Fremdes is Castroville’s newest pizza restaurant. Located in the heart of the city, it is housed in a newly renovated, almost completely rebuilt from the ground, two-story barn with a large outdoor brick patio. Being almost entirely rebuilt, the building has new wiring, plumbing, and AC systems. The patio is illuminated by multiple LED string lights and has seating for 80-90 people with a bandstand and multiple irrigated flowerbeds. On each side of the patio, a handmade fountain from Castroville Pottery pumps water, creating a relaxing and peaceful environment. When you walk inside, you will be amazed by the artisan woodwork surrounding you. The floors are made of a light-colored pine taken from 100+ year-old beams from a cotton gin in McKinney, TX. The bar top is made of beautiful mesquite and Vermont maple wood that makes for a great setting when serving beer from one of the 10 available taps. The tap lines run through a glycol chiller in a small storage closet under the stairs, outside the back of the building, and into the walk-in cooler where they meet with the beer kegs and CO2 and Nitrogen lines, which help provide a superior pour. In the downstairs dining area, you will find 12 tables seating 44 and a TV for entertainment. Head upstairs and you will find an upper dining area room with seating for 32 with a curved TV that is great for watching sporting events, hosting gatherings or events. Upstairs also has additional AC provided by a Mitsubishi split unit. In the kitchen, you’ll find the workhorse of the restaurant—a Woodstone pizza oven. This oven is powered by both gas and fire from wood to cook pizzas and give great flavor simultaneously. You will also find a 4-burner range, oven, fryolator, Hobart dough mixer, mechanical dough roller, multiple coolers including a 96” pizza topping cooler, a freezer, dishwasher, and stainless steel prep tables. This kitchen regularly turns out wood-fired pizzas, nachos, wings, salads, and dinner entrees. Fremdes also has two walk-in coolers for easy access and storage for large food items and beer kegs. The restaurant also shares a dry food storage space with Castroville Café in the barn out back which includes a metal storage area for firewood.
