ummertime – the 4th of July, longer days, BBQs, baseball games, lazy afternoons ... this is what July means too many of our readers. In the month that we celebrate our independence, spending time with family and friends – we should reflect upon how far we have come as a nation. Fourteen states recognize marijuana as a medicinal drug and allow for its use. Eleven more plus Washington DC have legalization of medical marijuana either as initiatives on their ballots this November or current state legislation. In California, Tax Cannabis 2010, the most far-reaching state effort ever, which would legalize the consumption of cannabis for all adults over 21(similar to alcohol consumption) — and would finally take marijuana out of a legal gray area — will be on the November mid-term ballot. The initiative still defers to local control, meaning that cities and counties can decide whether to allow regulated marijuana sales at all, and if so, how that would work. Tax Cannabis allows for the personal consumption, possession and cultivation of cannabis by any adult over 21 throughout the state, but the business of it would be left to local jurisdictions. Local jurisdictions and the cities in the county of San Diego area still maintain the control over the zoning and use of properties that provide medical marijuana. Many dispensaries have learned the hard way, having to close their doors and move to different locations due to zoning

...we might truly be able to have more freedom of choice than we ever anticipated. ordinances. The latest proposed zoning law in San Diego, will prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries from locating in residential areas or within 1,000 feet of schools, playgrounds, libraries, churches, parks and places where children frequent. Medical marijuana storefronts would also be barred from locating within 1,000 feet of each other. Further proposed guidelines would require background checks on all medical marijuana dispensary employees; mandate that the collectives operate as nonprofit organizations; restrict access to those under 18; and prohibit consultations by physicians on site. These proposed regulations reflect the suggestions made by the 11-member Medical Marijuana Task Force established by the city last September to manage the use of medical marijuana and to control the proliferation of dispensaries in San Diego. As of the printing of this magazine, both ordinances will be considered by the full San Diego City Council at the same hearing, but a date has not yet been set. So as you enjoy your 4th of July celebration and the hot summer days to follow, remember even in the land of the free there are regulations – some good, some restrictive. All in all, we are far better off than we were 234 years ago, and if we work together and express ourselves in the upcoming November election, we might truly be able to have more freedom of choice than we ever anticipated. We do have the power. We do have the choice! RIDE THE WAVE OF THE MOVEMENT! Kush Editorial Board, www.dailybuds.com

I’m in my mid-30s and love to ski, swim, hike and play beer league softball. I’m always up to try something new. This past winter, I tried something all right. I tried snowboarding. So my friend, whom we will call Karen, because that is her name, is from Texas. She’s been around the globe and on many occasions we have talked about skiing together. In January, Karen agreed that we should make good on our promise and have a ski weekend. She would fly out, stay a long weekend and we would hit 3 different hills. Between the phone calls and emails and her actual arrival, something happened. Karen watched the Olympics and became a Shaun White disciple. (I don’t know why I didn’t see this coming, considering that every Facebook update on her page had a Photoshopped picture of her doing some mad snowboarding trick.) As a “hostess” gift, Karen decided that on day one, she would pay for an hour snowboarding lesson. I thought, “great!” There are a

For those of you unfamiliar, and I hope you are because I don’t wish this injury on anyone, the coccyx, or tailbone, is the triangular bony structure located at the bottom of the vertebral column. It is composed of three to five bony segments held in place by joints and ligaments. When an injury occurs, the result is severe localized pain or tenderness to the area. Sitting for long periods of time make it feel worse. Here it is, June and I can tell you firsthand that the pain I feel daily, is excruciating. Driving is hard. Making a U-Turn is unfathomable. Driving down a road with potholes or ruts in the road is like being beaten up by a linebacker. The pain doesn’t go away. If I sit too long, it takes all of my upper body strength to stand. On a scale of 1-10, the pain is a 12.

by ELIZABETH JACKSON Legal Cannabis Institute sits on a quiet commercial industrial street in Mira Mesa. At 9AM there is sudden activity as the start of Saturday classes begin. Cars fill the parking lot and people are preparing for a day of learning. Students line up in the waiting room to get through registration, get their syllabus and head down the hall to a spacious classroom. First up for the day is Medical Marijuana Law taught by Roger Brown, Esq. The class is filled with people from all walks of life. The stereotypical tie dyed t-shirt crowd, the semi-retired couple looking to start a new business, the laid-off engineer seeking work, the realtor that wants to start growing, the doctor thinking about starting a mmj practice, three college friends starting a delivery service together and many more. Marijuana has hit the mainstream. The green rush is on. The students listen intensely as Roger Brown leads them through the maze of federal, state and local cannabis laws. One student asks if they can smoke marijuana on a boat. Brown replies, “Yes as long as you are not operating the boat.” Everyone laughs. Brown also says that according to SB420 you can have 12 immature or 6 mature cannabis plants. A student asks the obvious question. Brown says, “Yes, they are assuming you will kill six or that you are a very bad grower.” Brown is well versed on marijuana law and now I am too. The class ends and the students take a break. Three students go outside for a cigarette and a conversation about starting a delivery service. How do you protect yourself if you cannot carry a gun? How do you weigh out the cannabis and not carry a scale? Do you want to get the county marijuana id card or not? And the conversation continues back into the classroom. Next up is Kimberly Simms, Esq. with her topic, “How to Start a Collective or Delivery Service.” Ms. Simms teaches for three hours about business set-up, CPA information, and the day-to-day operations of a canna-business. Kimberly Simms, nicknamed by the other staff members as “dream-killer,” tells the students, “If you have not come to peace with the idea of spending some time behind
14 kush
bars, this is not the profession for you.” She is both hilarious and frightening. Simms also tells students to follow all state laws and not to “hide the ball” from the state. She also says, “Play by the rules and don’t gamble by finding the loopholes.” There is a lot to know to start a marijuana business correctly. Legal Cannabis Institute offers 11 courses for the cannabis connoisseur and anyone who is thinking about getting into the business. The next class is Grow -- Part 1 with Tommy Magee. The power point presentation begins with a list of supplies and a stepby-step guide to setting-up a grow room. Magee states, “Anyone can grow, you just have to be detailed and like science.” Good to know cause it looks confusing. Many of the students have questions on this -- which medium should I grow in? How do you keep the temperature down in a room with all those lights? How much does it cost to buy my equipment? Magee answers these questions and finishes up with telling us that next week in Grow -- Part 2, we will be cutting clones from a mother plant at a collective. Now that sounds like a fun field trip! I am going to have to medicate to process all the information I am gaining. The last class of the day is the one I am most interested in: AVOID Legal Issues. Attorney Lance Rogers enters the room with a big smile asking us if we are ready to learn about how to handle law enforcement situations. I now know what to do with these questions: Can I drive from San Diego to San Francisco with my personal one pound of MMJ? What if I get pulled over? Rogers says, “No one ever thinks about what to do when police encounters occur, if you are going to be in this industry, you better understand your rights.” Rogers is smart, informative and well versed in criminal defense law. On my drive home today, I thought about all the aspects, details and laws that you must know to start a business in cannabis. My mind is spinning with all the possibilities. Maybe I just need a brownie.

Choosing the proper fertilizer for your particular growth is as essential as choosing which type of seed you’re starting with, where you’re growing it, and how much light and water they’ll receive. Fully understanding fertilizer’s proper use (and how much of it to use) may be half the battle in your pursuit of a fruitful yield.
Whether liquid or powder form, fertilizers act as a soil conditioner, which will improve plant growth and overall health. Which fertilizer should you use? That depends on many factors, such as soil condition, climate, the type of plant, and the water being used. Different EC values can have differing effects if dosages are miscalculated, possibly leading to over or under use of the fertilizer, leading to plant care complications. Although your plants will grow, get leafy, and bud, this over or under fertilization may cause a high salt content in the substrate. Ultimately this could lead to an overdose of nutrients, causing mold in the flowering stage, reduced levels of resistance against pests, lower yields, and possibly pose a health risk from radioactive traces in the your cannabis (from phosphate). 16 kush
Fertilizing properly can make or break your growth... In order to grow large, successful marijuana plants, they’ll need a steady supply of nutrients. The amount of nutrients or fertilizer depends on the size of the plant, the pot it’s in, and the condition of the soil. Always add water when you add any nutrients or fertilizer to the soil. We recommend that you dissolve the fertilizer in the water before watering the plant. Foliar feeding, or spraying the leaves with a fertilizer solution is an ideal way of fertilizing large plants with nutrient deficiencies. Fertilizing properly can make or break your growth, so don’t take it lightly. Something that seems so simple can potentially send your plants into a botany nightmare. Like most things, if you seek out expert advice, give some TLC, and keep things simple, you should be successful. When shopping for the right fertilizer for your particular setup do some research, and get a list of questions ready for your local Hydro expert. This will bring you closer to understanding the science involved in your project. Remember that every setup is different no matter how seemingly similar. Take the extra time to research the many different products out there for your needs - and remember the only stupid question is the one never asked.
Good luck, and happy growing!! kush 17

by SCOTT LERNER And this industry, in addition to its remarkable growth and job creation, supplies local and state governments with revenues from taxes and fees in the millions of dollars, and exists and expands without the aid of federal funding. And, as if this industry weren’t already impressive enough, it is based purely on a completely natural form of medicine that provides relief for millions of patients. Sound too good to be true? In truth, it is the medical marijuana industry that possesses these idyllic attributes. This new and real industry has created a whole new class of medical employees, providing working experience for students and recent graduates as well as thousands of jobs for experienced workers and professionals. Monica, who is 25 and living in San Diego, began working at the San Diego Organic Collective (S.D.O.C.) after the current real estate market meltdown left her unemployed and collecting unemployment pay from the government. Although highly educated, possessing both a Bachelor’s degree and real estate license, Monica was laid-off and left without income or work. “I liked working in real estate and earning that amount of money, but working here [S.D.O.C.] pays the bills. I smoked before, but I never saw myself doing this or having this as a back-up plan. But it pays the bills,” Monica said. The medical marijuana field, however, helped her land on her feet and start a new and often rewarding career. With two kids 20 kush
to support, and an interest and advocacy for the use of medical marijuana, Monica has stayed afloat in a difficult economy, while also serving those in need of a little relief. The tourism industry has also been hit hard in this recent economic depression, especially in gulf coast cities such as Houston and New Orleans. Robin is a transplant from Houston who has found work in the booming California medical marijuana field. Working at the Therapeutic Healing Collective in La Jolla, and living nearby, Robin describes San Diego as “such a different place [that’s] so hard to describe. It’s just way different. There’s so much going on here, it has really inspired me.” From working at La Quinta hotels in Houston to a care-giving collective in San Diego, Robin has been afforded the opportunity to witness the growth of a new industry, and it has inspired her to attend college in pursuit of higher education. Both Robin and Monica have moved from struggling industries to the ever-developing medical marijuana field, being a part of the over 30,000 similar people who have found careers serving those in need as both stable economically and rewarding monetarily. The overwhelming focus here is that more than 30,000 jobs have been created in the medical marijuana field in the midst of the worst economic depression the country has seen since the 1920s. Thousands of people, including Monica and Robin, have found new careers serving the medical marijuana community.

Sunday, June 13th may have felt just like another day at the ballpark to most baseball buffs, but to fans congregating in Premier Suite 3 at Petco Park to watch the San Diego Padres play the Seattle Mariners in interleague play, it was exhilarating. When the scoreboard in the sixth (and again in the eighth) inning flashed Padres Welcome Kush San Diego Magazine, the world of medical marijuana was forever changed. For the first time at a major sporting event in the United States, a marijuana magazine, albeit medical marijuana, was recognized by a major sports franchise, on their scoreboard, in their amazing public stadium. With the hues of the city skyline of San Diego and the beautiful blue sky as a backdrop, Kush Magazine hosted a fun day at the stadium. Charlene Moran, the sales manager for Kush Magazine in San Diego was moved by the entire experience. “When I saw our name pop up on the scoreboard it was incredible, and the entire stadium reacted with a roar, said Moran. Although the game itself was anticlimactic for Padre fans ending in a 4 to 2 victory for the Mariners, every inning spelled party time in the Kush suite where MMJ enthusiasts were having the time of their lives. The catered event not only featured the regular baseball game fare of hotdogs, peanuts, Crackerjacks and beer, but also included a full bar and desert cart. We were extremely happy to host a ball game down here and we look forward to having more fun with our friends and associates in the near future.

You can tell a lot about a person based on their preferred weed-smoking technique and apparatus. With all the different ways to partake of your favorite combustible treats, it’s important to know exactly what your smoking method says about you: (continued on page 40) 38 kush
kush 39
Bong You’re a college student who’s renting your apartment with absolutely no intention of ever receiving your deposit back. Those bong water stains on the floor? Not your problem. Let your landlord take care of that when you move out in three years. Right now, you’ve got bigger problems to deal with, like the fact that your roommate’s girlfriend keeps humiliating you with lethal headshots in Call of Duty. You don’t have time to pass a joint or light a pipe every couple of minutes, because you’re too busy trying your hardest to avoid virtual assassination every thirty five seconds. Now get back to your game! You still have to pull an allnight study session for finals tomorrow, remember?
Pipe You’re a clean, efficient person who absolutely hates cleaning up bong water. A pipe offers all the convenience of stay-at-home smoking without all the impending danger of a big, clunky bong full of filthy, gooey liquid. As an added bonus, your pipe can easily be taken on the road if necessary. It’s not as covert as a joint, but it’s much better for you because you suck at rolling joints. A pipe is a versatile, all-purpose smoking apparatus that mirrors your personality perfectly. Pipes are like the Willem Dafoe of smoking devices: they make everything a little bit awkward, but they’re versatile enough to fit any role.
Joint You’re a social and adventurous person. If you’re smoking a joint, then you’re in one of three places: at Bob Marley’s grave, at a rock and/or rap concert, or ducking behind the auditorium with five other dads during the intermission of your kid’s poorlyexecuted, but surprisingly heartwarming third grade theater production of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” You don’t buy into the whole “smoke before you go” mentality. Instead, you prefer to smoke as you go and you welcome others to join in. This will pay off big time toward the end of your kid’s play, when you get to the Fizzy Lifting Drink scene and a third-grader dressed as an old man gets flown around the stage on cables while pretending he’s not completely terrified. 40 kush
Vaporizer You are a seasoned veteran of smoking. You’re pro-level. You’re a formidable powerhouse of smoking efficiency. You’re like the Kobe Bryant of weed. Vaporizers are by far the most efficient, effective means of smoking. They’re also the healthiest and cleanest smoking method, which demonstrates that you’re concerned with your general well-being. You also probably realized that, while a vaporizer may require a considerable upfront investment, you’re going to save a lot of money on the back end (thanks to the vaporizer’s incredible efficiency). As an added bonus, you get to use the word “vapors” a lot more than most people do in everyday conversation, which makes you much cooler than everyone else.
Edibles You’re a planner. You’re always one step ahead of the game. You’re also heading out to a place that’s sure to be a) incredibly interesting, and b) not even remotely smoke-friendly. Whether it’s a laser light show at the observatory, your cousin’s clown college graduation party, or an advanced screening of Toy Story 3 in 3D, you’re fully prepared to exponentially increase the awesomeness of your experience. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and reap the benefits of your tremendous foresight. Also, is there anything better than eating and getting high at the same time? That’s called “multitasking” and you’re great at it.

by JOSH KAPLAN Being raised in Los Angeles during the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, it was near impossible to turn on the radio and not hear a James Taylor or Carole King song. Their music spoke of the time, with Taylor’s East Coast memoirs, and travels South - while King’s music was the voice of the booming feminist movement, and inspiring activism everywhere. Although these songs weren’t written on the west coast, they always felt like California in a strange way. Coming to the Hollywood Bowl for three nights this past month as part of their Troubadour Reunion Tour (kicked off at the famous L.A. landmark in 2009) was validation of the California connection. Putting two amazing artists together on one bill can be challenging at times. Often songs need to be omitted due to set lists, and time constraints. Choosing wisely to have no opener allowed for the JT/CK duo to share the stage from the start, and besides a fifteen minute set break, allowed them to cover most of their individual and collaborative hits with well over thirty songs. Being more familiar with JT, and having seen him in recent years, I had an idea about his concerts. They are compelling, thought provoking, and are heartwarming glimpses into one man’s life. They are amazing and true. What was most shocking and fulfilling about this concert was the grab bag of hit songs that Carole King pulled from her repertoire. Not only did she play the songs I knew of, she busted out hits from the Motown era, standards from the ‘60‘s, and even a tune covered by the Beatles….. Wow, The Beatles!!! …..At one point when she told the story of the Fab Four covering the song “Chains” (my baby’s got me locked up in chains…), my jaw dropped in amazement when I realized she had actually written it. Who knew??? 42 kush
In 1960, King co-write her first hit “Will you Still Love Me Tomorrow?” for the Shirelles, with husband Gerry Goffin, starting a very famous string of hits written at the Brill Building in New York. Many other artists like Neil Diamond were creating simultaneously with King in this very noted period. Volleying hits back and forth, (shared or not) with JT was as comfortable as that old sweater on a rainy day. Carole at one point sidled up so close to James, lovingly putting her head on his shoulder as they sang her song, “You’ve Got A Friend”. It was almost as though they were cut from the same artistic cloth, specifically put here to create and collaborate with one another. Reuniting the same band from the 1970 Troubadour show, King continued with her barrage of hits, with favorites like “It’s too late”, “I Feel The Earth Move”, and “So Far Away”, but really brought down the house when she shocked me, and many people around me with her hit song “The Loco-Motion” (come on baby, do the loco-motion….). There were so many of these iconic songs, and it took me a few generations to realize that Carole King wrote lots of them, over 118 to be exact. This vast catalog rivaled and slightly over-shadowed that of the humble, almost demure Taylor. Although it may have been King’s stage presence and vibrance that stole the Bowl’s spotlight, the pairing of these two great singers was one to see - quite a treat. With far more credits for writing than singing, we debated over who‘s royalty check we‘d rather cash, Carole King’s or Madonna’s. Everyone agreed, they would take Carole King’s in a heartbeat. For those who want to relive this nostalgic duo, they will be performing at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA July 20th.
Strain review:
by DILLION ZACHARA
They say that diamonds are forever. They can cut through steel, and every girl wants one on her finger. These are all very glamorous reputations, but with this strain it’s not so straightforward. Taking a name like ‘Diamond Kush’, this strain of indica has a lot to live up to. But DK certainly didn’t last forever. With a strong buzz to start, it tapered off pretty fast, leaving us mentally and physically bored, wanting to smoke more to maintain the high. Don’t get us mixed up though, it’s a really nice high while it lasts... one of the better indicas around. It’s just really disappointing when it wears off. Something so good is hard to let slip away. The situation is sort of like when a bride thinks she’s going to get a 5 carat diamond on her wedding day and only gets a 4.5 carat rock. 4.5 is still pretty legit and hard to complain about, but the expectation was set and not met. ‘Diamond Kush’ sets a pretty high expectation, almost meets it or does for a short period, and then leaves all the magic at the alter. But Diamond Kush does have it’s place in your medicine cabinet. It’s always nice to have a variety available, and having a short term buzzer on hand can be a perfect fit for many situations. Say for example you only have a half hour before you need to drive somewhere, this strain will be mostly leveled off by then. And then when it does wear off, it’s actually a real nice state of equilibrium. DK should provide a nice balance to your creeper strains. 44 kush
This particular batch of Diamand Kush wielded an intoxicatingly sweet smell, with a matching sweet taste that seemed a nice fit to it’s name. With a shimmery white coating of crystals, it looked like it had been rolled in sugar and then glazed. Very light and fluffy buds that seemed to smoke much faster than we had anticipated. A nice amount of orange hairs were also sprinkled amongst the snowy landscape to offer some color diversity. Overall, Diamond Kush offers a pleasantly strong indica high that doesn’t take long to smoke and doesn’t take long to peak. The smell, taste, and other physical characteristics are all very enticing, but they don’t last for long. The price should average around $60/ eighth, which usually lands the on the higher end of the price scale. Is it worth it? We’ll probably go for a cheaper, longer lasting strain next time. DK is a very nice experience, but with so many great strains out there it’s good to keep shopping around.
By NICOLE SCOTT Craig, how did you get involved with norMlSC? I’ve been involved with NORML as far back as I can remember. I have always been a lifetime NORML supporter. I think one of the influential turning points of my life was when I went to the National Rainbow Gathering of the Tribes. This is where I met the legend Jack Herer for the first time. Jack’s work definitely influenced the work that I do. In San Diego there seemed to be a lot of misinformation, disorganization, and nothing seemed to get done. There was no communication within the marijuana community. There was a need for a NORML chapter in Southern California. So I volunteered to start one. On September 3, 2009 we became an official NORML chapter for Southern California. Nine days after that on September 9, 2009 the raids happened in San Diego. Our new NORML chapter shot into action. Our meetings were 100 to 200 people. We began writing an ordinance to present to the task force with the help of our legal team. Our legal team began to represent people a court. And now we are pushing the people’s initiative to rewrite the city charter to allow medical marijuana really in San Diego.
what do you do aS the exeC direCtor of the largeSt Chapter of norMl? As the executive director of NORML So Cal, I am responsible for the day-today operation, fundraising, meetings, training and a number of organizational responsibilities. There is always much to do. Fortunately we have other members of the board that share in this work as well.
how haS it Changed your life? thinking? Well, NORML has significantly changes both the lifestyle and day-to-day things I do. These days my life is about cannabis every waking moment. From the time I wake up till the time I go to bed there is always something to do. I think I work harder now than I ever have in my life. But you know what, this work is fun and enjoyable. I’m fortunate enough to meet so many beautiful people. Every day I learn something new. I’ve seen many people helped by cannabis. And I shed tears with people from the stories they told. How could this not change anyone’s thinking? If everyone just takes the time and look around and see what truly is happening with medical cannabis their thinking would be changed as well.
what iS the Current Situation with CannabiS in Southern California? Simply put: a war zone. Even though the voters have approved the use of medical marijuana it seems that a number of local communities want to resist
46 kush
or fight to stop our ability to have safe access. They’ve done things such as raiding places, destroying the shops in the process, attempting to zone us out or limit us very severely on the edge of society. Currently, they are sending cease and desist letters to the collectives citing that they must close for a number of small code violations as well as being in an area that they are not zone for. However, currently there are no areas zoned for medical marijuana collectives. The patients have a right to safe access and we the people need to stand up and be counted. We must continue to fight for our rights.
how Can the kuSh readerS beCoMe involved with Southern California norMl? We would love help from the KUSH Readers and everyone. We have many committees working on projects right now and need volunteers to help. We are looking for writers, researchers, and people with good organizational skills to hold it all together. We need people to speak to the news media. There is always something to do and we can always use your help. Just send an e-mail to Craig@ NORMLsc.org or feel free to call us 619-467-1235. Let us know what your interests are and what you can do to help. If we all work together we can make this happen.
what iS Southern California norMl working on? Currently Southern California NORML is working on the San Diego medical marijuana initiative. Our members have put together an initiative and are currently revising it. We are also encouraging voter registration of all cannabis users. We believe in order to get the initiative passed and to get legalization, it is important that we go out and get people to register to vote. We are also working on our educational program. We are currently setting up new programs for the community. We are involved in a number of conferences, marches and other activities to raise awareness and educate the public about marijuana.
what would you like people to know about CannabiS and Current eventS in hiStory? I think people should educate themselves. I think people should study and learn about the history of cannabis. Did you know that the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp? Did you know our presidents Lincoln smoked hemp? Cannabis has always been part of our history; it’s as American as apple pie. So let’s bring it back to the table.

As we enjoy the summer months, and prepare for another July 4th weekend, let’s take a minute to learn a few things about the Declaration of Independence that may not have stuck since the 3rd grade…… What’s known as the United States Declaration of Independence is a document declaring that the 13 colonies (then at war with Great Britain), were now independent states, thus no longer a part of the British Empire. Imagine the vision and courage to make such a move away from the largest Empire in history. It’s no wonder these iconic figures fill our history books, and grace our currency today. This Declaration, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4th, 1776, was widely published, and read to the public. It was such a different time, when the news of the day was read in public squares. A far cry from CNN and live streaming video, now 234 years later. Historians have figured out that the signing may have taken place close to a month later, on August 2, 1776, and not on the July 4th date as commonly believed. What if we celebrate with hot dogs and fireworks in August? It just doesn’t seem right, but it could have been. This most famous document, housed at the National Archives 52 kush
in Washington D.C. is printed on “hemp” paper. This shouldn’t be a big surprise, seeing as how both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp, and Ben Franklin owned a mill that made hemp paper. Is it possible that these guys were twisting up some doobies in between Congressional meetings? Meeting on the steps of the Courthouse, for a little inspiration? Well, it’s possible of course, but not proven. What is fact though, is that hemp and all its attributes have been around for well over 234 years, and it only makes sense that America’s most prized legal document was drawn up on the day’s most common and useful paper. As we find ourselves here in 2010, with more current issues on the table, let’s remember our forefathers and the painful, arduous task it must have been to write such a declaration. As our politicians and government officials draw up legislations regarding our future freedoms here in the U.S., we must appreciate the process, and the freedoms to continue doing so. It is such a vital, inherent thread in us, as Americans. We must never take these rights for granted. Happy Birthday America!

It’s 2 a.m. and you are leaving the bars with your buddies and your buzz on when you decide that you can either A: go back to someone’s house and pound the hangover nail in the coffin by having a few more or B. Go eat! Soak up those shots, beers and cocktails with some late night cuisine and give your morning a fighting chance. If you’re a night owl, you’re in luck because fortunately for us, there are a lot of really great late-night dining options in San Diego beyond Denny’s. (Don’t get me wrong. A grand slam at 4 a.m. has saved me on many occasions and often Denny’s is exactly what the drunken doctor demands.) The very best after-hours munchies may be the 24-hour taco stand, but since that it sort of a given, I am omitting them from this article because we all know that when it comes down to it, any place with “-ertos” on the end of its name is going to be super good. Never forget to thank our friends to the south for our amazing Mexican food. I was just on a trip to New York and while they have great food from every corner of the earth, there’s nothing that beat 5 rolled tacos or carne asada from Mr. ___berto.

Turf Supper Club Brian’s American Eatery
1451 Washington St (between Lark St & Lincoln Ave) San Diego, CA 92103 (619) 296-8268
Brian’s is only open 24-hours on the weekends, but every time I have eaten there it is open and after 2 a.m. so if you’re looking for a place to eat after partying in Hillcrest, Brian’s in certainly the place to go. If you get there between 15-30 minutes after the bars close, you will meet all kinds of new friends! I had the pleasure of meeting a 6’5” drag queen with immaculate make up and legs that put mine to shame, even after 6 months on the Stairmaster. Some things will never be fair. Brian’s is a classic diner without the kitsch of a place trying to be a classic diner. It’s straightforward American cuisine with humongous portions. It will definitely do the trick after hours or the next morning.

If you find yourself hungry in the Gaslamp after hours, this is the spot. Located a stumbles away from most of the bars, Brian’s 24 is a late-night diner’s dream. Breakfast is served 24 -hours a day and the late night menu has everything from stuffed quesadillas to a Midnight Brunch. Their hot sandwiches include a Monte Cristo that is to die for and on the cold side, try the PB&J and Cream Cheese Club. If that weren’t enough goodness, Brian’s 24 serves pizzas, burgers, sample platters of appetizers and wait for it….all you can eat fries! Try it anytime.

Every time I go to South Park or Golden Hill for a “quick drink”, I end up staying out until the wee hours. There’s just something about the neighborhood that is so fun and relaxed, that I am never eager to get home early. My South Park pals and I have started what is quickly becoming a tradition of hopping bars until about midnight and then going to the Turf Supper Club for late night steaks. It feels very Sinatra, very Swingers and is the perfect finale. A couple of notes: If you have had too much to drink, assign a designated griller, at this grill-your-your own spot. The Turf is only open until 2 a.m. so make sure you leave before last call!
Olde City Grill 967 Garnet Avenue San Diego, CA 92109 (858) 483-4624
Pacific Beach’s best late night option has a menu that might make you think twice at noon, but after midnight, Old City may very well appeal to your better senses. The introduction to the famous Dumpster Plates reads: The name says it all. We’ve mixed a bunch of stuff together that you love and then dumped them over crispy, golden fries. Go ahead…tell us how awesome we are. Choose from the Cheesesteak, Pizza, Nacho or Meaty plate. Most all come complete with a healthy helping of Cheese Wiz. When I mentioned these dishes to a friend of mine, she smartly noted, “The genius would have been to 86 the plate and just dump the concoction on the table. That would have shown commitment to the culinary achievement.” Sometimes though, the dumpster is your stomach and it needs to be fueled. Open until 3 a.m. Thurs-Sun.

Car: 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback Movie: Bullitt Driver: Frank Bullitt ‘Bullitt’ doesn’t have a reputation for being a movie with a great story, what it has though is what is widely considered to be one of the greatest car chases in movie history. Frank Bullitt is a police lieutenant who is ordered to protect an informant. The informant is set to testify against a well known mobster. Things go wrong and there is copious gunfire, as per the usual mobster/detective thriller, but the real fun comes as McQueen’s green Mustang fastback comes head to head with a pair of bad guys who are armed with a shotgun and a Dodge Charger R/T. The chase gets off to a semi-slow start but in an instant, two of the greatest examples of American muscle cars are flying through the hills and streets of San Francisco. 60 kush
In modern films, the sound of the engine and the speed of the car are masked by loud music, and quick cut editing. Bullitt lets the cars shine as the stars that they are. No music can be found after the action starts, and in it’s place is nothing but hypnotic engine noise; the deep, powerful rhythmic growl of the Charger contrasts the high revving wail of Bullitt’s Mustang. The two drivers battle it out like men who are fighting with everything they have. These are not flawless, pro racing drivers, they slam into guardrails, other cars and each other. You can feel the desperation of the drivers as they make their mistakes, and that is partly why we love it. Up until last year, Ford included a special Bullitt edition Mustang for those who are still effected by the scenes in this 1968 classic. Such is the effect of this movie. (continued on page 62)

Car: Aston Martin DB5 Movies: Goldfinger, Thunderball, GoldenEye, The World is Not Enough, Casino Royale Driver: James Bond The DB5’s svelte curves and flowing lines are enough to give this car legend status, but what sets the DB5 apart is it’s shared screen time with the world’s coolest spy; James Bond. In GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan’s 007 pilots the car around the European Alps, keeping pace with a beautiful woman in a more modern, and much faster Ferrari F355 GTS. In the reboot of the series, Casino Royale, Daniel Craig wins the DB5 off of a villain in a poker game, which he then, in traditional 007 fashion, immediately uses to seduce the villain’s girl. The DB5 will probably be best known for its role in the 1960’s classic, Goldfinger. In Q’s lair the audiences imagination is teased with wild technology like in-dash maps and tracking devices, machine guns behind the headlights, smoke screens and the infinitely cool passenger ejector seat. Sean Connery puts the car through it’s paces battling Goldfinger’s henchmen later in the film. The pretty blonde gets killed and the car ends up trashed, but the scene cemented the Aston as one of the world’s coolest cars.
Car: Lamborghini Miura Movie: The Italian Job (Original) Driver: Roger Beckermann Those of you who have seen this film may be a bit confused at this choice. The stars of the film, from an automotive standpoint, are undeniably the Minis that blast through Turin at the movie’s climax. The orange car at the beginning was only featured for a few minutes. But oh, what a fantastic few minutes. As the opening credits roll, the audience is treated to what amounts to many a car enthusiast’s wet dream. The Lamborghini is driven hard through the beautiful Italian Alps to the tune of Matt Monro’s ‘On Days Like These’. The Lamborghini Miura is legend on it’s own. Many car nuts regard the Miura as the world’s first road going super car, and even more give it credit for Lamborghini’s success as a company. The scene is a glimpse at the super car experience in the 60’s; A wealthy gentleman cooly tearing up asphalt in the Italian Alps. This scene exudes cool on the Miles Davis level. Right up until the Lamborghini slams into a tractor and is rolled off of a cliff by mobsters. These scenes may have been filmed for the big screen, but you can relive them on your small one today. At the time of writing all of the scenes mentioned in this article are available online on YouTube. Check them out, or for the full experience, watch the full films themselves.

Sir Elton Hercules John. The name alone is impressive, the man and the myth are beyond impressive. Still relevant and continuing to perform around the world, Sharon comes to us on July 24th for what will surely be a moving performance on many levels. You don’t want to miss it, and we don’t want you to miss it.
The Silversun Pickups are simply delightful. Between lead singer Brian Aubert’s enchanting vocals and hints of the early 90’s indiegrunge-rock heyday, it’s pretty hard to listen to the entire Swoon or Carnavas albums without liking this band. The Los Angeles natives, who are part of Dangerbird Records and the Silver Lake community, have been touring extensively since Swoon and come back home to please fellow Californians to the south on this lovely night at Soma.

When planning one’s summer in San Diego, it’s pretty safe to say that attending outdoor concerts will be on the list at some point or another….. Whether it’s the mega-shows booked at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheater, or the more quaint vibe of Humphrey’s By The Bay - Between the two, KUSH believes that by the time this article hits the floor of the bathroom, you’ll be calling your buds to plan a great night out. Formerly known as Coors Amphitheater in Chula Vista, this outdoor venue holds 19,492 people. With over half of the tickets being general admission lawns, this allows for concert-goers to sprawl out, put a blanket down, and enjoy the San Diego sun. An occasional bonfire has been known to ignite at the more amped up rock shows. There is something tribal about getting energetic music fans together in an open air venue. People tend to let loose a bit, and Cricket Wireless Amphitheater is the place to do it. With top acts rolling through all season long, there’s no shortage of killer live music to go see. Here is a list of some of the bands scheduled this summer... 7/7 - Lilith 7/9 - Kings of Leon 7/16 - Vicente Fernandez 7/17 - Slightly Stoopid 7/24 - Elton John
7/25 - 91X Fest w/ 311 and The Offspring 8/7 - Toby Keith 8/10 - Vans Warped Tour 8/15 - Christina Aguilera 8/20 - Dave Matthews Band
If large crowds aren’t your thing, scale it down at the 1,400 seat Humphrey’s By The Bay. This venue offers dinner seating in the first 7 rows, and hosts a variety of acts, including major rock, jazz, blues, comedy, folk, and International music. Ideally situated on the San Diego Bay, this venue is adjacent to the Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn, (just in case you’ve had a few too many). Check out this list of summer laughs and jams… 7/6 - Colbie Caillat 7/9 - Chris Botti 7/14 - Gipsy Kings feat. Fools are sure to be pitied in the remake of the popular 80s TV show ‘The A Team’. The new film is slated to be a much grittier version of the original show, in order to be more in tune with today’s audience. That said people looking for a stroll down memory lane with their favorite characters are sure to get the occasional nod as well. Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson and Sharlto Copley are playing Face, Hannibal and Howling Mad respectively, with former UFC fighter Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson taking on the role of B.A. Baracus.
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up for the first time since ‘Vanilla Sky’ for this action/comedy flick. Diaz plays a normal woman who gets caught up with a dangerous, if not lighthearted spy played by Cruise. The two are thrown into wild and dangerous situations where they must work together despite Diaz’s complete lack of knowledge in the field. If you are a fan of movies like ‘True Lies’ or ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ this might be worth checking out. Released on June 25.
The film opened on June 11.
Five massive comedy names make up the cast in this summer comedy. As kids, the five main characters were good friends and basketball team mates. When their former coach dies, the friends decide to get together with their families for a Fourth of July weekend.
Despicable Me is an animated family picture about Gru (played by Steve Carrell) a villain who plans to steal the moon. Gru leads an army of cutesy little minions, and hopes to surpass his villain rival, Vector. One day Gru meets three orphan girls who want him to become their father and he must adjust to a new life.
Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider all star in the film alongside some other equally large names.
This is sure to be a solid picture that you can take the whole family to enjoy; with morals and lessons wrapped in a slick 3D package.
One thing is for sure, if the movie turns out half as good as it’s cast’s credentials it’s sure to be a winner. Released on June 25.
The movie is set to come out on July 9.
The newest film vampire romance Twilight series is almost upon us. Edward, Bella and Jacob are back in this third installment of the wildly popular Twilight series. In Eclipse, Bella the leading lady, finds herself in trouble. As it turns out, when you are in a tight spot, being pretty close with a vampire and a werewolf can be pretty handy.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this cerebral science fiction thriller from Christopher Nolan the director of Dark Knight, Insomnia and Momento. DiCaprio plays a man who works for a company that infiltrates the human conscious as a person sleeps, while the mind is vulnerable. While there, he either retrieves secrets from that person’s mind or in the case of an inception, plants a new idea in the victim’s thoughts. This movie hits theaters on July 16.
If you’re a fan, you already know this probably, but the film debuts on June 30.

Henry David Thoreau once famously wrote, “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” And although Thoreau’s name in and of itself might conjure up images of rural self-induced solitude and a verbose book to accompany it, a few days spent in the valley basin of Yosemite National Park only seems to solidify the remarkable preservation of the natural world and its immediate intimate effect upon our everyday being. Yosemite has boundless nature to offer: hikes, views, animals, whitewater rafting, all as scenic and limitless to the eye as the next. Rivers like the Merced and Tuolumne flow with crystalline radiance during early spring, plowing through the finest ravines, gorges, and forests California has to offer. The rivers themselves, while picturesque, are best experienced 80 kush

while floating atop an inflatable raft, whitewater caps misting the air, beautiful scenery framing every view. Bob Ferguson and Zephyr Whitewater Expeditions have been providing rafting trips along the Merced and Tuolumne rivers in the Yosemite basin since 1973. Due to an above average rainfall, both the Merced and Tuolumne are high water rivers this season, with the Merced being anticipated to run into late August.
Information before you go: There are many trip options to choose from, form half-day excursions to two to three day overnight trips which include camping along the riverbed. As for the difficulty of whitewater rafting, owner and founder Bob Ferguson says reassuringly, “The Merced and Tuolumne are around Class III or IV, which is beginner to intermediate, with no training required. Anyone can come on these rivers, kids or adults.” Zephyr also provides a basic safety training course before every trip departs. Departing from the Indian Flat Campgrounds near the hamlet El Portal, trips down the Merced River range between 11 and 26 miles are provide some of the best whitewater rafting experiences in California. The company’s website says, “Offering abundant whitewater confined by a narrow corridor, this river is a must for the whitewater enthusiast.” While the Merced River trips provide some of the best whitewater experiences possible, the Tuolumne River combines both excellent whitewater rafting with the insurmountable beauty of the California wilderness. This 18-mile-long trip offers excellent Class III-IV rapids, along with ample riverside sandy areas for camping and plenty of scenic views of the surrounding wildlife. Long trips along the Tuolumne River also allow rafters to spend a night under the stars, raft along two adjoining side creeks, and enjoy natural “swimming holes [that] are interconnected with natural granite jacuzzi pools.” Zephyr Whitewater Expeditions is the largest operator of trips along these two rivers, in large part due to their 27-year history in the region. With modern permit requirements stunting the amount of expeditions and companies along the rivers, Zephyr provides a unique and time-proven experience. And Whitewater rafting the Yosemite Valley basin is truly an exciting and beautiful way to witness some of California’s and

America’s finest preserved wilderness. The combination of actively participating in nature while witnessing it grandeur is something truly powerful, something that lends its true expression only to experience. As Ansel Adams once said, “Yosemite Valley, to me, is always a sunrise, a glitter of green and golden wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space.” Be sure to check out www.zrafting.com for all of their whitewater rafting expeditions.

It’s July and the MLB All Star Game at Anaheim stadium on the 13th is just around the corner. There are already some surprises and talks of trades are starting to swarm around the water cooler. Baseball season is in full swing and fans are ready for their teams to get hot. For the avid fan, and I definitely include myself in that group, every game is important and we rarely if ever miss a broadcast. Unfortunately, teams get days off and on those dark
84 kush
days, what is a baseball fan to do to satisfy the need for shut-outs and deep flies? I wouldn’t dream of watching another team’s game, so I go to the DVD player and pop in a baseball flick. On my teams last off day, I made a mental compilation of my favorite movies about America’s pastime. My top 10 are here for you to argue. No matter what you decide about my choices, each one of these films is worth seeing and even owning.
do uts chVD ms of me. ter one ng.
Someday people will walk down the street and say, “I saw The Natural. It is the best there ever was.” Roy Hobbs may be the best fictional baseball player there ever was and Robert Redford’s portrayal of the slugger is legendary. The drama overshadows the baseball but with the Randy Newman soundtrack and the blood soaked shirt, it’s homerun every time.
This is my sentimental favorite because of the real life story of Jim Morris, the high school science teacher who saw his major league dream realized on a dare and an alignment of stars. Dennis Quaid plays Morris and does so with such believability as a pitcher that you wonder what his radar gun would register. With the plot of the laboring Owls ( high school team Morris coached) making it to district and the aging teacher tossing 97MPH fastballs with no good explanation, the Rookie is walk off.
Tatum O’ Neil and Robert Matthau won my heart as a small child and never lost it. These Bears are the quintessential misfits that all misfits aspire to. Beer drinking manager, foul mouthed kids and the savior Kelly smoking on his motorcycle makes the Bad News Bears a 3-2 come from behind win in the bottom of the 9th.
This was Geena Davis’s finest hour for sure. The best baseball movies are the true stories and the All American Girls Baseball League that inspired Penny Marshall’s tale of the women who got the chance to pay pro ball during wartime is a gem. With the exception of the stupid song and singing in the clubhouse, this movie is near perfect and it’s my favorite Tom Hanks performance of all time. Penny Marshall’s no hitter.
I saw this movie for the first time about 2 years ago and it quickly made my list of favorites. This is Billy Crystal’s labor of love and his admiration for the game translates well to the script and the screen. The story is of the 1961 Yankees and Roger Maris and Mickey Mantel’s race to beat Babe Ruth’s single season home run record. The film digs into the off the field lives of both Mantel and Maris and shows the human side of two of baseball’s best all-time players. A home stand sweep. *Mark McGuire should be forced to watch this movie daily.
instability and starts seeing a shrink named Dr. H. Aaron (Dianne Weist). A laugher from moment one.
“If you build it, they will come” has become a national motto. The fantasy story of the Iowa farmer’s journey to uncover secret messages that lead to the return of Shoeless Joe Jackson and other players including Ray Kinsella’s father is inspiring and totally masterful fantasy. The best farm team in the league.
Kevin Costner is Mr. Baseball Movie and this may be the most authentic baseball movie on the list. The minor leagues are a strange and wonderful place that is portrayed in its real and brutal light. The romance between Costner and Sarandon is touching and not overstated. Tim Robbins is the perfect Rook and Costner plays the part with true heart and believability. A triple play.
You’re killing me, Smalls! These neighborhood kids may be in second place behind the Bad News Bears, but the charm of this movie is the group of friends who spend a summer playing ball and creating adventure after adventure. Be a kid for a couple of hours and realize how many great lines come from this movie. Rookie of the Year every year.
Kevin Costner plays a washed up, over the hill fictional pitcher, Billy Chapel, for the Detroit Tigers, about to pitch the last game of his career. As he embarks on the journey of his last game, which is apparently going to be a “Perfect Game,” he flashes back on his illustrious career and his personal love battle with his on again off again girlfriend, Jane Aubrey, played by Kelly Preston. John C. Reilly, the catcher and his best friend and team mate, craft the perfect game to create a perfect baseball movie.
I laughed, laughed and then laughed some more at Albert Brook’s portrayal of a Yankee’s scout who is banished to Mexico as punishment for a bad signing. He discovers Steve Nebraska, a pitcher who blows away hitters with a 100MPH fastball and hits like Ty Cobb. Once a Yankee, Nebraska shows signs of emotional kush 85

KUSH: How would you describe your music? LM: Our music has been defined as “good get-high music” by legions of fans worldwide. Our music is for the people, the patients, the growers, the care-givers, the hemp believers, as well as the smokers and the tokers around the globe. Our ideology toward the plant has come a long way from our earlier music. The change was inspired by Eddy Lepp and Jack Herer the first time we went to Amsterdam for the Cannabis Cup. KUSH: What’s been the most challenging part in keeping your band alive? LM: The name “Los Marijuanos” has been the greatest challenge for the band. A lot of respectable venues wouldn’t book us, radio stations wouldn’t play us, magazines wouldn’t cover us just because the name was so similar to the word marijuana. The name and the logo with the leaf is just too inyour-face for a lot of people; especially when we were starting out. Even my own family was worried about the name. But, I never thought of changing it; it is who we are and what we represent.
KUSH: How do you feel about the regulation of medical marijuana? LM: I am in full support of medical marijuana in all states. Any measure that helps free the weed and legitimizes it for medical use is good to me. I think it’s a good place to start, but I am also in support of full legalization for everyone. As it states in the Bible, “god put every plant on this planet for us to use,” and if you look at the history of the plant, it has been a sacrament of religion and people for ages. Only recently has it been outlawed.
KUSH: What band has had the most influence on you and your bandmates?
KUSH: How many albums does Los Marijuanos have? LM: Puro Plieto (1999), The Smoke Out (2001), Marijuanos 4 Life (2004), 23 Biggest tokes greatest Hits Album (2005), Donde Esta’ mi Feria? (2007), trippin on tricombs (2010).
KUSH: What’s next for your band? LM: Putting in mad work, my nugget. I just put the final touches on the new “trippin’ on tricombs” CD, set to drop in fall of 2010. Then we are playing shows in support of the new release. I got something really cool lined up with Apothecary travel and green House: We are hiding a “gREEN tICKEt” in the new album. One lucky fan who finds the “gREEN tICKEt” will win a trip to smoke and party with Los Marijuanos at the Cannabis Cup 2010 in Amsterdam, a free Zephyr Ion Vaporizer, 300 euros spending money and more! We will be performing at tacoma Hempfest, the first treating Yourself Expo in toronto with the World’s Largest Vapor Dome, Seattle Hempfest, Portland Hempstalk, Detroit Hemp and Cannabis Expo on Halloween, and then back to Amsterdam for the 23rd annual Cannabis Cup! For current tour schedule, you can check us out on Myspace, Facebook or our websites: losmarijuanos4life.com or losmarijuanosmusic.com.
KUSH: What else would you like our readers to know? LM: Please take the time to do your research on the marijuana movement. We need supporters to step out of the closet, register to vote, write your government officials, and make your voice known and where you stand on this movement. Innocent people are being imprisoned, families are being destroyed all for the use of a plant. We need to stop this madness and not stand for them to herd us in prison like cattle. Stand up. Free Eddy Lepp, free Marc Emery, help Rick Simpson. The time for change is now. Support the movement today.
LM: Queen -- Freddy Mercury is one of my favorite vocalists ever. Bands like the Rolling Stones, The Eagles, all the classic rock and R&B artists (too many to name). Old-school hip-hop artists, like Public Enemy, RUN DMC, total Devastation. As far as in the Marijuana Freedom Fighters, Eddy Lepp, Jack Herer, Brett Bogue, Marc Emery, Rick Simpson, Steve Hager, tommy Chong and last, but not least, my boys from Cypress Hill. If it wasn’t for them opening the door, Los Marijuanos would have never been. Much love to B-Real and the homies, and everyone who fights to free the plant. kush 89

Since 2004, Petco Park has been a shining example of the modern ballpark, yet it already has a classic ballpark feel. With all the amenities of today, combined with nostalgia from the past - it all comes together at Petco Park. Perfectly located on Harbor Drive, across from the San Diego Convention Center, and just two blocks from the San Diego trolley light rail, Petco Park was designed to revitalize the aging downtown area, especially the East Village. With the historic Western Metal Supply building façade being saved from the wrecking ball, and incorporated into the left field corner, “adaptive reuse” has brought a real old-time vibe to the new stadium. Recently, KUSH Magazine hosted a great day at the park with many of the local KUSH advertisers. The Mariners were in town, and this was a chance to enjoy one of the luxury suites. With the amazing sight lines, food, drinks, and overall atmosphere, Petco Park was a great place to spend the day. With ocean breezes, hot dogs, beer, and baseball, all there to be enjoyed, what better place to go this summer? It’s that time of 92 kush
the year, and with the Padres at the top of the National League West, (or at least tied for first, when this was written), there is hope as we turn towards the All-Star game. Here’s a list of home games coming up: 7/1 - 7/4 - vs. Houston Astros 7/16 - 7/18 vs. Arizona Diamondbacks 7/27 - 7/29 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers 7/30 - 8/1 vs. Florida Marlins 8/10 - 8/12 vs. Pittsburgh Pirates 8/24 - 8/26 vs. Arizona Diamondbacks 8/27 - 8/29 vs. Philadelphia Phillies For further info on the Padres, or Petco Park, go to www.Padres.com, and get yourself out to 19 tony gwynn Way, and enjoy this magnificent ballpark.
