‘Watamu Marine National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is blessed with talcum-white beaches, vibrant coral reefs and teeming sea life’.
Wildlife and white sand beaches in Kenya
Take the slow road from Nairobi to the Indian Ocean coast on an 11-day deep dive into Kenya’s most breathtaking environments. After a night in the capital, where you might like to pay a call on some orphaned elephants or endangered giraffes, you’ll hit the trail to Amboseli National Park. You’ll want at least two nights here, especially if you’re based at the award-winning Tawi eco-lodge with its exceptional views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Game drives are as much about the park’s stunning scenery as the wildlife – though there’s plenty of that, from herds of elephants to the more elusive cheetahs – and we’ve added a bush walk with a Maasai guide for a different perspective.
Two hours away, Tsavo West National Park encompasses 3,500 square miles of spectacularly varied habitats, including grassy plains, thick woodland and desert scrub, and the animal life is just as varied. A twonight stay will give you time to soak up the stretching-for-ever vistas,
spot elephants dyed red by the soil they like to roll in and see nature after dark on a thrilling night drive. The fabulous Finch Hattons tented camp, named after the adventurer of Out of Africa fame is our choice of accommodation here thanks to its lavish tents, gourmet food and blissful spa – and it even has a stargazing deck.
Finish with a change of scene in an altogether different protected area. Watamu Marine National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is blessed with talcum-white beaches, vibrant coral reefs and teeming sea life. Settle in for some R&R at somewhere suitably refined, such as Hemingways Watamu, a boutique property on a sheltered stretch of sand within the park where you can snorkel for hours, learn to kitesurf, wander a ruined medieval town or do nothing much at all.

Dive into America’s Golden Triangle
Revel in the delights of three of west-coast America’s most emblematic destinations on a nine-night made-to-measure adventure that will capture your imagination. Set the ball rolling in San Francisco, where you will have time to capture that perfect shot of the Golden Gate Bridge, ride a vintage cable car and immerse yourself in the bustle of the historic Chinatown district. Don’t overlook the hip and happening dining scene –the City by the Bay has more restaurants per head than any other in the US – while oenophiles might enjoy a day out in the Napa and Sonoma wine regions.
From here, it’s a short hop to Las Vegas, a twinkling blaze of neon light in the heart of the Mojave Desert. There’s never a dull moment in this fantastical playground for grown-ups, where you can drift in a gondola along a replica Grand Canal, marvel at the Bellagio fountains’ watery light show or fall asleep in an Egyptian-style pyramid. If a flutter at one of the many roulette tables isn’t your scene, you might like to splash out on a helicopter ride over the natural glories of the Grand Canyon and get a birds-eye view of the Strip into the bargain.
Finish with a dash of Hollywood glitz in Los Angeles, where you could take behind-the-scenes movie studio tours, check out the celebrity handprints in the concrete outside the kitsch Chinese Theatre and browse the glossy stores along Rodeo Drive. For a dose of more highbrow culture, the Huntingdon has rare books, fine art and a serene botanical garden, while the ancient artefacts in the Getty Villa are almost as interesting as the extraordinary building itself. More drawn to the beach? Join the surf set in Santa Monica, take in the bustling boho scene along Venice Boardwalk or escape the throng in Malibu’s quiet coves.
Savour the best of Vietnam
From fascinating cities bursting with chaotic life to landscapes like something out of a dream, Vietnam is a country of highlights. You won’t want to miss the vibrant capital, Hanoi, which you’ll discover with a private driver and guide – and gain an insider’s perspective as you go. It’s a superb place for a first taste of the country’s delicious cuisine, whether you opt for a cookery class or a street-food tour. From here, the pace slows completely at UNESCO-listed Halong Bay, where traditional junks cruise through its mystical scenery, and you’ll fall asleep to the sound of lapping waves and wake to tai chi on deck.
A colourful and complex history is to the fore in Hue (pronounced ‘Hway’), the elegant capital of the last ruling dynasty. On the included Highlights in a Day experience, you’ll be whisked by dragon boat along the Perfume River from World Heritage tombs and pagodas to the glorious walled Imperial City. In nearby Hoi An, also UNESCO-approved, the past is served up on a more intimate scale. On an included walking tour, you’ll explore atmospheric narrow lanes lined by the weathered wooden homes of long-vanished merchants, stopping at temples, tiny museums and the famous covered bridge. Fill your free time with memorable adventures, from making a traditional silk lantern – the streets are festooned with them – to riding a bicycle into the timeless, tranquil countryside.
Round off a thrilling holiday in high-octane Ho Chi Minh City, where having your own guide and car, with someone to drive it, will let you craft your perfect timetable with the benefit of local knowledge. It’s not all urban bustle, though; you’ll also spend a day in the fertile Mekong Delta, travelling by boat along a spider’s web of rivers and canals.

Hit the heights in the Western Himalayas
Uncover another side of India in its less-travelled north west, dominated by the dramatic peaks of the world’s highest mountain range. Its gateway is the holy city of Amritsar, where we’ve tracked down a 250-year-old family-owned haveli that feels more like a home than a hotel. Its treeshaded garden is a serene place to relax between outings to the glittering Golden Temple, the heart of the Sikh religion, and to the border of India and Pakistan to witness the pomp-filled nightly closing ceremony.
From this sacred spot, you’ll journey up into the Western Himalayas to Dharamsala, famous as the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. You might like to explore its Buddhist temples, taking in the soundtrack of gongs, bells and chanted prayers, or stretch your legs with a walk through the forest to a local village, before settling into your charming Tibetan-run guesthouse. The discoveries pile up as you continue through this dramatic landscape, with stays at a tea estate and a manor house and everything from 3,500-year-old forts and ancient Hindu rock temples to look forward to.
At Shimla, you’ll be taken back to the days of the Raj: this much-loved hill station was its summer capital. Shape your time here with optional experiences such as artistic tours, a day with a family or a cultured walking trail – though when it comes to where to rest your head, the quaint cottages at Jungle Lodge get our vote. Drop back towards the plains on the UNESCO-listed Himalayan Queen toy railway, a centuryold engineering wonder, before travelling on to India’s energetic capital, Delhi, where dawn walks, street-food tours and home cooking lessons are well worth considering.
Explore Canada and Alaska by road, rail and sail
Why settle for one iconic journey when you could combine two into a bucket list-worthy odyssey crammed with memorable moments? After touchdown in Calgary, a former Winter Olympics host city, you’ll be whisked off to Banff to take in its national park landscapes, which are impressive enough to have been given World Heritage status.
We won’t let you miss Lake Louise, ‘the Jewel of the Rockies’, one of the first stops on an included sightseeing transfer along the Icefields Parkway. This day in the shadow of giants concludes in the town of Jasper where you’ve got a couple of nights to seek out some of the highlights of Jasper National Park independently. The next part of the adventure is a one-night journey along the western-most section of VIA Rail’s The Canadian route, during which you’ll be held spellbound by the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. Once you’ve reached Vancouver, you’ll be able to discover for yourself why British Columbia’s biggest city is regularly voted one of the world’s best places to live. Enjoy the highlights on an included day-long city tour, then spend time diving into the cosmopolitan cultural scene in hip Gastown, vibrant Chinatown and arty Yaletown.
That won’t be the end of the fun, however. For the next stage of this epic itinerary, you’ll be aboard the Celebrity Solstice on a seven-night round trip to a towering glacier in Alaska, which sporadically tumbles giant lumps of ice into the water below. As you glide along the Pacific coastline, there’ll be pauses for optional dog-sled rides into the wilderness, visits to a Tlingit village and so much more, along with plenty of opportunities to spot the local wildlife – puffins, orcas and bald eagles, to name just a few.

See the best of unspoiled Costa Rica
Draped in protected rainforests teeming with wildlife, Costa Rica is a captivating poster child for conservation and rightly features on many travel wishlists. Thanks to its small size – it’s no bigger than Wales – you can take in its highlights in just over a week without feeling rushed (though if you’d like to stay longer, we can make it happen). Flights arrive in San José, the bustling capital rated one of the region’s safest. Take a shortcut to its urban soul with the option of a guided afternoon walk that covers everything from excellent museums to the vibrant Central Market, or opt for a nature hike along the verdant trails around the arcadian Xandari Resort & Spa, your suggested retreat on the fringes of the sprawling city.
Moving on, it’s time to immerse yourself in one of the country’s most awe-inspiring sights: Arenal Volcano National Park, named after the stillbubbling volcanic cone that dominates the skyline. Follow trails through forests and old lava fields, take a walk in the tree canopy in search of spider monkeys, sloths and toucans, or book a sunset birdwatching boat trip on Lake Arenal. If you overdo it, there are natural thermal springs galore to ease any aches, including seven with panoramic volcano views at the wonderfully laidback and child-friendly Arenal Kioro Suites & Spa.
The Nicoya Peninsula on Costa Rica’s Pacific coastline provides an Edenlike penultimate port of call – it’s one of only five Blue Zones in the world – and is an idyllic setting for Hotel Punta Islita, a much-lauded eco-luxury beach hotel. We love its Authentic Costa Rica programme, which lets you enjoy four free activities every day, from ziplining and monkey-spotting hikes to mangrove kayaking tours and surfing lessons.
Be chauffeur-driven through Sri Lanka
There’s only one problem with choosing a private car and driver for your Sri Lanka sojourn: you’ll never want to travel any other way again. Leaving the navigating, parking and the rest to someone else means you can enjoy the sights of this gloriously diverse island, from venerable incense-scented temples to wildlife-rich forests and pinch-me coastal scenery, without a care. All you have to do is decide the places and experiences that interest you most, and we can help you put together your fully customised dream itinerary.
If you need inspiration, how about combining ancient towns and tea plantations with leopard spotting and sea views? Leafy lakeside Kandy, a former capital, is brimming with ancient temples and provides a serene gateway to the delights of Hill Country. You’ll want to spend at least two nights in Nuwara Eliya, aka ‘Little England’, taking in its colonial-era architecture and verdant, mist-draped scenery and trying your hand at picking tea on an immersive optional experience.
Make Yala National Park your next stop for big cats and a spot of rustic luxury at intimate Uga Chena Huts, where you can hit the spa and dine among the dunes between game drives. Ratchet up the chill-out factor by moving on, almost certainly reluctantly, to the stunning beach-strung south coast, where we think you’ll love the impressive service and facilities of Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort. Its Beach Pool Villas are steps from the sand, but if you’d rather be active than sunbathing, you could head into Galle, perhaps, or have a surfing lesson. Ease the trip to the airport with a final night just outside Colombo at the Mount Lavinia Hotel, which has an intriguing 210-year history and a dramatic clifftop setting
overlooking a private beach.

New Zealand from top to toe by car
With stark volcanic landscapes, endless coastlines patrolled by whales and a rich Māori culture, the Land of the Long White Cloud is a beguiling destination that rewards in-depth exploration. Thanks to the uncrowded roads (outside the main cities), a self-drive tour by car is a great way to get under New Zealand’s skin and enjoy the thrill of the open road as you go. We’ve used our in-depth knowledge to create a sample three-week itinerary that guides you effortlessly from top to toe, breaking up the driving time with meaningful breaks to keep it fun.
The adventure kicks off in the swirling city of Auckland, where we’ve found a harbourside hotel that’s moments from shops, bars and restaurants. Jetlag banished, you’ll get behind the wheel to wend your way south through the North Island. You’ll be able to delve into Coromandel’s Gold Rush history and unwind on its scenic beaches, wallow in bubbling thermal mud pools in Rotorua – pausing en route the remarkable Hobbiton film set from Lord of the Rings – and enjoy Art Deco architecture and gannet colonies in Napier on the way to Wellington and the wineries of nearby Martinborough.
You’ll arrive on the South Island on the InterIslander ferry, where the route from the Marlborough wine region’s gourmet delights takes in whale-watching hotspots, the self-styled adventure capital of the world and the icy splendour of the Glacier Region. For the grand finale, you will leave your wheels behind in Greymouth to catch the TranzAlpine train across the spectacular Southern Alps to Christchurch, a city with a seismic past. If you’re not pressed for time, you could add in a day to cruise the waters of Fiordland, the country’s largest national park, or arrange a stopover in both directions – Singapore and the UAE are popular options.
Take a walk on the wild side in Borneo
There are rainforests, and then there’s Sabah’s Danum Valley, whose lowland rainforest is 130 million years old. Your three days in this protected ecosystem could be some of the most memorable of your life, with adventures to make any nature-lover happy. The local inhabitants include orangutans, red leaf monkeys, pygmy elephants, clouded leopards and 320 species of birds, which you’ll have an opportunity to glimpse from tree-top canopy walkways, on night-time game drives and during guided trail walks.
When not on the track of elusive wildlife, you’ll venture out on expeditions to discover an ancient burial site set into the side of a cliff and cool off afterwards with a laidback tubing voyage along a junglefringed river. And, of course, there’s time to soak up the haunting natural soundtrack of trills, caws and cries from your chalet terrace in the awardwinning Borneo Rainforest Lodge, an eco-luxe resort in the verdant heart of the conservation area.
After all the excitement, we’ll zip you west to Pulau Gaya, a speedboat ride from Kota Kinabalu. This mangrove-fringed, rainforest-smothered island has just one place to stay, Gaya Island Resort, a five-star bolthole whose hillside villas seem to melt into the rampant greenery. Surrounded by a marine park, it takes an active role in conservation, from supporting turtle rescue programmes to raising awareness of the island wildlife. You can snorkel among thriving coral reefs or take a forest walk with the resident naturalist, then savour signature and crafted experiences from a traditional evening barbecue on the beach to a hands-on cooking class. If that sounds much too energetic, the menu at the secluded Spa Village includes blissinducing natural treatments based on local healing traditions.

Step back in time at this Taormina grande dame
First opened in 1904, Excelsior Palace Hotel, Sicily is a classic property that has one of the best settings in Taormina, on a rocky outcrop just steps from the oldest medieval city gate. There are striking panoramic views at every turn – down over the lush gardens to the beautiful pool and cobalt sea beyond, across to simmering Mount Etna and over the rooftops of the historic centre. Days here slip by effortlessly, from breakfasts of home-cooked Sicilian pastries on the terrace to strolls through the town’s winding cobbled streets and a cooling dip to finish. It’s all charmingly, and irresistibly, old school.
Top tip: Book one of the Superior Rooms for palm-studded views of a medieval convent or Mount Etna.

Fortunately, there’s a lift to the shore-level bathing area, complete with a saltwater pool and a pontoon for sea dips – although the elevated spa and adjoining indoor/outdoor pool are more tempting on cooler days.
As for the food, there are options for the most exacting diners, including tasting menus at a two Michelin-starred restaurant, barbecues by the water and Asian flavours with a modern twist.
Top tip: Afternoon tea, preferably on the terrace, is something of an institution here, and not to be missed.

A spotlight on Dubai
Cloudless cobalt skies, sea-salted breezes and temperatures in the 20s: winter in Dubai is a far cry from the grey and gloomy version at home. The weather is perfect for everything you might want to do.
Spend happy days with the children lazing on soft golden beaches, whizzing around supersized water parks and checking out the theme parks.
Adventure seekers will be raring to head out into the desert to surf the dunes on a sandboard or ‘bash’ them in a powerful SUV – though you can skydive, bungee jump or even tackle a black run on an indoor ski slope without leaving town.
On balmy Dubai winter days, walking becomes a positive pleasure. For a change from cruising the city’s fabulous megamalls – almost a destination in their own right – you could take a tiny wooden ferryboat across the Creek to the scented, bustling alleyways of the spice, cloth and gold souks or browse the designer shops along the Marina waterfront, with lots of al fresco refreshment stops on the way.
Centara Mirage Beach Resort Dubai
Family fun without the fuss
Designed especially for families, Centara Mirage is brimming with things to keep children amused and happy. It may not be one of Dubai’s more striking buildings, but that hardly matters given the superb beachfront setting and the playful, colourful design of the inside.
Parents will appreciate the age-specific kids’ clubs, the child-friendly menus in all seven restaurants and the treatment rooms for couples in the peaceful spa. As for the younger guests, they’ll be in their element in the sprawling gardens, where watery play areas, a lazy river and waterslides provide hours of fun. If they’ve any energy to spare, there are lots of watersports on offer, including stand-up paddleboarding, and even a child-only section of the spa for them to unwind in.
JA Beach Hotel
For a carefree experience
In extensive leafy grounds (sister properties) beside a private sweep of sand, overlooking a small marina, JA Beach Hotel is a veteran of Dubai’s hotel scene. This graceful all-inclusive resort has been welcoming guests of all ages for more than 40 years – plenty of time to discover the ingredients of a perfect sun-drenched holiday.
The sands of Jebel Ali Beach are a magnet for anyone keen to try their hand at sports such as kitesurfing and kayaking, or just have the occasional paddle between gentle snoozes, while the gardens are large enough to contain a nine-hole golf course. A themed kids’ club sets the grown-ups free to try the spa, while the dining options cover the bases from wood-fired pizza to stylish Asian.

W Dubai - Mina Seyahi
Adults only glamour
The word ‘showstopping’ could have been invented for the W DubaiMina Seyahi, a sleek tower of glass located on the Jumeirah Beach coastline. Inside this adult-only retreat, it’s just as striking, with a design that adds a generous dose of traditional Middle Eastern flourishes to its clean-cut, light-filled spaces.
The mix of opulence, stellar views and fashionable setting has made this somewhere to see and be seen – whether you’re hanging out in the ornate cocktail lounge, the sleek rooftop Japanese restaurant or the buzzing terrace overlooking the sea. Thankfully, the immaculately decorated rooms provide a calmer retreat, as do the spa, infinity pool and private slice of Jumeirah Beach.
Raffles The Palm Dubai
Elegant, opulent and serene
Glittering Venetian chandeliers, gilded walls and carved marble columns: when it comes to sumptuousness, Raffles The Palm doesn’t hold back. The wedding-cake architecture and the equally lavish classic interiors are positively palatial – even King Louis XIV would have approved –and there’s a similarly satisfying plushness to everything from the immaculately pitched service to the wow-factor facilities.
You could spend days drifting elegantly between the 500-metre private beach, the featherbed loungers by the vast pool and the six exquisite restaurants and bars. Venture into the award-winning spa, with its Japanese baths, traditional hammams and cutting-edge treatments, and you may never bring yourself to leave.

Go further
High season in many of our most popular far-flung destinations begins in late autumn and continues throughout the winter months. Planning ahead means you’ll get the best choice, the best deals and have something to look forward to.
Flirting with the blue lagoon
Approaching Kuramathi Maldives by seaplane you’ll get astonishing views of atolls, islands and bright blue waters that no AI could ever match. On this larger Maldivian island, luxuries fill out the days: floating breakfasts, private pools, lobster dinners and spa treatments ending with bubble baths.
With perfect spots to propose and spaces for both child and friend-groups, Kuramathi caters to everyone. The overwater villas are the stuff of fantasies and beach villas exude castaway escape. The Select All Inclusive upgrade hits the ceiling of tastiness, offering you nine à la carte restaurants.
At this sustainably savvy resort you’ll be padding along powder white sands, diving off jetties and swimming in the house reef with sweetlips. Rent a resort GoPro and capture every magical moment.
TOP TIP: Split your stay between Kuramathi and Kandolhu to experience both a large and small island.
7 nights All Inclusive from £2299pp based on selected October 2023 departures on SriLankan Airlines from Heathrow. Save up to £1186 per couple.
Creole cool from every corner
You’ll feel dreamily marooned at adults-only Lagoon Attitude, Mauritius where bar swings, bean bags and boho rooms meet a minimal imprint philosophy: furniture is repurposed from discarded boat sails and blue nets handed out if you want to pay it forward picking up debris out on the snorkelling trail. Couples sip white rum cocktails on sun bleached sands, build up tans kayaking across the lagoon and soak up sunsets with pulse-slowing SUP sessions.
From farm fresh food and sugar cane juices to curated experiences like chef-led cooking classes and musical lessons, this hotel shimmers with island spirit. Dinners are a highlight, especially at Creole-style Kot Nou for Mauritian tapas under twinkling lights.
TOP TIP: Book the family style dinner where selected hotel staff invite you into their home for an authentic evening meal.
7 nights All Inclusive from £1779pp based on selected January, February & March 2024 departures on Air Mauritius from Gatwick. Save up to 15%.

Have your cake and eat it
This Thailand multi-centre rockets you from markets, temples and Thai monks to serenity on the beach. It begins close to all the culture at Sindhorn Midtown Hotel Bangkok, Vignette Collection where a sky-high infinity pool, K-Pop rooftop restaurant and Siamese cocktail-serving Black Cat Bar are waiting. Kids get ball pools, obstacle courses and a telephone line to an all-day popsicle butler.
You’re then spirited away to Koh Samui’s Rocky’s Boutique Resort , a book-reading, pool-hopping beachfront retreat where you can snorkel with sea horses. Top marks go to the restaurant, a très chic ocean-facing French-Med affair.
TOP TIP: Book a sailing, snorkelling and swimming day on Rocky’s longtail boat.
10 nights Room & Breakfast from £2149pp based on selected November 2023 departures on Thai Airways from Heathrow.
A Caribbean love shack to sweep you off your feet
The owner of Keyonna Beach Resort, Antigua has created a stylishly simple couples-only all-inclusive hideaway, eschewing televisions and buffets in favour of beachfront cottages with private pools and à la carte dining fresh from the ocean and garden.
Here you get to know Antigua beyond the flour-white sands and peacock-blue waters, with a fantastic team leading yoga sessions and hikes to Mount Obama. Kayaks and snorkels are complimentary, the peppermint and vanilla massages are heaven and each of the 37 rooms include a Balinese double day bed on the beach.
TOP TIP: Take a yacht to nearby Cades Reef and snorkel with parrot and angel fish.
7 nights All Inclusive from £2399pp based on 12 & 14 December 2023 departures on Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow. Save up to 20%.
Calypso vibes for the whole tribe
You can build your own style of holiday at Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort St Lucia , walking on sunshine and paddle boarding until you’re weak at the knees. Kids run off for ballbashing tennis lessons while you ride horses along the sand or take yoga in hummingbird-filled gardens.
Multi-generational crews, solo parents and 2.4 families will find pizza and chips, shallow-ended pools and movie nights on the beach but also seafood and rum coconuts, in-water hammocks and transformative spa treatments. Then factor in the ocean. The snorkelling and sailing are sensational and the kayaking and windsurfing are free.
TOP TIP: Let one of the hotel’s skilled chefs come to your villa and whip up a gourmet feast.
7 nights All Inclusive from £2249pp based on selected November 2023 departures on British Airways from Gatwick. Save up to £2075 per couple.

Endless family fun or a grown-up side?
Head to a dreamy all-inclusive destination in Mexico for family escapades and love-struck couples. At the other resort Paradisus La Perla – Adults Only – All Inclusive , expect swish sake and tequila bars and glamorous adults-only restaurants and DJs at the main pool.
Guests over 18 years can free-roam the entire complex (except the excluisve Reserve areas which are well worth the upgrade) but everyone wakes up to lagoon-style pools, caster-white sands and Caribbean Sea.
TOP TIP: The hour drive to Tulum’s spectacular beaches and clifftop temples is totally worth it.

A marvellous marine biologist takes you swimming with manta rays and nurse sharks. And the striking dining scene and evening snorkelling set the mood for sweet dreams in an overwater villa with a private pool and a ladder leading into the boundless blue.
In the South Ari Atoll, this is the luxury version of Robinson Crusoe, on one of the Maldives most stunning natural islands.

Sprinkled with star dust from every angle
You come here to disappear. To sleep high above the Andaman Sea in a villa clinging to the clifftop. To glide to the edge of an infinity pool perched among tropical forest. Maybe you drift over to the spa for a foot wash and Thai massage, or you sharpen your knives in the resort’s acclaimed cookery school.
Paresa Phuket is a temple of serenity, a honeymoon hideaway and luxury family treat all at once. Every villa is irresistible but the Spa Pool Suites are something else, with their own open-air treatment sala and huge bathtub sunk into a private pool.
TOP TIP: Book an exclusive dinner on a double day bed floating in the fibre optic lit pool. For proposals, add the firework display.

Stay in a Gold Coast designer beach pad
With its batik ceilings, peacock sculptures and legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa’s tropical modernist stamp, Sri Lanka’s Cinnamon Bentota Beach is a favourite of romantics and families. Restaurants serve up hawker-style feasts and catch-ofthe-day washed down with coconut arrack, and you’re soothed to sleep in breathtaking surrounds where the river, beach and Indian Ocean meet.
There’s nothing boring here: drift from glistening pools to corkscrew palm-dotted sands, watch monkeys cling to fisherman as you boat across Bentota River, or ride wave runners and try out water skiing.
TOP TIP: Add a few nights here after a Golden Triangle multi-centre holiday to cap off the trip of a lifetime.

‘Shamwari’s Kids on Safari scheme mixes exciting game drives and bush walks with on-site playtime and visits to a wildlife rehabilitation centre and big cat sanctuary’.
For the moments spent together
Gather up everyone’s passports and head off on an unforgettable family adventure as the days draw in at home. Chase the summer on a South African safari, get in some autumn beach time in Europe’s more southerly destinations or hop over to the Caribbean for sun-kissed days by the sea.
Fabulous wildlife encounters
Swap the UK’s unpredictable weather for the sunlit days of early autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. We’ve put together a fun-filled 13-day South Africa Family Adventure Self-drive, staying in serviced apartments and welcoming guesthouses, which will introduce you to beautiful landscapes – and their spectacular wild inhabitants.
It starts with three nights in Cape Town, where you can drive your car to the beach to meet the continent’s only penguins or pick from a clutch of optional experiences. You’ll want to take to the water at the next stop, Hermanus; its fertile waters are a magnet for marine life, so you might spot Bryde’s and humpback whales, dolphins and cape fur seals.
At laidback Plettenberg Bay, there are Blue Flag beaches, nature reserves and optional dolphin-watching trips to enjoy before the grand finale: three nights at a family-focused lodge in a private game reserve. Shamwari’s Kids on Safari scheme mixes exciting game drives and bush walks with on-site playtime and visits to a wildlife rehabilitation centre and Born Free big cat sanctuary.
12 nights with selected meals from £4295pp based on a family of 4 on selected March 2024 departures on British Airways from Heathrow. Save up to £1100 per family.

A double dose of sun, sea and sand
Take advantage of Dubai’s great air links to cram two retreats into one winter-sun holiday. Kick off the trip on a slice of private beach at the Sofitel Dubai The Palm , a French-Polynesian-styled bolthole with superb facilities – think six outdoor pools, superb restaurants and an awardwinning spa.
Ramp up the island vibes as you fly on to history-making Kurumba Maldives , the Maldives’ very first private resort. It’s 10 minutes from the airport, so you can be chilling in your family-sized Beach Villa before you know it. Kids and teens will love the clubs that are just for them, and you can find your zen with a couples’ massage by the sea.
Luxury villas for larger tribes
On a leafy 100-acre peninsula nudging into the Caribbean, St James’s Club & Villas is one of Antigua’s much-loved stars, as appealing to honeymooners as it is to families. The idyllic location certainly helps, with a sheltered sandy beach on one side and a wilder one on the other, so water babies of all ages can enjoy anything from gentle paddles to breezy Hobie Cat sailing.
In this all-inclusive haven, younger guests are impressively well-catered for. There’s a complimentary kids’ club and dedicated menus in the restaurants, while room options include villas with two or three bedrooms so everyone gets a private space.
Putting families centre stage
Whether you’re looking for a balmy autumn or spring half-term break or somewhere for a memorable Christmas, Lanzarote ticks all the boxes. Base yourself at Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort , which combines an appealing beachside setting in Playa Blanca and colonial-era looks with an award-winning family focus.
Nowhere is this clearer than in Kikoland, a fairytale children’s adventure area that caters to 0 to 18-year-olds with aplomb – and gives parents time to unwind in the spa. There are kids’ menus in most of the dining venues, which include a casual poolside eatery, and spacious family suites in a dedicated building.
Minimalist looks and maximum fun
A sleek design featuring contemporary art isn’t the first thing that comes to mind for a family break, but Parklane, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa proves that kerb-appeal and children aren’t mutually exclusive. This five-star Cyprus resort, on a Blue Flag beach on the fringes of Limassol, incorporates dedicated zones for different types of guests, so everyone feels cared for.
While the grown-ups enjoy the calm of the spa or the adults-only pool, the children can burn off energy at Park Kidz, a sprawling club set in a pink castle beside a huge watery play area. Kids’ menus and options for more adventurous eaters, meanwhile, ensure stress-free mealtimes.
