68% of RVers are accompanied by pets, with dogs being the favored companions for 92% of travelers. More and more campgrounds are adding or building on existing features that cater to animals and especially dogs. But let’s dig deeper into why this trend is skyrocketing and why we’re not just camping with our dogs – we’re unleashing a whole new level of outdoor adventures with our furry best friends.

For us, it’s not just about the statistics; it’s about that crackling campfire, the aroma of marshmallows in the air, and the infectious excitement of our dogs when they get to share these moments with us. Camping becomes more than a statistic; it transforms into a shared journey of tails wagging, paws exploring, and memories being made under the starlit sky. So, what’s the real deal behind our love for camping with our dogs? Grab your Bear Buddy Chair for you and your pup to share, settle in, and let’s unravel the reasons why camping with our four-legged companions is an adventure like no other.

24 kuma outdoor gear
Backtrack Leash and Collar - Orange/Brown

One of the biggest things we love about outdoor adventures with our dogs is seeing them in the wild as they become furry explorers on a mission. From sniffing out new scents to exploring the woods with you, their natural instincts take the lead. You can’t help but love the way they navigate fallen logs or discover the wonders of a bubbling creek. The wilderness becomes their playground, and you’re right there beside them, reveling in the freedom that comes with every paw print on the trail.

Camping also allows us to take a short timeout from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, cutting out all of the distractions. No buzzing phones, no traffic noise – just the sounds of nature and the occasional bark of a fellow camper’s dog. It’s a chance to slow down, take in the fresh air, and let your furry friend remind you that life is meant to be enjoyed in the moment. Whether you’re sharing a cozy tent or curled up inside your RV, camping with your dog is like hitting pause on the craziness and hitting play on the simple joys of being together. And after a full day spent outside enjoying the fresh air, you’ll both be tired guaranteeing a restful sleep!

Dogs also provide a sense of companionship when solocamping or camping with a small group in more remote locations. When the only sounds are the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of wildlife, the presence of our dogs becomes more than just comforting; it’s a reminder that we’re not alone in our adventure. Their watchful eyes and ever-alert ears add an extra layer of security, allowing us to fully embrace the solitude of nature as we hike, swim, explore the area or are sitting by the campfire.

In the end, camping with our dogs isn’t just a thing we do; it’s like hitting pause on real life and diving into a world of fur, fun, and outdoor shenanigans. Whether we’re navigating the wild or just chilling in our Bear Buddy Chairs with our favourite adventure buddies, the magic is in those shared moments.

BRIEF HISTORY OF CAMPING

IT IS SAID, THE FOUNDER OF MODERN RECREATIONAL CAMPING WAS THOMAS HIRAM HOLDING, WHERE AS A BOY IN 1853 HE CROSSED THE PRAIRIES OF THE UNITED STATES IN A WAGON TRAIN, COVERING SOME 1,900 KM WITH A GROUP OF 300.

Did you know?

A group of famous American businessmen known as The Vagabonds: Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John Burroughs, and Harvey S. Firestone , traveled for ten years to different states where “...these rough and tumble pioneers would drive toward the Adirondacks and essentially live off the land, camping at farms and buying food along the way just like ordinary Americans out for a holiday on the road.

TIMELINE

1853

Thomas Hiram Holding set to cross the prairies of the United States in a series of wagons traveling 1,900 KM with a large group of 300 people.

1861

The first Boys Camp was created by Frederick William Gunn and his wife at Milford-on-theSound for students of the Gunnery School for Boys in Washington, Connecticut. Its success was immediate and was repeated for 18 successive years.

1888

The first Girls Camp was created by Luther Halsey Gulick and his wife on the Thames River in Connecticut.

1901

Thomas Holding formed the first ever camping club, the “Association of Cycle Campers”.

1910

Boy Scouts of America was formed by Ernest Thompson Seton, it incorporated camping as a major part of its program. Similar emphasis on camping was to be found in the Girl Guides founded in Great Britain at the same time.

1932

The “International Federation of Camping Clubs” was founded, with national clubs from many countries affiliating with it.

1960’s

Camping had become an established family holiday standard, and campsites were widespread across North America.

2019-2022

The camping and outdoor industry boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, people spent more time together outdoors due to social distancing restrictions indoors.

Built with our

Bear Hands

Building a multi-national business from scratch takes dedication, experience and a little inspiration. Take a walk in the journey of how it all started.

Robin Gomme, General Manager of Kuma Outdoor Gear, believes that everyone should be able to enjoy the beauty of nature, but he knows that for many, comfort is a big hurdle. That’s why Kuma Outdoor Gear offers something different to outdoor enthusiasts of all experience levels and ages. Our collection of outdoor luxury outdoor furniture, tents, sleeping bags, pet products, drinkware, and accessories are durable, dependable, and comfortable.

Rob started Kuma, which means “bear” in Japanese, in 2014 in Jasper, Alberta. One of the most unique aspects about this outdoor gear disruptor is that they operate their own marketing, product development, and distribution. This allows them to have full control over their brand story and creative process. Rob’s experience in global marketing over the past 25 years allows him to showcase the products through their stories to grab attention and build connections.

Kuma partners with companies whose values align with their own. These “kollaborators” are like minded brands working with Kuma to create complementary products and events which makes for unique outdoor experiences. (See page 45)Prioritizing values of integrity, trust, innovation, quality, and passion permeate everything Kuma does.

We sat down with Rob to learn more about what Kuma has to offer and where its inspiration comes from.

What inspired you to start Kuma?

I grew up around Jasper, Alberta, in the snow-capped Canadian Rockies, and have always been passionate about the outdoors. Jasper is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s full of wildlife, forests, glacier-fed lakes, and rivers, and the town has a rich history. We started Kuma to inspire people to comfortably experience the kind of tranquility and beauty you’ll find while in Jasper. I put a lot of what I believe in into the company and its story. Personally, I believe people want to connect with a story and through that story, feel associated with a brand. Kuma is a brand people love to feel a part of. That’s a huge differentiator.

Who are Kuma’s products for?

Our products are for people that want to be just as comfortable outdoors as they are indoors. Our Kuma Kommunity loves to spend time outdoors with their friends, family and more often than not, they bring along their pets as well! We want our products to encourage people to spend more time enjoying the outdoors. Our gazebos make it easier to enjoy a meal outdoors without having

30 kuma outdoor gear

to worry about the elements or bugs. Our heated chairs can make those chilly nights around a campfire a little more comfortable. Our Kozy Bear Chair allows you to keep your drinks close with it’s built-in cooler. Our Galaxy Lights can be used as string lights inside or outside your tent or RV. Whatever outdoor adventure our Kuma Kommunity is on, we have gear for that!

What are some of the items that Kuma makes, that you most excited about?

We’ve built one of the market’s industry leading heated camping chairs, the Switchback Heated Chair which is the world’s first heated chair with Bluetooth ® Technology. I used to work in the ski industry and took the technology from the heated ski boot and integrated it into our chair. Controlled with our free Kuma Heated App, people can preheat and micro-adjust the temperature on their chair to their preference. I feel that embracing the way people will be using technology outdoors will inspire the next generation of camping.

Chairs are our specialty, but our process starts at the campfire and works outward. Our products are designed with top quality materials and the features and benefits our customers expect. We pay close attention to what other companies are doing, or rather, what they’re not doing, like integrating technology into camping gear. People desire innovation intersecting with ease and comfort. A lot of camping companies use traditional product colours, but we believe in breaking the mold. For example, I saw a Corvette in sage green and grey on the road, and that inspired last year’s colour for our newest product collection.

Rob Gomme
‘‘
I have the opportunity to create disruption in the industry and alter the idea of what people think camping should be.

How has your background influenced what you do at Kuma?

For 25 years, I worked with sports companies like Ripcurl and Elan Skis. Through them, I gained a lot of knowledge on branding awareness and product design. I own two businesses that work within the action sports community on the promotional side, doing their point of purchase materials, branding, and more. I’ve also done sales and product design for Woods Canada, which was bought by Canadian Tire.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The freedom to create. I don’t have a desk; I’m always on the road in a van visiting distributors and retailers. In the current business landscape, an owner can be more accessible than ever before both virtually and in person, which is inspiring. In my role, I have the opportunity to create disruption in the industry and alter the idea of what people think camping should be.

KUMA DRINKWARE FAQ’S

Q: Is this drinkware dishwasher safe?

A: You bet it is! For ease of clean-up, our drinkware can be cleaned using your dishwasher. Simply remove the lids and caps and wash separately, before placing them in the dishwasher.

Q: Can you buy separate lids for the coozies to use them as mugs too?

A: Yes you can, and we encourage it! Mix up a cocktail, toss in a soup for the day (see Pg. 42), or take your favorite juice, soda or water with you wherever you need it. The lock tight seal will keep your liquid goodness all contained.

Q: What other products have optional lids??

A: We offer an optional slider lid with a magnetic closure for the travel mug. This lid allows for easy closure in travel and easy cleaning once your done your day.

Q: What cans fit in what coozie?

A: Tall Can Coozie - Fits a 473ml or 16 oz tall can. Can Coozie - Fits a 355ml or 12 oz regular can. 3 in 1 Coozie - Fits a standard 355ml or 12oz beer bottle, a 355ml or 12 oz regular can, or 355ml or 12oz tall skinny can.

Q: How long will your water bottles keep a cold drink cold?

A: There are several variables that determine results in maintaining coldness in our drinkware. One,what product are you using? Two, how cold is the beverage before it goes in the container? Three, what is the temperature outside where you are using it? With all these variables, you may experience varied results. Typically with our double walled stainless steel drinkware with fully closeable lids, you should see a minimum of 6-8 hours before significant ice melt. Our Bomber Bottle and Rope Water Bottle will be the most efficient at keeping liquid cold.

Q: How long will your coffee tumbler keep a warm drink warm?

A: Again, several variables come into play with results regarding warm liquid regulation but it’s fair to say, in ideal conditions it’s about 5-7 hours before you’ll notice significant cooling in your beverage.

Q: Are your products BPA Free?

A: Yes, all of our lids and containers are BPA free.

Temagami Region, Ontario Canada

“This region in Ontario on the Canadian shield is a great place to plan a canoe trip. Lots of the lakes have crystal clear water that you can straight to the bottom. One of my favourite places to camp is on Lake Maskinoge where I spent some time as a kid or McConnell Bay on Lake Chiniguchi. McConnell Bay has a wicked beach that is shallow for a long way out, perfect for playing in the water. The campsite is massive with lots of options. Lake Temagami is also a great place to paddle for a couple of days due to its sheer size and endless bays to explore. It also has a couple of houseboats that frequent the lake as well.” - Mike, Sales Representative

McCubbins Gulch - Mt. Hood Recreational Forest, USA

A rustic campground with shady sites, many of which are adjacent to a creek. Picnic tables are available as well as a vault toilet. This campground and day use area is within the McCubbins Gulch OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) designated trail system area. Campers are likely to hear and see OHV enthusiasts during their stay. Located at

the edge of the national forest. “With a combination of 120 miles of single track and quad trails, it’s great for dirt biking and quadding! Awesome and secluded and close to the Portland, OR area.” -Jad & Art - Sales Representatives

Flathead Lake, Montana, USA

“Close enough to enjoy Glacier National Park on a day trip but away from the crowds, Flathead Lake has been one of my favourite places to visit over and over again. The lake is incredibly clear and perfect for paddle boarding with many campgrounds to choose

from in the area. Spend the day driving around the lake stopping at some of our family’s favourites like Flathead Lake Cheese Factory in Polson, Garden Bar in Big Fork, and Blacktail Mountain Books (a used bookstore you can get lost in!) in Kalispell.” - Deanne, Marketing and Social Media Manager

Cape Lazo RV Park - Comox, BC Canada

“My family stayed at a great little site in Comox a couple of years ago that is run by a young family that rejuvenated the place. It was an amazing spot, steps away from the ocean. Very clean and well maintained with a great little retail shop, kids play area, outdoor cooking area, and a handful or super friendly people who live there full time.” See capelazo.com - Chris, Sales Representative

Shunda Creek/Kootenay Plains Reserve, AB Canada

“I enjoy camping in the Nordegg area because the scenery is gorgeous! There are falls, canyons, lakes and rivers to visit in the surrounding area, while getting a nice view of the mountains. There is also a good amount of hiking in the area, the paths range from easier trails with boardwalks to harder mountainous trails for the more advanced.” - Samantha, Customer Service

Anticosti Island - Sépaq at Baie De La Tour, QC Canada

Sépaq features over 6,300 campsites with employees committed to providing a positive and exciting natural experience. You’ll set up your tent or park your RV on sites developed with great respect for the environment. Peaceful wooded spaces, where you’ll enjoy fun-

The Art of a Killer Campsite

Camping trips can be stressful to plan and pack for. We’ve compiled a list of our Top 10 Tips to help ease the anxiety of planning and setting up your next campsite.

Camping is a beloved outdoor activity that allows us to disconnect from the chaos of everyday life and immerse ourselves in nature. One of the key elements of a successful camping trip is selecting and setting up the best campsite. The right campsite can make all the difference in terms of comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment of the experience. We’ve compiled a list of the Top 10 Tips for selecting and setting up the best campsite, ensuring a memorable and hassle-free camping adventure.

1. Research and Plan Ahead

Before embarking on your camping trip, take the time to research and plan ahead. Look for campgrounds or camping areas that suit your preferences and needs. Consider factors such as proximity to amenities, hiking trails, and scenic views. Planning ahead will help you make an informed decision and secure a spot at your desired location.

2. Consider the Season and Weather

The season and weather conditions play a crucial role in selecting the best campsite. If you’re camping during the summer, look for shaded areas to escape the heat. In cooler months, choose a campsite that offers protection from wind and has access to sunlight. Be aware of any potential weather hazards and check your local forcast before you leave.

3. Evaluate the Terrain

When selecting a campsite, evaluate the terrain to ensure a comfortable and level surface for pitching your tent or parking your RV. Avoid areas with rocks, roots, or uneven ground that could disrupt your sleep or pose a tripping hazard. Look for a flat area that is free from debris and provides a solid foundation for your camping setup.

4. Check for Water Sources

Access to clean water is essential for any camping trip. Look for campsites that are near a water source, such as a river, lake, or campground tap. Having easy access to water will make cooking, cleaning, and staying hydrated much more convenient.

36 kuma outdoor gear

5. Consider Privacy

If you value privacy during your camping experience, choose a campsite that offers seclusion. Look for sites that are tucked away from high-traffic areas and offer natural barriers, such as trees or shrubs, to create a sense of privacy. This will allow you to fully immerse yourself in nature and enjoy a peaceful camping experience.

6. Check for Fire Safety

Fire safety is paramount when camping. Before setting up your campsite, ensure that there are designated fire pits or fire rings available. Clear any flammable debris from the surrounding area and follow all fire safety guidelines. Remember to never leave a fire unattended and always fully extinguish it before going to bed each night or leaving the campsite.

7. Assess Accessibility

Consider the accessibility of the campsite, especially if you have specific needs or mobility restrictions. Look for campsites that are easily accessible and have amenities such as accessible restrooms or paved pathways. This will ensure that everyone in your camping group can enjoy the experience comfortably.

8. Mind the Wildlife

When selecting a campsite, be mindful of the local wildlife. Avoid areas with signs of recent animal activity, such as tracks or droppings. Keep your campsite clean and secure food in bear-resistant containers or hang it from a tree to prevent attracting wildlife. Respecting the natural habitat of wildlife is crucial for their safety and your own.

9. Leave No Trace

As responsible campers, it is our duty to leave no trace. Choose a campsite that aligns with the principles of Leave No Trace, which include packing out all trash, minimizing campfire impacts, and respecting wildlife. Leave the campsite as you found it, or even better, by picking up any litter you find.

10. Test Your Setup

Before settling in, test your camping setup to ensure everything is in working order. Pitch your tent, set up your cooking area, and check that all equipment is functioning properly. This will save you time and frustration later on and allow you to make any necessary adjustments before fully settling into your campsite.

Selecting and setting up the best campsite is essential for a successful camping trip. By researching and planning ahead, considering factors such as weather, terrain, and accessibility, and following principles of Leave No Trace, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable camping experience. Remember, the right campsite sets the stage for a fantastic adventure in the great outdoors.

FRENCH TOAST STICKS

Ingredients Preparation

French Toast

1 loaf brioche Texas toast (stale, or toasted)

1 cup milk

⅓ cup sugar

3 eggs

1 tbsp cinnamon

2 tsp salt

¼ cup butter

1 lb bacon

1 cup fresh strawberries

Maple Cream Cheese Dip ½ cup cream cheese

¼ cup powdered sugar

6-8 tbsp dark maple syrup (start with 6, taste and add more if needed for thickness and flavor)

1. Start the bacon in a cast-iron pan on the camp stove. Low and slow is the trick to perfectly cooked bacon. Flip once, and remove when it looks cooked slightly less than you want, it will continue cooking from the residual heat once removed from the pan.

2. Prep the egg mixture by combining the milk, sugar, eggs, cinnamon and salt.

3. Whisk until evenly incorporated and no egg streaks remain.

4. Slice the bread into strips (thirds) before dipping. The bread works best if it is a little stale (leave the bag open overnight) or lightly toasted.

5. Remove the bacon from the pan and leaving some of the grease behind, dip pieces of the bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides, then place into the pan.

6. Flip once golden brown, and continue to crisp all four sides of the slices adding a little butter between batches to make sure the bottom of the pan stays coated.

7. While the french toast sticks are cooking, prep the maple cream cheese dip by combining the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and maple syrup using a fork to press all of the cream cheese down, then whisk until smooth.

KUMA KITCHEN 40 kuma outdoor gear

KUMA KITCHEN

PIZZA POCKETS Ingredients Preparation

Pizza Dough

3 cups flour (00 is best, but AP will work)

1 cup warm water

1 tbsp instant yeast

1 tbsp sugar (or honey)

2 tsp salt

2 tbsp olive oil

Filling

Tomato sauce

Mozzarella

Pepperoni

Red onion

Dried or fresh basil

Quick Tips

1. For the dough, combine warm water, yeast and honey, flour and salt in a large bowl and mix together until a shaggy dough has formed.

2. Add in the 2 tbsp of olive oil and continue to knead for about 8 minutes until a smooth tacky ball is formed. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and proof until doubled in size (about 2 hours).

3. Once proofed, remove from the bowl and cut into 6-8 pieces (about 100g each) and roll out into circles about 6” in diameter.

4. Fill the centers with your favourite toppings and fold the dough over top, pinching to seal all edges. (This forms a half circle, like a mini calzone).

5. Brush the outside with olive oil (both sides) or oil your cast iron pan. Place them in a pre-heated cast iron pan (medium heat) and cover with a lid, cooking for about 4-5 minutes on each side until nice and golden brown.

1. For camping you can make the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it. After proofing, wrap tightly in plastic wrap or a Ziploc bag (as one mass, or divided into the eight pieces).

2. Before rolling out, let it come up to room temperature.

3. To make it last even better for camping, freeze the dough, and then store in your cooler.

4. If making the dough while camping, leave the covered bowl in a nice sunny spot while it proofs.

5. This can be cooked over a fire, or on a portable propane stove.

COOZIE SOUP

Ingredients Preparation

Soup Base (per serving)

500mL water

2 tsp kombu dashi

1 tbsp white miso paste

1 tbsp light soy sauce

2 tsp sesame oil

1-2 tsp chili garlic sauce

2 tsp grated ginger

Soup Components

Firm tofu

Bok choy sprouts

Carrots

Enoki mushrooms

Vermicelli noodles

Bean sprouts

Green onions

Note

1. You want approx 400-500mL per serving of soup.

2. While waiting for the water to boil, prep all of the other ingredients. Grating the ginger, cubing the tofu (about 100g per serving of soup), slice the bottoms off of the bok choy sprouts (if using baby bok choy, slice vertically as well). Julienne the carrots, slice the mushrooms, wash bean sprouts, and finely chop the green onions.

3. Into the bottom of a Kuma Coozie or thermos, add all of the soup base components. Add the kombu dashi, white miso, light soy sauce, sesame oil, chili garlic sauce, and grated ginger.

4. Fill the coozie with all of the veggies (harder veggies), tofu and mushrooms on the bottom to ensure they remain fully submerged. Add a bundle of vermicelli noodles, squished down into the coozie, then any remaining ingredients like the green onions and bean sprouts.

5. Once the water is boiling, pour directly into the coozie, filling to about 1 cm from the brim. Screw the lid on tightly and give everything a shake to blend the broth, and disperse all of the components.

6. Let it remain closed with the lid on for 4-5 minutes. Remove lid, mix, and eat while hot.

This recipe is intended to be vegetarian, which is why it uses kombu dashi. However, you can easily sub in chicken bouillon for the dashi, and shredded chicken for the protein.

SALTED CARAMEL BROWNIES Ingredients Preparation

Brownies

¾ cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

½ cup unsalted butter

½ cup cocoa powder

½ cup white sugar

½ cup brown sugar

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla extract

½ cup chopped walnuts

½ cup semi-sweet

chocolate chips

Non-stick cooking spray

Salted Caramel

1 cup white sugar

⅜ cup unsalted butter (just under half a cup, about 6 tbsp)

½ cup whipping cream

2-3 tsp salt

1. Melt the butter. Once melted, add the white and brown sugar to it and mix until evenly incorporated. Add in the vanilla and eggs, whisk until incorporated.

2. Combine all other dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt, cocoa powder), and then fold into the brownie mixture. Mix until no dry streaks of flour remain.

3. Grease a cast iron pan (very well) and pour the brownie batter into it and spread it evenly sprinkling the top with chocolate chips and/or chopped walnuts. Cover with a tight fitting lid or tinfoil and place over a low campfire. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Check at 20 by sticking a toothpick in. If when you take the toothpick out it has wet better, it needs to cook longer. Be very careful with the heat, this is a low and slow situation. If you have too high of heat, the bottom of the brownies will scorch by the time the rest of the brownie cooks through.

4. While they bake, place a small fire safe saucepan on a section of low to medium-low heat on the fire, and pour in 1 cup of white sugar.

5. Once it starts to brown around the edges, start to whisk. The sugar will initially be lumpy but as it melts down and you continue whisking off and on it will eventually melt into a wonderful caramel colour liquid. Have patience and continue to whisk, it will take 8-10 minutes. Careful not to let it burn, moving the pot around as you need to adjust where it is on the fire.

6. As soon as all of the sugar is melted, add in the butter, in 1 tbsp pieces. Immediately start stirring to incorporate the butter, but be aware that it will start bubbling like crazy! Nothing is wrong, just keep whisking rapidly to incorporate it.

7. As soon as the butter has completely incorporated remove from heat, add in the salt, and very slowly whisk in the whipping cream. Again, it is going to bubble rapidly and seem like it is not going to combine, but it will, go slowly and keep whisking. As soon as it is fully incorporated and silky smooth, set aside and let it cool. It thickens up a lot as it cools. To speed up the process, pour into a jar instead of leaving it in the hot pot.

8. Once the brownies are finished baking, drizzle with caramel and enjoy!

1 2 3

Wash Things Safely

We advise against just tossing your cozy sleeping bags right in the washer without reading the instructions! Some sleeping bags require hand washing or front-load washing only. For example, our sleeping bags prefer to be washed in cold water, delicate cycle, using a mild detergent, and a front-loading washing machine is ideal. Best to always hang dry too!

Keep Everything Dry

Whether it’s your Tekarra Camp Tent or your Bear Den Gazebo, make sure it’s completely dry before you put it in storage. If you forget, you’ll start to smell the problem before next year! Mildew is a serious risk for tents and other tarps that are stored wet for too long. If you do notice an odor, you can lightly spray your gear with distilled white vinegar - which should help kill the mold.

Use Waterproofing Spray

Before filling up your camp bins, make sure you re-apply a waterproof coating to everything that needs it. Like your summer rain jacket or the Keep It Cool Shelter. Waterproofing the outside of your tents make them more durable and helps to maintain the life of the gear, for years to come. After you’ve sprayed everything, make sure to let it dry fully before rolling it up and storing it away.

4

Repair Any Holes Or Tears

To make the most out of your camping gear, make sure to repair any damage before you roll it up and start using it again. To repair any damage to your tent, air mattress, or camping chairs, you can use a wide variety of tools. You’ll find fabric repair kits, tape, and repair patches, at your local camping supplies store.

5 6

Remove Batteries & Stray Items

Remove all batteries from your Heated Chairs, lanterns and headlamps. Check your tent and sleeping bags for lost socks, clothing, and other things that you may have missed. They’re prone to eat them, the same way your washer does!

Fold It Correctly

How often have you wrangled with a tent while putting it back in its bag? Always make sure you’re folding your camp gear correctly. That way, it won’t wear out as fast and it’ll fit in the bag more easily.

PRE-SEASON TIPS

RESEARCH A DESTINATION

Many campsites will open their summer reservation list between January and March. While it may still be cold where you are, it’s important to look ahead of time if you want to secure some popular spots. Start browsing road trips through states, provinces and parks that you would like to visit, making a note of the different camping options and their amenities. Start compiling a wish list of your top destinations!

NOTE RESERVATION OPENINGS

Campsite reservations and permits can fill fast, especially for holiday weekends. Note when reservations become available in your calendar so you can be the first to nab your ideal camping spot. Getting dates planned this far in advance can be tricky, especially when you’re going with others. Check the cancellation policy before making reservations, just in case.

ASSESS YOUR GEAR

Every year, your camping gear goes through quite a bit of wear and tear. The best way to asses your gear is to pretend you’re going on a camping trip! Unfold and pitch your tent to look for holes or see if it needs waterproofing. Or, turn on your RV generator and ensure all the lights, outlets, and appliances are working correctly. Inflate your sleeping pads and air mattresses and see if there are any noticeable leaks. Test lamps and flashlights to see if they need new batteries.

CHECK EXPIRATION DATES

When it comes to your first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and products such as sunscreen and bug spray, you want to ensure they’re all still good for the year.

Leave No Trace

“YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT” – THE MORE EFFORT WE INVEST IN PRESERVING NATURE, THE MORE REWARDING OUR CAMPING EXPERIENCES BECOME.

Camping is a wonderful way to connect with nature and escape the stresses of everyday life. However, with this privilege comes a responsibility to leave no trace and ensure that we are caring for the environment that we are enjoying.

One of the fundamental principles of leaving no trace while camping is to be sure what you bring with you, leaves with you or is disposed of when you leave. Like what your parents have always told you... “Clean up after yourself”. When we venture into nature, it is crucial to leave the campsite as we found it, or even better. This means picking up any trash or litter, properly disposing of waste, and leaving the area pristine for the next campers. By taking the time to clean up after ourselves, we not only show respect for our ecological surroundings but also ensure that future generations can enjoy the same natural beauty that we experienced.

Caring for the environment goes beyond just cleaning up after ourselves. It involves being mindful of our actions and their impact on nature. This includes using biodegradable products, minimizing our use of disposable products, and being conscious of our carbon footprint. By adopting sustainable practices while camping, such as using reusable water bottles, reducing single-use plastics, recycling, and conserving energy, we can minimize our impact on the environment and preserve the natural ecosystems that we love.

The saying “you get what you put into it” holds true when it comes to camping. The more effort we put into caring for the environment, the more rewarding our camping experience becomes. When we take the time to appreciate and respect nature, we are rewarded

with breathtaking landscapes, encounters with wildlife, and a sense of tranquility that cannot be replicated elsewhere. By investing in the well-being of the outdoors, we create a positive feedback loop where nature thrives, and we, in turn, reap the benefits.

Camping is such a joy-filled journey into the heart of nature, but it comes with role of preserving it and leaving it undisturbed. By cleaning up after ourselves, being mindful of our actions, and adopting sustainable practices, we can ensure that future generations can enjoy the same natural beauty that we do. And let’s not forget the importance of recycling in preserving our natural surroundings.

Remember, “you get what you put into it” – the more effort we invest in preserving what we have now, the more rewarding our camping experiences will become. So, the next time you embark on a camping adventure, give Mother-Nature a high five, leave no trace and let’s all do our part. Happy camping!

Bamboo is a great alternative raw material, found in abundance. It truly comes to the planet’s rescue in the age of climate change and deforestation. A renewable resource with a relatively fast growth rate makes it a hands-down winner in the area of wood product sustainability.
