01 M.E.P. & STRUCTURE Academic Work

The project was introduced as a class project in the postgraduation degree of building information modeling (BIM) with the primary objective of getting a deeper understanding of Revit in the part of the structure, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing tools. To give an overview of the tools and processes covered in it were structural grids, placing structural columns with the modeling of walls, and footings, creating pier and pilasters, beam systems, bracing, cross bracing, and trusses. In addition to this detail such as reinforcement and rebar setting, adding, and modifying rebar, and reinforcing walls, floors, and slabs were covered as part of the structure.

Moreover, in the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) part of the topic such as the linking of the Revit model, adding duct accessories and fitting, sizing, and tagging ducts, adding zones, heating, and cooling loads, adding insulation, adding mechanical equipment, air terminals, adding supply and return ducts were covered as part of mechanical. For the plumbing topic such as adding fixtures and domestic supply piping, adding sanitary sloping piping, and drains, adding equipment, additional pipes, system, accessory, and tagging were performed. And finally, for electrical, the task was adding receptacles, and panels, creating space, creating a circuit, adding lighting fixtures, adding switches, creating a lighting circuit, creating a switching circuit, tagging the wiring plan, and adding conduit were done.

The overall exposure to the topic helped in gaining a key understanding of structure and MEP and how the different tools can be used with the quantity takeoff and cost of the material. Also, how one can do airflow analysis in ducting and plumbing system itself in the Revit tool, moreover how trap and slope can be given in sanitary service, and the different families which we made and edited for the supply of hot and cold water. Which all helped in producing a feasible option for the respective topic. In addition to this, an understanding of joinery, industry knowledge, and requirements exposure were provided by the faculty.

The project was introduced as a class project in the postgraduation degree of building information modelling (BIM) with the primary objective of getting a deeper understanding of Naviswork, and Revit in the part of the Costing for different classes of budgeting, Estimating a commercial construction project, Scheduling and simulating the construction schedule of a commercial project using BIM software and Create Clash Detection Reports and coordinate the clashes.

. To give an overview of the tools and processes covered in it was a basic understanding of estimation, MasterFormat and UniFormat, In Naviswork how the sets are created, in search, selection sets and quantification in Naviswork with the help of Revit and quantity provided from Naviswork to get an overall idea about the amount of it with the cost as per the industry. Further, scheduling of the whole project from start to finish was performed and linking it with each element in Naviswork which was linked to the schedule of the elements to be constructed on-site, as per the quantity, labour and time required for curing thus getting the 5D BIM goal.

In future projects, I performed clash detection of the building which had architecture, structural and MEP models. Performing visual clash of model and annotating the error and further using clash detection in Naviswork where the clashing model of Architecture with structure, structure with MEP and MEP with architecture on individual levels at the different floor and demarking the error and sorting it according to the error issue and how it can be resolved on-site or there is the requirement for change in the model by coordination with other field people.

The model and schedule showcase the quantity takeoff that is exporting the quantity required for the structure from Naviswork to excel and further scheduling the elements such as foundation, beam, columns and etc. as per the time required for construction of formwork, rebar and concrete as per the Production speed for the task.

It is the clash detection done through Naviswork between the structural and M.E.P. part of the building, it showcases the MEP passing through the structural wall and staircase, which can cause major changes on site.

This provides clash detection between the Architectural and MEP elements of the building, due to this there should be some changes which can be made in advance such as plumbing and mechanical, whereas, some can be executed on-site itself, however a note need to be made for them in advance.

This project is part of the bachelor of architecture degree, and it is the thesis topic. To me, a hospital plays a critical role and understanding its working and designing one for the cause is an inspiration that one can get. The building plays a key role in one health and how it speeds up the process of healing, for hospitals everything plays a critical role, from design, orientation, functioning and coordination between spaces. Gaining knowledge of them and merging them with the creative side make the space more playful. It is designed for the Composite climate of Pune, India (the temperature Is in human comfort throughout the year).

The hospital is located on the highway, as being a specialty hospital of neurology and being sustainable at the same time help in reducing cost and helping people in need during emergencies. The main concept behind the hospital was providing green space which is accessible by everyone at regular intervals thus promoting nature. Also, the radiation caused by radiology services in hospitals can be harmful to patients over time, so to overcome that it was designed to have a thick wall and roof covered by soil on the upper floor, also it acts as a green space in the center of the building connection ground floor to the first floor.

In addition to this, the floor plate of the building is in stepped form thus creating terraces on each level. This helps the patient in getting exposure to the beautiful surroundings and healing under nature, to increase the healing process, a specially designed garden was developed which is connected from the third floor to the ground floor passing through it which improves health and brings fresh air to the patient. Also, all the spaces are connected through bridges on both blocks and help in moving patients from emergency to patient wards, or operations stations without much travel. Moreover, the doctor’s clinic, laboratory, patient ward, radiology and exercise area are connected throughout the structure.

The concept was developed by understanding hospital needs and requirements, and the reason behind that design through case studies. Further developing the form according to the site and surrounding as well as the requirement of each space, which led to the opening from the front and backside. Also changes the orientation and form of the block as per sun moment and wind, moreover, connecting both the block by radiology and reception area in the center.

In addition to that demarcation of the service block and its connectivity throughout the hospital play a critical role in space planning. Also, Providing levels and open spaces throughout the hospital and connecting different levels at various locations. This helps in coming up with the form and overall space design of the hospital which is best suited for patients as well as for the proper functioning of the hospital.

The section showcases the overall space and level of the central reception and radiology area. As it can be seen, access to the garden from three sides and a waiting area on the upper level. In addition to this, the radiology waiting area is as well connected from radiology and acts as a space for patients and visitors to interact with nature. the hospital is provided by walking and vehicular, which led to a double-height reception area which is connected to an open connected to the open area in the center and upper-level plaza. The upper-level plaza plays a key role in reducing the harmful radiation connected through an overpass bridge between different levels.

The Project was designed and developed for the need that was felt throughout the years in the city of Jamnagar, that is to showcase the traditional art and skills which have been done by the community for a long time. The city and nearby town are famous for bandhani traditional cloth art, jewelry and many more, in addition to that, it has biodiversity as many migrating birds travel here. So to come up with a design that supports the biological diversity of animals and birds and promotes local art was of key importance for the design.

Water was part of the community and through interaction with people, got to know that it played a significant role in the people of Jamnagar, however, the development of Lakota lake and its surroundings by the government it leads to further diversification in the community and thus natural ecosystem and water were neglected by the people. Thus this project focuses on “Bringing water and its diverse ecosystem back to the people of Jamnagar and providing a mode of earning for the local community”.

As humans, we have five senses out of which Touch, Hear, See through Eye and Smell play important roles using them to bring people closer together and to nature, which was done by providing ghats throughout the structure and an amphitheatre which changes as per the level of water and can become different space throughout the year. In addition to this water, activities were introduced with more promotion to the local business and providing interaction spaces throughout the complex.

The surrounding area near the site is dense in nature and they have been developed over many decades, however during the redevelopment of the Lakota lake the road which goes to the site was proposed and which helped in connecting the city. And promoting residential spaces in the surrounding.

However, the commercial was not able to develop and thus got neglected in the city, even if have historical importance in the city and further became a dead space in the city. Moreover, the other side of the lake was completely neglected and lost all connectivity with the community and surrounding even, leading to getting polluted throughout the years.

This chart visually highlights the local business which was done on the street or in shops around the Lakota lake, with time distribution that is morning, afternoon and evening also providing information regarding the footfall of the area and how the space interact with the surrounding. As one can see, area 7 was not having any business and thus became the neglected part of the city and developing it played a critical role in the city’s development.

SKETCHES

The design inspiration came from the surrounding, which was flamingo and turtle, as the design was keeping in mind nature and promoting community. According to me blocking the connection of people with the Lakota lake, and the local ecosystem will not bring them together, so the site which is divided by the road in between was developed by raising the building mass from the roadside, but having a slope on the lakeside to promote interaction with nature and community itself and bringing water back to the local people by bringing them close to the water at locations which are accessible from the road.

In addition to this, all the spaces were connected through a ramp linking all four complexes and connecting the space above which plays a critical role in community connections and the columns supporting them are in the Flamingo bird neck.

The section showcases the spaces through the workshop and exhibition center, it also gives an idea regarding spaces and building which faces them with lover height so that it doesn’t overpower them. And the wall on the road curves outside giving new experiences throughout the structure with, a playful experience.
