TEXAS RANKS AMONG HOTTEST U.S. DESTINATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL HOMEBUYERS O R I G I N A L L Y S E E N O N C U L T U R E M A P. C O M
“According to the report, Texas accounted for 9 percent of all U.S. home sales to international buyers in the timeframe, behind only Florida (19 percent) and California (14 percent)." By Arden Ward
When it comes to international homebuyers, only two states are hotter than Texas, shows a new report from the Texas Association of Realtors. The annual Texas International Homebuyers Report, released August 29, details just how much buyers from around the globe pumped into the Lone Star economy over a 12-month period. From April 2017 to March 2018, 24,012 Texas homes were sold to international buyers — a total of $10.89 billion in sales. According to the report, Texas accounted for 9 percent of all U.S. home sales to international buyers in the timeframe, behind only Florida (19 percent) and California (14 percent). While the figures are impressive, they pale in comparison to the previous year. From April 2016 to March 2017, Texas boasted 12 percent of all U.S. sales to foreign buyers, totaling a whopping $18.66 billion.
Still, international home sales remain "one of the strongest sectors in Texas real estate, spurring strong growth in the Texas economy," says Kaki Lybbert, chairman of the Texas Association of Realtors, in a release. "Despite the slight drop in international homebuyers compared to the previous period, Texas remains an international hub and top destination for people from across the world to live, work, and conduct business." The study shows that 38 percent of buyers from Mexico purchased a home in Texas (the No. 1 destination for buyers from Mexico). Texas was also a popular location for buyers from China (7 percent), India (6 percent), the U.K. (5 percent), and Canada (3 percent). The Lone Star State also ranked third for homes sold by international owners, again behind Florida and California. From April 2017 to March 2018, 10 percent of U.S. homes sold by international sellers were in Texas.

WHERE TO EAT IN SAN ANTONIO RIGHT NOW: 5 TASTY FOOD TRUCKS FOR FALL O R I G I N A L L Y S E E N O N C U L T U R E M A P. C O M
PHOTO COURTESY OF BENJIE'S MUNCH TRUCK
By Brandon Watson As fall approaches, the last thing we want to do is be cooped up inside. Food trucks may not be as trendy as they once were, but they will always hit the spot for affordable al fresco dining. This month, take advantage of San Antonio’s best meals on wheels.
BENJIE’S MUNCH TRUCK - Chef Ben De Los Santos' decadent concept now has a brick-and-mortar, but his original food truck is still rolling. If an ingredient can be squeezed between two slices of bread, it has probably been featured on the rotating menu, where guests can find gooey spinach and artichoke grilled cheeses; Cubanos stuffed with porchetta and ham; and rum-and-Coke steak sandwiches with braised beef, arugula, and agave vinaigrette. Forget Subway, this is San Antonio’s real sandwich artist. COUSINS MAINE LOBSTER - This Los Angeles-based food truck
chain, catapulted to success after a 2012 appearance on Shark Tank, now has two locations bringing fresh seafood to the landlocked Alamo City. The main event is the New England-style lobster rolls — available dressed lightly in mayo or drenched in butter and lemon — but there are plenty of other treats. Try the lobster tots, topped with tons of claw meat, pico de gallo, and a vibrant cilantro lime sauce.
EL BANDOLERO - Long before food trucks were the subject of reality TV competitions or mediocre movies starring Jon Favreau, mobile taquerias dotted the landscape, seeking customer satisfaction over buzz. Rocky and Patty Soriano carry on that tradition with a minimal menu featuring
solid al pastor, spicy chorizo, and their secret weapon: birria. Made with pork instead of goat or beef, it’s tender and fatty without being greasy. It packs a punch without a drop of the addictive green sauce.
MR. FISH - This mainstay at The Block food truck park
freshens up San Antonio with Cali-style fish tacos ranging from beer-battered fish to grilled mahi mahi, but customers can also get down and dirty with an order of onion rings slathered in chili and topped with both grated cheddar and a cheese sauce. But its finest moment comes in the form of a surf and turf burrito, stuffed with skirt steak and grilled shrimp and drizzled in chipotle mayo.
SLIDER PROVIDER - The name tells you everything you need to know about this roving food truck. It only does one thing, but it does it so well that customers don't need to ask for anything more. The chicken or beef sliders come in a wide variety of versions, ranging from the classic Chuck Norris with bacon, caramelized onion, American cheese, and Sriracha ketchup to the fiery Cowboy From Hell with fire-roasted hatch and serrano peppers, garlic wing sauce, pepper jack, and Tabasco pickles. Then there's the infamous Goobster with crunchy peanut butter, grape jelly, and sharp cheddar. We promise it’s better than it sounds.

STUNNING NEW PUBLIC ART PIECE RIPPLES THROUGH SAN ANTONIO'S WESTSIDE O R I G I N A L L Y S E E N O N C U L T U R E M A P. C O M
PHOTO COURTESY OF THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO
By Katie Friel San Antonio's newest public artwork is rippling through Elmendorf Lake Park. Inspired by the nearby lake, Aguas Onduladas is a unique collaboration between artists and poets, transforming the written word into a unique interactive experience. Aguas Onduladas was commissioned by the City of San Antonio and is a collaboration between the Iowabased RDG Dahlquist Art Studio and San Antonio's inaugural Poet Laureate (and former Texas State Poet Laureate), Carmen Tafolla. Comprised of stainless steel "waves," the piece is meant to evoke the feeling of looking into water and seeing a reflection in return. Written on the waves, which range from 3-12 feet in size, are lines from Tafolla's poems "Cada Sueño" and "River Music," which passersby are invited to read and reflect upon.
At night, the interior of the sculpture is illuminated with amber light, which, according to the city, "references ... the warm glow of front porch lights found throughout San Antonio’s Westside neighborhoods." It also serves as an illuminated landmark for the neighborhood. "The richness of this public artwork is how it truly does what public art is intended to do — it represents the people and identity of the space it is in," said District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales in a release. "Incorporating elements that honor the natural surroundings and the cultural richness of the community makes this art installation one that all San Antonio residents and visitors should experience because it tells a unique story," the councilwoman continued. Aguas Onduladas is now open to the public.

J O H N S O N C I T Y ( 9 0 - M I N U T E D R I V E ) - Head to the seat of Blanco County — and hometown of President Lyndon B. Johnson — for a bit of science and history. Start your day at the Science Mill, an interactive family science museum housed in a former feed mill built in 1880. The Science Mill opens at 10 am on Saturday mornings. Enjoy 3-D movies, hands-on STEAM activities, and finish it off with lunch at the adjacent Lady Bird Lane Cafe, which offers farm-to-table fare. At 1 pm, head to LBJ’s boyhood home at 200 E. Elm St. for a free tour of the president’s humble beginnings. Finish the day off with a dip at Pedernales Falls State Park, or head to the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site for a tour of the SauerBeckmann Farmstead, a living history farm. N E W B R A U N F E L S ( 4 5 - M I N U T E D R I V E ) - Start at Naegelin’s Bakery, the oldest continually operated bakery in Texas, for an apple strudel (but quick, before they run out!). Then head to the McKenna Children’s Museum for a variety of interactive exhibits, including the Lend-A-Hand simulated Texas ranch, the Hill Country Campgrounds featuring tents and campfires, Destination Space for future astronauts, and, of course, a pretendplay grocery store for an early look at adulting. After the museum, get those kids a present at Got Toys downtown, and then treat the crew to lunch at the Faust Hotel and Brewing Company. End your day with a dip in the spring-fed pool at Landa Park.
S A N A N T O N I O - Keep it local with an early lunch at Señor Veggie, a vegan Tex-Mex spot in the Lavaca neighborhood. Try the poblano corn fritters for an appetizer or the spinach queso dip made with cashew cheese. Kid's menu selections include crispy tofu sticks, a black bean quesadilla, and, for the more adventurous palate, jackfruit tacos. Next, take the fam to Mission Kayak, strap on some lifejackets, and paddle the Museum Reach stretch of the San Antonio River Walk. Head to the Witte Museum next for some early Texas memorabilia, a taxidermied landscape, and dinosaurs. The Witte gift shop is a great place to treat the littles to under-$10 souvenirs. Finish your day at the Pearl Brewery’s Bottling Department Food Hall, where adults can sip drinks and sample local chef-driven fare on the patio while kiddos enjoy the splash pad. W A C O ( T H R E E - H O U R D R I V E ) - The shiplap renaissance heralded by
HGTV Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines has brought new interest to Waco. Start at Silos Baking Company with a cranberry orange biscuit before and enjoy games, including cornhole and sack races, on the lawn at Magnolia Market. When you’re ready to break from the Magnolia fray, head to Lula Jane’s for a farm-to-table lunch. There is only one way to follow up a healthful lunch, and that’s with a bit of carbonated deviance at the Dr Pepper Museum & Free Enterprise Institute. Sample an original recipe Dr Pepper and marvel at the vintage advertising. Finish the day at Homestead Craft Village at Homestead Heritage, an agrarian- and craft-based intentional Christian community, where your crew can watch craft demonstrations emphasizing sustainability and cooperation. Cafe Homestead serves scratch-made cuisine, and Brazos Valley Cheese is a great stop for an artisanal cheese snack for the ride home.
