KUCHOIRS
If you are passionate about singing, KU has a choir for you! Ensembles are open by audition to all students at the University, regardless of major. Whether you are an accomplished singer or someone seeking to develop and refine your vocal abilities, you will find a place in one of our choirs. KU choirs perform various concerts throughout the school year, and combine with the Symphony Orchestra for the Holiday Vespers concert in December and a major concert in the spring semester. CHORAL ENSEMBLES BALES CHORALE Bales Chorale is a mixed ensemble of 25-30 singers specializing in the performance of sacred choral literature, with emphasis on choral works with organ. Bales Chorale is led by graduate students enrolled in the Doctor of Musical Arts degree program in church music. All Bales Chorale performances are presented in the Bales Organ Recital Hall. CHAMBER SINGERS Chamber Singers is a mixed ensemble of 24 to 30 voices, comprised mainly of graduate students and advanced juniors and seniors. Singers are selected based on their ability and come from many disciplines across the University. Membership in Chamber Singers requires a high level of musicianship, outstanding sight-reading skills, and a serious dedication to the choral arts. Chamber Singers performs regularly throughout each semester and is the main touring choir at KU. COLLEGIUM MUSICUM Collegium Musicum is a 12-20 member mixed chamber ensemble specializing in early choral literature. This ensemble combines with the KU Instrumental Collegium Musicum for at least one performance each semester. Collegium Musicum is typically led by a doctoral student in choral conducting. CONCERT CHOIR Concert Choir is the largest mixed choral ensemble at KU, comprised of up to 70 singers. This ensemble performs works that span the entire breadth of the choral literary tradition, and requires an advanced level of musicianship and ensemble skills. The Concert Choir performs literature for larger ensembles, at times featuring music for double-chorus. Members of this ensemble also belong to the Symphonic Chorus.
MEN’S GLEE CLUB As the oldest continuous choral ensemble at KU, the Men’s Glee Club is an ensemble of 25-50 men. The group performs a wide variety of choral repertoire, ranging from standard classical literature to KU fight songs, and performs for special engagements off campus. The members of the Men’s Glee Club also belong to the Symphonic Chorus. UNIVERSITY SINGERS University Singers is a large mixed chorus of 45-60 undergraduate voices that performs a variety of choral literature, while concentrating on basic ensemble and musicianship skills. Members of University Singers also perform with the Symphonic Chorus. WOMEN’S CHORALE Women’s Chorale is a ensemble of 35-45 women who specialize in the performance of a wide variety of music for treble voices. The members of the Women’s Chorale also participate in the Symphonic Chorus. SYMPHONIC CHORUS The KU Symphonic Chorus is comprised of at least five of the choral ensembles at KU. The group, which can number between 150 to 200 students, performs each semester with the Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the official choral ensembles at KU, there are a number of student-led ensembles including: Gospel Choir, Jewish Choir and a cappella ensembles. These student-led ensembles provide opportunities to focus on specific styles of music.
