LIG housing

01

Interactive housing – social mass housing. The site is located in the city of Pune, which has a hot and dry climate. It has a road at the north, LIG housing at the east and a canal at the west. Scope and limitations: 10% of the site to be recreational 15% of the site to be a public use with the road connection. Inclusive housing for 90 tenements to be built. Concept: to create interactive spaces. to get maximum natural light and ventilation. There are total 8 wings which are connected to each other and share the same cores, thus making it a single building. Each wing has one unit on one floor. Central 4 wings are tallest and it tapers to the edge, this is done to get more light and ventilation at the centre.

Proposed public square

Clubhouse with a swimming pool

Basketball court

Childrens play area

Tennis court

SITE PLAN

The basic idea is to separate the staircase services from the floor units. Hence the building doesn’t need a fire escape staircase, the cores are open and get enough light and are not dead but more interactive. The cores are connected to the units with the help of bridges

4 units are connected to one staircase block with the help of bridges. At some levels a slab connects the bridges, this slab is used for recreational purposes, where people can interact(like in villages), children can play. This helps in creating a lively atmosphere.

Instead of having a central core and 4 units attached to each other, here the units are separated from the core to get more natural light and ventilation

Vachanalay – climate responsive library design The site is located in the city of Pune, which has a hot and dry climate. It has a school at the north of the site with wide roads at the east, west and south. Limitations were : load bearing structure with 400sq.m. as the built-up area. The concept behind such a design was the traditional wada architecture in Pune, which has many interesting features like big plinths, inward looking courtyards (central courtyards), waterbodies, sloping manglore tile roofs and use of wooden columns. Features like thick south walls, jali walls, and climatic orientation of the buildings were given importance in wada architecture. Thus the aim was to design the library which is climate responsive with the essence of traditional architecture. The importance in design was given to the quality of spaces in terms of volume, natural light and ventilation, and landscape features.

The orange colored façade faces the south side, hence it receives harsh sunlight and glare, which disturbs the thermal comfort throughout the day, thus to reduce this it is treated with brick jali wall

The blue colored well indicates the courtyard (light well). It has a water body which cools the hot air passing over it. This is a traditional architectural feature of Pune i.e. the WADA ARCHITECTURE.

The red colored façade faces the west side, hence it receives harsh sunlight in the afternoon and also gets maximum amount of the winds, thus it is treated with a brick jali wall, through which the intensity of light reduces and at the same time wind can pass.

The symmetry of the building is maintained with no compromise in the quality of space. Thus making this building monumental.

SITE PLAN

JALI WALL: Jali wall reduces the glare from the south and the west, and illuminates the space enough, not affecting the intensity of light. For the wind, Venturi effect applys here as the principles of physics says that when air is compressed and released, it becomes cool. Thus jali walls helps in cooling the air passing through the small holes.

PLAY AREA : The site had an existing children's play area, so this area is maintained and placed nearer to the school and away from the reading areas to maintain silence in the library.

THE PLANNING: Priority was to maintain the symmetry of the structure in terms of plan and section, the volume and the proportion of the rooms decides the quality of space. The design of the roofs, exposed brick walls, large arched openings, and the symmetry gives this structure a monumental effect

COURTYARD: It is a typical wada planning with a central courtyard with spaces around it, which is suitable in hot and dry climate. All the rooms open to this courtyard making it lively and usable. It has sloping roofs with overhangs to shade the walkways around the central courtyard which is the main circulation

section

SECTION: • The front façade of the building faces south, the canopy provides the necessary shade at the entrance. • The jali wall on this façade helps to cut down the glare and allow wind through it which cools due to venturi effect. • This wind further cools at the water body and the hot air rises up. • The general reading and the stacks are located at north-east to get the perfect light and wind.

Vishnu prabhodan kendra – building material research centre. The site is located in the city of Pune, which has a hot and dry climate. It has the morey(clients) house at west constructed in hollow cement blocks. To the south is an empty plot where community centre had to be designed. Limitations : it was a tight site with dimensions of 10m X12.5m; to compliment the clients house the research centre was to be designed in hollow concrete blocks. The main aim was to design a structure with maximum usable area, hence split staircase system was incorporated. The advantage of projections like balconies, box windows was taken. Community centre consists of a covered seating area people to sit and read, also landscaped areas for the children to play.

The blue colored wall indicates the east façade, where the pleasant morning sunlight falls, thus it has large openings with balconies. Also a separate entry is given at this façade for loading and unloading of materials.

The orange colored wall indicates the south façade, where the harsh light and glare falls, with the winds flowing from south west. Thus small openings are given and big openings are louvered to cut the glare without blocking the winds.

The blue color part has the openings of the Morey house which connects to the wind tower (shown in red),which is a common tower for both the buildings, this tower helps for cross ventilation in both the buildings

SPLIT STAIRCASE SYSTEM: •It has floors on every mid landing. •This system was incorporated to get maximum usable space in the given tight site and limitation in height. •The semipublic and the private spaces were divide using this system . •The staircase is located at the centre and hence acts as a light well.

•The waterbody helps in maintaining the temperature as the climate is hot and dry. •It is located at the south-west as the wind moves from the south-west, thus hot air rises up when wind flows above the waterbody and cools the wind . •Trees are planted above the raised slab to block the glare from the west. •Shaded spaces are designed for people to rest. •Lawn is designed for children to play . •Light columns are used to light up the community centre during the day. •Interesting seating are designed for aesthetic purposes

Kaam setu – multi activity bridge The site is located in the old city of Nasik, where holy rituals take place on the Ghats (banks ) of the river Godavari. A festival KUMBHA MELA bathing festivals takes place here after every 12years, where large no. of people come to take holy bath. Scope: to make it handicap friendly and to join the upper road with the Ghats. As there were markets all around the Ghats the hawkers used to sell their goods by roadside in a daily pattern. Early morning the flower vendors used to sit by the roads and the existing bridges, then the vegetable vendors, throughout the daytime there were clothes and footwear hawkers, and in the evening the food carts used to flood the roads and the bridges.

ENTRANCE FROM THE GHATS

VIEW FROM THE GHATS

Thus, the main aim was to provide these hawkers a designated space to sell their goods in shifts. This bridge is a multi activity bridge where hawkers can sell their goods, people can relax on the roof and its accessible to the road as well as the Ghats Also it’s a handicap friendly bridge

YATRI PRAABODHAN KENDRA – tourist information centre. The site is located in the town of lakkundi, Karnataka, which has an extremely hot and dry climate, with almost no rainfall in past 3 years. The town of lakkundi has a very interesting history where the old city is buried under the new (current) city. There were many stone temples, and dark rooms to keep the area cool and away from the harsh glare. The houses built there were typical stone and wood houses with small openings to avoid the heat and glare from the harsh sun. Scope : the site which was chosen had a bavi (step well), which was not in use. The main aim was to give importance to this bavi, and as it’s a tourist information centre, to depict the history was the priority. Thus the structure was designed to built half under the ground and half over it. The structure was designed with small opening, to get enough light and ventilation. It was designed to build in locally available stone and wood.

– the learning park. CONCEPT:

TREE SELECTION: Pune has had a long history with Banyan tree. Lokmanya Tilak started the initiative to educate Pune by tying a thread around a Banyan Tree. • बरगद (Bargad – Banyan Tree) is the National Tree of India. • Eventually "banyan" became the name of In the Bhargava Gita Krishna said "There is a banyan tree which has its roots upward and its branches down, and the Vedic hymns are its leaves. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas." •

The interpretation of the brief gave us an understanding that the tree should be the central element and focus of our site. However, the brief does not specify the intention of the visit of the people towards our site. Thus, we came to an understanding that although the tree is the main focus if we consider a micro level planning, in the macro level planning our site could be based on an idea or activity that we want to promote.

The way we have gone about choosing this is by looking at Pune in a broader perspective and try to revive the heritage of Pune. The heritage imbibes the culture and education that Pune is so proud of.

The Street was taken across the site to increase the footfall of the site and the design and siting of spaces give the pedestrians a glimpse of all the interesting spaces and promote them to use the Learning center which is anyway open to the Public. This creates a streetscape which becomes one of the most interesting and important element of our design. Banyan tree Library Viewing gallery Yoga Value Inculcation

To emphasize the axis a viewing gallery is provided exactly in line with the Banyan Tree. This acts like the Interaction space between Pedestrians crossing the street, People visiting the Park and people visiting the Learning Centre. It acts like the viewing gallery for the Banyan Tree. The side steps are the steps which allow interaction. •Similar to the Yoga Centre this is a single entity where the structure which defines the form, shades the space and retains the structure. •The orientation of the library allows diffused light to entre the space and gives a direct visual connection with the Banyan Tree. •A semi enclosed space Is created allowing a person to concentrate.
