Hampi is one of the most beautiful and evocative of all the historical sites in south India. Austere yet grandiose, it was established as the seat of Vijayanagara empire in the mid-14th century, a time when art and architecture flourished. Contemporary chroniclers from Persia, Italy, Portugal and Russia visited the empire during this time. But the historical roots of this place way back to 4th century BC because of its deep roots with Kishkinda Empire and Ramayana.
In 1565 AD, Hampi was conquered by the Sultanate troops pillaged it for six months, and abandoned. It was rediscovered in 1799 by Colin Mackenzie and the work for mapping and conservation began. In 1986, it was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
