SECTIONS OF CONTEXT
INTRODUCTION The main intentoin of this assignment is to create a story-telling device, as a stage design of theatre. The Solitaire Mystery, a fantasy novel written by Norwegian writer, Jostein Gaarder in 1990. The philosophical themes of the story are around nature of existence and reincarnation of destiny. The book follows two seemingly separate stories: one of them is that a 12-year-old boy, Hans-Thomas, and his father are driving through Europe on a journey to locate and bring home the boy’s estranged mother. Another story is that a mystery hidden inside giant sticky bun which Hans-Thomas accidently acquired. As the plot develops, the two stories are progressing from parallel to overlap.

CONCEPT
SCENE A
Tunnel books consist of a set of pages bound with two folded concertina strips on each side and viewed through a hole in the cover. Openings in each page allow the viewer to see through the entire book to the back. Void and solid layers of scenery sections overlap, just like juxtaposition of time ,space, fantasy and reality. It also provides clues for the answer of this story.

SUNDIAL CEMETERY
CONCEPT The site is hidden in the environment, and a huge abandoned chimney on it has carried on its time as a sundial for decades.

SITE
DESIGN EVOLUTION
Because of the site closed to the main transport routes and its special soil, the brick kiln was constructed approximately in 1965. It mainly manufactured brick for constructional need. However, the kiln was closed down in 1985. Dozens of years later, the abandoned brick kiln and the chimney still completely stands erect, which are lost in the busy roads and in crowded development factories.
Underneath of the old brick kiln, the memorial space is constructed by digging and integrating abandoned smoke channels. Furthermore, it connects the burial area embedded in the hillside. The chimney above ground level is not only the sundial of this program but also the light well of the altar below. 1. Original constructions on the site

PERSPECTIVE C
The aim of this project is to retain the existing buildings and the landscape with the least destruction in order to maintain the tranquility of the original site. All programs are connected with the circulation of the mourners (the living). Those travel from the surface descending to the underground memorial hall and finally reach their destination: outdoor graves. This process not just symbolizes a cycle of life but enable a link between the past, the present, and the future. It is also a course to settle one’s mind with dramatic space compression and the light changes.
CUTAWAY VIEW D
The horizon defines the boundary between the living and the dead. The graves are situated at the end of the mourning route, facing the open valley and humbly blending into the terrain and environment.

The roof volume is formed by the shade of the chimney. The shape of the roof inducts rainwater into the basin. The reflection of light in different times enriches poetic expression of the underground memorial space.

INTERACTIVE REFUGE
CONCEPT A periscope is an instrument for observation from a concealed position. In its simplest form it consists of a tube with mirrors at each end set parallel to each other at a 45-degree angle.
Program | Architectural Design Studio III Semester | 2000 Autumn Advisor | Wen Tzu-hsien
PREMISE The major premise of the project is to create an interactive installation in the 90 x 90 x 210 cm limit. The internal space is designed by the ergonomic standard, and made several openings of senses, sight ( a periscope ) and hearing ( and intercom ) used to communicate with the external world.

ILLUSTRATION The refuge provides for people a place to respite from the external environment, and becomes the interface between the privacy and public. However, the observer in a limited space whose senses can been extended with Interactive devices. In this mobile installation, the user can observe the external environment through the periscope. The act of sharing a part of the chair with the person sitting outside and communicating with the intercom begins to blur the interface.

DUALISTIC LIGHTBOX
INTRODUCTION “The inner box unpacks the outer at the same time as the outer box unpacks the inner. The main purpose of this project is to create a mobile and reusable promotion booth of yearly student recruiting for school. In order to analyze the subjective position between seeing and being seen, the main idea is tried not only constructing the dramatic atmosphere for this promotion booth, but also enabling the function of street promotional device.
Program | Architectural Design Studio III Semester | 2000 Autumn Feature | Group Project Position | Group Leader
CONCEPT The concept is inspired by the peepshow box which is a device containing a set of pictures or objects. People can view the images in the box through a small hole or magnifying glass on it. Before unfolded (STEP 1), the box is a mobile equipment of advertising promotion like a peep box. However, after unfolded (STEP 5), it transforms into an exhibition booth. When the viewers enter this light box, they also become a part of images. PEEPSHOW BOX

CONCEPT Symbiosis: any of several living arrangements between members of different species, including mutualism, commensalisms, and parasitism. In a very broad sense, any association between two species population that live together is symbiotic, whether the species benefit, harm, or have no effect on one another..
Program | Architectural Design Studio III Semester | 2001 Spring Advisor | Wen Tzu-hsien
ANALYSIS In the study of conceptual models, the major intention is to represent the phenomenon of symbiosis. The first approach is that using void and solid materials distinguish between hosts and guests. These solid fragments are joined together with structures. In the second study, an existing object (space) was placed in with external ones. Among this process, a close interdependence between them occurs.

SITE
PROGRAM
The site is located in the important marketplace of consumer electronics products and surrounded by transportation routes (flyovers and roads), as an isolated island hidden in the city. It stands quietly among other magnificent structures, often going unnoticed by passerby. Therefore the ruins and landscape in the site was preserved. This design began to develop from the existing construction.
Designed to invigorate local cultural energy, this programs offer several working studios where the artists interact with each other and a broader audience through public lectures and shows. Inspired by the grand surrounding scenery, the resident artists are encouraged to explore the many possibilities available to them for creating new work. The whole site is enclosed by the external wall. All functions are extended from the interior wall which also defines the public (artist’s studios) and private (exhibition spaces) places. The circulations connect all programs, and finally intersect in the primary exhibition space.
