2017 Annual Report THE BIG EVENT April 8, 2017

2,370 KU students, faculty and staff members volunteered at 305 locations across the Lawrence community during the eighth annual The Big Event at KU. At homes, schools, community agencies, public parks, churches, and downtown businesses, representatives from the KU community said “thank you” to their neighbors in Lawrence. Raking leaves, painting fences, cleaning garages, and completing other small tasks is our way of showing our appreciation and giving back to the town that has supported University of Kansas students for over 150 years.

MISSION The Big Event functions to unite all facets of the Universtiy community: students, faculty, and staff, in a single day of service for all members of the Lawrence community. Through this service, The Big Event strives to also be a contributor in students’ educational experience through the promotion of service learning not only for all student volunteers but also the 12 student leaders that plan and execute the event.

What a wonderful service you young people provide the Lawrence Community. I really have benefited from all the help your people provided, completing tasks I can no longer accomplish. The group that helped me was a really friendly group that I enjoyed getting to know. Thank you! - Margaret, repeat job site owner

By providing more information about homeowners to the KU students sent to serve them, a greater sense of community was formed. - Campus Outreach leaders introduced the new “Litterbugs” program. KU Litterbugs helped to promote the organization while working to clean up the KU campus and other heavily trafficked areas of the Lawrence community. - 55% of job site registrants responded that The Big Event made them feel more connected to the KU community. - Older Lawrencians continued to be the primary group served with 60% of respondents indicating they are between the ages of 65 years old or older. - The Development team added 3 food trucks to the event closing for the first time by inviting local trucks to meet volunteers as they returned.

- Jobsites were spread across Lawrence serving 27 different neighborhoods indicating positive results of continued neighborhood outreach efforts. - According to volunteer survey responses, 61% of volunteers live in campus housing. The Big Event provides a great opportunity for students to strengthen campus connections in both relationships and campus pride. Selected swiper data identified that KU freshman made up 41% of The Big Event volunteers followed by 23% sophmores, 20% juniors, and 13% seniors. While feshman make up the majority of student volunteers, upperclassmen still remain involved during their time at KU. - Of the multiple ways in which volunteers learned about TBE, 42% of survey respondents indicated they heard about it through word of mouth. 74% of respondents heard about TBE through digitial and print media outlets. 15% of volunteers had a class requirement to participate.

“

This organization gives so much back to the amazing community that surrounds us, but I never knew how much of an impact it would be on my life. I now have a broader perspective on community service and what it means to be involved in the community.
