or those of you have been out of touch with the state of Medical Marijuana in the City of Los Angeles for the past few months, on February 3, 2010, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa approved Ordinance No. 181069 which is the city’s attempt to zone for Prop 215, otherwise known as the Compassionate Use Act. This Ordinance which officially went into effect on June 7th, sets forth that at the end of the day there will be no more than 70 medical marijuana collectives operating within the city and “there may be fewer.” Based on the way the Ordinance is written, it is clear that the City of Los Angeles is using its zoning ability to basically zone away Prop 215. The Ordinance refers to a list of approximately 187 dispensaries that registered their business pursuant to Interim Control Ordinance No. 179,027 with the city clerk’s office between September 14, 2007 and November 13, 2007 and will use the exact registration order to determine which of these dispensaries comprise the top 70. Dispensaries that opened prior to this date or after this date that are not on the list have been asked to close. More than 400 dispensaries received their eviction notices from the city and most have chosen to close for fear of prosecution which includes heavy fines and the possibility of going to jail. To make matters even worse, the Ordinance sets forth that there can only be a designated number of dispensaries in each Community Plan Area in the city. So for example, Van Nuys which currently has 17 collectives on the list of 187 can only have 3. Almost every area of the city currently has more dispensaries on the

More than 400 dispensaries received their eviction notices from the city... list of 187 than are allowed by the Ordinance. So even if you are on the “list”, the city expects these collectives to move, breach their current leases, abandon their current patients and look for a location that is over 1,000 feet from “a school, public park, public library, religious institution, licensed child care facility, youth center, substance abuse rehabilitation center, or any other medical marijuana collective.” Also, the new location cannot be located on a lot abutting, across the street or alley from or having a common corner with a residentially zoned lot or a lot used for residential use. Even if a collective can find a location that meets all of these zoning restrictions (good luck!), many landlords refuse to lease to medical marijuana dispensaries. The city could have “grandfathered in” these 187 dispensaries, but instead it passed an Ordinance with such excessive restrictions in the hopes that most collectives will be forced out of existence. So what does that say about the will of the people who passed Prop 215 fourteen years ago? What does this Ordinance do to assure safe access for the citizens of Los Angeles to get their medical marijuana? Where is the compassion of the city in drafting an ordinance that is forcing hundreds of businesses to close their doors, fire their employees, vacate their leases and abandon their patients in the current economy? To date, numerous lawsuits have been filed and many more are being prepared. Since so many of the dispensaries you have been patients of are either closing or moving, it is the goal of Kush Magazine and dailybuds.com to continue to keep you updated with what is going on and where to get your medicine. Stay tuned... Kush Editorial Board, www.dailybuds.com

I’m in my mid-30s and love to ski, swim, hike and play beer league softball. I’m always up to try something new. This past winter, I tried something all right. I tried snowboarding. So my friend, whom we will call Karen, because that is her name, is from Texas. She’s been around the globe and on many occasions we have talked about skiing together. In January, Karen agreed that we should make good on our promise and have a ski weekend. She would fly out, stay a long weekend and we would hit 3 different hills. Between the phone calls and emails and her actual arrival, something happened. Karen watched the Olympics and became a Shaun White disciple. (I don’t know why I didn’t see this coming, considering that every Facebook update on her page had a Photoshopped picture of her doing some mad snowboarding trick.) As a “hostess” gift, Karen decided that on day one, she would pay for an hour snowboarding lesson. I thought, “great!” There are a

For those of you unfamiliar, and I hope you are because I don’t wish this injury on anyone, the coccyx, or tailbone, is the triangular bony structure located at the bottom of the vertebral column. It is composed of three to five bony segments held in place by joints and ligaments. When an injury occurs, the result is severe localized pain or tenderness to the area. Sitting for long periods of time make it feel worse. Here it is, June and I can tell you firsthand that the pain I feel daily, is excruciating. Driving is hard. Making a U-Turn is unfathomable. Driving down a road with potholes or ruts in the road is like being beaten up by a linebacker. The pain doesn’t go away. If I sit too long, it takes all of my upper body strength to stand. the time when I got the call, that Moffatt wanted us to make the mugs. I flew over to Hawaii, and was told that we had the order, but that Tom wanted everything made in Hawaii. Since Tom wasn’t the kind of guy you said no to, and it was a tropical island that he was demanding, not some freezing tundra somewhere, I literally moved over to Maui within days, to make the Christmas gifts. While we were making the stocking stuffers, we decided to use a little of the extra gold we had and constructed our first Lavastoneware piece, which we then happily passed around at the Sunshine Festival inside Diamondhead Crater on New Years Day. As chance would have it a new magazine was about to hit the streets that would set the course for Celebrity for the next couple of decades. If you guessed correctly you know that the new magazine was High Times. And from there Celebration Pipes has never looked back. From one tiny ad in the first High Times Magazine, DaPiper and crew received over 250 pipe orders in the spring of 1974. After that the Celebration pieces started showing up regularly in green rooms at major concerts including the likes of Aerosmith, Willie Nelson, and Loggins and Messina. In hindsight maybe Lach should have called the company Celebrity Pipes. Lach an original founder of NORML in Hawaii in the 70s is still is involved with NORML today and donates to NORML fundraisers regularly, by contributing various Celebration pieces to the organiztion.

The cannabis connoisseur can choose from several finishes including Opal, Black Coral, Purple Haze or their exotic Hanalei Blue. Throughout 2010 Celebration Pipes will be dedicating 10% of it’s sales for the benefit of the “Prisoner Fund” which is being facilitated through Beverly Hills 90210 NORML. To support this effort DaPiper will be appearing at various dispensaries and doing pipe signings. To get information about DaPiper’s appearances you can go to dailybuds.com for the specifics. Celebration still makes each pipe in Maui. As DaPiper would tell you: Mahalo nui loa! For more information about Celebration Pipes or where to find one please go to www.celebrationpipes.com

by Dillion Zachara It’s that time of year when impromptu barbecues are supposed to just happen. The time when you rally up all your friends to bring food and drinks, head to the beach or park, and grill the good old fashioned way. Letting the sun warm your soul while the cool breeze blows your troubles away, at least for that day. There aren’t many more relaxing ways to spend a day and it can be one of the most peaceful settings in life. Some of my fondest memories have come from these days when nothing really matters except the people around and the food you are about to eat. Standing around the grill for hours talking about nothing in particular and debating who’s the best grill master. Public parks are also filled with stimulus to keep your eyes, ears, and nose busy. There are the birds and trees, humans with hounds, fitness freaks, young lovers, families fighting/playing, and aromas of cooking hot dogs and hamburgers, fresh grass, and Pacific Ocean. While many see barbecuing as more of a suburban thing, there are plenty of places for those of of us in the heart of the city. Los Angeles and all of Southern California are packed with wonderful places to get your BBQ on. 18 kush

A FEW THINGS TO ALWAYS REMEMBER: -Food (duh!) -Beer or wine (duh) -Rolling papers -Matches or a lighter -Coals -Cooler w/ ice -Sunscreen + Sunglasses -Proper utensils -Napkins -Sweatshirt (it can get cold!) -Games - frisbee, football, etc

BELOW ARE SOME OF THE BETTER SPOTS IN SOCAL TO GATHER FOR AN AFTERNOON BARBECUE. THIS CERTAINLY DOESN’T COVER THEM ALL, BUT ALL OF THESE ARE VERY ENJOYABLE. IS YOUR FAVORITE SPOT MISSING? LET US KNOW ON DAILYBUDS.

LEO CARRILLO

DOCKWEILER STATE BEACH

32100 PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY, MALIBU, CA

8255 VISTA DEL MAR, PLAYA DEL RAY

There aren’t barbecue pits here, but you can either bring your own or just make it a picnic day. Beautiful scenery, located right on the mother Pacific.

Dockweiler is really popular, and while barbecue pits are available, you might have to jockey to get one. In the meantime go for a swim or build a sand castle... plenty to do at the beach.

BURTON W. CHASE PARK

GRIFFITH PARK

13650 MINDANAO WAY, MARINA DEL RAY

4730 CRYSTAL SPRINGS DR., LOS ANGELES

Located smack dab in the middle of the marina with barbecue pits available and plenty of room. Always fun looking at all of the different boats in the marina!

Griffith park is probably the busiest outdoor barbecue destination in the city of LA. Located in Los Feliz, the park is beautiful and there are plenty of pits, but the traffic can be frustrating.

LAKE HOLLYWOOD PARK 3204 CANYON LAKE DR., LOS ANGELES

Right underneath the Hollywood sign there is a lake that a lot of people don’t know about. Nice setting and not too hard to get to if you’re in LA. Barbecue pits are around, but limited in numbers.

LAKE BALBOA 6300 BALBOA BLVD., VAN NUYS

A great option for those in the San Fernando Valley. Barbecue pits are aplenty and paddle boats are another fun activity here.

DOHENY STATE BEACH 25300 DANA POINT HARBOR DR., DANA POINT

This is a really nice spot in Orange County. It’s a good idea to double check restrictions on their website - www. dohenystatebeach.org - as they may change from time to time. Camping, picnic, and barbecue pits available in parts of the park. HUNTINGTON BEACH PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY, HUNTINGTON BEACH

Beautiful people and barbecue pits on the beach... can’t ask for much more! ROYAL PALMS STATE PARK 1799 PASEO DEL MAR, SAN PEDRO

This is a really good, somewhat isolated picnic spot, but there is no mention of barbecue pits. Not as busy as most locations, it’s a nice option for people in the South Bay. 20 kush

GLASSELL PARK 3650 VERDUGO RD., LOS ANGELES

If you’re in East Los Angeles, this park has a lot of barbecue pits and recreation options. Definitely a ‘city park’, but still relaxing enough to enjoy. YOUR BACKYARD!!! One of the best places and situations to get your BBQ on is your own backyard. Not only do you lose the worries of drinking or smoking in public, but you get to be a host! Or, if your friend decides to play host you can just gorge on food, drink, and conversation. These are really the best times, and the ones you will remember for years!

Strain review:

by DILLION ZACHARA

They say that diamonds are forever. They can cut through steel, and every girl wants one on her finger. These are all very glamorous reputations, but with this strain it’s not so straightforward. Taking a name like ‘Diamond Kush’, this strain of indica has a lot to live up to. But DK certainly didn’t last forever. With a strong buzz to start, it tapered off pretty fast, leaving us mentally and physically bored, wanting to smoke more to maintain the high. Don’t get us mixed up though, it’s a really nice high while it lasts... one of the better indicas around. It’s just really disappointing when it wears off. Something so good is hard to let slip away. The situation is sort of like when a bride thinks she’s going to get a 5 carat diamond on her wedding day and only gets a 4.5 carat rock. 4.5 is still pretty legit and hard to complain about, but the expectation was set and not met. ‘Diamond Kush’ sets a pretty high expectation, almost meets it or does for a short period, and then leaves all the magic at the alter. But Diamond Kush does have it’s place in your medicine cabinet. It’s always nice to have a variety available, and having a short term buzzer on hand can be a perfect fit for many situations. Say for example you only have a half hour before you need to drive somewhere, this strain will be mostly leveled off by then. And then when it does wear off, it’s actually a real nice state of equilibrium. DK should provide a nice balance to your creeper strains. 26 kush

This particular batch of Diamand Kush wielded an intoxicatingly sweet smell, with a matching sweet taste that seemed a nice fit to it’s name. With a shimmery white coating of crystals, it looked like it had been rolled in sugar and then glazed. Very light and fluffy buds that seemed to smoke much faster than we had anticipated. A nice amount of orange hairs were also sprinkled amongst the snowy landscape to offer some color diversity. Overall, Diamond Kush offers a pleasantly strong indica high that doesn’t take long to smoke and doesn’t take long to peak. The smell, taste, and other physical characteristics are all very enticing, but they don’t last for long. The price should average around $60/ eighth, which usually lands the on the higher end of the price scale. Is it worth it? We’ll probably go for a cheaper, longer lasting strain next time. DK is a very nice experience, but with so many great strains out there it’s good to keep shopping around.

by CHARLOTTE CRUZ In 2009, 45 states reported “water stressed” conditions. Water conservation is something we should think about every day and now that summer is here, it’s more important than ever to save. It is essential to life on this planet that we protect our most important resource and simple changes you can make to our daily routines are an important contribution that we can’t afford not to make. Water conservation is free and easy. If you choose to put a little money into the effort, there are extremely inexpensive options that can save you in the long run. It’s always a good idea to check in and make sure we are doing all we can to keep our water clean and protect our precious resources. #1 Washing machines and dishwashers use a lot of water and it is estimated that you can save 1,000 gallons a month by only doing full loads. If you hand wash dishes, make sure that you fill the sink rather than letting the water run as you wash. #2 Limit showers to 5 minutes or less, suggests AmericanWater.com. Purchase a low-flow showerhead for better water savings. When bathing, fill the tub only 1/3 full instead of filling it to the top. You also can save water by not flushing the toilet every time it is used. Some people might cringe, but there really is no need to flush every time. The old standard, “If it’s yellow, it’s mellow. ... If it’s brown, flush it down” is a good gauge for determining how often to flush. Don’t allow water to gush from the faucet when shaving or brushing your teeth. #3 When caring for your lawn, try to water in the morning or evening when evaporation is minimized. If you live in a climate where it rains in the summer, set out a few rain barrels and use the rainwater to water your lawn during dry spells. If you wash your dog, pick a spot in your yard that needs water. Consider planting ground cover that doesn’t need a lot of water. You can also have a plumber reroute your grey water to service your lawn if it’s allowed in your city. Make sure to monitor your sprinklers and hoses for cracks or leaks to avoid unwanted water loss. #4 Wash your car at a carwash that uses recycled water. Washing your car at home once a week can waste as much as 500 gallons a month. If your driveway gets dirty or dusty, take the opportunity to get a little exercise and sweep the driveway. #5 Low-flow aerators and showerheads can save as much as 150 gallons of water a day in an average household. They require no tools and can be purchased at any home improvement or hardware store. Tank banks are low cost, high efficiency options for the waste of water that toilets produce. You can essentially retrofit your home to save water for under $50. 30 kush

It’s June and the soon-to-be All-Stars are starting to shine and the teams are starting to show what they’re made of. There are already some surprises and talks of trades are starting to swarm around the water cooler. Baseball season is in full swing and fans are ready for their teams to get hot. For the avid fan, and I definitely include myself in that group, every game is important and we rarely if ever miss a broadcast. Unfortunately, teams get days off and on those dark days, what is 40 kush

a baseball fan to do to satisfy the need for shut-outs and deep flies? I wouldn’t dream of watching another team’s game, so I go to the DVD player and pop in a baseball flick. On my teams last off day, I made a mental compilation of my favorite movies about America’s pastime. My top 10 are here for you to argue. No matter what you decide about my choices, each one of these films is worth seeing and even owning.

the es? m’s na ade ies ere ide s is

Someday people will walk down the street and say, “I saw The Natural. It is the best there ever was.” Roy Hobbs may be the best fictional baseball player there ever was and Robert Redford’s portrayal of the slugger is legendary. The drama overshadows the baseball but with the Randy Newman soundtrack and the blood soaked shirt, it’s homerun every time.

This is my sentimental favorite because of the real life story of Jim Morris, the high school science teacher who saw his major league dream realized on a dare and an alignment of stars. Dennis Quaid plays Morris and does so with such believability as a pitcher that you wonder what his radar gun would register. With the plot of the laboring Owls ( high school team Morris coached) making it to district and the aging teacher tossing 97MPH fastballs with no good explanation, the Rookie is walk off.

Tatum O’ Neil and Robert Matthau won my heart as a small child and never lost it. These Bears are the quintessential misfits that all misfits aspire to. Beer drinking manager, foul mouthed kids and the savior Kelly smoking on his motorcycle makes the Bad News Bears a 3-2 come from behind win in the bottom of the 9th.

This was Geena Davis’s finest hour for sure. The best baseball movies are the true stories and the All American Girls Baseball League that inspired Penny Marshall’s tale of the women who got the chance to pay pro ball during wartime is a gem. With the exception of the stupid song and singing in the clubhouse, this movie is near perfect and it’s my favorite Tom Hanks performance of all time. Penny Marshall’s no hitter.

I saw this movie for the first time about 2 years ago and it quickly made my list of favorites. This is Billy Crystal’s labor of love and his admiration for the game translates well to the script and the screen. The story is of the 1961 Yankees and Roger Maris and Mickey Mantel’s race to beat Babe Ruth’s single season home run record. The film digs into the off the field lives of both Mantel and Maris and shows the human side of two of baseball’s best all-time players. A home stand sweep. *Mark McGuire should be forced to watch this movie daily.

I laughed, laughed and then laughed some more at Albert Brook’s portrayal of a Yankee’s scout who is banished to Mexico as punishment for a bad signing. He discovers Steve Nebraska, a pitcher who blows away hitters with a 100MPH fastball and hits like Ty Cobb. Once a Yankee, Nebraska shows signs of emotional

instability and starts seeing a shrink named Dr. H. Aaron (Dianne Weist). A laugher from moment one.

“If you build it, they will come” has become a national motto. The fantasy story of the Iowa farmer’s journey to uncover secret messages that lead to the return of Shoeless Joe Jackson and other players including Ray Kinsella’s father is inspiring and totally masterful fantasy. The best farm team in the league.

Kevin Costner is Mr. Baseball Movie and this may be the most authentic baseball movie on the list. The minor leagues are a strange and wonderful place that is portrayed in its real and brutal light. The romance between Costner and Sarandon is touching and not overstated. Tim Robbins is the perfect Rook and Costner plays the part with true heart and believability. A triple play.

You’re killing me, Smalls! These neighborhood kids may be in second place behind the Bad News Bears, but the charm of this movie is the group of friends who spend a summer playing ball and creating adventure after adventure. Be a kid for a couple of hours and realize how many great lines come from this movie. Rookie of the Year every year.

Kevin Costner plays a washed up, over the hill fictional pitcher, Billy Chapel, for the Detroit Tigers, about to pitch the last game of his career. As he embarks on the journey of his last game, which is apparently going to be a “Perfect Game,” he flashes back on his illustrious career and his personal love battle with his on again off again girlfriend, Jane Aubrey, played by Kelly Preston. John C. Reilly, the catcher and his best friend and team mate, craft the perfect game to create a perfect baseball movie.

KUSH: How would you describe your music? LM: Our music has been defined as “good get-high music” by legions of fans worldwide. Our music is for the people, the patients, the growers, the care-givers, the hemp believers, as well as the smokers and the tokers around the globe. Our ideology toward the plant has come a long way from our earlier music. The change was inspired by Eddy Lepp and Jack Herer the first time we went to Amsterdam for the Cannabis Cup. KUSH: What’s been the most challenging part in keeping your band alive? LM: The name “Los Marijuanos” has been the greatest challenge for the band. A lot of respectable venues wouldn’t book us, radio stations wouldn’t play us, magazines wouldn’t cover us just because the name was so similar to the word marijuana. The name and the logo with the leaf is just too inyour-face for a lot of people; especially when we were starting out. Even my own family was worried about the name. But, I never thought of changing it; it is who we are and what we represent.

KUSH: How do you feel about the regulation of medical marijuana? LM: I am in full support of medical marijuana in all states. Any measure that helps free the weed and legitimizes it for medical use is good to me. I think it’s a good place to start, but I am also in support of full legalization for everyone. As it states in the Bible, “God put every plant on this planet for us to use,” and if you look at the history of the plant, it has been a sacrament of religion and people for ages. Only recently has it been outlawed.

KUSH: What band has had the most influence on you and your bandmates? LM: Queen -- Freddy Mercury is one of my favorite vocalists ever. Bands like the Rolling Stones, The Eagles, all the classic rock and R&B artists (too many to name). Old-school hip-hop artists, like Public Enemy, RUN DMC, Total Devastation. As far as in the Marijuana Freedom Fighters, Eddy Lepp, Jack Herer, Brett Bogue, Marc Emery, Rick Simpson, Steve Hager, Tommy Chong and last, but not least, my boys from Cypress Hill. If it wasn’t for them opening the door, Los Marijuanos would have never been. Much love to B-Real and the homies, and everyone who fights to free the plant. 44 kush

KUSH: How many albums does Los Marijuanos have? LM: Puro Plieto (1999), The Smoke Out (2001), Marijuanos 4 Life (2004), 23 Biggest Tokes Greatest Hits Album (2005), Donde Esta’ mi Feria? (2007), Trippin on Tricombs (2010). KUSH: What’s next for your band? LM: Putting in mad work, my nugget. I just put the final touches on the new “Trippin’ on Tricombs” CD, set to drop in fall of 2010. Then we are playing shows in support of the new release. I got something really cool lined up with Apothecary Travel and Green House: We are hiding a “GREEN TICKET” in the new album. One lucky fan who finds the “GREEN TICKET” will win a trip to smoke and party with Los Marijuanos at the Cannabis Cup 2010 in Amsterdam, a free Zephyr Ion Vaporizer, 300 euros spending money and more! We will be performing at Tacoma Hempfest, the first Treating Yourself Expo in Toronto with the World’s Largest Vapor Dome, Seattle Hempfest, Portland Hempstalk, Detroit Hemp and Cannabis Expo on Halloween, and then back to Amsterdam for the 23rd annual Cannabis Cup! For current tour schedule, you can check us out on Myspace, Facebook or our websites: losmarijuanos4life.com or losmarijuanosmusic.com. KUSH: What else would you like our readers to know? LM: Please take the time to do your research on the marijuana movement. We need supporters to step out of the closet, register to vote, write your government officials, and make your voice known and where you stand on this movement. Innocent people are being imprisoned, families are being destroyed all for the use of a plant. We need to stop this madness and not stand for them to herd us in prison like cattle. Stand up. Free Eddy Lepp, free Marc Emery, help Rick Simpson. The time for change is now. Support the movement today.

Whether you are into Rock, Country, Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, Alternative, or Techno….. enjoying outdoor summer concerts is one of the great joys of living in California, specifically in the Los Angeles / Orange County area. Being that KUSH readers are spread far and wide across So Cal, we thought we would highlight two of the areas very different concert venues - The Greek Theater, and The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. We hope with a little insight, this summer’s concerts will be safe, fun, and memorable for the right reasons. Starting with the famous Greek Theater in Los Angeles, promoted by the Nederlander family, this City run sight is part of Griffith Park, and is managed by the Parks and Recreation Dept. This means that the L.A.P.D. runs the security at the Greek, and the surrounding area. Although the Greek does allow picnicking and pre-partying, (alcohol is allowed on premises) it is still patrolled by uniformed officers, most of which are really cool. A far cry from the “storm troopers” protecting the parking lot in Irvine, and we’ll get to that….. The Greek Theater was built in 1929, and has been used for concerts and theater ever since. Nestled in the hills just under the Griffith Observatory, and styled after a Greek Temple, this 5,900 seat amphitheater has always been host to the top touring names. 48 kush

Whether it was The Grateful Dead, Elton John, or Bob Marley back in the day, to top contemporary acts like Pearl Jam, DMB, Radiohead, and The White Stripes, this award winning venue has always been a magnet for serious musical talent. Although the Greek has a relaxed vibe both inside and out, don’t push it. Beware that partaking in one’s medicinal needs is frowned upon by the teenaged ushers. They are usually pretty cool about it, and will warn you before calling the real heat over. Remember, the Greek is part of the City Park system, and there is always a concern about fires, so keep it on the low-low and there shouldn’t be a problem….. This years highlights include Yes w/ Peter Frampton on 7/9, Steve Miller Band w/ Los Lobos 7/11, MGMT on 7/16, Gipsy Kings 7/17-18, Jackson Browne w/ David Lindley 7/23, the GoGo’s w/ Red Kross 7/24, Serj Tankian 7/30, Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band 8/7, My Morning Jacket w/ Avi Buffalo 8/12, Levon Helm & Friends 8/15, the one and only Al Green 8/21, Cyndi Lauper 8/27, Funkfest w/ Morris Day 8/28, Sheryl Crow w/ Colby Caillat 9/10, the amazing Willie Nelson & Family 9/24, and The Band of Horses on 9/25. Down the 405 - about 50 miles south, you’ll find The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (formerly know as Irvine Meadows).

This legendary sight has hosted it’s fair share of great concerts. Everyone from Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Jane’s Addiction, Rage Against The Machine, The Ramones, The Beastie Boys, 311, Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden and Muse have graced the outdoor stage. The 16,085 capacity venue includes a large general admission lawn which holds around 6,000 people. This area has been known for it’s impromptu bonfires….. A natural primal reaction to great music. Unlike the “relaxed” vibe at the Greek, Verizon Wireless (or as I still call it - IRVINE) has a really uptight “police-state” working on their premises. Don’t even think about “pre-partying” in the Irvine parking lot. With Irvine Police on foot, horseback, golfcarts, and even on Segways, they are specifically out looking for party animals drinking in public. Believe me, getting a DUI at your favorite rock concert is not unimaginable there - so beware! And just so you know, the cops know all about the red Solo cup move….. Those just won‘t work in Irvine. Although it’s not as conducive for tailgating, Live Nation has really stepped up the shows being booked there, as well as their VIP experience. We called our local ticket broker Tim Donnelly from SOUTHERNSPORTSTRAVEL.COM in Costa Mesa for some further insight. KUSH asked Tim - “Tell us about Verizon

Wireless’s summer lineup?” - Tim replied, “This year is strong like most years at Irvine. Live Nation has lined up all the usual heavy hitters like RUSH, Green Day w/ AFI, Dave Matthews Band, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Kings of Leon, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, and of course, the annual return of Jimmy Buffet.” - KUSH asked, “Aren’t the Parrot Heads all drinking before the show?” - Tim chuckles, “Yes, it’s the only show that the Irvine cops don’t harass the fans at. There are just too many people out there drinking for them to do anything about. It’s the hugest party every year, and it’s a BLAST!!!!” - KUSH asked, “Tim, are there any tips you can suggest about the Verizon Wireless Amp?” - “YES! If there’s one tip about going to Irvine, it’s BUY A VIP PARKING PASS. This allows you to drive onto the actual venue’s inner property, thus allowing you to drink openly. That’s a tip for the KUSH readers only - shhhh. You see, once you drive past the gate, you can pop your trunk and open whatever container you want - NO COPS, NO DUI’s….. It’s a beautiful thing.” - KUSH asked, “So if any KUSH mag readers need help locating a VIP parking, or any other tickets this summer for Irvine, they can call you for help at 1-714-432-6462?” - Tim replied, “ABSOLUTELY! - The Greek Theater too…..I’m all about helping out KUSH magazine readers.” - Thanks Tim. kush 49

I have to admit when I first took on this story I thought it was going to be just a product review about a cool (or let’s say healthier) way to medicate. Wow was I wrong. Well not about the fact that the Magic Flight Vaporizer is a cool and healthier way to utilize medical cannabis, but about the bigger picture behind it. Fast forward, and the staff at Magic-Flight tell me about how to wrap 20 years of wood-working, engineering, philosophy, and metaphysics into a start-up MMJ venture. Magic flight is not just another vaporizer success story. I think they are really on to something. As they tell it, the backbone of Magic Flight’s success is the result of three deep but succinct statements:

Love is that which enables choice; Love is always stronger then fear; and Always choose on the basis of love. These three sentences are embedded on the bottom of every vaporizer Magic Flight produces. Yes it is a vaporizer that works phenomenally well, is easy to use, compact, portable and convenient. But these attributes are not the bragging rights Magic Flight is proud of. While the results of the thousands of hours that went into the engineering feat is impressive, even greater consideration has been given to company operations and especially customer service and warranties. Even the company founder says that when he decided to move forward with this endeavor, that he made a conscientious decision to run his company the same way he chooses to live his life. It is all summed up on the bottom of each Magic Flight Vaporizer. www.magic-flight.com

Choosing the proper fertilizer for your particular growth is as essential as choosing which type of seed you’re starting with, where you’re growing it, and how much light and water they’ll receive. Fully understanding fertilizer’s proper use (and how much of it to use) may be half the battle in your pursuit of a fruitful yield.

Whether liquid or powder form, fertilizers act as a soil conditioner, which will improve plant growth and overall health. Which fertilizer should you use? That depends on many factors, such as soil condition, climate, the type of plant, and the water being used. Different EC values can have differing effects if dosages are miscalculated, possibly leading to over or under use of the fertilizer, leading to plant care complications. Although your plants will grow, get leafy, and bud, this over or under fertilization may cause a high salt content in the substrate. Ultimately this could lead to an overdose of nutrients, causing mold in the flowering stage, reduced levels of resistance against pests, lower yields, and possibly pose a health risk from radioactive traces in the your cannabis (from phosphate). 54 kush

Fertilizing properly can make or break your growth... In order to grow large, successful marijuana plants, they’ll need a steady supply of nutrients. The amount of nutrients or fertilizer depends on the size of the plant, the pot it’s in, and the condition of the soil. Always add water when you add any nutrients or fertilizer to the soil. We recommend that you dissolve the fertilizer in the water before watering the plant. Foliar feeding, or spraying the leaves with a fertilizer solution is an ideal way of fertilizing large plants with nutrient deficiencies. Fertilizing properly can make or break your growth, so don’t take it lightly. Something that seems so simple can potentially send your plants into a botany nightmare. Like most things, if you seek out expert advice, give some TLC, and keep things simple, you should be successful. When shopping for the right fertilizer for your particular setup do some research, and get a list of questions ready for your local Hydro expert. This will bring you closer to understanding the science involved in your project. Remember that every setup is different no matter how seemingly similar. Take the extra time to research the many different products out there for your needs - and remember the only stupid question is the one never asked.

Good luck, and happy growing!! kush 55

by JAY EVANS This month we take a look at the inception of something great, innovative, and very important in so many of our lives - video games. In June of 1972, the brilliant minds of Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney created Atari Inc., and with a simple Tennis game named Pong, opened the rabbit’s hole to creative minds of many different cultures, and generations. I think it was the Hanukkah of 1975.…. We had to wait eight long days to open our big gift, but my brother and I were handsomely rewarded with an Atari Pong game system. This dinosaur in the world of “gaming”, (which wasn’t even a term then) was a marvel to be seen. It came with only the one game, as the idea of cartridges weren’t introduced until the1980 version of the Atari 2600. Imagine playing Tennis, with a video paddle, that you could actually control - on the T.V.!!!!! As a six year old, this was about the greatest thing since the hand break was added to the Big Wheel. Life was pretty good in the ‘70’s. As Big Wheels turned to BMX, so did the advancements of video games, and the advent of the local arcade. With stand up machines, and sit down table-tops, Atari was making most of the favorites at the time, like Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Frogger, Lunar Lander, Missile Command, Centipede, and the classic, Asteroids. Anyone growing up in the Valley during the 80’s remembers 20 Grand Palace, the arcade featured in the movie War Games, or the now closed Malibu Grand Prix. For adolescents and adults alike, these places provided an escape from the regular world. A place where one could Joust on top of a huge flying ostrich, or go to battle on the Frontline, or 56 kush

capture laser beams, in the future of Tron. Even for those casually involved, video games have been a great source of entertainment since the beginning, and the trend seems to be growing. As joysticks and toggle switch triggers have advanced, so has the world of video games. Now that the virtual world they spoke of is here, games like Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto, Halo, and Call Of Duty are leading the pack. With so many start up electronic game companies on the market, and industry numbers exceeding those of the film industry, it seems that the creators of Atari were on to something. Whatever success the industry has seen, rests on the shoulders of these pioneers. So whether it’s paddles and popsicle sticks, or virtual game rooms with just you and your Sheldon Black Bong as protection, let’s remember a time gone by. A bit more innocent, and a lot less bloody - at least virtually….

7.9.10Ê @Ê TheÊ Echoplex

New York based gypsy punk troupe Gogol Bordello is undeniably one of the funnest, most enjoyable shows on the road. With around 10 members performing in their live act, there is no certainly no lack of enthusiasm. They have released 5 fulllength albums to date, their latest being Trans-Continental Hustle released in April, so they have tons of material to work from. The gypsy travelers play two dates in June and we highly suggest that you make it to one of these nights.

Ariel Pink has been called lo-fi, freak folk, avant-garde, chillwave, and psychedelic pop... just to name a few. Whatever the hell you call his music, it sounds like it was recorded back in the 50’s or 60’s. The band’s live performance will sound significantly crisper than what you’ll here off of their latest album, Before Today. A local of Los Angeles, Ariel Pink brings his show to the Echoplex for what will likely be a packed house. Buy your tickets in advance!

LaÊ RouxÊ 7.15.10Ê @Ê ClubÊ NokiaÊ Ê

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are a funk/soul group driven by the sounds of the genre’s heyday in the 60’s and 70’s. It’s heart clenching music that transports you back to a time when this sound was really transforming America. They are touring in support of their most recent album, I Learned The Hard Way, a title that is representative of Jones’ lyrics of lost love and heartache. Her beautiful and powerful voice will fill you with nostalgia and pull your heart strings all night long at the Wiltern.

La Roux -- the bulletproof, wild woodpecker, red-headed Brit -- has exploded onto the scene over the past year with appearances on MTV and performances at big venues in every city. Their electro flavored synthpop paired with lead singer Eleanor Jackson’s distinct voice make for an unforgettable show that will definitely make you dance. They’re bouncing all around the world this summer, but may not make it back to Los Angeles for a while, so don’t miss this!

Fools are sure to be pitied in the remake of the popular 80s TV show ‘The A Team’. The new film is slated to be a much grittier version of the original show, in order to be more in tune with today’s audience. That said people looking for a stroll down memory lane with their favorite characters are sure to get the occasional nod as well. Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson and Sharlto Copley are playing Face, Hannibal and Howling Mad respectively, with former UFC fighter Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson taking on the role of B.A. Baracus.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up for the first time since ‘Vanilla Sky’ for this action/comedy flick. Diaz plays a normal woman who gets caught up with a dangerous, if not lighthearted spy played by Cruise. The two are thrown into wild and dangerous situations where they must work together despite Diaz’s complete lack of knowledge in the field. If you are a fan of movies like ‘True Lies’ or ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ this might be worth checking out. It releases on June 25.

The film opened on June 11.

Five massive comedy names make up the cast in this summer comedy. As kids, the five main characters were good friends and basketball team mates. When their former coach dies, the friends decide to get together with their families for a Fourth of July weekend.

Despicable Me is an animated family picture about Gru (played by Steve Carrell) a villain who plans to steal the moon. Gru leads an army of cutesy little minions, and hopes to surpass his villain rival, Vector. One day Gru meets three orphan girls who want him to become their father and he must adjust to a new life.

Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider all star in the film alongside some other equally large names.

This is sure to be a solid picture that you can take the whole family to enjoy; with morals and lessons wrapped in a slick 3D package.

One thing is for sure, if the movie turns out half as good as it’s cast’s credentials it’s sure to be a winner. It comes out on June 25.

The movie is set to come out on July 9.

The newest film vampire romance Twilight series is almost upon us. Edward, Bella and Jacob are back in this third installment of the wildly popular Twilight series. In Eclipse, Bella the leading lady, finds herself in trouble. As it turns out, when you are in a tight spot, being pretty close with a vampire and a werewolf can be pretty handy.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this cerebral science fiction thriller from Christopher Nolan the director of Dark Knight, Insomnia and Momento. DiCaprio plays a man who works for a company that infiltrates the human conscious as a person sleeps, while the mind is vulnerable. While there, he either retrieves secrets from that person’s mind or in the case of an inception, plants a new idea in the victim’s thoughts. This movie hits theaters on July 16.

If you’re a fan, you already know this probably, but the film debuts on June 30.
