THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS SCHOOL OF MUSIC Winter 2016
Faculty NEWS Abbey Dvor ak, assistant professor of music education and music therapy, recently presented at the American Music Therapy Association National Conference in Sandusky, Ohio. Her presentations included an AMTA Research Committee Presents invited presentation Student Engagement in Research: Developing Skills through Experiential Learning, and a presentation with music therapists Deborah Spiegel, Lindsey Landeck, and Marie Lesiak called DBT-Informed Music Therapy: Clinical Interventions and Research Applications. In addition, Kendall Joplin, MME ‘16 and MT-BC, and Dvorak had the paper “A Survey Exploring the Current State of Censorship in Adult Psychiatric Music Therapy Practice” accepted for publication in Music Therapy Perspectives. Sar ah Frisof, associate professor of flute, was a guest artist on the New York Flute Club series, presenting a recital on Dec. 4. In November,
she performed Joel Puckett’s Shadow of Sirius Concerto with the Dallas Winds in the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Also, Frisof, Vince Gnojek, professor of saxophone, Eric Stomberg, professor of bassoon, and Stephanie Zelnick, associate professor of clarinet, presented clinics to the woodwind students at F.L. Schlagle High School in the Kansas City, Kansas school district on Nov. 18. Band director Reginald May hosted the group. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about their instruments from woodwind specialists. In October, Dan Gailey, director of jazz studies, performed as a featured guest artist and gave master classes at the China Modern Jazz Education
Festival in Shanghai and the Hong Kong International Jazz Education Festival. The China Modern Jazz Education Festival took place at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with a final performance at the Shanghai Centre Theatre that also included NEA Jazz Master and legendary saxophonist Dave Liebman. Also that month, Gailey was composer-in-residence and guest conductor with the University of New Hampshire’s 3 O’Clock Jazz Band. The residency included the world premiere of his new composition Broken Cycles, which was commissioned by UNH as part of the Seiler Commissioning Project. Nate Jorgensen, BM ‘99 and DMA ‘10 in saxophone, is the director of jazz studies at UNH. In August, Gailey was commissioned to write a big band arrangement of Bill Evans’ composition Very Early for Grammy-winning clarinetist Eddie Daniels. He conducted the premiere performance of the arrangement at ClarinetFest 2016 at the Lied Center with Daniels performing with an allstar big band. Melissa Gr ady, assistant professor of music education and music therapy, conducted the South Central KMEA Women’s

Honor Choir on Dec. 3. Grady taught public school in the South Central district for 11 years, so it was an opportunity to work with her former district. Christopher Johnson, professor of music education and music therapy, presented the paper Impact of Music Program Participation on Students’ School Engagement Academic Success: The Use of Structural Equation Modeling to Investigate Theoretically Causative Relationships at the 2016 World Arts Education Summit in Hangzhou, China.
Paul W. Popiel, director of bands, conducted the high school honor band at the University of Central Arkansas on Dec. 1 and 2. He also gave a rehearsal clinic to the Blue Valley West High School Wind Ensemble prior to their shared concert with the KU Wind Ensemble at the Lied Center on Nov. 9. Popiel’s concert with the KU Wind Ensemble featured soloists Joey Tartell on trumpet and Han Wang on piano, as well as music by composer-in-residence Kevin Walczyk. Ketty Wong, associate professor of ethnomusicology, presented the paper Ballroom Dancing in China: Sport or Social Dance? Sinification of a Western Dance Expression at the Society for Ethnomusicology Annual Meeting held in Washington, D.C. from Nov. 10 to 13. She also chaired the session of the Latin American and Caribbean section.
Debr a Hedden, professor of music education and music therapy, doctoral student Jenny Potter and undergraduate student K atie Jacobsen directed the KU Youth Chorus for a performance during the Chancellor’s Holiday Reception on Dec. 15 at the Adams Alumni Center. Martin Nedbal, assistant professor of musicology, published the paper “František Šír’s First Czech Translation of Mozart’s Final Opera Buffa and the Reception of Così fan tutte in Prague 1791-1831,” in the Czech theater studies journal Czech Theater Review. Part of the article is an edition of the first Czech translation of Lorenzo da Ponte’s Così fan tutte. The translation was thought to be lost, and Nedbal transcribed it from an old manuscript conducting score, possibly used by Mozart himself in 1791, that he discovered in a Prague archive. Br ad Osborn, assistant professor of music theory, has been named the KU Center for Undergraduate Research’s featured mentor. Mentoring two firstgeneration college students through the Emerging Scholars program, Osborn collaborates with these students to analyze visual and musical elements in 1990s music videos. Colin Roust, assistant professor of musicology, gave two invited lectures in Upstate New York. He spoke on An Ultramodernist Goes Pop: Georges Auric and Pop Culture from the 1950s to the 1970s on the Musicology Colloquium Series at the University at Buffalo and Georges Auric and the Transformations of Copyright Law, 1945–1978 on the Musicology Colloquium Series at SUNY Fredonia.

Associate professor of clarinet Stephanie Zelnick’s new fulllength album Diversions, released this year, was reviewed in The Clarinet, a International Clarinet Association journal. Among the accolades given, the review noted “the Poulenc Sonata here displays Zelnick’s crystal clear tone and beautifully shaped phrases. The delicate passages of the ‘Romanza’ movement are navigated with seamless legato and are beautifully expressive, yet stylistically fitting.” Also praised was Zelnick’s premiere of the clarinet arrangement of Erwin Schulhoff’s Hot Sonata, for which the reviewer noted “the meandering and casual cool that Zelnick achieves evokes the mood and feeling of a street cafe in Paris” and goes on to state “each note is shaped with care and warmth so that Zelnick’s full range of color effortlessly shines through.”
Student NEWS R affaele Cipriano, doctoral student in orchestral conducting, was the guest conductor of the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City for a “Christmas Pops” concert on Dec. 11 at the Grand Avenue Temple in Kansas City. The repertoire included Giovanni Gabrieli’s brass music for double chorus, Arcangelo Corelli Christmas Concerto for strings, and Christmas Carols for full orchestra.
