2018 Annual Report THE BIG EVENT April 14, 2018

1,872 KU students, faculty and staff members volunteered at 272 locations across the Lawrence community during the eighth annual The Big Event at KU. At homes, schools, community agencies, public parks, churches, and downtown businesses, representatives from the KU community said “thank you” to their neighbors in Lawrence. Raking leaves, painting fences, cleaning garages, and completing other small tasks is our way of showing our appreciation and giving back to the town that has supported University of Kansas students for over 150 years.

MISSION The Big Event functions to unite all facets of the University community: students, faculty, and staff, in a single day of service open to all members of the Lawrence community. Through this service, The Big Event strives to also be a contributor in students’ educational experience through the promotion of service learning for all student volunteers and the 12 student leaders that dedicate their year to plan and execute the event. The Big Event member, Jacob Hammil, offers tools to a group of volunteers.

2018 ASSESSMENT 225,116 The economic impact generated by the nearly 2,000 volunteers providing 4 hours of service to 272 locations in 2018. The Big Event makes a signficant economic impact within the Lawrence community while operating on an eintirely fundraised budget of $18,333.

63%

of Lawrence community members responded that they strongly agreed that the event helped them feel more connected to the campus and the KU Community.

34%

of KU volunteer respondents that felt that the biggest impact of participation in The Big Event was that they met new people and made new friends. In the multi-selection response, 28% of respondents reported participation enhanced their college experience.

87%

We are in our 80’s and had a big job! We had 7 fantastic, enthusiastic students who helped clean an overgrown area, rebuild a walkway, and spread mulch over a large area in about 2 hours! It was cold but the air was warm as they pitched in and quickly perceived how to tackle to job efficiently. Totally positive experience! Thank you! - 2018 Jobsite manager survey response

2018 ACCOMPLISHMENTS - The Big Event helps students increase connections to their environments. 89% of volunteer survey respondents indicated that participation in The Big Event helped them feel more connected and part of the KU community. 90% of respondents felt more connected to the Lawrence community. - 19% of jobsite managers indicated that this was their first year requesting volunteers. While our primary jobsite base continues to be returning sites, 2017 and 2018 saw new sites registered in neighborhoods with low or no previous participation.

- 70% of jobsite managers report being over the age of 65 while 80% of all respondents identify as female. Survey open response feedback offers an outpouring of gratitude for completing work that had become challenging for aging populations in our community. - The two most selected survey options for how The Big Event impacted volunteers were that they met new people/made new friends (34%) and that it enhanced their college experience (28%). Following those categories, volunteers felt that The Big Event relieved stress and that they learned something new through volunteering.

2019 OPPORTUNITIES Based on self-reported 2018 volunteer survey responses, 29% of volunteers participate in 3-5 service activities a year at KU and 30% participate more than 10 times a year. A high level of service engagement on campus indicates that there are opportunities for growth in The Big Event planning and leadership teams. - 57% of volunteers responded that they registered because their student group was volunteering together. Student org outreach and engagement needs to be a focus for the 2019 planning team.

- 34% of 2018 volunteers self-reported their class standing as Freshman and 14% reported Senior. There is an opportunity for developing The Big Event tradition to level out decreased participation in upper classmen. - With 34% of survey respondents indicating their class standing as Freshman and 38% of respondents indicating they live in Residence Halls, our partnership with KU Housing continues to be important. Improving ease of registration and Residence Hall messaging should remain a continued focus in 2019.
