ust because a budget may not accommodate a Roman holiday doesn’t mean that culinary travel is off the table. The Texas Hill Country is full of world-class restaurants that can be visited with little more than a tank of gas. Snap a few pics and inspire some FOMO of your own. Apis Restaurant and Apiary Though Austin likes to claim this upscale Spicewood restaurant as its own, it is actually almost an hour’s drive from downtown. But who can blame the Capital City for wanting to take credit? Chef and owner Taylor Hall has created a showstopper that truly celebrates Texas terroir. And the hyper-local sourcing isn’t virtue signaling. Apis' unfussy cuisine requires integrity from every ingredient, whether it's a strip loin used in carpaccio or the flour used in pappardelle. The same applies to Pizzeria Sorellina, the restaurant’s casual cousin located just a few steps away. Bryan’s on 290 Bryan Gillenwater, the chef and founder of this Johnson City eatery, likes playing with fire. Before open flames became de rigueur in Austin, he was happily charring everything from pork belly to flatbread. Naturally, the beef here is outstanding, from the hefty 28-ounce ribeye to the more demure bavette. The surprise comes from the other entrées. Scallops are served with delicate corn agnolotti, a Berkshire pork chop nods to cowboy cooking with heirloom corona beans and cornbread, and the orange marmalade-glazed chicken comes with a revelation in the form of smoked mac ’n’ cheese. The Laurel Tree The luxury treehouse lodging snaking through this property has a certain Swiss Family Robinson allure, but this elegantly funky eatery is worth a visit, even if guests aren’t settling in for the night. The menu changes weekly as crops ripen in the garden but always reflect chef Laurel Waters’ serious training in French cuisine (not many Hill Country chefs have worked for Alain Ducasse). One word of warning before hitting the road: Utopia is a dry town. Those who want a pairing with their pork chop should bring a bottle from home.

The Leaning Pear When Leaning Pear owners Rachel and Matthew Buchanan outgrew the historic Wimberley cottage that formerly housed their restaurant, they made a startling move. In 2013, they hopped over to a modern Overland Partners-designed space, ditching anything that could be described as quaint. The architecture now matches the restaurant’s decidedly contemporary fare. Though inspired — and sourced — from the Texas Hill Country, it’s just as likely to invoke the Mediterranean, with dishes like a classic panzanella, a seasonal mezze trio, and perfectly blistered wood-fired pizzas. Little Gretel In the Hill Country’s many German towns, restaurants can be as reductive as Disney World's It’s A Small World ride. This classic Boerne restaurant is a refreshing alternative. While it’s true that the food is typically hearty (only in a German restaurant could a half-pound burger be listed as “the lighter side”), chef Denise Mazal's deft palate makes classics like schnitzel and sauerbraten far from leaden. The half lamb-half beef Bavarian meatloaf topped with hunterstyle mushroom sauce will make guests swear off Heinz ketchup. Otto’s German Bistro Long before Joanna Gaines was selling linens at Target, this adorable Fredericksburg bistro was nailing the modern farmhouse look. No Hill Country spot pays as much mind to the interior details, from the minimal black sign to the cozy blankets it provides when the weather gets nippy. That attention is equally given to the fare. Otto’s explores the evolution of German cuisine in Europe and Texas, serving unexpected versions of Teutonic standards like schnitzel and wurst. The flammkuchen — a flatbread topped with creme fraiche and caramelized onions — is a must-try dish. Redbud Cafe If small towns are supposed to be sleepy, don’t tell that to Jon and Jan Brieger, owners of this downtown Blanco cafe. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the atmosphere is as rocking as a juke joint when the restaurant hosts a full slate of musical acts. The rest of the time, the space acts as a lunchtime community hub. Grab a Greek salad with quinoa tabouli or a venison burger cloaked in pepper jack cheese. Then meander over to the Brieger’s pottery shop to shop for local art, lavender products, and artisan home goods.

n a bright, shiny floored loft, contemporary art fairly popped off white walls as a bevy of smart, successful, chicly attired entrepreneurs and execs sipped cocktails in San Antonio’s uber-hip Southtown district one recent evening. DJ CRSTO’s throbbing rhythms added to the synergy between art, real estate and potential buyers of an exceptional space. The party was one of many “pop up” art events produced by experiential art purveyor House of L (HOL), a venture of Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty Broker Associate Leslie Gossett and international art curator Lana Carlson. Billed as an “Immersive Art Experience,” the event occurred at the sophisticated condo loft of art dealer Christopher Erck and his wife, Georgia. The unit encompasses the entire fifth floor of the six-floor Camp Street Residences, 114 Camp Street, and is listed by Kuper Sotheby’s topproducing agent Binkan Cinaroglu. “Camp Street offers a chic lifestyle in San Antonio’s most vibrant location, appealing to art culture,” Cinaroglu said. “Through HOL I was able to bring the owners’ vision of a curated art event to reality. HOL and Camp Street Residences complement each other in a natural, organic way.” The Residences were the vision of late artist and philanthropist Linda Pace, who developed them from an old candy factory. She also founded Artpace, an internationally recognized residency and exhibition program in San Antonio, and launched CHRISpark, a community garden memorializing her son across from the Residences. Ruby City, housing Pace’s personal collection, is located next door. Cinaroglu’s arty party became the talk of the industry in the weeks to follow. Prize-winning chef Jason Dady prepared appetizers such as pork belly covered in salted caramel and blue cotton candy, served on a skewer. Craft cocktails, fine wines and Topo Chico were perfect complements.

Gordon Kavwin and girlfriend Philisa Giannukos emerged from the long cocktail line with mojitos in hand. Kavwin, who leads a tech start-up in Austin, said he loves HOL’s vision. “Their concept is great – why not merge beautiful art and beautiful properties?” he said. “Their events draw influencers and potential buyers into an experience they can imagine living in.” Throughout the party, Cinaroglu answered questions – the loft has 7,800 square feet, Camp Street Residences are full of adventurous people in business, law, and sports – as curator Lana Carlson gave informal art tours. A native of Russia who studied art at the Sorbonne in Paris, she was director and founder of the Modern Art Gallery in Paris and St. Petersburg, and produced the first-ever state museum exhibition of Rodin in Moscow and St. Petersburg. “Our model at HOL is to present established artists from around the world with younger, emerging artists whose work is just starting to enter collections,” she explained. “We have connections with galleries and artists all over the world.” The present collection included artists from China, Russia, Europe, and the United States whose names will be familiar to collectors: John Franzen, RETINA, Mr. Brainwash, Doro Hoffman and Ugo Nunis, whose work is influenced by video games, among others. The expressive work of Tyler Guinn, an emerging star from Austin, drew new fans. For those wanting to take part in HOL’s private art events, educational programs and conceptual art performances, memberships are offered at various levels including private curation and market data.

SAVVY TEXAS DESIGNER SHARES 5 SIMPLE STEPS TO BEAUTIFY YOUR HOME BY HO LLY B E R E T TO

hen it comes to figuring out personal style, savvy interior designer Oscar Zuniga takes a customized approach. He realizes that people want to update their spaces, without necessarily doing a huge overhaul. To help them, Zuniga likes to start in the closet. "If you show me your closet, I can see what styles you love," says Zuniga, of Houston-based Oscar Zuniga Interiors. "Maybe you love color or a certain look. People often dress like their homes." He wants his clients to feel comfortable in their living spaces — after all, a home should feel welcoming to its occupants. When it comes to quick updates on a home, Zuniga has a few tricks up his sleeve that he uses to bring out the personalities of his clients and create a unique space they'll love. A splash of color "Paint is the easiest, most practical, effective way to see change [in a space] right away," says the designer, who founded his firm four years ago. "But it's not just about painting the walls. You can paint the furniture. Once, I got this huge canvas for a client and painted it and set it against a wall with two chairs and a table in front of it." The latter option, he says, is a great idea for someone who may like a pop of color, but doesn't quite want to go all-in and paint four walls some wild blue or red. By changing out the color on a coffee table or a bookcase, he says, a room gets an instant upgrade and a fresh look. Spot painting like that also helps people see how they can gradually make other, larger changes to their homes. In the interim, it's a low-commitment way to give a space a fresher feel. A new shift When Zuniga meets with his clients, he likes to walk through their homes with them, not just walking into a room and standing in it, talking to them about the space, but following them on a mock daily routine. It helps him understand the way people use their homes, and knowing that kind of traffic flow can help home dwellers consider how if they're using the furniture in their rooms to maximum effect. "Not everyone likes the look of two couches facing each other," he says, noting that that look is often a design default. But moving on from those couches to another space in the same room — or out of it altogether gives the room a whole new feel. "You have to adjust things to how you live," he says. That means a pedestal table that's been hiding in an attic might now become a perfect accent piece in the corner of a room. Moving where the dressers are in the bedroom can create space and make the room flow better. Love your layers As with clothes, layering allows for easy updates to a home look. "To me, the idea of laying is to bring objects you love into the look of the room," he says. He might add a stack of a client's beloved books to a coffee table or put trinkets with special meaning next to a vase to create a multi-layered visual. Perhaps there's a chair in the corner of a room that gets layered by the addition of a throw or a pillow, and then the entire look of the corner is augmented by a screen or table with funky art pieces on it.
Or, a shelf can be put up that serves as the foundation for a series of family heirlooms and photos. "Sometimes, you just know that certain objects are attracted to each other," he says. "When you follow your gut, these kinds of favorite pieces find their right home." Let there be light Like layering, lighting make a room pop. And switching up the lighting game, Zuniga says, is a quick way to give a space a reboot. "Even just changing light bulbs from regular soft white to led lighting can make a brighter impact and a cooler feel to the room," he says. "You can also change the lamp shades in your living space to create a more eccentric feel." He also recommends adding additional upper or lower recess lighting to art pieces, which helps create a more uplifting feel to those pieces. Lamps can offer a pop of personality to a nightstand or a coffee table that overhead lighting might not. And lighting different parts of a room in different ways can also achieve a new look. Picture perfect "Art is definitely a way to express your style and personality and does well on any space vibe," says Zuniga. But that doesn't have to mean going out and buying an expensive painting. People can hang their own creations, he says, which gives an instant personal feel to a space. Clustering family photos or images of beloved places offers a focal point in a space and also showcases the homeowner's personality. "One way to create art on a budget is to buy fabric to add color and pattern to a room," he says. "Plus, varying the textures in a gallery wall will add interest and depth to the space." Zuniga understands that home is a personal space and a deeply individualized concept. "When your house doesn't feel like your home, call a professional," he says. "I had a client who had this beautiful home, by anyone's definition, but she felt no connection to the space. Once I understood who she was and what she wanted in a home, we were able to give her a look that was hers." Zuniga also understands that people may not have the vocabulary to say what they want in a space or what design trend speaks to them. Designers, he notes, can interpret the right ideas to give clients what they need. Most of all, he adds, updating a home's look doesn't have to mean gigantic changes. Sometimes, it's the smallest details and touches that have the biggest impact.

They are both responsible for inspiring Texas Tulips, a new cut-your-own flower field blooming soon in Central Texas. Texas Tulips' newest field is currently underway at 15122 FM 775 in La Vernia, about 75 miles southwest of Austin. The operation allows patrons to stroll through massive rows of tulips and cut their own flowers from a field of thousands of blooms. According to owner Pieter Koeman, Texas Tulips should open in mid-February 2020 and close in late March/early April, depending on the weather. Texas Tulips, which has a similar operation in Pilot Point, near Dallas, is the latest endeavor from a family with a long floral history. Koeman grew up in the Netherlands, where his mother and father operated an 80-acre tulip farm for more than 40 years. After his father's death in 2011, Koeman, finding inspiration from an unusual source, decided to move to Texas. "The idea to open a tulip farm in Texas originally came from when I was young and was watching Dallas, the TV show, with my family. We always loved that show, and we were fascinated by Texas," Koeman says. "When my dad passed away, we saw an opportunity to go to Texas and start a u-pick tulip farm there." In 2015, Koeman and his wife, Petra, opened the first Texas Tulips on a six-acre field in Pilot Point. The farm was a hit in North Texas and inspired the family to head south for its second outpost. Like its North Texas farm, Texas Tulips' La Vernia location will offer pick-your-own flowers from a field of thousands. For a $5 entrance fee, visitors can select tulips from a variety of colors, all priced $2.50 per stem. Discounts for veterans, seniors, and students are also available. And, because this is the age of social media, and it doesn't get more Instagrammable than a massive field of blooming tulips, the company also offers a day-long, $25 photographer package.
