New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau underscore just how much bigger the San Antonio metro area is getting. The Alamo City added the greatest number of residents among large U.S. cities from 2016 to 2017, and New Braunfels ranked among the fastest-growing cities on a percentage basis. From July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2017, San Antonio’s population swelled by 24,208, according to Census Bureau data released May 24. Put another way, that’s an average of 66 new residents per day (people moving to the city and babies being born). “That’s a growth rate of 1.6 percent. This growth was enough to push San Antonio’s population above the 1.5 million mark,” Census Bureau demographer Amel Toukabri says in a release. To be precise, San Antonio’s population stood at 1,511,946 as of July 1, 2017. “It comes as no surprise to me that San Antonio was the fastest-growing city in the country from 2016 to 2017. A competitive cost of living and business-friendly atmosphere make our city a great place for young people, families, military members, and businesses,” says Richard Perez, president and CEO of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. “All you have to do is come to San Antonio and see our 300 years of culture and history, proud residents, excited tourists, and a bustling economy sprinkled with opportunity,” Perez adds. “San Antonio is real and ready.” San Antonio wasn’t the only big gainer among Texas cities with at least 50,000 residents.

Dallas ranked third for numeric growth among large cities from 2016 to 2017, adding 18,935 residents and landing at a population of 1,341,075. Fort Worth was in fourth place with 18,664 new residents. It bypassed Indianapolis to become the 15th largest city in the U.S; as of last July, Fort Worth’s population was 874,168. No. 9 on the list of fastest-growing cities was the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Frisco, adding 13,470 residents from 2016 to 2017. Austin rounded out the Texas contingent in the top 15, taking the No. 12 spot with the addition of 12,515 residents and elevating the total population to 950,715 as of last July. Examined on a percentage basis, seven Texas cities with at least 50,000 residents were among the 15 fastest-growing U.S. cities from 2016 to 2017, according to the Census Bureau. At No. 1 in that ranking was Frisco, notching an 8.2 percent increase in population from 2016 to 2017. As of last July, Frisco was home to 177,286 people. At No. 2, right behind Frisco, was the San Antonio suburb of New Braunfels, with a growth rate of 8 percent. As of last July, its population stood at 79,152. City planning director Chris Looney predicts the population of New Braunfels will reach 91,974 in 2022. In third place for percentage growth was the Austin suburb of Pflugerville, which registered a 6.5 percent jump in population during the one-year period. It was home to 63,359 people as of last July. Another Austin suburb, Georgetown, held down the No. 6 spot, with a 5.4 percent population spike from 2016 to 2017. The city had 70,685 residents as of last July.

WHERE TO EAT IN SAN ANTONIO RIGHT NOW: 7 SMOKIN’ HOT BARBECUE JOINTS O R I G I N A L L Y S E E N O N C U L T U R E M A P. C O M

By Brandon Watson Ooo-wee! Nothing is better on a warm May day than sitting on a picnic bench in front of a huge pile of barbecue and a few pints of sides. San Antonio is full of barbecue joints worth visiting all year round, so meat sweats be damned, this month we are making our way through perfectly barked brisket and expertly charred chicken to prove that where there’s smoke, there’s a whole lotta fire.

2M SMOKEHOUSE - You know that little dance you do when you bite into a really good piece of smoked meat (we call it the brisket bounce)? Prepare to wear out your dancing shoes at this East Side joint, where Central and South Texas barbecue traditions collide. Faves include barbacoa, shockingly moist turkey breast, and the hefty 2M sandwich piled with chopped brisket, pulled pork, and sausage. All of them should be ordered with a side of Chicharoni Macaroni, which is exactly what it sounds like.

DIGNOWITY MEATS - This may sound like sacrilege, but sometimes we need a break from Texas-style barbecue. For those moments, nothing beats this casual Dignowity Hill spot. The menu combines Midwest favorites like Kansas City burnt ends and St. Louis ribs with meats that would be right at home in a New York deli. Layered with caramelized onions and Swiss cheese, the house-smoked pastrami is the thing to get, but you should also know that Dignowity has a way with b-o-l-o-g-n-a. THE GRANARY ‘CUE & BREW - Wear your most formal bib to this Pearl delight, which switches over from a traditional barbecue service to a more upscale experience at dinner. The daytime’s meat-by-the-pound menu is certainly worth a try, but you’ll go gaga in the evening with dishes like brisket ramen; Texas toast slathered in barbecue butter; and smoked rabbit with bacon, celery root, mushroom chips, and lovage (think strong celery, but fancier).

NELSON’S BBQ - With a logo that looks like it was scrawled in Microsoft Paint and a menu that sticks to the basics, this food truck isn’t trying to redefine the game. What they are trying to do is excel at everything they do — from succulent crusted brisket to chop-licking spare ribs. If you have a serious case of the munchies, you can’t go wrong with the Nasty Nate: Texas toast obliterated with sliced moist brisket, house smoked bacon, and a generous scoop of mac ’n’ cheese. POLLOS ASADOS LOS NORTEÑOS - After a seven-month hiatus to make some equipment upgrades, San Antonio’s chicken king came back in April better than ever. We are still clucking over the outstandingly juicy charcoal grilled hens served with blackened onion, charro beans, and rice. Then there’s that green sauce. If you don’t see angels, your tongue’s gone numb. SMOKE SHACK BBQ - There may be no way to prove that San Antonio invented Frito pie, but there’s no denying the city has made it its own. And this food truck turned brick-and-mortar has a version that instills deep civic pride. The eighth wonder of the world keeps it tight with a huge pile o’ brisket, pintos, cheddar, and barbecue sauce. Daisy Doolin (the mother of the guy who invented the famous corn chips and the purported inventor of the dish that bears the name) would be proud. TWO BROS BBQ MARKET - The name refers to two men — Jake Dady and celebrity chef brother, Jason — but the buzz as of late has been about pitmaster Laura Loomis, one of few women in the business and one of the youngest pitmasters in the state. All three have had a hand in making Two Bros one of the best joints in the city. Don’t miss the Cheesy Chop (that’s chopped beef cuddled up with creamy mac ’n’ cheese) or the sweet and tangy cherry glazed baby back ribs.

DIVE RIGHT INTO THE BEST SWIMMING HOLES AROUND CENTRAL TEXAS O R I G I N A L L Y S E E N O N C U L T U R E M A P. C O M

PHOTOS BY BRIAN P. BARNES

By Mark Henricks Summers in Texas can be intolerable, which is why knowing where to find the best swimming holes is indispensable. Next time you travel to Central Texas for a few hot and steamy days, keep in mind that the area offers up a bounty of watery beauty. Here are a dozen of the best swimming holes to cool off and feel refreshed. BARTON SPRINGS POOL - The grand dame of Austin swimming holes, and arguably America’s best urban bathing spot, Barton Springs features famously brisk water temperatures of around 68-70 degrees. Whether you’re into swimming laps, busting showy moves off the diving board, or just sunning on the grassy banks, Barton Springs is absolutely not to be missed. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: No coolers, food, alcohol, or glass bottles allowed. 2201 Barton Springs Rd., Austin. The pool is open daily year-round.

LAKE PFLUGERVILLE PARK - This 180-acre reservoir on the northeast side offers

DEEP EDDY POOL - The yin to Barton Springs’ yang and the oldest swimming pool

Travis near Mansfield Dam. The Lower Colorado River Authority has installed stairs, a wheelchair ramp, and even lifts to ease divers’ transition into the lake’s clear waters. There’s lots more to do, including sunbathing on the rocky shores, fishing, floating, and barbecuing. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: If you plan to come here often, consider an annual permit. 4370 Mansfield Dam Park Rd., Austin.

in the state, Deep Eddy is a concrete-bottomed pool on the opposite bank of Lady Bird Lake. Open year-round, it’s popular with lap swimmers, sunbathers, and families. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: The pool is refilled every other day with fresh well water and is not chlorinated, so you can dispense the goggles. 401 Deep Eddy Dr., Austin.

HAMILTON POOL PRESERVE - Hamilton Pool looks like a movie set, with a waterfall spilling off the huge half-dome into a circular pool ringed by boulders and a perfect beach on one side. Reservation and entry fees make this a relatively pricey outing, and swimming is sometimes prohibited due to high bacteria counts, but the canyon’s natural beauty makes all worthwhile. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Reservations are required. Make your reservation online and pay $11 before going. 24300 Hamilton Pool Rd., Dripping Springs.

fishing piers, kayak rentals, and a launch ramp for non-motorized boats, but the main attraction for swimmers is the pocket-sized sandy beach. Bathers and sun worshippers of all ages spread blankets and picnic at the covered tables year-round. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Shade is in short supply, so consider bringing a pop-up or beach umbrella. 18216 Weiss Ln., Pflugerville.

MANSFIELD DAM PARK - Scuba divers are common sights in this deep cove on Lake

BLUE HOLE — GEORGETOWN - On the south fork of the San Gabriel River in downtown Georgetown, dammed waters create a scenic lagoon bordered by limestone bluffs on one side and grassy shores on the other. Climbing or diving from the cliffs is forbidden (no matter how many people you see doing it). KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Park for free in a public lot and garage at Third and Rock streets. 100 Blue Hole Park, Georgetown.

features several worthy swimming holes, including Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls. For ease of access, however, Campbell’s Hole tops the list. Entering from Spyglass Drive off MoPac, it’s a short hike to this pool just a mile upstream from Barton Springs. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Water level may be too low to swim much during dry spells. 1601 Spyglass Dr., Austin.

BLUE HOLE — WIMBERLEY - Rope swings; towering cypress trees; and the cool, shaded waters of Cypress Creek characterize this gem stashed in the center of the village of Wimberley. The swimming hole is open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day, weekends in May and September, and closed the rest of the year. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Swimmers are encouraged to make reservations online for one of two time slots: 9 am-1 pm or 2-6 pm. 100 Blue Hole Ln., Wimberley.

RIO VISTA PARK - The San Marcos equivalent of Barton Springs Pool is this park featuring a chute funneling the cool, crystalline waters of the San Marcos River into man-made rapids for tubers, kayakers, and surfers. You can rent tubes, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards; picnic, barbecue; and even shoot baskets or play tennis. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Rio Vista can get crowded, so don’t expect to show up late and get a primo spot. 555 Cheatham St., San Marcos.

KRAUSE SPRINGS - Krause Springs is the only privately owned swimming hole on this list and the only one that allows camping. Dozens of springs fill both manmade and natural pools flowing into Lake Travis and the waterfalls, grottos, and abundant vegetation combine to make for breathtaking beauty. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: The Krause family does not accept credit cards, so bring cash. 404 Krause Spring Rd., Spicewood.

HIPPIE HOLLOW - “Clothing optional” is the key phrase forever associated with this Lower Colorado River Authority park on Lake Travis. It’s famously the state’s only clothing-optional park and is restricted to swimmers 18-and-up only. Rules forbid photographs, dogs, and lewd behavior. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Rangers close the park when it becomes too crowded, so arrive early on holiday weekends. 7000 Comanche Tr., Austin.

JACOB’S WELL - Limpid 68-degree water from the Trinity Aquifer wells up to fill

CAMPBELL’S HOLE - The seven miles of Barton Creek flowing through the greenbelt

this 140-foot-deep cavern and form Cypress Creek. In order to swim, you must have a reservation for a specific two-hour slot to guarantee your spot in the water. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: There is no public drinking fountain. Bring water but not strollers. The 15-minute hike in has multiple sets of stairs. 221 Wood Acre Dr., Wimberley.
