Our orchestra functions as a time-machine: the group size, choice of instruments and playing techniques are tailored precisely to each project – from Monteverdi to Gershwin – allowing us to revisit the soundscape in which a composer has lived and worked. We like to compare this approach with the restoration of the Sistine chapel: cleared from the traces of time, it’s now boasting its intricate design, breathtaking precision and pallet to the full… leaving no visitor untouched.

Anima, founded and conducted by Jos van Immerseel, is a hub of vibrant music-making and passionate musicianship. Turning 30 in 2017, the orchestra loves to get inspired by new talents, and regularly collaborates with young conductors.

12 mouthpieces, 120 fingers, 304 keys – but just one aim: to play their hearts out! At each of its concerts the Belgian Saxophone Ensemble creates a unique unrepeatable world of sound with which the audience feels completely involved. From the bass saxophone all the way through to the sopranino and the percussive effects, there is an unbelievably broad range of colours. The musicians in BSE under artistic direction of Cezariusz Gadzina have full mastery of all aspects of their instruments, and demonstrate their skill with acrobatic ease. None of the standard stylistic labels apply to the music. The repertoire drawn from the widest possible range of genres allows the Ensemble to demonstrate its own special artistic qualities to the full.

BL!NDMAN

Š guy kokken

In 1988 Eric Sleichim founded BL!NDMAN, a saxophone quartet with a traditional line-up, which develops new performance techniques and substantially expands the repertoire for the instrument by continually exploring the boundaries with other disciplines and early music. Since 2008, BL!NDMAN became a collective of 4 quartets: unique in the music world. The original quartet BL!NDMAN [sax] shares the 20 years of experience with the young quartets, BL!NDMAN [drums], BL!NDMAN [vox] and BL!NDMAN [strings] and since 2014 BL!NDMAN [hybrid], a mixed quartet. As always, BL!NDMAN embraces other artistic disciplines, delights the eye, questions the ear and considers experiment of paramount importance.

Camille Babut du Marès was born in Brussels and began studying the violin at the age of 4. A graduate of several European institutions and prize-winner at many international competitions, Camille is regularly invited to perform at concerts in Europe and of course in Belgium (Bozar, Flagey …). This young violinist inspires genuine enthusiasm from the public and she most often plays as a soloist (Orchestre Symphonique de Liège, Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra …) and in a duo and trio. A committed musician, Camille is the artistic director of the festival Les Musicales de la Woluwe (in March 2016 she played alongside Gérard Caussé, David Cohen, Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden…).

She is also the founder of the Cosmopolitan Duo (with the pianist Maiko Inoue) and the Amethys Trio (with the viola player Clément Holvoet and the cellist Kacper Nowak).

Cluster is a management and production platform for newmusic composers and their ensembles. A farreaching mix of styles characterizes this new music: it is neither folk, jazz, symphonic nor world music, but all of these together, forged into a whole that represents the globalizing world in which we live. In a nutshell, the tonal poets of Cluster don’t really give a hoot about style characteristics, and mix them up in a fantastic way. Through their training and familiarity with different musical styles, they also excel in improvisation techniques. The freedom found in improvisation or jazz, the skills of classical music, the emotional intelligence of folk/world music, the humor of comedy and the energy of the rock band, it all comes together in their music. Cluster promotes, initiates collaborations, builds their national and international network, helps out with

administrative tasks and is recognized and supported by the Flemish Government. Joris Vanvinckenroye: composer and double bass player, toured with Björk and Roby Lakatos. Bands: Aranis, BASta!, and others Wouter Vandenabeele: internationally recognized composer, arranger and violinist. Crossroads of classical, jazz, folk and world music. Bands : Olla Vogala and GFVP (Ghent Folk Violin Project), duo Sara Salvérius and others Ananta Roosens: composer and violinist. of the 17th and 18th centuries by means of dedicated application of historical performance practices. Through the elaboration of original concert programmes, we have succeeded in broadening our field of creativity and above all in establishing a compelling dialogue with the audience by rendering palpable the deep qualities of complex works. We would like each note to transform into an emotion, a colour, a gesture, a word, a fragment of language. We wish for no single note be left to sound without purpose or sense, without emotion or hue. We have to reevaluate everything we think in order to revitalise these venerable forms. Our challenge is to reinvent the way we play, all of our technique so that not the notes but the music pervades.

clarinettist Peter Vermeersch is and remains Belgium’s most original and most daring ‘big band’. Not in the traditional sense of the word, but simply because it consists of fourteen musicians. The music of FES, varying from strictly written sheet music to liberating improvisation, is 95% homemade. Streaks of music of other composers are used as inspiration, frequently arranged, adapted and integrated into FES compositions, adding a wide range of atmospheres and styles to the eclectic FES universe. FES, who dares to flirt with other disciplines as theatre, opera and film and owns the ability to seduce a number of different audiences, from more select jazz listeners to a wild young rock public, is at its best live on stage.

Het Collectief

Š emanuel maes

The chamber music group Het Collectief was founded in 1998 in Brussels. Working consistently from a solid nucleus of five musicians, the quintet has created an intriguing and idiosyncratic sound, achieved by an unfamiliar mix of strings, wind instruments and piano. For its repertoire, Het Collectief returns to the Second Viennese School, the roots of modernism. Starting from this solid basis, it explores important twentieth century repertoire, including the very latest experimental trends. The group also creates a furore with daring crossovers between contemporary and traditional compositions and with adaptations of ancient music. Muffatti is a Brussels baroque orchestra founded in 1996 upon the initiative of musicians in the path of Georg Muffat (1653-1704) as their spiritual father. Les Muffatti are active in spreading models of universal beauty, creating moments of timeless contemplation and promoting genuine music: carrying out extensive studies, carefully choosing instruments and finding an appropriate rehearsal area to share the pleasure of playing. Directed over 10 years by Peter Van Heyghen, the orchestra decided in 2015 to position itself as a self-conducted orchestra, collaborating with famous international Konzertmeister and soloists. In that way, it meets its twofold goal: to embrace fully the musical practices of the baroque era and to bring them to a contemporary audience.

The Amenti Quartet was founded in 2010 by students at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels during their masters studies around the talents of Turkish pianist Merve Mersinligil. The existing quartet joins Merve on piano with active professional performers; Belgian violinist Vincent Hepp, German-American violist Neil Leiter, and Belgian cellist Sarah Dupriez. In 2011, while on a tour of the Faroe Islands, the Amenti Quartet gave the world premier performance of Kristian Blak’s piano Quartet. The direct collaboration with this great composer awoke a strong desire in the Amenti to relive this creative experience, and inspired the members to launch into a new creative adventure with the commission and creation of the work by Romain Zante. The Amenti Quartet focuses musically on romantic musical literature and finding the romanticism in past and present compositions.

The Amenti Quartet released its first album “Der Tod Und Der Junge Mann” on Phoenix Classics in 2015 featuring works from Lekeu, Mahler, Zante, and Blak.

Ricercar, to seek, has been the underlying motto of the Ricercar Consort ever since its foundation. It was in 1985, with J. S. Bach’s Musical Offering, that the ensemble made its first concert tour, having already acquired a solid international reputation with its recordings, notably in German Baroque cantatas and instrumental music. Today, under the direction of Philippe Pierlot, the Ricercar Consort continues to explore the Baroque repertoire, from chamber music to opera and oratorio, and to enthral music-lovers with performances that are both profound and rigorous.

Volksopera is a music theatre company that focuses entirely on the comic opera repertoire between 1850 and 1950. We wish to open up the richness of this often-neglected heritage. To achieve this goal, we plunge into research: exploring the forgotten repertoire, creating new editions, yet also an artistic research, looking to balance sound expression, text and staging. This leads to both authentic and innovative professional productions. That may sound to be somewhat of a paradox, but get to know us better and you will find it is not the only paradox we manage to reconcile‌ By sharing the results of our research we strive to be an open community resource. A Festival for all, with something for everybody Every year, from June to October, the Festival of Wallonia presents more than 150 concerts all over Wallonia and in Brussels. 2016: East-West For its 46 th edition, the Festival, inspired by the “East-West” theme, aspires to be a new voyage, a round trip featuring many concerts tinted with East-West influence, like real blends of music. Our guest of honour is Mathias Énard, winner of the Goncourt Prize 2015 with his book “Bousolle” [Compass]. Furthermore, two projects will run through the festival, with focus on a Persian percussionist, Keyvan Shemirani, and a “family” project conceived by Patrick Leterme geared to Japan: “Yokai!”

to music and movies. Located on the Flagey square in Brussels, this building – formerly the headquarters of the national radio and television institution – has become a crossroad where artistic disciplines can meet and exchange ideas. Culture lovers are welcome in this beautiful Art Deco building, to take part in various events which range from concerts of classical music, contemporary music or jazz, to film and video projects. Each year, Flagey has the honor of receiving some of the world’s most prominent artists, yet it still insists on offering opportunities to younger talents. Flagey has become one of the leading culture houses on the national as well as the inter-

national scene because of the exceptional acoustic qualities of the studios, the diversity of programming and events such as the Flagey Piano Days.

The beginning of the 21st century will go down in history as the era in which the internet and its associated image and sound culture reset our traditional audio attitudes. We do not believe in the classical market’s typical answer to any media revolution (paralysis and protectionism), but neither do we seek to imitate the video satiation which is pop industry’s answer to the crisis on the CD market.

Evil Penguin Productions devotes its energy and expertise to bringing classical (and jazz) content – be it a concert, a documentary, an artist’s portrait, an EPK – on the screen.

Recent productions: Pieter Wispelwey 392, De Beren Gieren, Winterreise with T. Beghin and J. van Elsacker, Beethoven rediscovered Anima Eterna, Fauré Requiem with H. Niquet and the Brussels Philharmonic, Palazzetto Bru Zane with Brussels Philharmonic, Big Bang Festival, … .
