Charcoal Drawing Project CHARCOAL ON WOOD PANEL

SUSAN GOLDSMITH- DRAWING STUDIO 2010 Made for a school studio project, this drawing is an excercise in figure drawing as it shows both features of a human in the flesh and her skeletal remains. It comments on the mortality of humans and that one day we must all embrace our inevitable fate as a corpse awaiting burial. The wood panel is reclaimed wood from shipping crates the face of what is a box gives the impression that this is a section looking into the casket. This piece was sold to a collector shortly after completion.

Charcoal Drawings CHARCOAL ON PAPER

SUSAN GOLDSMITH- DRAWING STUDIO 2010 A selection of charcoal drawings I have created. Charcoal is one of my favourite mediums because of its high versatility of use. It is also one of the most ancient drawing mediums known to humans with evidence of its use as far back as 30 000 years ago. It can be used to do fine lines or broad areas. One technique I employ is filling the paper with charcoal and then erasing away the image creating a negative image which conveys powerful emotions through high contrast images. From left to right: Nude Figure, Self-Portrait, Male Figure, Reclining Nude

PLASTIC BOX

PLASTIC BAGS OVER WIRE FRAME ZEKE MOORES- SCULPTURE STUDIO 2013

This piece is designed to bring attention to our overconsumption of plastic in the world that is bringing environmental disaster. For example, the great garbage patch in the North Pacific Gyre. The box is reminiscent of a crab fisherman’s trap, however instead of sealife, the cage brings up a bountiful harvest of plastic bags.

THE CITY OF CHAMPIONS WEBSITE

PERSONAL PROJECT 2015 The City of Champions was a personal project I undertook in early 2015. I felt that the Detroit/ Windsor area as a community was drastically underrepresented despite having a wealth of culture, cuisine and beautiful architecture. The City of Champions was a blog named after an old nickname for Detroit and sought to bring to attention great restaurants, events and other things to do and see. It also served to showcase some of the local history of the region. The site currently enjoys around 3000 visits per month.

NOON

A building study done in two points in the City of Volterra. The same cityscape was photographed at various times of day. Using a digital eyedropper tool, colours were pulled out of various material details and compared over the course of the day. The result is that all the materials changed dramatically in colour over a period of one day.

CONTEMPLATIVE CENTRE FOAMCORE

VERONIKA MOGYORODY- 1st YEAR STUDIO 2010 The first studio project I ever did for university, the contemplative space sets a precendent for many of my future designs. We were tasked with designing a space that contained a public, semi-private, and a private space. The building was to be built on the campus of the University of Windsor. In this building, people enter through the large covered entrance which doubles as a public gathering space. The lobby of the building serves as the public space. People can then go upstairs and across the hall into the second space of the building which features a more private atmosphere. Finally in a balcony adjoining the upstairs hall, is a private space that overlooks the semi-private space.

HILL DISTRICT MIXED-USED PLAN MIXED MATERIALS

TADD HEIDGERKEN- 2nd YEAR STUDIO 2013 The Hill District of Pittsburgh is on the fringes of the city; people here live in near poverty and as a result there is little community infrastructure in the neighbourhood: to provide a community centre, housing for different people ranging from students to professionals and to combine them in one building. The site is situated on a steep hillside. I decided to celebrate Pittsburgh’s coal mining heritage by putting most of the functions of the building underground. The living spaces are all on the surface so as to allow natural light and fresh air to reach them. The community centre pool celebrates the rock it is built in and features waterfalls and exposed rock from the hillside. The surface structures are inspired by the surrounding neighbourhood where buildings have been added onto in a pathwork fashion over the years. Entry into the buiding is via a bicycle ramp that leads into the basement of the building, or a lobby entrance off the street.

WINDSOR ART SCHOOL MIXED MATERIALS

TADD HEIDGERKEN- 2nd YEAR STUDIO 2013 Situated in Downtown Windsor, this building occupies what is currently a parking lot, and converts it into an art school. Three different schools were required to be built on the same site as part of a collaboration with other students, so to use the space most effciently, the schools have been stacked on top of each other. The school I worked on, the painting studio, aims to take advantage of as much natural light as possible. This is accomplished by a massive glass arcade that bows out in the direction of Detroit, creating a master studio/exhibition space. The studio also aims to incorporate nature as much as possible and garden features can be found on all floors as well as a green wall on the west wall.

EUROPEAN UNION CULTURAL CENTRE SKETCHUP MODEL & RENDERINGS ANNA GRABOWSKA- 3rd Year Studio 2013

The EU Cultural Centre is located on the banks of the Detroit River by Milliken State Park. Its intention is to serve as an ambassador to the city of Detroit and create a cultural exchange between America and Europe. Between this and its location, the building is inspired by nautical themes- a nod to the first connections between the two continents by sail. The centre also strives to engage with the natural prairie of the nearby park and expands upon it. This is exemplified by a berm wall which serves as a reference to historical fortresses built by the Europeans centuries ago that served as a toehold on North America. The building features a large festival ground within its courtyard that is sheltered from the harsh winds in the area. Within, there is an exhibition space as well as an informatorium. The centre also seeks to connect downtown Detroit to the recently constructed Outdoor Adventure Center by encouraging the movement of people throughout the space.

STEPHEN VOGEL- 2nd Year Studio 2012 An expansion on a much bigger project to daylight a buried creek running through Detroit. What was a former residential block will be converted in an urban farm. We were tasked with designing each building on the farm including the barn, greenhouse, farmhouse and a bridge across the creek. Finally all the buildings were assembled together on a master site plan for the farm.

FONTI DI DOCCIOLA MIXED MEDIA

WILL WITTIG- 4th Year Studio 2015 The Fonti di Docciola is an overlooked space in Volterra, Italy- it is within the city walls, but it is down a steep valley and is now adjacent to a parking lot. The presence of water here made this an important place historically. I proposed an art installation that would breath new energy into the site. Envisioning a glass roof with a pond built over the space to create a fantastical underwater atmosphere. This project required research into structural glass to ensure the success of the structure.

BLACKBOX THEATRE MIXED MEDIA

STEPHEN VOGEL- Integrated Studio 2015 As part of our Integrative Design Studioone in which we design all aspects of the building; from the floorplans, down to the mechanical systems, we were tasked with designing a blackbox theatre. This is a theatre that is essentially a theatre space that can be repurposed in a variety of uses and configurations. This building was proposed for the vacant lot across Livernois from UDM Campus.

UDM 50TH ANNIVERSARY PAVILLIONS SKETCHUP RENDERING

ANNA GRABOWSKA- 3rd Year Studio 2013 The University of Detroit Mercy’s School of Architecture recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. To mark the occasion we were tasked with designing a pavillion on campus where festivities would be held. I based my design on the roots of architecture, studying the plans of ancient cities and then superimposing this into an area on campus. The yellow blocks would be spaces where architects and artists would be invited to transform into their own spaces for the event. After the festivities, the spaces would be converted into raised garden beds to mark the legacy of the event.

PIAZZA XX SETTEMBRE SKETCHUP RENDERING

WILL WITTIG- 4th Year Studio 2015 Piazza Settembre is a relatively unremarkable space compared to the rest of Volterra, Italy. We were tasked with reenergizing the space by building a restaurant and market in the space. A few living spaces would be built as well. Important things to this project were to prevent disruption to the view of the valley from the Piazza as well as retaining and increasing the amount of green space on the site. The result is a building that is built into the hill. The roof of which becomes the piazza featuring a maze of berms which would be turned into a forest garden over time. The space celebrates the underground with unique entranceways into the space as well as skylights to allow visitors to look down into the space.

URBAN COOLING STATION

WOOD, PLASTIC SHEET, PLUMBING DORIAN MOORE- GREEN CORRIDOR 2012

During the summer, people will often opt to drive in an air-conditioned car rather than walk the hot city streets. By placing a series of cooling stations at regular intervals, walking would be made easier and encourage people to walk rather than drive. The cooling station would gather rain water in a reservoir and would then mist whenever motion was detected inside and powered by solar panels. The stations would also serve as a small community gathering space as it is complemented by a patio.

FULL CONSTRUCTION PERSONAL PROJECT 2011

My own residence in Windsor that we renovated. I oversaw much of the design and construction. The house was originally a Four-Square house built around WW1. By the time we had acquired it, the house had been severely neglected prompting us to completely renovate it. We completely rebuilt the house leaving only the original wood structure. The roof was rebuilt to increase space on the third floor and the basement was lowered to accomodate more headroom. For the exterior cladding, we chose a combination of roughsawn pine and sheet metal. The backyard was also relandscaped so that half of the property has now been renaturalized. The house is an ongoing project.

WOOD FURNITURE RECLAIMED WOOD PERSONAL PROJECTS 2009-PRESENT

Since high school I have made various woodworking projects, focusing on furniture building. All of my pieces use reclaimed wood or sustainably sourced materials. Box 4/17: Using parts of a shipping crate I assembled a footstool. I tried to celebrate the wood’s previous life as a crate. Dining Table with Planter: Using a combination of walnut, ash and poplar; this dining table is intended to house plants in the centre. Elm Coffee Table: This table featured a heavy slab of reclaimed elm with live edges. I attempted to celebrate the elm by doing as little as possible to the slab itself. The structure is made of wood salavaged from a construction site. Walnut Cutting Boards: A recent project involving boards of walnut shaped into various cutting boards. They were finished with a homemade beeswax and oil treatment. I created a custom tag for them as well.

EAST JEFFERSON VILLAGES CATALYST PROJECT MIXED MEDIA

CEARA O’LEARY- CO-OP WORK TERMDETROIT COLLABORATIVE DESIGN CENTER 2014

A project I worked on during my co-op term. I was tasked with assisting Ceara in revitalizing the East Jefferson corridor on Detroit’s east side. I was tasked with designing a beer garden fence that doubled as seating for an event done as part of the Detroit Design Festival. This project tested my ability to work under tight budgetary constraints as well as to take a CAD model and make it into reality.
