One big day. One big thanks.

2019 Annual Report THE BIG EVENT April 27, 2019

1,564 KU students, faculty and staff members volunteered at 184 locations across the Lawrence community during the ninth annual The Big Event at KU. At homes, schools, community agencies, public parks, churches, and downtown businesses, representatives from the KU community said “thank you” to their neighbors in Lawrence. Raking leaves, painting fences, cleaning garages, and completing other small tasks is our way of showing our appreciation and giving back to the town that has supported University of Kansas students for over 150 years.

MISSION

The Big Event functions to unite all facets of the University community: students, faculty, and staff, in a single day of service open to all members of the Lawrence community. Through this service, The Big Event strives to also be a contributor in students’ educational experience through the promotion of service learning for all student volunteers and the 12 student leaders that dedicate their year to plan and execute the event. “

My four volunteers were outstanding! My yard was transformnend. They certainly enhanced my life and I’m so grateful. Thank you for organizing this amazing blessing. - 2019 Jobsite Manager

2019 ACCOMPLISHMENTS - The Big Event helps students increase connections to their environments. 89% of volunteer survey respondents indicated that participation in The Big Event helped them feel more connected and part of the KU community. 90% of respondents felt more connected to the Lawrence community. - 22% of jobsite managers indicated that this was their first year requesting volunteers. While our primary jobsite base continues to be returning sites, the past three years saw new sites registered in neighborhoods with low or no previous participation.

- 63% of jobsite managers report being over the age of 65 while 83% of all respondents identify as female. Survey open response feedback offers an outpouring of gratitude for completing work that had become challenging for aging populations in our community. - The three most selected survey options for how volunteering for The Big Event impacted volunteers were that The Big Event supported my connection to the Lawrence community (74%), that it enhanced their college experience (58%) and that they met new people or made new friends (53%). Following those categories, volunteers felt that The Big Event relieved stress and that it fosters a culture of community inclusion, social justice, and equity.

2019 OPPORTUNITIES - Based on self-reported 2019 volunteer survey responses, The Big Event volunteers are volunteering less outside of this event creating opportunity for additional engagement. 20% of 2018 volunteers indicated that they volunteer more than 10 times a year while only 14% responded similarly in 2019. Additionally, 19% of 2019 volunteers indicated that The Big Event was their first time participating in service while at KU. - 78% of volunteers responded that they registered because their student group was volunteering together. Student org outreach and engagement needs to be a focus for the 2020 planning team.

- 62% of 2019 volunteers self-reported their class standing as Freshman or Sophmore and 32% reported Junior or Senior with only 10% of that being seniors. There is an opportunity for developing The Big Event tradition to level out decreased participation in upper classmen. - With 29% of survey respondents indicating their class standing as Freshman and 52% of respondents indicating they live on campus, our partnership with KU Housing continues to be important. Improving ease of registration and Residence Hall messaging should remain a continued focus in 2020.
