A SECOND OF NOTHINGNESS

Can we stop for a second the rush of images, texts, information, the endless bombardment of data?. This input of images, over which we do not seem to have any control whatsoever, is so overwhelming that it reaches a point when we are unable to aprehend or absorb anything; we reach a point when the flux of images produce in us a kind of blindness. At that point, at that second of nothingness do we perceive anything? Are we lost in total “nothingness” in that second, or on the contrary do we start to see “things”. All the artists who participate in this exhibition, are interested in that liminal space, in that second, when nothingness
seems to open the doors of perception. We also wanted to play with the idea of scenography, giving the exhibition space an important role in the staging of the exhibition. When we were discussing on how to play with the architectural framework of the building, words like opera, baroque, minimalism, pop up in the conversation. We wanted with this staging to mirror the concept of the exhibition, the dichotomy between this overwhelming flux of images and the nothingness of a second. This staging, this “mis en place”, implies a kind of narrative, that will guide the viewer through the exhibition.

Direct looks superimposing themselves upon one another as they cross, and yet this slender line of reciprocal visibility embraces a whole complex of uncertainties Michel Foucault In my work, installations, photo and video, there is a constant tension between the actions of looking, seeing and perceiving. What is not seen, what is not said, what is absent is as important as what we see. The collision between images - or lack of images - and language plays a crucial role in the act of perception, which is always fragmented: we can only
have fleeting moments of seeing, but the picture always remains incomplete. The inability to articulate through language what we see, creates the uncanny efect of making something visible and invisible at the same time. Recently I am working with three dimensional installations. Some of them include photographic images, that are in the process of losing their power as image, and have become objects to be placed among other objects. In these works, the installation itself becomes the site, re-creating mental landscapes.

I play with everything that surrounds me; I redistribute given roles. For me, art is a space in which we constantly take different perspectives through which we get different views on things. AMBIGUITY AS AN OBSERVATIONAL AID - I’M AN EXPERIMENTALIST! //A cat is an animal, sometimes an object - but also it provides a space// I take an interest in objects and the way in which they are ordered, in human beings and their perception; in the relationship between subject and object. I find everyday things interesting, because they have become so ordinary. I investigate the space between things and what is pure about them, at the same time paying attention to observation.
How do we perceive objects, and howdo they perceive us? Can objects be autonomous? I am fascinated by things that have there own intrinsic logic - which is not always the regular intellectual logic. They may not have a specific functionality and sound illogical. I believe that we can also investigate the world in an “idiotic” way! Most of my art is typified by a certain logic: I try to reorder things in a nonintellectual way. The question is, “What is logic, and when does something appear to be logical?”I search for ways which could be seen as logical and completely idiotic at the same time. For example, what connects a dachshund to a lemon?
