ike it or not, Austin’s dining public tends to be culinary magpies, flittering from one shiny new restaurant to the next. In doing so, they are missing a lot of great meals. These eight unsung restaurants may not be trendy, and the interiors may be more lived-in than chic, but they deserve every local's attention.

Andiamo Italiano This stridently traditional ristorante may be located in a strip mall, but the dining room is nothing but elegant. The starched tablecloths are white in defiance of tomato sauce, the napkins are carefully folded, and fresh flowers lend the tables grace. Yet, for all that gentility, the place never feels buttonedup. Go ahead and slurp that spaghetti alla carbonara. Andiamo cares more about the pleasure of the moment than any sense of decorum. Bartlett’s As the Capital City’s cuisine gets ever more showy, there’s something to be said for a place that does the classics right. Nothing about this West Anderson Lane spot is particularly innovative, but what’s not broke doesn’t need fixing. Bartlett’s club salad, mushroom Swiss burgers, and rosemary salt-crusted prime rib are canonical in execution and as sparklingly American as Fourth of July fireworks. Daruma Ramen Most of the noodle talk around town centers on that other famous ramen shop, but this Sixth Street oasis makes some brilliant broth of its own. That especially holds true during the summer, when heavier soups can weigh guests down. Daruma’s stocks always offer plenty of zip — from the delicate chicken base used in the shio to the complex fruit and veggie variety anchoring the veggie miso. Dawa Sushi Maybe this Bouldin Creek food truck has a magical beaded bag, the kind Hermione Granger used to improbably tote weeks' worth of supplies in Harry Potter. It’s difficult to ascertain just where they put all the ingredients for the

lengthy menu, which spans both Japanese and Korean cuisine. Wizardry or not, dishes like Kimcheese fried rice with kimchi and mozzarella, the Waikiki beach roll with soft shell crab, and the spicy ramen soup are simply spellbinding. El Mesón Austin has no shortage of superlative Mexican restaurants, from pioneers like Fonda San Miguel to red-hot newcomers like Suerte and Comedor. But none feel as neighborly as this South Austin charmer. El Mesón feels less like a restaurant and more like an extension of chef and co-owner Marisela Godinez’s home kitchen. Her beef Yucatan, cochinita pibil, and grilled parrillada will make you feel like family, too. Saffron Though this North Austin eatery has plenty for the carnivore, including their signature chicken momo dumplings, it is an absolute must-hit for vegetarians and vegans. The gobi Manchurian — crisp cauliflower tossed in a piquant sauce and a final pop of soy — disappears quickly, and the Bombay Brussels, swapping out a tangy mustard sauce for the typical sweet glaze, is equally delicious. Taco-Mex There are no-frills restaurants and then there are no-frills restaurants like this Manor Road window offering gorditas, burritos, and nachos on the cheap. There may be no tables to speak of, but the steady stream of customers don’t seem to mind leaning against the building with a soda from the convenience store next door — especially with one of the city’s best carne guisadas taco in hand. Tuk Tuk Thai Cafe Judging by the passionate social media refrains that greeted Tuk Tuk’s reopening in May, it may be a slight exaggeration to call it entirely unsung. Still, this South Austin spot doesn’t get near the attention it deserves. The pineapple fried rice, pepped up with lime, has achieved near legendary status among regulars, but customers who dig deeper will find an outstanding panang curry that effortlessly balances the earthiness of duck with sweet grapes.

ot all that long ago, the land where Austin’s 2nd Street District now sprawls was hardly a downtown destination — let alone a bustling neighborhood.

It wasn't until the early part of this century that the six-block area evolved into a bustling urban hub with shops, bars, restaurants, apartments, condos, hotels, and entertainment venues. Today, the 2nd Street District continues to thrive as an urban neighborhood — a neighborhood that’s now hailed as one of the friendliest in the country. On June 3, National Geographic Traveler unveiled its list of the 28 friendliest neighborhoods in the U.S., and the 2nd Street District was the only neighborhood in Austin to make the cut. Neighborhoods in Houston and El Paso also appear on the list. Among the high-profile tenants of the district are Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater, Violet Crown Cinema, Urban Outfitters, Jo’s Coffee, La Condesa, Milk + Honey Spa, Lamberts, Austin Java, RIDE Indoor Cycling, W Austin, and AMLI on 2nd. National Geographic Traveler teamed up with Resonance Research Consultancy to develop the list. In a survey created for the magazine, the consultancy combined its proprietary "Best Cities" analytics with statistics and user-generated data that included walkability, housing affordability, public spaces, and places like cafes and restaurants. In addition, the survey examined social media and perception data from TripAdvisor and Yelp. The research produced a list of ZIP codes that National Geographic Traveler editors then paired with existing neighborhoods to generate the country’s friendliest neighborhoods. “Friendliness and goodwill go a long way. We want the traveling world to

discover destinations that embrace diversity and hospitality when they extend a warm welcome,” George Stone, National Geographic Traveler’s editor in chief, says in a release. “That’s why we’re excited to share this list of the 28 most welcoming neighborhoods in the U.S.” “These vibrant, unique enclaves are friendly, surprising, and rewarding for locals and visitors alike,” Stone adds. “These destinations offer starting points to experience local city culture through food, people, art, history, and outdoor spaces.” Joining the 2nd Street District on the list of friendliest neighborhoods in the U.S. is The Heights in Houston. The Heights features an array of boutiques, thrift stores, antique shops, and restaurants. The first Saturday of each month, the neighborhood hosts the First Saturday Arts Market, complete with crafts, plants, artwork, and live music. AG Antiques, Jubilee, Manready Mercantile, Mary & Moss, and Retropolis are just some of the prime shopping stops in The Heights. Among the wellregarded eateries in the neighborhood are Boomtown Cafe, Cane Rosso, Field & Tides, Morningstar, and Revival Market. According to Houston Realtor Paige Martin, The Heights contains more than 450 Yelp-rated establishments, ranks among the city’s most walkable neighborhoods, stands out as a great place for family-friendly activities, and offers one of Houston’s best collections of well-preserved Victorian architecture. The only other Texas neighborhood to show up on the National Geographic Traveler list was the Chihuahuita and El Segundo Barrio in El Paso.

DIVE RIGHT INTO THE BEST SWIMMING HOLES AROUND CENTRAL TEXAS BY M ARK HENR I C KS // OR I GI NA LLY SEEN ON CULTUR EMA P.CO M

S

ummers in Texas can be intolerable, which is why knowing where to find the best swimming holes is indispensable. Central Texas offers up a bounty of watery beauty. Here are a dozen of the best swimming holes to cool off and feel refreshed.

Barton Springs Pool The grand dame of Austin swimming holes, and arguably America’s best urban bathing spot, Barton Springs features famously brisk water temperatures of around 68-70 degrees. Whether you’re into swimming laps, busting showy moves off the diving board, or just sunning on the grassy banks, Barton Springs is absolutely not to be missed. Know before you go: No coolers, food, alcohol, or glass bottles allowed. 2201 Barton Springs Rd., Austin. The pool is open daily year-round. Deep Eddy Pool The yin to Barton Springs’ yang and the oldest swimming pool in the state, Deep Eddy is a concrete-bottomed pool on the opposite bank of Lady Bird Lake. Open year-round, it’s popular with lap swimmers, sunbathers, and families. Know before you go: The pool is refilled every other day with fresh well water and is not chlorinated, so you can dispense the goggles. 401 Deep Eddy Dr., Austin. Hamilton Pool Preserve Hamilton Pool looks like a movie set, with a waterfall spilling off the huge half-dome into a circular pool ringed by boulders and a perfect beach on one side. Reservation and entry fees make this a relatively pricey outing, and swimming is sometimes prohibited due to high bacteria counts, but the canyon’s natural beauty makes all worthwhile. Know before you go: Reservations are required. Make your reservation online and pay $11 before going. 24300 Hamilton Pool Rd., Dripping Springs. Campbell’s Hole The seven miles of Barton Creek flowing through the greenbelt features several worthy swimming holes, including Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls. For ease of access, however, Campbell’s Hole tops the list. Entering from Spyglass Drive off MoPac, it’s a short hike to this pool just a mile upstream from Barton Springs. Know before you go: Water level may be too low to swim much during dry spells. 1601 Spyglass Dr., Austin. Rio Vista Park The San Marcos equivalent of Barton Springs Pool is this park featuring a chute funneling the cool, crystalline waters of the San Marcos River into man-made rapids for tubers, kayakers, and surfers. You can rent tubes, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards; picnic, barbecue; and even shoot baskets or play tennis. Know before you go: Rio Vista can get crowded, so don’t expect to show up late and get a primo spot. 555 Cheatham St., San Marcos. Hippie Hollow “Clothing optional” is the key phrase forever associated with this Lower Colorado River Authority park on Lake Travis. It’s famously the state’s only clothing-optional park and is restricted to swimmers 18-and-up only. Rules forbid photographs, dogs, and lewd

behavior. Know before you go: Rangers close the park when it becomes too crowded, so arrive early on holiday weekends. 7000 Comanche Tr., Austin. Lake Pflugerville Park This 180-acre reservoir on the northeast side offers fishing piers, kayak rentals, and a launch ramp for non-motorized boats, but the main attraction for swimmers is the pocket-sized sandy beach. Bathers and sun worshippers of all ages spread blankets and picnic at the covered tables year-round. Know before you go: Shade is in short supply, so consider bringing a pop-up or beach umbrella. 18216 Weiss Ln., Pflugerville. Mansfield Dam Park Scuba divers are common sights in this deep cove on Lake Travis near Mansfield Dam. The Lower Colorado River Authority has installed stairs, a wheelchair ramp, and even lifts to ease divers’ transition into the lake’s clear waters. There’s lots more to do, including sunbathing on the rocky shores, fishing, floating, and barbecuing. Know before you go: If you plan to come here often, consider an annual permit. 4370 Mansfield Dam Park Rd., Austin. Blue Hole — Georgetown On the south fork of the San Gabriel River in downtown Georgetown, dammed waters create a scenic lagoon bordered by limestone bluffs on one side and grassy shores on the other. Climbing or diving from the cliffs is forbidden (no matter how many people you see doing it). Know before you go: Park for free in a public lot and garage at Third and Rock streets. 100 Blue Hole Park, Georgetown. Blue Hole — Wimberley Rope swings; towering cypress trees; and the cool, shaded waters of Cypress Creek characterize this gem stashed in the center of the village of Wimberley. The swimming hole is open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day, weekends in May and September, and closed the rest of the year. Know before you go: Swimmers are encouraged to make reservations online for one of two time slots: 9 am-1 pm or 2-6 pm. 100 Blue Hole Ln., Wimberley. Krause Springs Krause Springs is the only privately owned swimming hole on this list and the only one that allows camping. Dozens of springs fill both manmade and natural pools flowing into Lake Travis and the waterfalls, grottos, and abundant vegetation combine to make for breathtaking beauty. Know before you go: The Krause family does not accept credit cards, so bring cash. 404 Krause Spring Rd., Spicewood. Jacob's Well Limpid 68-degree water from the Trinity Aquifer wells up to fill this 140-foot-deep cavern and form Cypress Creek. In order to swim, you must have a reservation for a specific twohour slot to guarantee your spot in the water. Know before you go: There is no public drinking fountain. Bring water but not strollers. The 15-minute hike in has multiple sets of stairs. 221 Wood Acre Dr., Wimberley.

AUSTIN’S TOP REAL ESTATE AGENTS TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT

Owner and Principal Broker of KSIR

Associates and Executives of Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty (KSIR) released a series of short films, which profile agents through micro-branding, focusing on the story of each individual in order to tell the story of the greater company. Known for industry innovation, KSIR engaged Chicago-based branding house Evoker, Inc. to produce the films. The third wave of films for top agents have now been released to the public and are making the rounds on social media. “Our firm is comprised of some of the most exceptional professionals in the real estate business. These films provide unprecedented insight into what makes them both unique and valuable,” said J Kuper, Owner and Principal Broker of KSIR. “Buying or selling a home is an intensely personal process, not just a business transaction. We want to give potential clients a way to get to know our agents on a deeper level,” he continued. These micro-movies will turn the traditional agent bio video on its head. As Evoker, Inc. puts it, they’re films, not just videos—and that’s a huge differentiator. These polished films strip away the corporate umbrella and mass-produced structure of a bio video and allow the agent to simply tell their personal story. No two are ever the same. “Something beautiful shines through for every individual’s personality,” says Evoker, Inc. Founder Kameron Jackson. “This is a platform to get to know the agents themselves, not just the company. It puts the decision-making process into the buyer or seller’s hands and allows them to decide who they think is a good fit.” With videos shown to increase consumer understanding of a product or service by 85 percent,
