2015-16
FROM THE
DIRECTOR OF BANDS
Jayhawks and friends, Greetings from Mt. Oread! We are looking ahead to a terrific year of music making and teaching at the University of Kansas Bands! This year we are again hosting KU Band Day, Heart of America Marching Festival, the Prairie Winds Festival, and KSHSAA large ensemble festival on campus. We’ll also feature several composers-in-residence with the KU Bands, including Ostwald Award winner Aaron Perrine, Joni Greene, Christopher Stark, Joel Puckett, and James Barnes. Several performances will feature world premieres. The KU Wind Ensemble will celebrate the release of “Bliss” on the Ecstatic label distributed worldwide by Naxos. The CD features the music of Michael Torke, with other tracks from the Quad City Symphony, the Liverpool Philharmonic, and others. KUWE will also record their sixth CD on the Naxos Wind Band Classics label this year for a 2016-17 release date. Our featured soloists include KU’s own Margaret Marco, oboe, and Jeff Nelsen, former horn player with the Canadian Brass. Thanks to generous support of Reach Out Kansas, Inc, at this year’s Prairie Winds Festival, we have very special guests Delfeayo Marsalis, trombone, and KU alumnus Jon Lewis, the principal trumpet player on the new Star Wars soundtrack.
Please save the date – Sunday, October 11, 2015 for our special Leonard Bernstein Celebration concert at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in KC, MO! This special event will be FREE thanks again to the support of Reach Out Kansas, Inc. and James Zakoura. We’ll share ticketing information with you as it becomes available. As always we continue to develop our KU Bands Endowment Fund - the purpose of which is to provide student and operational support for the various groups who find their home in the KU Band Program. It is our desire to build this fund into a multi-million dollar endowment that will ensure the long-term financial stability of the band. If you would like to contribute to this, or any other band fund, please contact us in the Band Office and we can connect you to our friends in Endowment. With dwindling funding from the state, your support of the KU Band is so crucial for our continued success! Finally, I would like to invite you to attend our performances this year at the Lied Center, the Kauffman Center, Memorial Stadium, or Allen Fieldhouse! A full listing of our exciting upcoming season is on the reverse side of this newsletter, and season tickets are now available. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
