Our top tips on how to plan your honeymoon

Planning your honeymoon is a big, exciting task, let’s face it. The thing is, it’s not just a holiday. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that you want to get 100% right. But where to start? Here’s some advice from our Kuoni experts.

When to start

It can take a lot of time and energy to plan your dream honeymoon. There’s so much to think about, and this comes at a time when you’ve also got a wedding to organise. To stop it becoming overwhelming, your best bet is to get in there early. We’re talking 8-12 months before you want to go. That’ll grant you the best pick of hotels and give you access to their early booking discounts.

How to budget for it

Getting value for money is key, whatever you set your budget to. We can help you get the best rates for a stay at one of the world’s best water villas, or let you know which resorts offer complimentary night stays. There’s heaps we can do to make your budget go further.

Upgrade wisely

Upgrade chunks of your honeymoon, rather than the whole thing. Instead of booking first class return flights, we can arrange a one-way upgrade for you, so you can arrive or return home in style. We could also secure you an upgraded room for the last couple of nights of your honeymoon. That way you can end on a high, but don’t have to splash out on the finest room for your entire stay.

Travel in the off season

Places like the Maldives and the Caribbean are just as stunning in the off season, which is around May to November. It may rain a little more at this time of year, but you’re still likely

to get sunny days – and have less competition for the best spot on the beach.

Pick a budget-friendly destination

Don’t ignore destinations closer to home. There’s more to Spain than its golden beaches – go off the beaten track to discover cobbled old town lanes and UNESCO-listed nature reserves. Over in Greece, you’ll find an island for every vibe and budget.

Fu rther afield, Bali and Thailand are excellent choices if you’re after amazing diversity and value (and food). In the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean, going all-inclusive is a thrifty route to take. Kuramathi is one of the Maldives’ most popular resorts and its Select All Inclusive package is one of the best around.

Be flexible with your dates

If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you could benefit from flight and accommodation deals beyond the standard Sunday fortnightly departure.

Create a gift list

The extras

It’s not often in life that you get to feel like a VIP, but that’s exactly how you should feel on your honeymoon. The likelihood of being bumped up to first class at the boarding gate is sadly very slim these days, so to avoid disappointment, leave it with us. We’ve spent time building relationships with airlines, resorts, cruise lines and tour operators around the world, so we’ll work with them to try and bag you special extras wherever possible –from luxury upgrades to complimentary spa treatments in-resort.

What else to consider

Beyond the big decisions like when and where to go on your honeymoon, there are loads of little things to think about, such as the extras that make it memorable and the practical stuff that makes it all run smoothly. Things like having photocopies of important documents, lightweight clothes in your hand luggage for when you arrive in a hot climate, some spare change of local currency in your pocket, depending on where you’re headed.

Your

wedding guests can give you the best gift of all: your first adventure together as newlyweds (it beats a gravy boat). Our gift list service can be a huge help to lower the cost of your honeymoon, and it’s really easy to set up online once you’ve booked. We’ll even send you some announcement cards that you can pop into your wedding invites to let guests know how they can contribute.

We’ve got more tips here:

A room WITH A VIEW

Imagine...you draw back the drapes and let the sunlight flood in to reveal a jaw-dropping view right outside your window. Your own private panorama of the place you’ve been daydreaming about for months.

Inside these amazing hotel rooms-with-a-view, ‘duvet days’ take on a new meaning. Order room service for the best-ever breakfast in bed, get stuck into your to-be-read pile or stargaze from under the covers. Some rooms are so private, you even get an epic view from the bathtub.

Gaze out over a gorge-ous green valley

Viceroy Bali has views to soothe the soul. Perched on the edge of a gorge and cloaked in tropical greenery, this boutique hotel is unbelievably peaceful. When you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve been let in on Bali’s best-kept secret.

Thatched villas have been designed to immerse guests in their surroundings – bag a Deluxe Terrace Villa for your own outdoor infinity pool and overwater balé to float above the spectacular valley below. With the serene setting comes a big focus on wellness. Make time to visit the plush spa for some

pampering or book a traditional Balinese massage in the comfort of your room.

The food in Bali is next level – tasty, super-fresh and nourishing, whether you’re eating at the hotel’s awardwinning treetop restaurant or in one of artsy Ubud’s cool cafés. Town is just a few minutes’ drive away, where you can also go templehopping, cycle through rice paddies and spot mischievous monkeys in the sacred Monkey Forest.

TOP TIP: Break up the journey to Bali with a few days in Kuala Lumpur, where you can hit the modern malls of the KLCC and check out the views from the sky-high Petronas Towers.

Watch the sun set over Santorini’s caldera

Leisurely Champagne breakfasts by the infinity pool, chilled cocktails overlooking the famous Skaros Rock, fiery Santorini sunsets –Grace Hotel, Aubergre Resorts Collection has luxury and romance in spades.

Carved out of a clifftop and set on different levels, this is one of the more secluded options on the island. The vibe is cool and the crisp white colour scheme is superstylish. If you don’t fancy heading into lively Fira (about a mile away)

in the evenings, there’s delicious dining at the restaurant and the bar’s music nights are a nice touch. Each one of the rooms here has a sunset view; they’re sleek and minimalist, leaving the exceptional quality and knock-out views to do the talking. As you’d expect, the VIP Suite with Plunge Pool has a few added extras: a private entrance, a unique lava rock feature and the hotel’s largest terrace.

TOP TIP: Crowds flock daily to Oia, Santorini’s prettiest town, to witness the incredible sunset – head out early to explore.

Look out over the shimmering Aegean Sea

Sweet dreams are made in Greece. It must be something to do with the salty sea air and long hot days. At the lavish Blue Palace, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Crete, this is just for starters.

Overlooking the Gulf of Mirabello, views from this hillside spa resort are something special. Style and charm exude, with curved arches that frame the scene and terrace pools that appear to float mid-air.

Treat yourselves to an Island Luxury Suite; spacious with striking blue décor, a heated pool and of course, those head-turning sea views. There’s more – you’ll have exclusive access to The Haven, where you can feast on breakfasts of Cretan honey, regional cold cuts and local grapes and figs in a jasmine-scented courtyard, as well as your own private gazebo on the beach with goodies delivered by the beach service crew.

TOP TIP: Combine a couple of Greek Islands and turn your honeymoon into an island-hopping adventure.

Wake up on the waterfront in Venice

Check into Sina Centurion Palace , one of Venice’s grandest addresses, for views over the Grand Canal and a wealth of art, architecture and culture on your doorstep. This neo-Gothic palace sits a quick boat ride across the canal from St Mark’s Square and the tourist centre, giving you easy-access to Venice while being away from the crowds. The best-of-both-worlds tick-list continues with the décor; total opulence impresses on the outside, while the inside is full of contemporary conveniences.

For your own private peek at ‘the city of love’, choose a suite with a Grand Canal view. After busy days of sightseeing together, head up to your room, fling open the doors and lose yourselves in the mesmerising bustle of the waterway below.

TOP TIP: If you want to go all-out, skip the flight and travel to Venice on board the opulent Venice SimplonOrient Express.

Wake up to views of Uluru at a one-off Outback retreat

At Uluru, everything you imagine about Outback Australia is real: rustred tracks, vast empty spaces and sacred Aboriginal sites. And there’s no contest when it comes to where to stay on your honeymoon.

From above, Longitude 131° looks like a cluster of mini meringue peaks. This dreamy desert basecamp is a series of white-roofed ‘tents’ that outrank many five-star hotel rooms, where a flick of a switch to raise the blinds is all that lies between your bed and spectacular views of this natural wonder. You’ll sit mesmerised at sunrise and sunset – just when you think you’ve got the perfect photo, Uluru’s colours shift again.

During your stay, make the most of incredible included experiences such as guided Uluru base walk tours, hikes through Kata Tjuta’s Walpa Gorge and dinner under the stars listening to stories and songs of an ancient culture at Table 131°.

TOP TIP: Longitude 131° is part of the exclusive Luxury Lodges of Australia collection. Talk to us about putting together an epic antipodean adventure for your honeymoon that includes more of their extraordinary hotels.

Splash out on front-row ocean views

Kandolhu Maldives takes all the best bits of an Indian Ocean escape and turns things up a notch; think beautiful Maldivian-style villas on a tiny picture-perfect island, fantastic snorkelling straight from the beach (bring your GoPro so you can film reef sharks and turtles chomping on coral) and sunset cruises. And for just 30 rooms, there are a whopping five à la carte restaurants.

You’ll be thrilled with whichever room you choose. Check out the Ocean Pool Villas for sunset views, your own private infinity plunge pool and a bathtub made for sipping sparkling wine in (included with the Ultimate Inclusions package) while gazing out over the lagoon. You can even step straight into the view: hop down from your private deck into the clearest waters you’ve ever seen and keep an eye out for dolphins frolicking in the distance.

TOP TIP: If a full week or two in a top-end Ocean Pool Villa pushes you over budget, stay in a Beach Villa and switch for your last few nights or consider a twin-centre with a 4★ island such as Kuramathi Maldives.

Escape to a secret seaview hideaway

Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge is not Mauritius as you know it. At this intimate mountain hideaway in the Black River Gorges National Park, you’ll discover tropical gardens, lofty mountains and hidden waterfalls alongside the island’s sugar-white beaches. There’s heart-felt authenticity here – original art, locally crafted furniture, inspirational quotes, fruit trees planted by the owners’ daughter – goes hand-in-hand with the warm welcome. A help-yourself bar and open-air candlelit dinners showcasing seasonal local produce add to the charm.

20 bespoke TV-free lodges are dotted throughout the peaceful gardens, each one thoughtfully named after an important aspect of Mauritian culture. Book a Seaview Pool Suite to look out towards emerald mountains and turquoise seas from the comfort of your fourposter bed. Bliss.

TOP TIP: Split your stay in Mauritius between Lakaz Chamarel and a hotel on the beach.

The ultimate indoor/outdoor suite

Walls are overrated when you have unbeatable views of Saint Lucia’s iconic Pitons. At Jade Mountain – a Bond-like masterpiece with impressive eco-credentials – huge suites are wonderfully open plan with no fourth wall, so you can listen to birdsong and feel the warm tropical breeze all day long. You’ll never stay anywhere quite like it. The open-air suites – known as ‘sanctuaries’ – are on an epic scale and a show-stealing view is guaranteed. Having a private infinity pool to enjoy it from is part of the wow factor – plump for a Sun Sanctuary that has 270-degree views or a Galaxy Sanctuary at the very top of the hotel.

Jade Mountain also has an exclusive guests-only restaurant, a chocolatemaking lab (for indulgence) and yoga (for balance). Down at Caribbean Sea level, spend your newlywed days diving in clear waters, kicking back on powderwhite beaches and following nature trails through the rainforest.

See the Taj Mahal from your bedroom window

There’s nowhere else where you can enjoy such exclusive views of the Taj Mahal. At the Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, every single room looks out onto this world-famous monument to love.

This is the closest hotel to the UNESCO-listed Taj Mahal, whose romantic back story – a palatial mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal – is legendary. Be warned: walking into your room and seeing this ivory-white masterpiece in real life from your own private viewpoint just might make you tear up. It’s a heart-stirring feeling.

The style is everything you’d hope for from a luxury Indian resort; inspired by Moorish and grand Mughal palace architecture, expect white columns, gold domes and crystal chandeliers, along with Oberoi’s signature stand-out service. After a visit to the Taj, kick back by the pool or head to the spa for an Ayurvedic treatment.

TOP TIP: We recommend at least two nights here as part of any tailormade itinerary that takes in the very best of India.

Gaze across the savannah from your sunken daybed

Lemala Mpingo Ridge Lodge ’s bigsky setting gives you goosebumps. You can see for miles across the rolling plains at this luxury tented camp in Tarangire, one of Tanzania’s wilder and lesser-visited parks. As you stand on your private deck and soak up the show-stopping view, it’s hard not to think of that moment in

The Lion King when Mufasa tells Simba about “everything the light touches”.

Daytime adventures come in the form of safari drives to spot plains game, big cats and elephants (it’s not unusual to see over 100 in a day), then there are exciting night drives, bush dinners under starry skies and sundowners around a roaring campfire.

Just 15 tents share this astounding view. Each one has an indulgent outdoor tub and sunken daybed for lion-like lazing in the heat of the day, plus a king-size bed where you’ll drift off to the sounds of the wild. The rooms face east, so keep the curtains open and you’ll wake up to a golden sunrise.

TOP TIP: Add on the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater for an all-round safari experience, then hit the beach in Zanzibar, where the dazzling soft sands give the Maldives a run for its money.

Sleep up in the treetops

Make your childhood fantasies come true at Hapuku Lodge , on New Zealand’s South Island; a tranquil eco-retreat on a 1500acre deer farm which has five luxury treehouses as part of its accommodation. Perched 30-feet up in the native treetop canopy, you’re closer to the snow-capped mountain views and in amongst the birds – look out for the fluttering Piwakawaka (New Zealand fantail).

Snuggle up by the log burner and look out through the wide windows

to the dramatic mountain and Pacific Ocean backdrop, or on balmier evenings, enjoy the views together from the spa bath. You’re just a 15-minute drive from the coastal resort of Kaikoura where, depending on the time of year, dolphins and whales can be spotted in the inky blue waters. There’s plenty of other action too: borrow one of the lodge’s mountain bikes, learn to surf at nearby Mangamaunu surf break, kayak around the inlets, or learn about the native flora on a botanical tour.

Search for wildlife from your private plunge pool

Even when you’re deep in the wild bushveld, there’s no need to rough it on safari. Wi-Fi, air-con, a Nespresso machine and a private pool all await you at Sindile Safari Lodge at Shamwari Game Reserve , a sleek and secluded South African getaway that’s exclusively for adults. The camp has a beautiful setting overlooking the Bushman’s River and the nine raised tents are positioned to make the most of the views. Shamwari is a Big Five reserve, so you can hope to see plenty of wildlife, and there are two Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries that you can visit on site. The ultimate way to end the day’s adventures? Sinking into the warm waters of your heated plunge pool with an icy drink, seeing which you can spot first: an elephant or giraffe.

TOP TIP: If you like the idea of a more independent honeymoon, hire a car in Cape Town and take your time driving along the Garden Route to reach Shamwari on the Eastern Cape.

Sleep between tropical forest and the ocean

The island of Praslin is the Seychelles as you’ve imagined it: white-sand beaches framed by granite boulders and backed by tropical forest. Stylish all-pool-villa resort Raffles Seychelles puts you at the heart of it all, in 40 lush hillside acres with world-famous Anse Lazio beach just a 10-minute drive away.

Stay here and you’ll wake up to total peace and privacy. Each huge villa comes with a plunge pool and your choice of a tropical forest or farreaching ocean outlook – the views are so inspiring that the resort provides an easel and sketch pad for you to capture the scene.

The stand-out facility is the spa, where there are views of boulderstrewn Anse Takamaka from the treatment pavilions. Need a little more action? Hop in a helicopter for a bird’s-eye view, go island-hopping to meet giant tortoises and perfect your SUP-ing out on the glistening waters.

Float high above the Andaman Sea

In Sanskrit, Paresa means ‘heaven of all heavens’ – you could easily get used to the high life at boutique Paresa Phuket , on the island’s sought-after ‘Millionaire’s Row’. Sparkling wine with breakfast, a super-exclusive setting way above Kamala Beach, access to a swish beach club and the hotel’s soaring clifftop position gives you something rare in Phuket: total peace. Wake up to dazzling views of the Andaman Sea, no matter which room you choose, and feel like you’re floating above the ocean in your private pool.

Friendly staff can arrange unforgettable experiences for you at the resort, in the jungle or on the beach. You might like to book a romantic dinner under the stars, go SUP boarding along the coast, trek to ancient temples or learn the secrets of Thai curry at the on-site cooking school.

Live the honeymoon high life

Turn up the luxury dial full blast. We’re talking places where huge villas have private infinity pools, the Champagne flows at breakfast and ingenious facilities are off-limits to the rest of the world.

How about living the Italian dream on the Amalfi Coast, dining underwater in the Maldives or schmoozing with celebs in Barbados? Our push-the-boat-out honeymoons ooze style and sophistication; these are the hotels where exclusive experiences, fabulous fine dining and VIP treatment await you.

An Italian affair

You’ll fall in love again in Ravello, a medieval mountain town on the Amalfi Coast with pinch-me beauty and classic Italian charm. The stunning views and lemon-tree lanes make a pretty stage for a honeymoon photoshoot and the swanky boltholes here encapsulate l a dolce vita.

Live out an Italian fantasy at Palazzo Avino, a former 12th-century private villa nicknamed the ‘Pink Palace’. Start the day with breakfast Bellinis, then head to the Clubhouse by the Sea for lunch and a refreshing swim. After dark, delve into a menu of mouth-watering Italian fare in the Michelin-starred restaurant, Rosselinis, then round off the night in the Lobster & Martini Bar, which has a creative display of cocktails – the ‘Loren’ comes garnished with a rose spritzed with Chanel N°5.

A Mauritian icon with its own private island

It’s no wonder Mauritius ranks high on honeymoon wish lists, with its coral-dotted coastlines and oh-so-romantic resorts. Our top ultra-luxe pick on the island is the Shangri-La Le Touessrok Mauritius . This on-point retreat has an up-to-date take on paradise – think sofas made from sand, eclectic restaurants and a vibey beach club –yet still has the elegance and legendary service of the Shangri-La brand.

Every room here has an ocean view, so you can wake up to vistas of those glorious blue waters. Wind down with an ayurvedic massage in the spa, sink a few smoked cocktails in the Rum and Tiki bar or sail over to the private island for a day in a beach cabana, where your butler will bring gourmet goodies and chilled wine as you soak up the sun.

TOP TIP: Book your honeymoon with us and we’ll throw in a free dinner-for-two on Ilot Mangenie, the resort’s private island.

Unwind in a tropical Thai paradise

It’s not every holiday you get to dine inside a fairy-tale ‘grotto’ on the beach and swim in a lagoon pool beneath towering limestone karsts. Secluded between dramatic cliffs, coconut groves and the emerald-green Andaman Sea on a peninsula that can only be reached by boat, Rayavadee in Krabi is a one-of-a-kind resort.

Sensitively designed to fit in with its spectacular setting, the pavilion-like accommodation is dotted throughout the lush grounds in the style of a Thai village. Romance comes easy thanks to enchanting restaurant setups, couple’s spa treatments and spellbinding sunsets, while activities focus on the otherworldly outdoors with rock climbing, snorkelling, island-hopping and the must-do Railay Viewpoint Hike.

A spa sanctuary on the Andaman Sea

Backed by the lush jungle of Dragon Crest National Park and with views out across the Andaman Sea to the limestone karst islands that rise out of Phang Nga Bay, there’s no such thing as a bad angle at Banyan Tree Krabi

Banyan Tree’s spas are legendary and this resort’s tranquil and ultra-modern wellness retreat, The Rainforest, is up there with the best. It’s like its own resort, with a hydrotherapy circuit including hot and cold outdoor plunge pools, a rain walk, sauna and ice fountain. Honeymoon dinners don’t come more romantic than at the resort’s Bird’s Nest restaurant, where private pods are perched on platforms in the treetops peeping out to the glittering sea.

Get VIP treatment(s) in Cyprus

Grab your tiara because Anassa – the Greek word for Queen – is a honeymoon-worthy hotel where you’ll get the royal treatment. This Leading Hotel of the World has whispers of Grecian glamour in every corner, from the residences named after Greek Gods and Goddesses to the award-winning Romanesque spa with its thalassotherapy pools.

In the chic dining venues, flavours are as fresh and local as they come. Highlights include Helios, the upscale restaurant with al fresco dining under olive trees, and the candlelit cavern Basiliko where executive chef David Goodridge dishes up seafood dishes like Alaskan king crab and kombu-cured seabass. Head to the sea-facing Armonia Bar at sunset for Cypriot tipples and watch the sky light up in fiery hues over the Akamas mountains.

Water Villa goals

Dining by candlelight to the soundtrack of waves, diving into rainbow reefs and retreating to a dreamy villa over the water: the Maldives is the ultimate start to married life. Many islands feature those sought-after villas on stilts above the ocean, but the Water Pool Villas at swish Milaidhoo Maldives are something else. These huge hideaways feature a curved infinity pool, a plush daybed and a huge deck with steps leading to the sparkling lagoon.

This is the perfect peaceful island for a grown-up getaway, where your days can be spent tucking into incredible food (the creamy lobster curry is a must-try), enjoying total privacy and appreciating authentic barefoot luxury.

TOP TIP: If you can bear to leave your villa, add on the ‘Sleeping Under the Stars’ experience. Your butler will serve up a four-course meal on a secluded sandbank before you cosy up on a canopied bed to doze off under a blanket of stars.

Hang with the Hollywood set

Search ‘celebs in Barbados’ and you’ll scroll through photos of A-listers papped in front of Sandy Lane ’s iconic pink sun loungers. This world-famous hotel on the island’s ‘Platinum Coast’ is the most exclusive address in the Caribbean. It’s good enough for The Beckhams, Vera Wang and Hugh Grant… and rumour has it that Jay-Z even popped the question to Beyoncé on the beach.

You’re in for the VIP treatment, too – Sandy Lane’s service is next level, although in true Bajan style, it’s refreshingly unstuffy. Sip cognacs with the high rollers in the Monkey Bar, work your way through a menu of delicious desserts at the indulgent Sunday brunch and unwind in the spa’s hydrotherapy pools.

TOP TIP: Book the romance package and you’ll get a load of goodies included, such as a bottle of Champagne and chocolate-dipped gold-leaf strawberries, a couple’s massage and a turtle trip for two.

The best in barefoot luxury

Emerald Faarufushi Resort & Spa is barefoot luxury at its best. From the moment you arrive at this sustainably savvy island, you’ll kick off your shoes and feel a wave of zen wash over you. Surrounded by a beautiful 100-hectare lagoon, you can happily spend your time here snorkelling with tropical fish, dining by the water’s edge and gazing out to the Indian Ocean from your villa’s private deck.

Although it just opened in 2022, Emerald Faarufushi is already scoring high on TripAdvisor; guests rave about the sleek villas, above-and-beyond service and deluxe all-inclusive package. The resort champions excellent international food, demonstrated in the diversity and quality of its restaurants such as the churrasco-style barbecue at Carnivorous, where you can tuck into sizzling steaks, and the Beach Club Grill for boat-fresh seafood.

TOP TIP: Combine Emerald Faarufushi with its cool sister resort Emerald Maldives for an idyllic twin-centre escape.

Up the romance in seductive Santorini

Backdrops don’t come much more romantic than Santorini’s tumbling white-washed towns, dramatic caldera and glittering Aegean Sea. Mystique, A Luxury Collection Hotel is the cream of the Cycladic crop and its whole vibe depicts the enchanting feel of the island. Expect cave-like suites, infinite seascapes and superb dining – the secret wine cave that’s over 150 years old will become your new favourite spot.

Next-level luxury at Dubai’s slick new showstopper

Atlantis The Royal’s star-studded grand opening party was the event of 2023, with over 1000 celebs celebrating in serious style as Queen Bey brought the house down. This shiny new ultra-luxe resort is the sister of world-famous Atlantis

The Palm and it’s set to become every bit as iconic.

Let’s start with the architecture: bold Tetris-style blocks that seem to defy gravity and add a new dimension to Dubai’s dazzling skyline. Then there’s the entertainment. With highenergy nightlife venues plus a guests-only rooftop infinity pool lounge ft. DJ sets, VIP cabanas and knock-out views, this is a place where the good times roll.

You’ll also get to eat at some of the finest restaurants in the world, like Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, where historical British cuisine is plated with playful twists, and Nobu by the Beach for innovative Japanese-Peruvian dishes. Sleep it all off in a spacious suite – bag a Sky Pool Villa Suite to swim in your own soaring glass infinity pool.

Over-and-under-water indulgence

You might recognise some of the aquatic architecture on Conrad Maldives Rangali Island ; it’s home to two of the world’s undersea firsts: the Muraka, a Bond-style residence with a bedroom beneath the waves and Ithaa, a fine-dining restaurant sunk five metres below the surface.

Here, you’ll experience two Maldives islands in one. On Rangali-Finolhu, the hip and lively sibling, you’ll find novel dining venues, namely the show-stopping Japanese grill and the sand-floored Cheese and Wine Bar. Over at Rangali, the pace runs a little slower, with yoga, quiet zones and meditation on the menu. Go snorkelling in the marine-rich South Ari Atoll in search of sharks, rays and turtles, or head out to dive with the ‘whale shark whisperer’ (seasonally) for encounters with the Indian Ocean’s gentle giants.

Blissful beach days in Bali

Bali is a firm favourite with romantics thanks to its knock-your-socks-off scenery and extraordinary hotels. The Oberoi Beach Resort, Bali is a top contender for a spiritual stay by the sea. Go all out with a Luxury Oceanview Pool Villa and you’ll have a secluded garden, al fresco dining pavilion and large pool all to yourselves.

The resort’s serene setting – gardens flowing with frangipani flowers and Balinese temples, lotus ponds and a tiffany blue pool among water lilies – feels a world away from the buzz of nearby Seminyak. Yet, it’s just a short walk to the town’s trendy beach bars and restaurants. For dining on your doorstep, head to Kura Kura restaurant where we highly recommend the spicy catch-of-the-day, best served with a crisp white from the wine list.

Responsible wildlife viewing is essential for us at Kuoni. Each of the hotels we feature has signed up to our Responsible Promise and we work closely with conservation and community-based wildlife programmes around the world.

On safari in Africa: the best wildlife viewing on the planet

There’s a big warning that comes with a safari honeymoon: the wildlife is so extraordinary, you’ll probably pay more attention to the animals than each other.

Maybe you’ll bump into a leopard slinking through the grass at dawn, spot a new-born giraffe finding its legs as it gallops across the plains, or see lions roaming the runway as your tiny plane comes in to land. This is their world and we’re just visitors.

On a Kuoni safari, it’s about minimum people, maximum wildlife. Think hideaway camps, exclusive Jeep rides out on the rolling plains and romantic experiences – like soaring above the sun-blazed savannah to scout out cheetahs and rhinos from a hot-air balloon, then landing in the middle of the bush where, out of nowhere, a Champagne breakfast appears.

How about a sleep-out in a luxury treehouse under a blanket of stars at Lion Sands Game Reserve , or watching wildebeest, zebras and giraffes from the bubbles of your private hot tub at Serengeti Bushtops? And let’s address the elephant in the room. At secluded Little Governors’ – a boutique bush camp with an astounding big cat location and our top pick for honeymooners in the Maasai Mara – Blossom the elephant often drops in for breakfast.

‘Interact with these gentle beasts as you walk through the jungle by their side, learn more about their behaviour and biology’.

A sleepover with elephants in Thailand’s jungle

Imagine glamping at a luxury resort in the jungle and waking up to magical views of three different countries, the Mekong River… and elephants watching over you. Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort

takes the bucket-list entry of ‘time with elephants in Thailand’ and turns up the dial. ‘Anantara’s conservation camp is home to more than 20 rescued orphaned and abandoned elephants and the mahouts who take care of them’. At this immersive once-in-a-lifetime retreat, which sits surrounded by haze-shrouded jungle in Northern Thailand with views across to Laos and Myanmar, you can come face to trunk with elephants in their natural habitat and watch the roaming herds from dawn ’til dusk from your very own ‘jungle bubble’: a raised dome room furnished with a comfy king-size bed.

Adventure activities and colourful creatures in Costa Rica

You’re guaranteed some action on a Costa Rica honeymoon. This is a country of adventure activities, where you can cruise jungle waterways, go white-water rafting, hike to tumbling waterfalls and zip-line through the rainforest canopy. In its lush interior, mist clings to the treetops and all sorts of unique wildlife – macaws, hummingbirds, sloths and bright-billed toucans – flit (or in the sloth’s case, inch) through the jungle.

‘Before you leave, hit the beach and relax on stunning white sands with just sun-bathing iguanas and capuchin monkeys for company’. The ethereal cloud forest of Monteverde is a special place to tiptoe over hanging bridges

and listen to a soundtrack of birdsong and jungle calls. Stay amidst it all at Senda Monteverde . This dreamy mountain lodge feels super remote, but just 15 minutes away in Monteverde Town you’ll find great little coffee shops and craft beer houses. A few hours north at the base of the Arenal volcano, adultsonly boutique hotel Nayara Springs is also surrounded by tropical wildlife. Extra reasons to come here include the flavour-rich Relais & Châteaux fine-dining and zen villas with springheated pools.

Before you leave, hit the beach and relax on stunning white sands with just sun-bathing iguanas and capuchin monkeys for company. Pure bliss — or as the Costa Ricans prefer: pura vida. If you haven’t heard this phrase (literally ‘pure life’) before, you’ll never forget it after travelling around this captivating country.

Spot grizzly bears from a floating lodge in Canada

In British Columbia, nearly everything comes with a vivid twist of nature, an epic backdrop or inviting waters. Deep in the Great Bear Rainforest, Knight Inlet Lodge has all three with bells on. You can only reach this indigenous-owned floating lodge by floatplane, and it’s where adventurers come to explore the great outdoors, embrace a nomadic existence for a few days and enjoy the very best wild bear-spotting opportunities.

‘Keep your eyes peeled at all times: it’s not unusual to get a bear sighting through the windows of the guestrooms’.

Bear-viewing tours are led by expert guides who know the area inside out and can help increase your chances of seeing a grizzly on its own turf. Take a tracking tour to look out for bear signs and follow in their footprints, or

drift quietly through the calm waters in a sea kayak to spot bears foraging along the shore. Keep your eyes peeled at all times: it’s not unusual to get a bear sighting through the windows of the guestrooms. If you’re planning an autumn honeymoon you’ve got an added reason to come. This is when you can head up to special viewing perches to see the bears swiping for salmon in nearby rivers.

Safari (but not as you know it) in Botswana

What’s so special about Botswana that it deserves a separate safari mention? With mokoro trips in the delta, sunset cruises along the river and lodges so remote you must fly in a small plane to reach them, this is safari but not as you know it.

‘Chobe National Park, lions roam the plains and huge herds of elephants wade through the Chobe River’.

In the Okavango Delta, touch down at an intimate island camp like Camp Okavango, where guests often hear hippos grazing beneath their suite. Drift through the winding waterways in a traditional mokoro canoe, navigating past hippos and crocodiles, and go on guided walking safaris on a nearby island. If you’re still feeling daring, choose to sleep under the stars at the lodge’s sleep-out deck.

A scenic flight away in the Moremi Game Reserve, the big draw is endangered wild dogs (also look out for rare species such as the swamp-dwelling sitatunga antelope and the redcoated lechwe), while over in Chobe National Park, lions roam the plains and huge herds of elephants wade through the Chobe River.

In Chobe, you’re close to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Victoria Falls is quite possibly the world’s most beautiful waterfall, where waters crash down into the

gorge far below and billowing clouds of mist can be seen from more than 10 miles away. It’s an easy hop across the Botswana/Zimbabwe border for a romantic rainbow-filled end to your honeymoon – stay at Ilala Lodge to dine under the stars and see the spray from your terrace. Go down under in Australia’s remarkable reefs

Australia is a wildlife heavyweight. Its native species reads like an A to Z (OK, B to W) of amazing animals: hop around the country and you’ll spot everything from bilbies and dingoes to kangaroos, koalas, quokkas, wallabies and wombats.

The reef’s most northern resort, Lizard Island featured in the landmark TV series, Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough and its world-leading research station will give you a behind-the-scenes insight into coral reef research and education. ➤

‘Tucked among the sand dunes in Cape Range National Park, remote Sal Salis has got to be Australia’s best glamping experience’. But that’s just scratching the surface. How about seeing one of the seven natural wonders of the world on your honeymoon and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef? This giant coral reef system has a mind-boggling chain of nearly 3000 reefs and 900 rainforest-clad islands – its showstopping swirls are visible from space. And it hosts a staggering amount of marine life including reef sharks, green sea turtles, dugongs, rays and humpback whales.

The reef’s most northern resort, Lizard Island featured in the landmark TV series, Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough and its world-leading research station will give you a behind-the-scenes insight into coral reef research and education. On this private island,

the 24 powdery beaches, lagoon and 1000 acres of national park are all just for you and your fellow guests. ‘It’s not often that you find a sweet spot like this, where you can bask on beautiful soft sands with the Ningaloo Reef just paddling distance away’.

Over in Western Australia, the Coral Coast is peppered with pristine beaches that have somehow slipped under the tourist radar. This is the home of the Great Barrier Reef’s rival: Ningaloo Reef. Fewer people have heard of it, but as a World Heritage Listed fringing reef (one that grows near the coastline), its marine life is even more accessible than the Great Barrier’s, so you can glide straight into the

watery world of turtles, manta rays, humpback whales and whale sharks.

Tucked among the sand dunes in Cape Range National Park, remote Sal Salis has got to be Australia’s best glamping experience. It’s not often that you find a sweet spot like this, where you can bask on beautiful soft sands with the Ningaloo Reef just paddling distance away, spot kangaroos and rock wallabies along wilderness trails, see eagles soar overhead, watch humpbacks offshore, and snorkel with tropical fish and turtles from the beach. All of this comes with the smallest footprint – Sal Salis is serious about sustainability.

For the ultimate wildlife experience, swim with those gentle giants, the whale sharks. Whale shark season is March to August, so this is the perfect bucket-lister if you’re having a spring or summer wedding.

Sail the Greek Islands

Scattered across the Aegean and Ionian seas, Greece’s easy-going towns and secluded bays make island-hopping a breeze. There’s something enchanting about zipping across the glistening waters with salty skin and windswept hair – even a ferry journey is more romantic here.

The long golden beaches are the big draw, but there are also mighty ruins, olive groves and pocket-sized fishing villages. Let a speedboat whisk you away to a hidden cove to spend a sun-soaked afternoon waiting for catch-ofthe-day to be served, or dock off the coast of a beach that can only be reached by boat to snorkel in the warm waters.

‘There’s a lot to see and do on pint-sized Mykonos. Little Venice, a quarter in the capital Chora, is one of the most photographed towns in Europe’.

Greece has some of the Med’s sunniest islands, so expect beautiful bright days ideal for relaxing and exploring. Then there’s the food. You’re guaranteed a taste of that spectacular Mediterranean diet: tuck into the freshest seafood, zingy Greek salads, sun-ripened veg and plenty of souvlaki skewers.

For classic Greek romance with a side of glitz and glam, twin Mykonos and Santorini

There’s a lot to see and do on pint-sized Mykonos. Little Venice, a quarter in the capital

Chora, is one of the most photographed towns in Europe, filled with medieval houses teetering on the edge of the sea. Come here for art galleries, gorgeous lunch spots and a walk to the famous windmills. Over on Santorini, the tumbling white-washed villages and blue-domed churches are best explored from honeymoon favourite Grace Santorini, where the sunsets over the caldera are magical. And even from these megastar islands, you can still reach lesser-visited neighbouring isles with a totally different pace and vibe.

‘Catch the ferry to Skopelos – still having a Mamma Mia moment thanks to its starring role in the 2008 rom-com’.

The charming Sporades Islands , scattered off Greece’s eastern coast, offer a more low-key honeymoon experience. Here, it’s about sailing to tiny fishing villages and swathes of unspoilt sand, keeping your eyes peeled for the next secluded cove to come into sight. Fly in to Skiathos, which has a whopping 65 beaches, hilltop monasteries and pine-clad trails leading far into the forest, as well as Skiathos Town where traditional tavernas and cool cocktail bars line the waterfront. Then catch the ferry to Skopelos – still having a Mamma Mia moment thanks to its starring role in the 2008 rom-com. Finish up on Alonissos; this rugged green island is largely undeveloped and super

chilled. It’s part of the National Marine Park of Alonissos, which protects flora and fauna including wild olive and juniper trees, the monk seal and various species of dolphin.

Beyond Bali’s beaches

Indonesia is a honeypot of romantic hotels, so it would be a shame to limit yourselves to just one. Start your island-hopping honeymoon in Bali , the deservedly hyped-up headline act of this island nation. For the sun-worshipping set, there are golden sands and vibey beach clubs, and it’s easy enough to visit temples and cycle through rice paddies from the beach resorts. To really make the most of your stay, though, jump around.

On the quieter east coast, Candi Beach Resort & Spa is hidden away in towering coconut palms and has a private white-sand beach (one of the few on the island). As well as being a beautiful place to unwind, it’s also a stop-off point for Bali’s lesser-visited neighbours.

Settle in for a fun journey on the boat from Padang Bai to Lombok , where you’ll find wide open spaces, quieter beaches and plenty of outdoor activities. There’s just one main beach resort – laid-back Senggigi, set on a sweeping bay between two headlands. Stay at small and chic Sudamala Resort Senggigi for stylish suites and to watch the dramatic sunsets over

Bali’s volcanoes. The ultimate honeymoon adventure on Lombok is a testing trek to the summit of Mount Rinjani where, on a clear morning, you can see a glorious blue-green crater lake.

‘If you can’t chill out here, you’ll struggle to do it anywhere’.

It’s just a 20-minute speedboat ride from Lombok to tiny Gili Meno, the prettiest and least developed of the Gili Islands. Gili Meno gives a taste of what some of Thailand’s islands might have been like many moons ago. This rustic, bohemian island is car-free and it’s perfect for lounging on the coral sands, snorkelling with hawksbill and green sea turtles, and enjoying ice-cold beers as the sun goes down. Play castaway at Mahamaya , a boutique bolthole with stylish pools, a distinct character (there are quotes from Marilyn Monroe and Mohammed Ali on the walls) and a strong eco ethos. In the evenings, bag a table on the beach at the water’s edge and dine by the light of cute hanging lanterns. If you can’t chill out here, you’ll struggle to do it anywhere.

Flavours of the Caribbean

Jewel-like islands where you can hike, dive and lie on white-sand beaches all in the same day; the rhythmic sound of steel drum beats; rum

punch delivered direct to your sun lounger –life in the Caribbean is famously laid-back, but each island has its own character and style.

‘Over on the islands of the Grenadines – unspoilt and sufficiently inaccessible so it can stay that way – it’s all about a serene Caribbean experience’. Pair up Barbados and the Grenadines to see the best of both sides. Birthplace of rum and big on personality, Barbados is a firm favourite for its mouth-watering food, dazzling beaches and social spots where you can chat with friendly locals. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to luxe hotels – go all out with a stay at the A-listers’ favourite, Sandy Lane , where it’s all white-glove service, high-end dining and romantic walks along the sand, or hang out at the cool and contemporary O2 Beach Club & Spa by Ocean Hotels . Go for an elevated couple’s treatment at the 8th-floor spa and enjoy the ocean backdrop of dreams.

Over on the emerald-clad islands of the Grenadines – unspoilt and sufficiently inaccessible so it can stay that way – it’s all about a serene Caribbean experience. Switch off at a retreat like Palm Island Resort & Spa , a 135-acre private island paradise where you can go kayaking to spot turtles in the mornings and then sway the afternoons away in a hammock.

For all-out romance and lush green landscapes, Dominica and Saint Lucia are the perfect match. Saint Lucia is the Caribbean’s cover star: the iconic Pitons are a jaw-dropping backdrop to lush mountains and palm-fringed bays. See it in style and enjoy private Piton gazing from one of the best hotels in the world, Jade Mountain . This iconic bolthole has just 29 suites dotted around the hillside, each with an unique open air concept to make the most of some pretty unbeatable views.

‘The Caribbean is one part of the world where the views from the water are just as good as the ones on land’.

An island-hop away in Dominica, you’ll find an authentic slice of paradise that’s more Jurassic Park than fly and flop. The natural landscape is the star here, with forested peaks, pristine beaches and sprawling coconut plantations. And the beauty isn’t just surface deep; underwater, there’s a world of dramatic corals, shipwrecks and colourful marine life.

‘There are very few cars here – bicycles are the main mode of transport. La Digue is home to Anse Source d’Argent, the Seychelles’ poster child beach with its towering granite boulders. Visit at sunset when the rocks glow pink’.

With so much variety on offer, a visit to the Seychelles is certainly not a case of once you’ve seen one island, you’ve seen them all. It’s easy to get around and you could combine any number of islands, but it’s hard to beat Mahé, Praslin & La Digue . Start on lively Mahé, home to the nation’s capital Victoria, for an authentic insight into Seychellois life. Boutique STORY Seychelles is the place to stay for location, location, location. It’s just 10 minutes from the capital’s energy-packed markets, five minutes from lush Morne Seychelles National Park, and fronts Mahé’s best beach, Beau Vallon, which is a dream for watersports.

Hop over to wonderfully diverse Praslin and the serene Coco de Mer & Black Parrot Suites ,

a delightful hideaway which blends perfectly with its rugged surroundings, before heading to La Digue, where village life exists at a slower pace. There are very few cars here – bicycles are the main mode of transport. La Digue is home to Anse Source d’Argent, the Seychelles’ poster child beach with its towering granite boulders. Visit at sunset when the rocks glow pink. Rustic-chic Le Domaine de l’Orangeraie is hands down our favourite honeymoon resort on La Digue – hotels and settings don’t come much more romantic: it sits on a steep hillside draped in greenery teeming with birds, overlooking a pretty-as-a-picture beach.

Planet worth: sustainable luxury

It’s cool to be kind. Sustainable travel is complicated, but thanks to the long-term actions of eco-conscious resorts around the globe (and more recent efforts from those who’ve had a wake-up call), travelling ‘better’ is easier than ever before.

So how do you see through the greenwashing when ‘eco’ has basically become a buzzword?

It’s all about measurable actions. See if a hotel has an annual sustainability report, check for internationally recognised certification or look for specific details about the social, environmental and economic initiatives it supports.

From ditching single-use plastics and recycling waste to supporting communities and conservation projects, these are the hotels (and destinations) leading the way in luxury travel that won’t cost the Earth.

The Azores: the world’s first sustainable tourism archipelago

You’ll be familiar with the concept of sustainable hotels, but how about an entire sustainable destination? Welcome to The Azores, a remarkable cluster of islands off the coast of Portugal that’s setting the bar in sustainable tourism.

Situated over 800 miles from the mainland, the Azores is a nine-island autonomous region of Portugal often compared to Hawaii or Iceland due to its volcanic backdrop, geothermal wonders and wildlife-rich waters. But this Atlantic archipelago is unique. There’s no other place where tea and wine are produced side by side or where you can hike in the morning, recuperate in hot springs in the afternoon and dine on Cozido das Furnas (a volcano-cooked stew) once the sun sets. And there’s no other string of islands that is a certified EarthCheck Sustainable Destination, as awarded by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

The Azores scores high on protecting nature and the environment (a whopping 92% of the landscape is classified as a green area and 39% is protected habitat), renewable energy (currently standing at about 40% with big plans to go higher) and cultural identity (a blend of Portuguese traditions and local culture

influenced by the islanders’ deeply held faith).

On Sao Miguel, the largest of the nine islands, you’ll find deep crater lakes, clearwater coastal lagoons and the Furnas Valley, where geothermic-heated springs bubble into bathing pools. Stay at a rustic-luxe resort like Santa Barbara Eco Beach Resort, where being at harmony with nature comes first, or sleep half-hidden amongst the trees at Terra Nostra Garden Hotel , a classy retreat with a geothermal pool and a host of rare plants. Then spend your days going big on outdoor experiences: try out being a marine biologist for a day and learn more about the Azores’ incredible ecosystem or hop on a 4x4 tour to explore old settlements and verdant forests. Over on smaller Terceira, The Shipyard Angra is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a dose of eye-catching modernity and a bit more independence. Terceira is home to agricultural plains encompassed by crater walls, a collapsed volcanic cone surrounded by the sea and the Algar do Carvão – a cavernous volcanic vent around 90 metres deep that can be explored by descending 338 steps (but remember: what goes down, must come up).

It’s easy to include The Azores in a Portugal honeymoon – escape here between city stays in charismatic Lisbon and gothic Porto. ➤

‘Time your honeymoon right and you can head down to the beach with a resident turtle expert for the rare chance to see these beautiful creatures laying their eggs’.

Help protect critically endangered turtles in the Seychelles

Herons fly over the golf course and turtles nest on the beach at this elegant hideaway on the north-west coast of Praslin. Constance Lemuria is a dreamy mix of nature, style and service, where keeping the environment healthy takes top priority.

In 2013, the Constance group of hotels (which has seven properties dotted throughout the Indian Ocean) put in place an environmental sustainability performance programme to up its efforts, and it’s now a certified Green Globe Gold member.

At Lemuria, you’ll be offered an aluminium drinking flask which you can fill up at water fountains around the resort, and almost two-thirds of the water used in the resort is treated and reused to irrigate the golf course. But it’s the programme to protect the critically endangered hawksbill turtle population that stands out. The turtles come and nest on gorgeous Grand Anse Kerlan beach between October and February each year, so time your honeymoon right and you can head down to the beach with a resident turtle expert for the rare chance to see these beautiful creatures laying their eggs.

Sri Lanka’s ground-breaking wetlands resort

It might come as a surprise that a lush corner of Sri Lanka (just 10 minutes from iconic Sigiriya Rock) has been inspired by a spot in the UK’s capital city. The incredible journey at Jetwing Vil Uyana started over 16 years ago, inspired by the habitat of the London Wetlands Centre. It’s now Sri Lanka’s most successful eco-resort, a beautiful personality-packed retreat off ering style and serenity in ground-breaking man-made wetlands that provide habitat for slender loris, fi shing cats, otters and over 100 bird species. Starting with the basics, the open design of the buildings reduces the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. There’s an on-site organic farm which produces fruit, vegetables, herbs and honey to be used in the resort’s kitchens, and all of the wastewater from various hotel operations is treated in the grounds and used for irrigation.

Choose to stay in a villa nestled among reed beds by the lake, in the forest or over paddy fields. The two-storey Forest Dwellings, which come with a plunge pool, are probably the most private options as they’re surrounded by towering reeds, while the cooling breeze and feeling of peace from the over-water balcony of the Water Dwelling is magical.

Find a real sense of place in Sri Lanka

With just 25 pool villas and a 150-year-old mansion house sitting in 58 acres of tranquil tropical vegetation close to all the attractions of the Cultural Triangle, there’s a lot to love about Uga Ulagalla . You’ll appreciate it even more when you know about its focus on everything local. The traditional bell ringing ceremony as you arrive sets the tone of the rest of your stay: sublime service and a sense of destination.

‘Each chalet comes with two bikes, allowing you to make your way around the estate under your own steam’.

Food miles are kept to a minimum thanks to produce from the hotel’s organic garden and local farmers and fishermen, while community projects here have included the installation of a reverse osmosis water treatment facility in a local village. In 2020, Ulagalla launched an Elephant Research Centre to help resolve local issues with elephant-human conflict.

You might well see elephants (and monkeys) during your stay. Each chalet comes with two bikes, allowing you to make your way around the estate under your own steam, and you can take dawn and dusk kayaking excursions to a historic nearby reservoir, paddling past fishing villagers and an array of birdlife. ➤

The Caribbean hideaway with local people at its heart

If your style is more rustic-chic than ubersleek, we’re about to let you in on Antigua’s best-kept secret. At couples-only Keyonna Beach Resort – an intimate all-inclusive hotel that sits just steps from the calm, clear waters of the Caribbean Sea – seagrape trees prop up thatched roofs and cute cottages are scattered along flower-lined pathways.

People are at the heart of this vintage Caribbean resort. Fresh and delicious dishes are cooked to order, containing locally grown vegetables from nearby farmers’ markets, bread baked daily in the local village of Urlings, and fish freshly caught by local fishermen. Each piece of furniture is crafted to perfection by a team of local carpenters. Place mats and lampshades are hand-weaved by the Industrial Workshop for the Blind.

Keeping the supply chain short and simple –encouraging sustainable farming, supporting the health of the soil, reducing food packaging, eliminating food waste – means you can feel better about enjoying the local environment. Book a place on a rainforest canopy tour for a thrilling journey through the island’s lush forest on a series of zip-lines without disturbing the wildlife.

A pioneering positive Attitude in Mauritius

When it comes to environmental and social responsibility, Attitude Hotels is at the top of the game. This group of eco-committed hotels doesn’t shy away from doing everything it can to protect Mauritius’s natural landscapes and support its economy. It’s in its bones. If you want stats, they’re all set out for you; Attitude has one of the most detailed sustainability reports around.

Sunrise Attitude is a stylish new hotel just for adults, located moments from one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. Leaving a positive impact is at its core: we’re talking a zero-single-use-plastic policy, with refillable glass jars for everything from coffee to shampoo in every room; Mauritian-made mineral suncream, which reduces the risk of damage to the reefs and marine life; and a boutique featuring the work of talented local artisans and small companies.

The approach enhances the guest experience, too. You’re invited to live like a local and take part in the resort’s bespoke Otentik programme – a series of experiences to help you get to know this special corner of the world. You can dine with a local family in their home, learn how to play a traditional Mauritian instrument and use the Otentik Discovery app

to find places only locals know about, like a stunning view reached by following dirt tracks on a scooter through sugar cane fields.

The Maldives’ educational eco-centre and hydroponic gardens

Kuramathi Maldives , with its dazzling choice of facilities and swoon-worthy sandbank, is our most popular honeymoon resort. It’s also one of the most environmentally forward-thinking – verified by its not-easy-to-achieve Travelife Gold certification for the tenth year in a row.

‘Fresh salads and herbs are grown in the island’s hydroponic garden – a resourceful way to get your greens in this far-flung string of sandy islands’.

Beneath the swaying palms and bright blue skies, eco-conscious thinking underpins everything the resort team does. Kuramathi’s Eco Centre, established way back in 1999, was set up to better understand and monitor the fragile ecosystem. Today, it runs programmes on coral reef research and water temperature measurement, hosts resident marine biologist talks on topics such as environmental education and beach clean-ups, and shares vital research with conservation groups like the Maldivian Manta Ray Project.

Dig around at Kuramathi and you won’t find any shortcuts. In fact, when it comes to growing fruit

and veg, you won’t even fi nd soil. Fresh salads and herbs are grown in the island’s hydroponic garden – a resourceful way to get your greens in this far-fl ung string of sandy islands. The boatfresh fi sh you tuck into at the Island Barbecue is bought from Maldivian fi sherman and fruit and veg are purchased from small businesses, which puts around USD 250,000 back into the local economy. In 2011, a glass bottling plant was instilled so you can enjoy distilled, purifi ed water in the signature Kuramathi glass bottles – this reduces the usage of around 300,000 plastic bottles every year.

The ever-evolving ways to preserve the environment here aren’t just impressive; they can be an important part of your stay. Go on behind-the-scenes tours, get involved and play your part in helping future generations enjoy the Maldives for years to come.

Adopt a coral and stay in an amazing planet-friendly villa

“Leave only footprints behind” is the ethos at Gili Lankanfushi, a Robinson Crusoe-style island so naturally fl awless (and featuring amazing spaces including a jungle cinema, artisanal cheese room (yum) and chocolate cave (yum again) it was once voted the best hotel in the world at the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards.

‘The resort rehabilitates the coral reef by nursing coral on ropes and transplanting them onto degraded reef areas’.

This is a resort that cared before caring was cool – the huge, deceivingly opulent villas were built from sustainably sourced plantation teak and palm wood and supported by reclaimed telegraph poles. Plastic is banned. Waste is separated and recycled where possible and organic waste is composted for use in the resort gardens. Wastewater is collected, treated onsite and recycled for irrigation and the resort desalinates water with an efficient reverse-osmosis system. In the organic garden, chefs harvest fresh vegetables and herbs for you to enjoy and seafood is sourced from local fishermen.

The resort rehabilitates the coral reef by nursing coral on ropes and transplanting them onto degraded reef areas. On your honeymoon, you can ‘adopt’ your own coral line to support the project and help keep the underwater world beautiful.

The world’s fi rst Biosphere-Smart certified hotel

On a quiet hillside by the sea in Lanzarote’s Playa del Carmen, you’ll find the first hotel in the world to earn a UNESCO-backed BioSmart

certification. The sophisticated design at luxurious adults-only La Isla Y el Mar isn’t just about respecting the immediate environment, it’s about the environment in general. Not that guests will be aware of all this as they chill out in the two pools, indulge in a soothing ritual in the small spa or soak up the ocean panoramas from their private terrace. It’s just there in the background, helping to make a visit here a guilt-free pleasure.

‘The food here is delicious and very much rooted in the island’.

Technology has resulted in a building that consumes four times less energy and four times fewer carbon emissions than any non-sustainable hotel of a similar size. Sustainability is taken seriously, so they use geothermal energy to power the airconditioning, intelligent systems to control the lighting and all manner of clever ways to minimise water use.

The food here is delicious and very much rooted in the island. Herbs are home-grown at the hotel and lots of the restaurant’s produce is sourced from Lanzarote’s organic Finca Machinda farm. Opportunities to get out and see more of island life include e-bike tours, hiking trips and winery visits. ➤

Coral reef restoration and soap recycling at Bond’s Seychelles spot

It’s easy to see why Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa was a favourite haunt of James Bond author Ian Fleming. Here, a cluster of thatched villas tumbles down the hillside to the jade-coloured waters below, framed by huge granite boulders and tropical foliage for postcard-perfect scenes.

‘Coincide your honeymoon with the resort’s monthly Sustainable Day when you can help out with activities such as beach cleans.’

Plans are in place to keep it that way. The resort is working with the Marine Conservation Society on projects to support the island’s fragile coral reefs; solar panels are used to generate the hot water for the guest villas and the spa; and there’s a regular Hotel Earth Hour. One of the most interesting initiatives is a soap recycling scheme. Hilton Seychelles Northolme is part of Diversey’s Soap for Hope

programme, where unused soap is recycled and donated to the local community.

Dine al fresco at Wave, where you can feast on Mediterranean cuisine with a menu that draws on the bounty of the sea, and try and coincide your honeymoon with the resort’s monthly Sustainable Day when you can help out with activities such as beach cleans, learn the local culture with a Sega dancer or snorkel to the coral nursery with a conservation expert.

A passion for nature on Koh Samui

It’s the serene setting, exceptional service and environmentally sensitive approach that sets Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui apart. Framing a beautiful cove in a nature reserve on the north-east coast of Koh Samui, this romantic Banyan Tree-run hotel was sensitively built without cutting down a single large tree.

‘Personalised spa treatments take place in the privacy of the Prana Spa, hidden among the greenery’.

Strong eco initiatives are in place throughout, from efforts to reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint by sourcing rice straight from local farmers to supporting community projects such as funding and advising a nearby school on their low carbon practices, and supporting an animal rescue centre and wildlife foundations. Energy-saving light bulbs and electric buggies, biological pesticides and compost as fertiliser, an ozone system in the laundry, and reusable cloth bags made from recycled napkins in place of plastic bags all play their part.

Don’t worry, none of this comes at the expense of the five-star experience. Personalised spa treatments take place in the privacy of the Prana Spa, hidden among the greenery, where you can soak away your stress with a floralscented outdoor bath. Or, if you fancy a drink while you’re relaxing by the pool, just raise your flag and the waiter will appear to take your order.

The perfect couple(s): explore + relax moons

Dreaming of the beach life but only for a few days? Can’t agree on one stay-put place you both love? The beauty of a twin-centre or touring honeymoon is you can get under the skin of a destination – meet its people, learn about its culture and history – and take time just to chill, too.

Sightsee your way around Vietnam and the Temples of Angkor

Vietnam has glorious brochure-worthy beaches (you’ll find them in and around Nha Trang, Danang, Con Dao and Phu Quoc), but that’s not really what a trip to this fascinating country is about.

It’s a place that needs to be travelled. One day you’re in the hectic streets of Hanoi, where the smell of coffee mingles with the aromas from a thousand street-food carts (expect plate after plate of incredible food). Then you’re drifting on a colourful junk through the dreamlike limestone landscape of Halong Bay, openmouthed at the drama of it all.

Wander the ancient lantern-lit streets of UNESCO-listed Hoi An – a colourful riverside town and one of Vietnam’s most romantic spots – or float along the Perfume River in Hué to admire imperial palaces, pagodas and tombs. Meanwhile, the darker side of 20th-century events is movingly marked at Ho Chi Minh City’s War Remnants Museum and the immense Cu

Chi tunnels where Viet Cong soldiers hid out. While you’re close by, it’s a no-brainer to hop over the border to explore the mighty Temples of Angkor Wat, one of the world’s most amazing archaeological sites. Climb around crumbling temples half strangled by colossal tree roots, gaze up at ornate towers soaring above the jungle canopy, and smile back at the giant stone faces looking down on it all.

Discover the artsy, adventurous and wellness sides of Bali

Bali is a honeymoon hotspot, and it’s easy to see why. The Island of the Gods is a one-stop shop for Instagrammable beaches, storybook jungle landscapes and bohemian villages. And (spoiler alert) it’s excellent value for money.

‘Feeling suitably zen, head on to hip Ubud to check out its stunning rice terraces, cool café culture and art galleries’.

You’re missing out if you don’t head beyond the big-name beach resorts. Consider one of the island’s quieter coastal spots to chill out by the sea without the noise. Fronting a volcanic black-sand beach in the traditional village of Tembok, you’ll find a wellness retreat where it’s all about mind, body and soul. A place where you can completely relax, unwind and enjoy each other’s company. At adults-only Spa Village Resort Tembok there’s no TV in your room and you’re encouraged to forget all about your phone (in public areas at least). Daily activities – you can do as many or as few as you like – include stargazing from a floating platform in the pool, cookery classes to learn the secrets of the tasty local food you’re eating, and massages that will take all your stresses away.

Feeling suitably zen, head on to hip Ubud to check out its stunning rice terraces, cool café culture and art galleries. Surround yourself in nature at Sankara Suites & Villas, just a 10-minute shuttle ride north of Ubud. Days can begin with a session in the Yoga Pavilion as the morning breeze washes over the paddy fields, or with time lounging by the treetop infinity pool. It’s your honeymoon, so a floating breakfast in your villa’s private pool is a must. Then get out and explore – the hotel can arrange excursions for you to cycle through rice fields, visit royal temples, drive a jungle buggy and trek Mount Batur at sunrise.

See the real Sri Lanka with your own private driver/guide

Warm, tropical Sri Lanka is a cultural paradise. This small island just south of India has an impressive collection of rock temples and fortresses, historical ruins and colonial-age relics. Then there’s its spectacular interior, home to rolling tea plantations and wildlife-rich parks where elephants and leopards roam free. So you can go on safari in vast national parks, climb ancient Sigiriya Rock, visit sacred cave temples and go tea picking, all in one week.

‘Stay at a beachfront retreat like Cinnamon Bentota Beach, which is creating quite the stir on the hotel scene’.

The best way to honeymoon in Sri Lanka is in a private car with a local English-speaking driver/guide. You won’t be watching the road or a map; instead, you’ll be gazing out of the windows watching daily life in Sri Lanka pass by. Your driver can suggest places to go that don’t feature in any guidebook; there’s nothing quite like having someone who knows the island inside-out to show you around.

Then wave goodbye to your driver (and newfound friend) and see what the beach life is all about on the island’s tropical coast. The south-west is a popular choice for palm-fringed golden sands – stay at a beachfront retreat like Cinnamon Bentota Beach, which is creating quite the stir on the hotel scene after its huge renovation.

Go your own way and take a fascinating journey through Jordan

If the classic romance thing just isn’t for you, we’ve got you covered. Jordan is a gold mine of history, heritage and culture in the otherworldly North Arab Desert. It lies under the radar for many travellers, even though it has more than its fair share of UNESCO-listed historic relics and astonishing natural wonders.

‘Snorkel the vivid underwater world of the Red Sea and float your cares away in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth but a sure-fire honeymoon high’.

Experience the lunar-meets-Martian-like landscapes of Wadi Rum where you can hike through rust-coloured canyons or soar above the valleys in a hot-air balloon. The starry night skies here are incredible, so it’s a great place for stargazing. Snorkel the vivid underwater world of the Red Sea and float your cares away in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth but a sure-fire honeymoon high.

In Amman, the maze of hilly streets hides a host of wonderful surprises like buzzing souks, thought-provoking street art and relics from a bygone age. Sip mint tea in lively rooftop bars, share mouth-watering mezzes and try to resist the sweet-smelling pastry shops that seem to be open 24/7. And then there’s Petra, the remarkable rose red city. Visit at night and follow the thousands of candles that light the way to the Treasury. It hits different.

Add some Jurassic Park vibes to a mindblowing Mauritius honeymoon

Just a 45-minute flight away from Mauritius, dramatic La Réunion still has that off-thebeaten-track vibe that many couples crave. This volcanic paradise (and region of France) is not what you’d expect from an Indian Ocean island. It’s more like a glorious scaled-down Hawaii or an epic real-life Jurassic Park backdrop, where you can swoop through canyons on a helicopter flight, hike to a volcano at sunrise and explore an underground world of lava tunnels.

‘This soulful island has an adventurous spirit, with mountain hiking, wreck diving and waterfall chasing all on the agenda if you want it’. Most of Réunion’s top hotels are on the coast, so you can still wake up to glorious ocean views.

LUX★ Saint Gilles is the only luxury resort to have direct access to L’Hermitage beach with its calm coral-sheltered lagoon that’s safe for swimming. Expect fun extras if you stay here, like messages in a bottle and movie nights under the stars. If you’re honeymooning between June and October, you might also spot whales.

After your action-packed experiences, kick back on Mauritius’s picture-perfect shores, where you would be forgiven for doing little more than sun worshipping on the beach with a good book. However, this soulful island has an adventurous spirit, with mountain hiking, wreck diving and waterfall chasing all on the agenda if you want it. And then there’s the food. Tour the street food capital Port Louis for a taste of chilli-spiced pineapple or, to give you a real flavour of Mauritius, let us arrange for you to dine with a local family in their home. At LUX★ Le Morne, a stunning resort backed by the island’s most iconic mountain, you can immerse yourself in our crystal-clear lagoon with standup paddleboarding, or hike Le Morne Mountain for incredible panoramic views.

Historic sights and coastal delights in Italy, the land of love

Italy is the romantic capital of the world. Energetic cities are rich in history, art and culture, little-explored towns cling to cliffsides and five-star spa hotels edge mountainbacked lakes.

Land in Rome for its epic ruins and fling yourself into some extraordinary sightseeing. It’s best to walk around to take it all in – and there’s a lot to take in. Step back in time at the Colosseum and Roman Forum, toss a coin over your left shoulder into the Trevi Fountains and visit the 2nd-Century Pantheon before crossing the river to see the masterpieces of the Vatican City. Stop and linger a while too. Sometimes the most memorable moments are sitting together in a pretty square while you eat gelato or making future plans over an unforgettable slice of pizza.

Then travel to Sorrento where hotels sit high above the glittering Mediterranean and a network of cobbled streets lead you to highend boutiques, charming churches and bars serving refreshing limoncellos. Take a drive along the breathtaking coastline – a coastal road runs from Sorrento to Ravello via Amalfi and Positano and it’s lined with charming fishing villages and scented lemon groves. Or skip the city life altogether and stick by the coast on a two-stop honeymoon to Sorrento and Ischia, Capri’s down-to-earth neighbour. This picturesque island made the perfect setting for those stunning Mediterranean vistas in The Talented Mr Ripley. Head to the beautiful ruins of Castello Aragonese in the Old Town, the lively seaside piazzetta at the heart of Ischia’s social hub and the pastel-hued fishing village of Sant’Angelo. Hike up to lush Mount Epomeo – the island’s highest point – for

Paradise found

The Maldives is our number one honeymoon hotspot. Why? It’s like nowhere else on Earth. You’ll understand once you’ve felt its talcum-soft sands between your toes, cosied up at a beach cinema to watch a movie under the stars, and slept above its piercing blue lagoon in a private overwater villa.

As the Maldives experts, we can tell you that it more than lives up to the hype. These islands are our pick of the bunch for a honeymoon, but there are plenty more in our collection we can share with you.

How to choose your island

Each of our handpicked resorts is on its own private white-sand island, so your Maldives honeymoon will feel secluded and exclusive. Choosing where to stay is a big decision as it’s not just about where you’ll sleep. If you pop in-store for a chat, we’ll help you find the right match. We’ll talk you through things like the vibe of the island, the size, the food, the local experiences, how easy it is to get there, and what you might see on the house reef.

The Maldives experts

The Maldives is a special place for us at Kuoni. You could say we’re the OG Maldives influencer. We were there when the first resort opened its doors back in 1972 and have been in-the-know ever since. We only include best-in-class resorts in our collection and can answer any questions you have about them.

LGBTQ+ honeymoons in the Maldives

Every resort in our collection welcomes LGBTQ+ couples with open arms. The Maldives is a strict Muslim country and yes, there are a handful of places, like its capital Malé, that are very conservative. But it’s a different story on the private resort islands, where reality doesn’t mirror the law, so you can totally relax and be your full selves.

BEST FOR: INNOVATIVE FOODIE EXPERIENCES

Adults-only Hurawalhi Island Resort is a foodie mecca. Its superstar dining venue is the all-glass 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, where you watch colourful marine life swim around you as you savour seared scallops and smoked lobster. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see turtles and rays. Then you have ocean-view Canneli, where breakfasts are served with a side of dolphin spotting, teppanyaki dining at Kashibo, and gourmet fast food at plant-based J.F.K (Junk Food Kitchen).

BEST FOR: DESERT ISLAND CHIC

Constance Moofushi Maldives matches barefoot chic with all-inclusive pampering. It’s part of the luxurious Constance portfolio, where standards are famously high, and there’s impressive attention to detail. A subtle, highend Robinson Crusoe theme runs throughout the beautiful villas, from hammocks on the Beach Villa terraces to coin chest minibars brimming with treats, while the main sandfloored Manta restaurant has a ‘trip around the world’ theme. Go wine tasting in the ocean, watch a classic movie under the stars, and snorkel in coral gardens straight from the beach.

BEST FOR: PERSONALISED PERFECTION

Tiny Baros Maldives has set the standard of Maldivian luxury for decades, yet it still feels shiny and new. Architecturally spectacular The Lighthouse is one of the most iconic restaurants in the Maldives, perched over water with its sail-like white roof and candle-lit tables at the ocean’s edge. Bespoke experiences can be as romantic or as adventurous as you like: jump aboard the resort’s sailboat for a Champagne sunset cruise, paddle out on a glass-bottom-kayak-for-two to spot marine life, relax over a leisurely sandbank picnic, or do your downward dogs together on a floating deck in the middle of the sparkling lagoon.

A PERFECT MATCH: THE MALDIVES TWIN-CENTRE

Talk about couple goals. In many ways (size, spend, feel), Kuramathi Maldives and Kandolhu Maldives couldn’t be more different. That’s why together, they make up the dream Maldives twin-centre.

It’s rare, almost unheard of, to find the choice of activities, accommodation and dining that you get at Kuramathi , one of the Maldives’ larger islands. If you upgrade to the fantastic Select All Inclusive package, you can dine at a staggering nine à la carte venues (including Thai, Mediterranean, Indian, seafood and a barbecue) on top of your buffet restaurant. For your room, choose from cost-effective Garden Villas tucked away in the vegetation all the way up to Thundi Water Villas with a Pool on the edge of the island’s famous sandbank, the goto place for sunset strolls and ‘just us’ photos. Tiny Kandolhu is repeatedly voted one of the world’s most romantic hotels. There are only 30 villas, and you can walk around the island in under 10 minutes, so the mood is intimate. Most couples spend low-key evenings hanging out together in their beautiful villa. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to food, though – there are five small à la carte restaurants with five-star service. And if you’re here for the snorkelling, Kandolhu has an astounding house reef. Turtles love it.

BEST FOR: SOCIABLE MIAMI-MEETS-THEMALDIVES VIBES

Contrary to its name, The Standard, Huruvalhi Island is not what it says on the tin. It’s young, upbeat and oozes cool. Sea life meets nightlife at its glass-floored nightclub, disco balls hover over bathtubs in its stunning ocean-view villas, and spice-loaded curries are eaten with your hands at its rustic Maldivian restaurant.

There’s plenty more at this playful South Beach-Indian Ocean hybrid: sun-kissed games of tennis, fruity shisha, cocktails/mocktails packed with a surprising amount of good-foryou ingredients and a spa that pretty much demands your presence at least once. Pack your wildest inflatable – every eye-popping villa has its own infinity plunge pool.

BEST FOR: SPECTACULAR SNORKELLING AND DIVING

Romantic Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru Resort has stacks of beauty, inside and out. First, you’ll be dazzled by the two wide beaches, beachfront infinity pool and glittering lagoon. Then you’ll notice the details – like the eye-catching swirly rooftop at signature Moodhu Grill (one of four restaurants to take your tastebuds around the globe) with its dining platforms above the reef, and the cleanlined and contemporary villas where you can slide back the doors to let in the warm breeze. If gliding alongside whale sharks is on your bucket list, now’s the time to check it off. The resort’s location in the South Ari Atoll is one of the best places to spot these gentle giants, especially from August to October, thanks to the plankton-rich waters at the southern tip of the atoll. There are also boat trips to spot turtles and manta rays, plus a thriving house reef for first-rate snorkelling.

BEST FOR: A FUN FIVE-STAR FAMILYMOON

There is a way to bring the little ones along to your honeymoon without compromising on luxury. It’s called Niyama Private Islands Maldives . The resort’s island names – ‘Chill’ and ‘Play’ – set the tone. Explore the island on a private snorkelling tour for the chance to meet turtles and dolphins, or give surfing a go with expert tuition at the Surf Shack. Niyama has kids’ clubs (so you can enjoy date night at treetop restaurant Nest) and even an Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wiis for teens. Family Beach Pool Villas are kitted out with a big private pool, daybed, Maldivian dhoni swing and Indian Ocean views.

BEST FOR: WOW-FACTOR WELLNESS

If total relaxation tops the list of your honeymoon priorities, we think you’ll like it here. Kagi Maldives Spa Island is not just a resort with a spa, it’s the Maldives’ first wellness island retreat. The spherical Baani Spa, suspended above the lagoon, has four ocean-facing treatment rooms with therapies such as gemstone facials and Balinese massages for two, and a yoga room where mindfulness sessions are complemented with sound therapy. You can taste vibrant Hawaiian, Japanese, Thai and Peruvian flavours at KeUn, or unwind at the clean-eating restaurant, Spa Corner. There are only 50 villas on this spectacular island and they all have their own private pool.

BEST FOR: ALL-OUT LUXURY

Velassaru Maldives ’ beachy good looks have serious wow-factor. There’s a classic yet youthful feel about this luxury resort, with its cool bars and millennial aesthetic. The beach here is out of this world. Actually, everything about Velassaru is. The views, the villas, the service, the dining. Then there’s its romantic experiences. Pull up a bean bag at the lanternlit beach cinema, book a couple’s massage at the overwater spa, or savour fresh sushi and sashimi at Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki, poised above the lagoon on stilts.

BEST FOR: LAID-BACK ALL-INCLUSIVE

The mood at Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi is super chill. It’s a place for snoozing under a coconut thatch umbrella, cooling off with an icy drink at the pool’s swim-up bar, and feasting on mouth-watering food while watching the surf. It sits in 83 acres of exotic garden tropics, so it never feels crowded, and the all-inclusive package adds to the care-free atmosphere. You’re close to some excellent dive sites, the clear waters are great for snorkelling, and there are boat trips to take you fishing or dolphin spotting at sunset.

Wilderness and wildlife action in British Columbia

For couples who crave the great outdoors, it doesn’t get much greater than British Columbia with its untouched coastlines, ancient forests and mountain playgrounds. Every day here is a wildlife-watching opportunity, even if it’s by complete chance – like stopping the car so bears can cross the road, or spotting sea lions from your balcony as you sip your morning coffee.

Road tripping through BC is full-on fun. One day you’re cycling the seawall in Vancouver, then you’re hiking in Whistler. Then you’re

scouting out whales. Then you’re trying to surf. Having a car doesn’t limit you – you’ll still get to whoosh up the mountains on the Peak 2 Peak gondola from Whistler to Blackcomb, fly in a floatplane to The Butchart Gardens and whizz around the inlets of the Sunshine Coast on a Zodiac boat. And if you want to add touches of traditional romance, take afternoon tea at a posh hotel in Victoria or pack a picnic and drive to one of Tofino’s deserted beaches.

TO HELP STEER YOU: Follow our 14-day Best of British Columbia Road Trip, which takes you on a string of adventures from Vancouver to Whistler, the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island.

South Africa’s Garden Route and The Big Six

In South Africa, you’ll find the kind of wonders you’d never expect from one country, let alone one holiday. Driving is the easiest way to get around (bonus: you drive on the same side as in the UK). Start in Cape Town, a waterfront city with an urban edge that’s stunning from sea to sky thanks to its colour-pop neighbourhoods, iconic flat-top Table Mountain and glossy beaches – including one where tiny penguins waddle.

The rolling vineyards and gourmet food spots of the Cape Winelands are just an hour from Cape Town – park up at your hotel so you ➤

can hop on the Franschhoek Wine Tram to glug your way around gorgeous wine estates. Or, go straight for it and hit the easy-going Garden Route, loaded with nature and dotted with relaxed seaside towns like Hermanus, where you can spot whales from your hotel room. The excitement definitely doesn’t dwindle once you reach the end of the Garden Route. On the Eastern Cape, things take a wild turn: malariafree game reserves give you the chance to go on game drives to spot lions and elephants, walk with giraffes and impala, and sip G&Ts out in the bush at sunset.

TO HELP STEER YOU: On our 11-day Classic Garden Route Self-Drive , you can soak up the

sights in Cape Town, spot whales in Hermanus, take an oyster cruise in Knysna and go on a Big Five safari at Kariega Game Reserve.

Navigate New Zealand’s epic natural beauty Get behind the wheel to explore one of the most enchanting places on the planet. New Zealand is where the natural and spiritual worlds meet. One minute you’re cruising through sky-high-sided fiords or watching steaming geysers explode and mud pots bubble, the next you’re listening to ancient Māori tales that have been passed down through generations.

The scenery here is out of this world. No really,

it’s otherworldly. You’ll probably recognise some of it from The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings movies. Take wild walks through national parks, along deserted beaches, up craters and on glaciers. Get out on the water – even the ferry journey from the north to the south island is jaw-dropping. Spot tiny penguins, dusky dolphins and kiwis (the bird). Sky dive. Do a lot of wine tasting. Life on the road here is all about the unhurried pace, with near-empty roads and stunning views at every turn. You’ll quickly find that the lines between the journey and the destination are totally blurred, in the best possible way.

Consider hiring a motorhome – there are plenty of campsites, you can park almost anywhere and you’ll be driving on the left like in the UK.

Wildlife-watch your way around Australia

Australia is the kind of place where travelling under your own steam gives you those unexpected holiday highlights. Sometimes with people, often with wildlife. Like the ka-plosh of a kangaroo hopping through the water as you pull up for a lakeside picnic. Or a friendly wombat plodding over to see if you have anything for it to munch on. Or a cute quokka

getting in on your selfie snaps.

Take a few days to get your body clock on board in the sunny city of Perth. It might seem a long way from everywhere, but Perth is the closest gateway to the UK so it’s a great place to begin. For whale sharks (March to August), head to Ningaloo in Western Australia – the world’s largest fringing coral reef is home to these gentle giants and other marine species such as rays, sharks and humpbacks.

Then jump over to Kangaroo Island in South Australia, quite possibly the best wildlife spotting destination in the whole country.

Kangaroo Island has a lot of kangaroos, no surprise there. But there are also koalas,

echidnas and sea lions that are very easy to spot on this rugged wildlife hangout. At the end of an epic trip, toast your wildlife-seeking successes among the grape vines of Australia’s most famous wine region, the Barossa Valley.

TO HELP STEER YOU: Our 13-day Australia’s Ultimate Wildlife Safari takes you to the country’s wildlife spots. Drive it or campervan it, add a few days, pick where you want to stay – let us know and we’ll tweak it all for you

– you’re in for a series of adventures through otherworldly landscapes where, at night, the sky comes alive with some of the brightest stars you’ll ever see.

In Sossusvlei, watch the sun rise over a blazing desert of towering red dunes and see if you can scale Big Daddy, a whopping 280-metrehigh dune. From Big Daddy you’ll look out over Deadvlei; a salty-white moonscape-like clay pan with eerie blackened trees. Then there’s the candy-striped lighthouse at Germancolonial Swakopmund, shipwrecks on the wavebattered Skeleton Coast, and the prehistoric rock art and desert elephants of Damaraland. Just when things couldn’t seem to get any more

epic, enter Etosha National Park; Namibia’s wildlife-viewing wonder and one of the oldest conservation sites in Africa, dominated by a salt pan so big it can be seen from space.

TO HELP STEER YOU: Explore Namibia in style on our 13-day Luxury Namibia Self-Drive , which features Windhoek, the Namib Desert, Swakopmund, Damaraland and a safari in Etosha National Park. Surf’s up, roof down, chill out in sunny California California, here we come. Expect sun, sand and

star-studded scenes in sprawling Los Angeles. From Sunset Strip and The Hollywood Sign to the OC’s white-sand beaches and Santa Monica’s surf scene, LA is packed with enough attractions for a few days of all-out blow-out whether you’re a first-time-taster or a Cali-addict. There’s no better place to pick up a classic convertible and hit the open road. Instead of following the high-energy highway north to San Francisco, go south: the further south you travel down the coast of California, the more easy-going life becomes. TO HELP STEER YOU: Cruise from LA down the coast to San Diego and inland to Palm Springs in a classic convertible on our 9-day SoCal Road Trip.

Spain: Authentic inland charms before Marbs Spain is a bit of a dark horse. Beyond its golden shores and sunny climate, you’ll find fairytale old towns, rolling hills and underrated art scenes. Yes, you’ll be driving on the right (or wrong) side of the road, but it doesn’t take long to get to grips with the change.

Stick to the mainland for an authentic road trip through inland Andalucía, the beating heart of Spain. Seville is its sun-drenched, history-packed capital. If the gothic cathedral looks familiar, it’s because it doubled as the Water Gardens of Dorne on Game of Thrones. In enchanting Córdoba, admire the candycane-esque brick-and-stone-striped arches of

the Mosque-Cathedral and cross the Roman Bridge at sunset to see the town bathed in the evening light. Watch a fiery flamenco performance in a cave house in Granada and book a guided tour of the colossal Alhambra. Finish up on the beach in Marbella. If all you want is the charming side, head to the Old Town where picturesque squares are draped in bougainvillea. Or, if you’re all cultured out, let your hair down and hit the good-time beach clubs.

Culturemoon

This is your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon and for some that means pure relaxation; for others, it’s an opportunity for something different, time to learn something new, explore new cultures and meet people with fascinating stories to tell. The insight you get in Sri Lanka during a car and driver itinerary is second to none; listen to your guide as wide golden beaches give way to lush forests, the hills of Nuwara Eliya, ancient cities and beautiful temples.

Vietnam has a fascinating history –see incredible cities, learn how to cook like a local, take a river cruise where early risers can try t’ai chi on deck. You could even end your adventure at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, where crumbling temples have been reclaimed by nature. India, Dubrovnik, Montenegro and Jordan are some other culture-rich destinations that we recommend.

Minimoon

If you’re limited by time, budget or have an extravaganza of a honeymoon planned in a few months time, you can still get away, just the two of you, straight after the excitement and celebrations of your wedding.

Cities like Rome, Venice, Dubai, Dubrovnik and New York spring to mind but if you’re after a relaxing luxury beach escape, you can’t go wrong with a few days in Greece, Cyprus or Spain. For a touch more adventure and discovery, we recommend spending a few days on a self-drive through Tuscany or Portugal.

Babymoon

Increasingly popular, babymoons need to be well-thought out too as it’s that final trip before two become more. You’ll want to find the perfect mix of cocktails, mocktails and relaxation. More often that not, couples opt for a second trimester break, post the initial excitement and while it’s still comfortable to travel and there’s no limit on how far you can go.

Dubai represents the perfect blend of sunshine, relaxation and luxury. Thailand and Bali have some exceptional resorts with wellbeing as a focus. Closer to home, the choice is almost limitless – Greece, Spain and Italy each offer cities, sun and luxury. Then there are the ever-popular Canary Islands: the perfect spot for some winter sun.

Familymoon

Honeymoons with children in tow may need a little more thought as you’ll have a range of ages and therefore interests to consider. The Maldives isn’t always the obvious choice for a family holiday, but Kuramathi Island ticks all the boxes when it comes to balancing romance and kid-friendly entertainment.

Going on South Africa safari with the family is an incredible experience – you’ll go on game drives together to look for some of the world’s most majestic animals in the wild. Alternatively, head to much-loved Costa Rica where you can all enjoy an unbeatable back-to-nature adventure. For all-inclusive all-round fun, Paradisus Playa del Carmen in Mexico is made for families.
