Welcome
This is a special edition of the Keep an Eye Film Academy Festival. It is exactly 5 years ago since the Keep an Eye Foundation became partner of the Graduation Film Festival of the Netherlands Film Academy, so it’s an anniversary. We are celebrating with a very full and varied programme in EYE and the Tolhuistuin, where the Bachelor and Master students of the Class of 2015 will spend seven days showing what they stand for.

Welkom
Master of Film Graduation Show
The Class of 2015 is filled with optimism, the future. It presents itself as the colourful generation. We have tried to capture this fact in the beautiful design of this festival. Colourful not only as a form of optimism, but also possibly as the representation of how they want to present them selves in society: colourful, varied, on all fronts, in all fields, everywhere and all the time.
The Master students organise The Master and the Giant, a graduation show with project presentations, debates, films and installations. The Bachelor programme shows, alongside a broad selection of films, graduation work and set pieces of the students Production Design and IMVFX. Next to this we organise a relations day where young film talent contact established makers, broadcasting companies and the media.
A full programme, in which there is plenty to see and do for students, professionals and for you as a visitor.

Alumni Programme (I) Screening of films by alumni that were first developed at the Master of Film.
The Private Peep Machine video installation is an addition to the À la Cart Performance Webshop project and investigates ways of exhibiting a creative process. Two video loops are installed in the Private Peep Machines - The Making Of and A Chapter About A Chapter That is Only On Paper. The peep machines were inspired by a visit to the Amsterdam Sex Palace and Marcel Duchamp’s Étant donnés. The authors prepared an audio-visual archive containing traces of of their creative process, which the audience can peep in one by one.

Allez, Viens! Documentaire
How do humans relate to nature? And how come that is even a relevant question? It ought to be the most simple and obvious thing to answer. After all, we are also nature. Or do we really believe that? Don’t we in fact believe that we are set apart? That we are something other? That nature is just the context in which we act out our humanity. And that if we were not there to observe, assess and use it, it wouldn’t exist.
Signe Tørå Karsrud Video installation / film proposal
‘If a tree falls in the forest, and nobody hears it, does it make a sound?’
Symmetry Ruben van Leer ‘Symmetry’ is a dance & opera film, in which Cern researcher Lukas is thrown off balance, while working on the theory of everything and the smallest particle... Symmetry Unravelled Juliette Stevens A documentary about the Symmetry project, a total work of art filmed inside CERN the Large Hadron Collider. The doc shows a collision between the sciences and the arts, contextualizing this unique collaboration. Where does the inexhaustible dedication of the artist and scientist come from? And what does the meeting between the two yield? Alumni Programme (II) Screening of films by alumni that were first developed at the Master of Film. Et In Arcadia Ego Channa Boon Following a chess game, played by two residents of Odessa, Ukraine, sitting near the city’s Arcadia Beach, ‘Et In Arcadia Ego’, by Channa Boon, makes visible the heritage of Stalin’s totalitarian power game across the entire band of countries situated between Russia and Western Europe …

Boat-people Olivier Delebecque Live film performance “Live film performance” means that a film will be made with the audience inside the film theater instead of projecting a film to an audience. This local disconnection has become the core of my recent research process. It finds its origin in the necessity for me to bring the missing bodies of the screen into the film theatre. It brings back a contact with an audience through both a biological and spiritual act. This term, boat-people, began to be used to describe the movement of migrants fleeing Vietnam by sea at the end of the 70ʼs. They fled their country for political and economic reasons. Often overloaded, these boats have made many victims due to drowning, starvation and cold. Commercials Freedom of Expression is a Human Right [Filmblok D]
Debate What does it mean to be a ‘master of film’? In a round table discussion the students of 2015 question what it means to do ‘artistic research in film’. What does it entail? What does it offer? Why is it relevant? And what, in the end, does it mean to be a ‘master of film’? Exercise in idealism (with practical assignments) Ellenoor Bakker Video installation / film proposal Squatted in 1983, The Snakehouse is about to be evicted. A filmmaker and resident of the house wonders what to do at the moment of eviction. When the eviction turns out completely differently than expected she investigates what went wrong.

Free Falling Namfon Udomlertlak Docu-fiction film
Joyland Documentaire
Free Falling is a docu-fiction film that aims to explore the notion of reality and its ambiguities in both the real and the virtual world. It’s a story about self-discovery and traces the journey of a young woman who plays both the role of the film director and that of the youngest daughter in a Thai family. The daughter uses the making of the film to investigate the relationship between herself and her family and to understand the complexities involved before telling her parents about her life’s decision. Family, friends, co-workers, ex-lovers ... everyone gathers to remember the departed one and to untie the knots left behind. Or to make them even more entangled? Dress code: black. The game is aiming for a style inspired by ‘When Our Destinies Meet’. For those who are new to LARP it is best described as an improvisative participatory theatre without audience, every participant becomes a player, a co-creator.
It’s a wrap (op uitnodiging) Diploma-uitreiking Bachelor studenten.
The game is also a trial, an experiment in creating and developing characters and story through an interactive game. Therefor the event will be recorded.
Jack (a journey to fulfillment) Fictie [Filmblok C]
Lazarus Fictie [Filmblok A]

Imagine a giant public online archive of sent, drafted and never written emails from all over the world. A database of characters. A pool of inspiring stories. Nándi (30), a wannabe music composer returns to his home town in the Hungarian countryside after 7 years of abortive wandering across Europe. His stay is temporary, waiting for a visa to New Zealand where an apparently stable but not music-related job is waiting for him. He meets his mother, his friends, old memories, new love and also his father, whom he hasn’t seen for 20 years. All these encounters act as mirrors to Nándi, forcing him to come to terms with his life.

People. Beautiful People. Rosanne Pel Photo’s
“One City Ago” is a project proposal for an archival Web Documentary that takes the user on a virtual stroll across selected news footage from 1980s Amsterdam. Focusing on the locals, their relationships and conflicts, the project seeks to unearth the social imaginary of a city that no longer exist.
In Rosanne Pel’s earlier work her focus was on locations. Searching for the right setting for her new film project, Rosanne discovered that she was no longer that interested in locations. Instead she was drawn to the people who inhabit those locations. The importance of this shift in perspective - from fiction to a combination of fiction and documentary became apparent when she made a series of portrait photographs during a trip to Poland.
One City Ago: Rabotnik TV Pablo Núñez Palma Video installation Experimental advertisement, cynic news reporters and all kinds of registrations of the underground scene in the early 1980s. That was Rabotnik TV, one of Amsterdam’s most experimental pirate TV station. Arranged on a web interface, users are here invited to take a stroll through fragments of a very unique archive, which makes visible an uncommon face of the social imaginary of the time. Quinten I: a Boy with a Memory as a Movie Karaoke Machine Bram Loogman, Paul Groot Fiction film Quinten Wall is an exceptional psychological case. He suffers from aphasia, and he has a memory problem. Or problem, it is a great opportunity: his memory is loaded with all the movies he ever saw, he is a walking movie database. He is using his aphasia to fight his ambitious talkative brother. During a stay in Venice they will fulfil the last wish of their mother, but instead of showing brotherly love, their last encounter will end with a fatal incident.
Shangri-La: the tourist experience Mirka Duijn Video installation
Talks (II) Images from the Underground: Amsterdam in the 80’s Pablo Núñez Palma, Ellenoor Bakker
In 2002 a tourist town in China renamed itself into Shangri-La (paradise), after allegedly proving it was the real thing. After the renaming the town quickly changed. Mirka Duijn visited the town a decade after the renaming, asking questions about authenticity and reality under the influence of the tourist-gaze. In this installation the filmmaker explores the tourist experience focusing on the temporal differences between contrasting places in Shangri-La.
Why are the 1980s such an important time for the cultural history of Amsterdam and why is it so now relevant – specially for younger generations– to rediscover them? Menno Grootveld and Gerhard Rekvelt, cultural activists from that generation, will discuss their latest projects addressing this subject. Archive, aesthetics and activism will be the keywords of this session.

Quinten II: Unlinked Bram Loogman, Paul Groot Fiction film After Quinten has over overcome his aphasia, a new complicated situation arises. His traumas were interwoven with his obsessions, his idiosyncrasies, and all other features that make him who he is. He looses grip on his identity and his relation with his girlfriend Syvlie and the rest of the world. He is suffering from anxiety and he sees great danger in the almighty Apple empire which also seems to be after him. The question is to what extent his fear is grounded, but also, how long Sylvie can endure it. Quinten III: The Last Movie (3D) Bram Loogman, Paul Groot Fiction film Sylvie has moved back to Thailand, her motherland, to find herself a home, but Quinten follows her. In an attempt to reconnect, and to preserve their love he persuades her into making a film together. Shangri-La, paradise under construction: online research archive Mirka Duijn Archive An online archive of Mirka Duijn’s master research into tourism in relation to authenticity/reality in a Tibetan tourist town in China called Shangri-La.
Spectatorship, Trust, Responsibility. Long John Silver is not interested in those. All he cares about is his missing eye and an old gold treasure. I, on the other hand, am concerned. I start understanding why Captain Flint insisted on signing a contract before departure. We left the port ahead of schedule and the ship will have to be finished on the way. We are reaching open waters very soon. The question is who is going to be the captain and who the master of this journey. Student Presentations Short presentations of the research and work by six of the master students: Momchil Alexiev, Olivier Delebecque, Nina Jan, Bram Loogman, Balint Mark Turi and Namfon Udomlertlak. Talks (I) Reviewing authorship Pablo Núñez Palma, Momchil Alexiev, Balint Mark Turi, Agnese Cornelio Cinema, Interactivity, and Authorship. When cinema steps out of its domain and enters the territories of internet and virtual reality, the relationship between those three separate terms sets forth a qualitatively new discussion. Join us in an open panel that brings together artist and filmmakers who share their view on the issue of authorship today.

Talks (III) The framing of sexual violence Rosanne Pel How to frame the perpetrators of sexual violence in film? Looking at scenes from films by Bruno Dumont, Pedro Almodóvar and Ulrich Seidl, Rosanne Pel and guests Cris van der Hoek and Eugenie Jansen will discuss the need for a change of perspective – inspired by the work of philosopher Hannah Arendt – which also leads to a different way of working with actors. Talks (IV) ‘We have never been modern’ Olivier Delebecque, Namfon Udomlertlak, Signe Tørå Karsrud Objects speak to us. Do you speak to objects? They want to know that what we are is something actual and not an illusion. Namfon Udomlertlak, Signe Tørå Karsrud and Olivier Delebecque question the modern division between culture and nature. Through a performative lecture they will explore their personal (mis)conceptions of life.
