The 2017 ACUI Region II Conference is rapidly approaching, and we are so excited to share with you all that we have in store. The Conference Planning Team has been working hard to show you all that Region II has to offer. In this special edition of the newsletter we have complied all the information you need to prepare for the conference. From preconference opportunities to speakers to auction items, we have it all. AskinosIe Chocolate Factory Tour Departs: 10 a.m. (transportation provided) | Price: $10 These tours offers a behind-the-scenes look into the details of what it takes to craft exceptional chocolate, enjoyed by fans across the globe. This informative tour will take you around the factory, allowing you a peek inside the secretive world of chocolate making. They will also provide a concise education on how they make their bean-to-bar chocolate, including their ingredients and the type of equipment utilized. They also discuss their direct trade practices, their community involvement, Chocolate University, and even delve deep into each of their origins. Don’t fret, because they provide plenty of tasty samples of their chocolate at various stages of the process throughout the tour. Tours lasts approximately 45 minutes and you are welcome to shop afterwards with your 10% tour discount. Notice: There are strong magnets in the factory, which could affect a pacemaker, defibrillator, etc. Learn more: https://www.askinosie.com/learn/tour-our-factory.html Cardinal Stadium Tour (12:30 p.m.) Departs: 12:30 p.m. (transportation provided) | Price: $10 The Springfield Cardinals are the Double-A Texas league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. They play at Hammons Field, which is located downtown Springfield. This field is also home to Missouri State University’s baseball team. The stadium seats 8,000 with 28 luxury suites, five party desks, and an indoor training facility for both teams. Enjoy a walking tour of this incredible stadium and see where both the MSU Bears and the Springfield Cardinals play. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE KEYNOTE AND ACUI TALKS SPEAKERS We are excited to offer a great lineup of keynote speakers for the conference! Friday, November 3, Keynote Clifton "Clif" M. Smart III Clifton “Clif” M. Smart III has served as the 11th president of Missouri State University since June 27, 2011. Missouri State University has demonstrated significant progress under Smart’s leadership. The university has set new enrollment records each year, increasing total enrollment by more than 2,000 students. Missouri State has also increased the number of underrepresented students by 33% and the number of international students by 18%. Missouri State has implemented fifteen new degree programs, two of which are doctorate programs. The university has achieved a Silver STARS rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education and constructed or extensively renovated more than a dozen major campus facilities. Smart is committed to college affordability. Under his leadership, the university has raised tuition by less than the amount of inflation, meaning it is less expensive to attend Missouri State now than when Smart first became president. Smart is known throughout campus and the state of Missouri for his collaborative leadership and strong relationships with students, faculty and staff. Having lived in Missouri for more than two decades, Smart maintains strong ties with leaders throughout the state and is actively engaged in the local community. Saturday, November 4, ACUI Talks We are excited to welcome three speakers to be part of the ACUI Talks. Dr. John Taylor John Taylor serves as chief executive officer for ACUI. With more than thirty years in higher education, Taylor has worked in college unions across the United States, including at Missouri State University where he served as assistant dean of students & director of the Plaster Student Union. In 2005 Taylor became director of university unions at the University of Michigan. Prior to being hired as CEO in 2015, he was actively involved with ACUI as a volunteer. He is passionate about the role of the college union, and the importance of our work to positively affect student success.
Taylor has a bachelor’s degree in history from Rutgers University, a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs administration from the University of Vermont, and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Missouri. His dissertation examined successful leadership practices of senior student affairs officers, and he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on leadership foundations. Taylor has been married for 28 years to his wife Michelle, and they have four kids - Nicole who recently graduated from college and is now in the Peace Corps, Hannah and Jacob who are in college, and Matthew who is in high school. Ashley Yong Ashley Yong is the CEO and founder of Give A Box, a nonprofit organization dedicated to packing and distributing boxes of food, clothes and supplies to homeless people across the nation. She started Give A Box as a senior in high school when she ditched her prom to create 20 care packages for the Chicago homeless. She has given a TEDx Talk about her experience and has been featured in the Huffington Post, The Chicago Tribune and a documentary titled, "What You Do Matters." A junior at the University of Missouri, she is majoring in journalism with an emphasis in strategic communication with minors in business and hospitality management. She is the vice president of the Student Unions Programming Board, president of Asian Christian Fellowship and a member of the Outreach Student Recruitment Team. Yong has attended two ACUI conferences and it was at the 2016 ACUI Region II Conference where she decided that she wanted to pursue a graduate degree in student affairs. She also designed the 2017 ACUI Region II conference logo. Paige Oxendine Paige Oxendine is the program coordinator at The eFactory, where she manages programming, client relations, and communications for the tech-focused entrepreneurship center. Oxendine is also a co-founder of Rosie, an initiative formed in late 2016 aimed to better support female founders, business owners and leaders in the Springfield region. Paige is a graduate of Missouri State University where she earned degrees in socio-political communication and public relations and also served as Student Body President.
Sunday, November 5, Keynote Francine Pratt Francine Pratt serves as the Prosper Springfield director of the Prosper Springfield Initiative, a Springfield community collective impact model, charged with reducing poverty by 5% and increasing postsecondary to 60% by 2025. She is co-owner of Pratt Consultants with a focus on community engagement, business infrastructure development and conflict resolution, strategic planning and diversity training (including bias-based police training). Pratt is an accomplished project/program director with more than 25 years experience in leading government, private, public, and non-profit organizations with a focus on developing community client sustainability, customer service and family support work in the public and private sectors. She’s had extensive responsibility for local and statewide operations while consistently delivering organizational improvements and strategies that enhanced community engagement and program performance. Her past positions demanded proven program management experience, exceptional leadership skills, and problem resolution expertise.

GATHER YOUR GRAPHICS. Graphics Competition: Steal this Idea! Participate in this year’s graphics competition by bringing your best work to the regional conference. Student and professional graphic designers working in college unions are encouraged to submit. Competition Rules: 1. Graphics entries must be dated between November 3, 2016 and November 3, 2017. 2. Entries must be submitted on site during check in by Friday, November 3, 2017 at 5 p.m. 3. Submissions can be student, staff, or team designed. 4. Work should be presented in a professional manner (i.e. no wrinkled shirts, posters mounted, etc.). 5. Each submission must have an information tag attached through the duration of the display. a. Information tags will be available on site at the conference for participants to fill out. 6. Submissions entered in incorrect categories may be moved at the discretion of the conference planning team. 7. Winning selections will be selected by a set of judges and announced at the closing brunch on November 5. Submissions may be picked up at the end of the conference. Items not picked up within an hour past the conclusion of the conference will be discarded. Categories for Submission
• Brochures: Bi-fold or tri-fold brochures eligible. Includes information about offices, programs, etc. • Calendars/schedules: multi or single page • Digital campaigns: website, social media, etc. Must print a display of the campaign. • Logo/brand identity: printed copies of logos/branding materials • Miscellaneous: Items such as window displays, decorations, giveaways, etc. - Submissions can be made in a form of a printed picture or by bringing in the promotional item. • Multi-page publications: magazines, annual reports, etc. • Posters: 11x17 or smaller • Promotional campaigns: includes several items for promotion of the same thing - Needs to be displayed all together such as on poster board. • T-shirt/item of clothing: Must be displayed on a poster board.

PACK YOUR DOLLAR STORE AND AUCTION ITEMS Show Me the Money: Silent & Live Auction and Dollar Store Looking for a way to give back to region II? Consider donating any swag items to our Dollar Store or any items to our Live or Silent Auction! Money earned from the Dollar Store, Live and Silent Auction is allocated to scholarships, future conferences, and leadership opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Items for the silent and live auctions can include gift baskets, gift cards, jewelry, electronics, and more! For the Dollar Store, grab those extra swag items from your office! Not able to donate items but still want to contribute? This year our region will have a button campaign, bring any lose change to donate and you will receive an ACUI button showing your support! Missouri State University is located one block south of the hotel. The walk to the Plaster Student Union from the hotel is about 15 minutes. FLYING: The Springfield Branson Airport has four airlines: American, Delta, United, and Allegiant. Take advantage of the free airport shuttle from the University Plaza Hotel (6 a.m.–11 p.m. daily).
