SPECIFICATIONS
120 beds of Cape Cod Hospital New Tower in the existing campus, including radiation spaces, infusion, ICU, med-surge beds. The building is connected to the existing building on the ground level.

Trapazoid Plan The following plans are showing ground floor which connects to the existing building and a trypical bed floor. The rooms followed the building shape to be trapezoid. The trapezoid rooms also created depth for the corridor.

140,000 GSF total, with Emergency department, observation rooms, operating rooms, ICU and med-surg beds floors. Studied two options for the bed floors, one as tower and one as bar.

Lead feasibility study on ransforming an existing 50-year-old garage to life science building. Working with civil and MEP engineers on analyzing the possibility to renovate the structure, facade elements and new core.
SPECIFICATIONS
10,000 GSF total, with 50% lab and 50% office space. Community meeting and retail space on ground floor, tenant support and storage in the basement. The site is in an extreme dense urban condition.

VERTICAL FORUM Groningen Forum, Groningen, The Netherlands Design Development Studio | 2015 Spring Instructor: Mark Mistur, Erik Churchill Collaboration with Sen Zhang The vertical arrangement of the social functions and circulation on the front engage the new social and spatial potentials for the forum, while establishing a clear visual connection back to the ground. Groninger Forum will extend the city context and the social requirement of the new era vertically.

The main idea is to reintroduce the plaza culture into the new site and create a connection between the historical one and the new one. Since not all events are suitable to be held in the outdoor environment, the facade zone of the new building is considered to be a vertical plaza which alternates outdoor and indoor spaces.

INTEGRATED FACADES WITH ZIGZAG CIRCULATION

The forum is created by the “zigzag” circulation that connects three sides of the facade. By pulling up the flat ground into the air in a zigzag shape, more sheltered space are generated and people can circulate and use the space that created by this thickened facade. The space are visually connected while looking from the front landscape. The landscape of the small plaza in front is a continuation of the building facade.

DYNAMIC ATRIUM A side atrium is introduced between the folded surface of the facade and the regular floors. The edges of the floors are following the edges of the folded facade surface. Therefore, the side atrium becomes a dynamic vertical space with a skylight on top. The connection between the two are programmable bridges and terraces. Since the floor edges are setback differently on each floor, some floors would have an area of triangular space that is open to the atrium. The facade zone is supported by the three “zigzag” shaped spatial trusses that tied back to the cores on opposite sides.

TRAPEZOID PLAN The site is tight and irregular in the historical city center of Groningen. Inspired by the isosceles trapezoid shape of the plan of the building, the structural grid is divided from the center line and perpendicular to north and south side of the facade. A1

From north and south side of the facade, the design of the side atrium and the floor setbacks are clear. The back side is cladded with channel glass which not only provides privacy and moderate sunlight but also with the several clear glass on the translucent facade it allows public to obtain an active atmosphere of the inside of the building. #

FROM OPEN-AIR TO VERTICAL PLAZA The original city market piazza has been the platform stage of a variety of self-organizing social functions. Yet this market can no longer accommodate the new possibilities of events of the today’s standard due to the limitation in size and the lack of considerate public service. By vertical arranging the social functions and circulation on the front, it engages the new social and spatial potentials for the forum. Throughout the day, the building is activated by different programs. The programs interact with each other as well, especially between regular floor area programs “served space” and facade zone programs “servant space”.

VERTICAL CIRCULATION Circulation-wise, the escalators in the atrium take advantage of the different setbacks of the floor edges. They are provided for fast accessing the program spaces in the middle of the building. The cinemas which take up fifth and sixth floors are recognizable from both interior and exterior as six hanging boxes. They also provide lighting and ceiling-scape for the gallery space below.

Hamburg is one of the Hanseatic League cities that has a tradition of commercial activities along the sea as well as a consistent skyline that consists of a series of Gothic church towers. The new tower designed for office and local urban planning department protects the existing skyline and bridges itself to the other communities in Hafencity. URBAN STRATEGY The site is at the east point of Hafencity that has a series of level changes from 10-meter public transit platforms to sea level. The landscape and the horizontal podium are two network systems that bridge the level differences of the site condition. The project connects the tower with the public transit platforms by a horizontal podium while connects the platforms with the riverside programs by the landscape system.

The tower respects the tradition of Hanseatic skyline by marking the threshold level of 130-meter in the tower. The interior space reduced to its minimum at this level and becomes the public space for both goverment officials and the public. The top of the tower that overlooks Hamburg gives the goverment and the residents a space for debate and discussion.

GOVERMENT vs PUBLIC The upper part of the tower designed for meeting spaces for Hamburg Urban Planning Department and have a grand debate hall and sky lobby on the top which overlooks the entire city in all directions. The 130-meter threshold public space designed for both goverment officals and the public.

Previous owned by military institutions, the governerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s island is a perfect location to view the skyline of Manhattan. NYC goverment bought this land and turned it into a park and several educational institutions. Previous occupied by approximately fourteen efficiently constructed houses for military use, the new development zone is evmpty without any grid constraints as in Manhattan. Therefore, it is proposed to reorient the student housing building and serve it for public flow as well as for the best view of the city.

STUDENT COMMUNAL PARK Half of the land of Governer’s island will be built as an organic-shaped park designed by West-8. By introducing the park typology vertically into the building, students will have their own “parks” where is able to hold their own events and conversations. In addition, a public elevator serves the public flow directly to the sky lobby. Half of this solid massing will enter the transparent tower body as a void space.

The relationship between the public elevator core and the tower body is shown in the plans. The core is totally solid on the bottom and becomes a void after intervened in the main transparent body. Program-wise, it contains a separated space at the bottom and becomes part of the double load corridor in the middle, lastly turns into void inside the sky lobby of the main body. The landscape of the site is designed as a set of different functional circles. A road passes through between the main body and the core.

Students can easily access different floors through the communal park which is unusual in traditional student housing projects. Communication and interaction between students are essential to campus life. The idea of semi-private is also introduced here as a space aparts from general public accessible areas and completely privacy zones such as the study rooms. Furnitures such as meeting tables, lounge chairs, booking shelves are provided in this space.

EFFICIENT UNIT
ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN
Each unit is a condensed double-bedroom with bed and desk which are fixed on the wall and a balcony. The window is slightly rotated to avoid direct glare. The door side is also translucent to maximize the use of day lighting.
The east and west side of the facade are double skin facades with the outer layer cladded with quadrangular metal panels. The density of the solid pixels increases from bottom up as closer to top. The north and west facade are fritted with white strips to enhance the verticality of the building.

Although it contains hundreds of individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s living, the building becomes part of the landscape. ACCESSIBLE ROOF
The building is at the threshold of the campus and downtown Troy and of campus life and urban life. The main idea is to create multi-pathways between public and private, and between massiveness and transparentness. Public are able to commute from downtown to campus without interrupt student life.
Based on site conditions, it is half underground on south side. Roof is accessible from upperhill campus where helps the flow of people to circulate through the building or into the building. Main entrance is in the center of building where next to the road. Programs are distributed based on the need of daylighting and privacy.

TYPOLOGY
FACADE
The central idea of the building which illustrated in the plan is the contrast between massive and transparent, private and public, normative and dynamic. Besides, the overall building becomes a bridge of the landscape uphill and downtown.
The facade towards the perimeter of the building is designed with louvers to protect privacy while the facade towards the courtyard is more transparent. The bridges are supported by the spatial trusses system, and contains small interior terraces.

LEVELS OF TRANSPARENCY The facade of the building is designed with louvers in layers which conveys different levels of transparency. The pattern derives from a precedent study of Sejima Kazuyoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kitagata Apartment in Gifu. It has three different levels of transparency on its facade, from solid, transparent to void.

VOICE OF COMMUNITY Software: AutoCAD, Rhinoceros, Photoshop, Hand Modelling Performing Art Campus, Chicago, Illinois GSD Option Studio | 2017 Spring Instructor: Jeanne Gang This pavillion starts with the research of steel in Chicago and finds its relations to the site by bridging sweet water foundations and World Business Chicago. WBC has working with CHICAGO MADE to collaborate with local successful performers that they wish to train local young people with a broader career paths. This campus, therefore, selects performing arts such as music, sculptural art and film art as the main functions. It is a win-win situation for both performers and local urban farming community. Artists and performers can derive their ideas from local peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lives and stories, while local community can benefit from the art pieces they produce because their voices can be louder to reach to the world.
