Swimming is one of the best natural forms of exercise that

we can get. If you’re like most kids, you could stay in the pool for hours on a summer afternoon. If you’re an adult who doesn’t find yourself splashing around, diving for rings or challenging your buddies to a cannonball contest, just getting in the pool again is a great start to a complete physical wellness routine. Swimmers come in all shapes and sizes, and like just a few other sports, you can do it from a very young age well into your senior years. Lap swimming is a great way to get an aerobic workout in without putting any pressure on your bones and joints. Not only do you get your heart rate going, but the stretching and fluid motion of a swim stroke is essentially underwater yoga. Your joints, muscles and tendons get the opportunity to extend and stretch, giving you improved flexibility and better posture. An Olympic-sized pool runs 25 or 50 meters in length. If your neighborhood pool’s lap lanes are 25 meters (most are), 33 laps or 66 lengths equals a mile. Here are a few comparisons of calories burned doing different exercises. In this sample, our athlete weighs 150 lbs. A mile of moderate swimming burn 310 calories while increasing heart rate, improving lung health as well as strength and flexibility. 45 minutes of jogging burns 358 calories, improves cardiovascular health, muscle tone and endurance. Pounding the pavement can put pressure on joints, which can become painful. 45 minutes of low- impact aerobics burns 310 calories and 45 minutes of housework burns about 150. Along with creating strength and cardiovascular wellness, there are also psychological benefits to swimming, if you allow them to occur. Relaxing and swimming with very low effort can become meditative. By letting your mind focus on the rhythm of the stroke, your breathing becomes regular and general ease of motion translates into the rest of your day. Unless you’re a non-swimmer, swimming is something most of us know how to do. It is worth it to learn proper form because not only will you enjoy learning proper technique, it will improve your fitness and reduce risk for injury. Proper technique can be 10

learned by any swimming video, website or lifeguard who is willing to chat. Every neighborhood it seems has a community pool or swim center, as do many fitness centers and health clubs. And if you’re lucky enough to have an ocean or lake nearby, even better. Studies have shown that people who swim regularly have better attitudes and a more positive outlook because it is more of a mind-body experience than a “noisier” sport like aerobics or biking. When asked what swimming does for her, a 40-yearold woman who swims 3- times a week responded in such a way that it epitomizes the benefits of this sport: “Swimming for me is more like an over all mind, heart, body and soul exercise. Granted, it is still exercise and you have to make yourself get into the groove; once you are in, there is no looking back. Swimming strengthens your heart, relaxes, puts your mind at ease, and increases your endurance and strength. For me it is a choice to go and exercise, but what motivates me to push through the tough first laps is that it eventually becomes my personal time to reflect or meditate on what is bothering me. It gives me the time to properly organize my thoughts and then after all that, you’ve suddenly hit “the zone” and it becomes so peaceful that you can actually get away with thinking of nothing other than how blessed you feel just to have the ability to be there. All of that while losing inches and fat? Why wouldn’t you?” One last thing to mention is that swimming is not necessarily a great way to lose a lot of weight. Because the water keeps your body cool, aerobic activity slows once you’re on land as opposed to a land exercise where aerobic activity often lasts as long as 18 hours after completing the workout. Swimming is great for weight loss and even better if supplemented with other aerobic activity. A great way to get or stay fit is to swim 2 days and jog or bike 2 days. All are cheap or free and will keep the machine running smoothly.

Stay Healthy!

A high from the Blue Dream strain makes you feel like you’re up in the clouds. Above all the BS in life. You’re getting work done and making stuff happen. Putting life in motion. Living the dream, with nothing but clear blue skies ahead. Blue Dream is a member of the sativa species of Cannabis. A sativa high tends to involve more thinking, productivity, and increased energy in general. Significant levels of pain and nausea are usually also curbed. And while an indica strain will help you to relax, de-stress, chill out, and/or overcome insomnia, a pure sativa like this should inspire exercise, a deep conversation, or an ambitious to-do list. Fits of laughter and an overwhelming sense of well being are some other nice side effects. (Why is this stuff illegal again?) The physical characteristics of this strain consist of copious red hairs and crystals with a moderately sticky and dense feel. The smell is pungent and dank, a smell that almost gives you a high on its own. Blue Dream is very sweet, both before and after ingestion. It has an undeniable fruitiness. The blue part of its name likely comes from its partial roots in the blueberry strain. Dream is a somewhat odd choice of words, considering sleep is not often a part of the package. Day dreaming was probably the inspiration. Alternatively, with an indica you’re likely to dream while sleeping, although you probably won’t remember those dreams upon awakening.

m On the darker side of the Blue Dream, and sativa for that matter, many people become overwhelmed with paranoia, anxiety, and an increased heart rate. This can be a bit frightening, but shouldn’t last more than 10-15 minutes. An indica’s negatives would likely point towards laziness, forgetfulness, and a lack of motivation. Depending on what you’re needing, these negatives can quickly become refreshing positives. Marijuana is a person-to-person, situation-to-situation, strainto-strain experience. Your high will often depend on the mental state, physical condition, and environment you bring to the table. And of course, one’s genetic makeup and health are undeniable factors. But when everything is right and you know it, it’s alllll good... and you know it. Overall a very pleasant experience is in store for the Blue Dream toker. It is a fairly cheap sativa, averaging around $45 for an eighth at most established dispensaries.

Go RiDe the Blue DReam wave!

THE

IMPOSSIBLE DREAM

Finding Rental Property in Los Angeles Under the New Dispensary Ordinance

by SCOTT LERNER

The recent ordinance passed by the City of Los Angeles concerning the legal distribution of marijuana within city limits has provided a number of roadblocks for those seeking to legally operate marijuana cooperatives. The ordinance, which was passed on January 26, provides a number of criteria regarding the opening and operation of a licensed medical marijuana dispensary. According to the 18-page document, amongst a number of limiting requirements, “no collective shall be located within a 1,000-foot radius of a school, public park, public library, religious institution, licensed child care facility, youth center, substance abuse rehabilitation center, or any other medical marijuana collective(s).” Additionally, collectives cannot be located

on any property that borders, is on an abutting lot, or is across the street or alley from any property that is zoned for residential use. This restriction includes mixed-use residential buildings, such as larger buildings that have shops or restaurants on lower levels and apartments or condominiums above. What does this all mean? Barry Schoenbrun, a senior partner at Told partners, an industrial and commercial real estate firm and a native of Los Angeles, describes the situation as “extremely difficult if not impossible for legitimate, licensed businesses to find a suitable location.” Schoenbrun, a veteran of 25 years, says the situation today is “not unlike prohibition.” Because of the large amount of location requirements for these businesses and owners, the amount of usable properties is extremely low. After scouring the city for acceptable properties, Schoenbrun has found few that perfectly match the criteria. “But finding the property is really only half the battle,” he explains. “Owners of these buildings are saying no to these businesses even though they are legitimate. Many owners are afraid of neighboring issues, especially if

20

the building is multi-tenant. Or they are afraid people associated with the marijuana industry will ruin their property.” The problem Schoenbrun and others like him are facing is that the amount of suitable properties is extremely low, and the amount of willing owners is even lower. Schoenbrun, 58, believes that many of the owners he has dealt with are making their decisions based on negative stereotypes associated with marijuana as well as the culture they believe that surrounds the drug as well as other drugs. Simply: they are afraid of the implications of being involved with marijuana, believing that the dispensaries and the people running and patronizing them are somehow linked to illegal activities which could in turn implicate them in said activities. “It’s not unlike prohibition,” Schoenbrun explains. Indeed, it isn’t. The tarnished image of marijuana and its users is simply overshadowing the business and medical legitimacy of these dispensaries. It is this image that is making the opening of the collectives even more difficult than the ordinance has already made it, and making it near-impossible for realtors such as Barry Schoenbrun to locate properties for many of his clients. Due to the nature of the difficulty of finding an acceptable place of business, many owners are even offering amounts in excess of the asking price of buildings in order to ensure that they obtain the rights to the property. In any shape or form, this is in serious contrast to the crumbling real estate market in Southern California.

by JOSH KAPLAN THE SUMMER OF 1969 WAS A PIVOTAL PERIOD IN OUR existence. There were history altering events taking place at every turn, really too many to list. It was the end of a decade, and the height of the flower-power “hippie movement”. From the West coast in San Francisco, all the way across our country to a 600 acre farm in upstate New York, there was a movement taking place - it was real, and it had a name, face, and sound. This period, (that in hindsight was just a fleeting moment) culminated at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, August 15th-18th, 1969. Being just a two week old baby, I regretfully had no way to get to this show, and of course had no ticket, but that wouldn’t have stopped me today. The modern day festivals are still living in the shadow of this momentous event. Everything from the amount of people (half a million) and the number of arrests (that being zero), to the unbelievable line-up - all of which are still talked about today, and still yet to be matched. Even though the weekend was spattered with rain showers, (which turned the venue into a huge mud pit), combined with a notorious string of bad “brown acid”, these promoters did something far beyond their wildest dreams. They brought this “Peace” movement to the forefront of our society, and in one weekend, proved that this scene, and the people in it weren’t just 24

drug-addled waste-cases. They were able to show that “Peace” and “Love” weren’t just hippie slogans to be worn on buttons. They were actual notions of a period sometimes lost in the distractions of war, moon landings, and political assassinations. With notable musical acts like Richie Havens, Ravi Shankar, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, The Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, The Who, The Band, CSN&Y, and Jimi Hendrix as a closer, this was a veritable who’s who of the time. Those bands who declined to play (some who deeply regretted it later) were, The Beatles, The Doors, The Byrds, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Dylan. Just imagine if those acts were included on this mega-roster? It’s too much to even fathom. So the next time you’re at Coachella, or venture off to Bonnaroo, or even just go to a local show, try to appreciate your surrounding environment. Those that are there to share the space, and the experience. Take a moment to soak in what’s happening, and reflect on all the ideas, music, and art going on all around you. Maybe, just maybe, we can get this whole “Peace” and “Love” thing back in order. If we can just make enough buttons to make us forget about today’s war, and a catastrophic oil leak, than just maybe we can revitalize a very overdue movement. (continued on page 26)

The Hold Steady 8.25.10 @ Detroit Bar (Costa Mesa) The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn based alt rock group that formed in 2004 and really bring a raucous live set to the stage for their fans. Their latest album Heaven Is Whenever was released earlier this year and builds on the success of their four previous albums. Touring in support of the album, they come to the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa for what will surely be a packed house. Lead singer and band leader Craig Finn’s voice sounds eerily similar to vintage Bruce Springsteen (Finn is also a big for of Bruce, and they’ve performed together in the past). So if you love The Boss, you’ll probably find something in The Hold Steady to love. And if you don’t even like Springsteen, these guys are still really really good! www.theholdsteady.net

Chemical Brothers, Chromeo, Yacht 8.29.10 @ Hollywood Bowl The Hollywood Bowl in the late summer... is there anywhere that a true fan of live music would rather be?!? This lineup is certainly an interesting one, pairing up the Chemical Brothers’ famous live electronic dance set with Chromeo’s two-steppin’ powerhouse, and finally the more chilled out Yacht to open the night. Not your typical night at the Bowl, but it will not disappoint... we promise. A quick side note, Jay-Z and Beyonce were so intrigued by Yacht that they stood out in the crowd at Coachella with security guards surrounding them just to catch them live. So get to this show early and make sure you see the wonderful openers in action. www.thechemicalbrothers.com, www.chromeo.net, www.teamyacht.com

Ray Lamontagne, David Gray 9.7.10, 9.8.10 @ Greek Theatre Prepare to be swooned. Seriously. Between these two mens’ wonderful voices and the atmosphere that gets dropped on the Greek in late summer, even straight men will have a hard time resisting the appeal of these dudes. For all of you guys with or

without a girlfriend out there: this is a great place to take a girl on a date! Cell phone reception is virtually impossible to get at the Greek, so you don’t have to worry about her being disinterested and texting or BBMing all night! They are playing two nights in a row, so no pressure to make it on the 7th. If you like good music and good feelings, get to the Greek one of these evenings. www.raylamontagne.com, www.davidgray.com

Menomena 9.16.10 @ El Rey Theatre Menomema is radical. Hard to think of a better word to describe this funky psychedelic band out of Portland. I actually came across them while randomly wandering the record store in Seattle years ago. I read their name, loved the album cover, took one listen, and fell in love. They released their third LP, Mines, on July 27th and are touring all over the US in support of that album. This is a show that we’re really excited about and can’t stress how much you should go check them out with stellar sound system at the El Rey. Their live set can become a circus of sorts, with the three band members swapping instruments like mad... and it totally works towards their advantage and the crowd’s enjoyment. Go! www.menomena.com

Local Natives 9.17.10, 9.18.10 @ The Music Box Los Angles locals (and Orange County natives), Local Natives, have come a long way in the last year. Recently playing shows at smaller venues like the Silver Lake Lounge, this time they make the leap to the big stage of The Music Box @ the Henry Fonda for a pair of weekend shows. They released their debut album Gorilla Manor in the US back in February and have been bursting onto the indie rock scene ever since. With a sound described anywhere

Above: Local Natives Right from Top: Ray LaMontagne, Menomena, Phoenix, Tegan & Sara, David Gray, Japandroids, The Hold Steady

from psych-folk to ‘clash music’, they have a very well put together live set that is worth every penny spent on it. Highly recommend making it out so, if not for a better reason, you can say “Oh yeah, I knew about and saw them live back in 2010.” www.thelocalnatives.com

Phoenix, Grizzly Bear, Girls 9.18.10 @ Hollywood Bowl Phoenix is anything but new, forming over ten years ago back in 1999. But only recently have the Frenchmen really stepped up as a household name around the world with their album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (which they won a Grammy for in the Best Alternative Music Album category). They are really a great band that are joined by Grizzly Bear and Girls on another beautiful night at the Hollywood Bowl. Tickets aren’t going to be easy to come by for this show, so call in every favor you can! It will totally be worth it. www.wearephoenix.com, www.grizzly-bear.net, www.myspace.com/girls

Tegan and Sara, Paramore 9.19.10 @ Honda Center (Anaheim) Identical twins Tegan and Sara have to be two of the cutest rocker chicks around. Add Paramore’s Hayley Williams to the mix and the Honda Center will just be a regular doll-fest on September 19th. All kidding aside, these two bands have punk rock written all over them and the girls can flat out wail when it comes to singing. Both bands released an album in late 2009 and will surely play a healthy mix of their hits with their newer, lesser known material. This will be a fun show and besides, what better is there to do on a Sunday night in Anaheim? www.teganandsara.com, www.paramore.net

Japandroids 9.19.10 @ Detroit Bar (Costa Mesa) Well if your wondering if there’s an answer to the previous question, this may be it for you! Also on Sunday the 19th, Detroit Bar gets another stellar show in the OC. Less cute, more greasy garage rock, these rockers from Vancouver, BC are a really legit live show. Japandroids avoid the cheesy stereotypes that often come with bands of their breed, and bring fans an authentic rock ‘n’ roll experience. Don’t get us confused, we love what’s happening over at the Honda Center this night, but Detroit Bar brings a little different flavor to the mix. Dig it. www.japandroids.com

by Jay Evans Ok, so your Chia Pet died in 3rd grade, and your green thumb has been black ever since….KUSH understands. Not everyone has the knack to bring life to a shelf bought, terra cotta sheep. But as recent marijuana laws have allowed for personal growths within reason, it may be time to look into a start-up hydroponics system for your medicinal needs. Although a massive grow room may not be in your future, (not at first anyway) we think that with the abundance of hydro shops popping up everywhere, you should be able to determine a reasonable sized project, and take a fresh approach to turn things green again. For less than the cost of an ounce of your favorite weed from your local dispensary, you can buy a complete hydroponics growing system, that is low maintenance, and will harvest about four ounces of your favorite strain, every four months. This type of savings will add up very quickly, and pay for itself almost overnight. KUSH did a little research and found some great websites to get you started. For the best prices and expertise in the field, check out Hollywood Hydroponics’ website at www.SowCalHydro.com. With three stores now to serve you, these “Hydro Gurus” know how to get you started. The Bubbleponics kit from Stealth Hydroponics seems to be the most concise and complete starter kit. Priced quite reasonably at around $200-229. This kit is so complete, all one needs to do is add water. If you go to www.HydropnicsForDummies.net, you’ll also find some extra tips on how to spruce up the system. Another site offering an even cheaper alternative is at www.HobbyHydro.com. For more literature on the matter, KUSH suggests going to www.Amazon.com, as they have at least ten books on the subject, some as cheap as $5. Some of these starter kits are very complete, and start-up easily, while others might be more complex. Try to gauge your level of ability, and go from there. As always in the Grower’s Grove, we advise that you befriend your local Hydroponics store owner/operator, and ask a lot of questions. So even if you have a black thumb, these websites and starter kits should lead you into greener pastures. It just takes patience, diligence, and a lot of TLC. Spend a little money now, and you could save a lot down the road. 44

Good luck, and happy growing!!

Meiko Perez’s Story Told by LINDSEY ROGERS (continued on page 48)

Joey Perez had tried it all. He was diagnosed with Autism at 18 months old, and was placed on his first set of medications at 5 years old. At just 10 years old, his fragile body couldn’t handle the toxic cocktails prescribed by his doctors any longer. His mother, Mieko, was helpless. Then she received the most heartbreaking news of all. Joey was given approximately 6 months to live. The doctors had no answers, but they did agree to

her arm herself with a wealth of information to be a better advocate for parents, who are depending on her. Mieko said, “When I speak of doctors I admire and have helped me give my son life and now help me give other children life…there’s no internet research going on here, I have personally spoken with the best in their field.”

knew Joey couldn’t handle anymore dangerous medications. The medications he was on, and had been experimenting with since the age of 5 had taken their toll on little Joey’s body. His body was slowly shutting down. All of his friends and family were watching him slowly fade away. Not only had Joey became anorexic, but his legs had given out on him also. His muscles were weak, his bones were fragile, he could no longer eat or walk. His mother was told she would be planning a funeral for Joey by the years end, and was told he wouldn’t make it until his 11th birthday on March 1st, 2010. The doctors who told Mieko that news didn’t know the person they were talking to. Giving up was not an option. She

Mieko continued, “ I am thankful to the Medical Marijuana Community who stands behind me not just in“spirit” but as Joey’s soldiers like: Michel Lerner from Kush Magazine, William Beaton of 420 University, NORML’s Woman’s Alliance, Montel Williams, Other Side Farms.com, Sam Sabzehbar from medical marijuana 411.com, Devin Calloway of Ajnag.com and numerous publications through out our county and internationally.” “I’ve made it my personal mission to remain “pro-life” and pro-active with common minds and these are the people helping me, so I can help families who need my support.”

She did extensive research into the bio-med protocol set forth by Dr. Rimland. Mieko gathered research and studies and armed herself with tons of compelling evidence of the benefits of Medical Marijuana. She then presented it to Joey’s doctor. Joey’s doctor agreed that this option might help, and she wrote Joey a recommendation for Medical Marijuana. Doctors may not prescribe marijuana for medical use under federal law, though they can recommend its use under the First Amendment. That was almost a year ago. Today - Joey is THRIVING! His improvements go above and beyond anything Mieko could have ever imagined. Mieko believes Joey IS the research that is needed and that his success with Medical Marijuana proves the Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana SAVED HER SONS LIFE! period ever. Today, at age 11, Joey is flourishing with new communicative expressions, he’s gained over 40 lbs, he’s happier, healthier, better behaved & is more productively active than ever before. My son has made so many PROFOUND improvements with the help of MMJ (Medical Marijuana) –

And she is not going to tell you all treatments don’t work – as a matter of fact, they all work!! But Meiko is 80% sure there are far more families who share her story than the rate she sees on CDC reports. Meiko says that “In light of the UK announcing their new cannabis approved drug within the last few months, I’m extending my foundation and my consulting services. Medical marijuana is the future.” Meiko founded the Unconventional Foundation for Autism and hopes many will invest through donations, events, sponsorship and partnerships. This is where Joey’s mom’s information is saving lives one brownie at a time! What medical marijuana, as a biomedical treatment, has done for Joey, thirteen FDA “APPROVED” toxic medications could not do by a guessing medical community who still does not understand autism. The bottom line is revisions need to be made. Rules are broken everyday in politics to fill someone’s pocket. Don’t you think it’s about time we throw money into research that will be used to save a life? With the rise of autism, many lives will be impacted! Meiko says “I would love to tell you my son is the only child that has been given life from marijuana, but I would be wrong.”

I repeat this treatment is not a cure but, definately an effective medication that has made a difference in Joey’s life!” Meiko exclaims, “I have a message to those doctors who would rather honor insurance companies than the oath they took when they became doctors to preserve life: Medical Marijuana is safer than most foods we consume today – ask any non government funded scientist. Medical Marijuana is a natural glutamate blocker (Gluten Free) and it’s about time the autism community starts OPENLY talking about it!” Meiko is speaking out for hundreds and thousands of families that have said “we are behind you, Mieko. Please help us; help our children.” Meiko believes, this is America, and her experience is the research that those who are skeptical of the medical benefits of marijuana should be looking for. This conclusive research calls her

all day, Monday thru Sunday. She is not selling

HOPE. Just look at her son!

I’m grateful that I live in a compassionate state where families contact me with the same “science REPORT RESULT S” in their children. Marijuana gave their child life TOO!!” Meiko Perez is Joey’s MomExecutive Director of The Unconventional Foundation for Autism www.UF4A.ORG

For those of you who are spending lots of time in the gym, pumping iron and supplementing lots of protein into your diet, KUSH has an alternative for those nasty tasting whey shakes. Take a look into Hemp protein powder, and we’re sure you will enjoy the benefits of our beloved Hemp plant even more. Consisting of all 20 known amino acids, (including those 10 that are essential for human health) Hemp protein has the right quantity and proportion for the body to utilize optimally, making it one of the best proteins available. Hemp protein also provides essential fatty acids needed for balanced health - one Omega 3 to each Omega 6. With all of it’s carb content being fiber, this works well with any low carb diet. The insoluble fiber content of organic Hemp protein powder works to keep your blood sugar level stable, as well as helping keep you regular. There’s nothing better than that, right? Making the switch from your regular GNC store bought Protein barrel to Hemp protein might not seem worth your while right now, but there are even more benefits that might win you over. No bloating - after chugging down a huge whey protein shake, the usual feeling is kind of “uuuugh”. A bloated belly with plenty of protein to go work off. Being free of oligosaccharides (the component that can cause gas and upset stomach) hemp protein powders will alleviate you from feeling that protein bloat. Hemp powders are ground up plant seeds which taste natural and are easily dissolved in orange juice or even water. Another benefit to digesting your protein this way, is you won’t have that “protein

50

shake breath” afterwards. It seems like something small, until you don’t have to deal with it ever again. The benefits are exponential. Cost may be a factor in your protein choices, and there are many companies out there selling portions ranging from small jars to 5lb bags. With the Hemp protein powder being more efficient, and more productive than a lot of the “mass-manufactured” store-shelf barrel proteins, the best way to figure out which product suits you would be to start small, and then you can go large to save down the road. There are many online products available at www.Nutiva.com, or www.BobsRedMill.com. With anything that you might digest, inhale, or intake to your body or mind, it involves time, research, and trust. Take the time to research these products, and investigate whether they are right for your particular body chemistry.

If you haven’t noticed, solar power is edging its way into the mainstream conversation on alternative energy. Even baseball announcers are lending their names and voices to companies that make commercials touting how easy it is to get solar installed in your home or business. And why wouldn’t people be looking to the sun? In just one hour, the earth receives more energy than the entire world uses in a year! Solar power is the conversion of sunlight to electricity. Sunlight can be converted directly into electricity using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly with concentrating solar power (CSP), which normally focuses the sun’s energy to boil water, which is then used to provide power. According to the Solar Energy Society, the three types of photovoltaic panels are Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline and Amorphous, and each has its own set of pros and cons. The fact with photovoltaics is that it is difficult to create a commercially viable system because of the overall cost of the system required to generate a useful amount of power. Scientists explain the solution that since solar radiation is intermittent, solar power generation is combined either with storage or other energy sources to provide continuous power, like wind. As a side note, a large power plant in Germany has been demonstrated using a mix of wind, biomass, hydro and solar power generation, resulting in 100% renewable energy. SO while the sun is not out all the time—it may go behind a cloud or hide out during a storm—there is a 100% chance it will return. This is the very essence of renewable energy.

52

Solar can be expensive to install, though every year the prices go down as interest and demand increases. If the cost of installing solar panels into a three bedroom home is $20,000, the savings that the homeowner realizes by installing solar will become an attractive investment in the long run. With the housing market slowing down so considerably these past years, solar is also an excellent way to add instant value to a home while promising savings to the buyer. The good news is that many solar companies are offering low cost monthly lease options where they also provide insurance and maintenance included in the price. Most comparisons show that if you compare the price of the new electricity bill and the lease bill, the total monthly lease bill for solar is less than the original utility bill. So aside from it being a smart “green” choice, it is definitively a money saver.

LABOR DAY weekend is always a little bittersweet. Although it marks the unofficial end of the summer, it usually involves booze drenched BBQs, a day off of work to reward us for hustlin’ all year, and of course hazy music festivals where cannabis drenched vibes fill the air. FYF Fest in LA holds up the latter end of that, bringing one of the best lineups to a festival in central LA all year. Marking its 7th continuous year running, FYF Fest 2010 will take place on Saturday September 4th, 2010 at the Los Angeles State Historic Park in downtown Los Angeles. Brought together by the rad folks at Altamont and a slew of other sponsors, this will arguably be the biggest year since its 2004 inception. If you’re wondering what FYF stands for, it’s an abbreviation for ‘Fuck Yeah Fest’, which is originally what this event went by. With more mainstream influence and sponsorship, the organizers seem to only go by FYF Fest now... which is cool I guess but there was something about the name ‘Fuck Yeah Fest’ that just seemed so right. Sort of a shame that they had to abide to ‘The Man’. This year’s lineup is pretty great on the whole. There’s an overall dance music focus but it’s littered with supreme talent in indie, rock, electro, pop, and folk movements... bringing ambient, chillwave, artsy, psychedelic vibes from all around the US and the world. And although many see this festival as a collection of bands that may not normally be found on the same bill, all of this years artists bring something pretty danceable. Some other unifying themes this year could be: quality tunes, hipster-approval, blog-worthiness, and happy dancers. That all seems pretty appropriate to describe the select few that we’ve highlighted below. Make sure you see these groups at FYF 2010!

With all the chaos, wars, and natural disasters (even if man-made) going on in the world, there’s a place where it can all go away, where happiness and frivolity are abound. A place where “deep-fried“, “on a stick“, “battered“, “powdered“, “dipped in chocolate“, and “extra gooey” are all part of the menu. A place where there are great concerts, games, attractions, amusement rides, and of course, farm animals. Did I mention that there’s also horse racing? This yearly destination for all that is “fun”, is the L.A. County Fair, at the Fairplex in Pomona, running Sept. 4th- Oct 3rd. Whether you’re 7 years old, or 77 years old, there’s something for you at the L.A. County Fair. Mojo’s Jungle has re-created a real, living jungle, monkeys and all. Zip-lines and swash-buckling adventures await those at the Island Adventure - A Pirate’s Life. Village On Broadway is for those foodies out there, where guest chefs will demonstrate delicious recipes, while amateur chefs vie for blue ribbons in real cooking competitions. Our Body: The Universe Within, is a fascinating and educational look at real human bodies, and reveals many mysteries about the human anatomy. This exhibit cost $5 additionally online, and $7 at the door, but is well worth this unique view of our inner workings. Discover all that is “dino” at Jurassic Planet - fun thrills for everyone. Esmeralda’s Traveling Circus is a circus where they teach you the tricks of the trade. Learn all about the physics of juggling, the mathematics of the acrobats, and how to be a ring-master, animal wrangler, or high-wire walker. If railroads are your thing, than the Garden Railroad / Historic Trains display is for you. With an acre of miniature landscape, featuring over 3 miles of winding train tracks, this garden railroad is an educational view of the California Mission era, the Old West, Central Valley agriculture, as well as the film industry. This engaging history lesson is unique to the L.A. County Fair. Science, Biology, Agriculture, Ecology, and Earth Science all come together at the FairView Farm. This educational look at the farm teaches about milking cows, where butter comes from, and even has a dude ranch where you can learn to be a cowboy, with real horses. Go back in time at America’s Kids - A Long Time Ago. This is a bit of the Renaissance Faire vibe. Learn to be a knight, dance around a Maypole, or just enjoy the art exhibits. Celebrate Mexico’s 200 years of Independence at the Flower and Garden Pavilion. Explore this culture through the colors, flowers, and scenic beauty of this region. California’s Heritage Square allows visitors a chance to pan for gold, learn to quilt, and tour a 1920 little red schoolhouse. The Bark Park is everything canine. Learn about the world of canine competitions, and stunt shows. Maybe the most interesting attraction is From The Industrial Age To The Computer Age. This look at three centuries of artistic innovations, and the development of products through the hands of artists. This display juxtaposes a steam engine with a computer chip, each in their own way leading to new art forms. Discovering materials for over 300 years, and how those artists’ materials and methods have become refined advancements. With all the sinfully great foods to try, the many attractions to absorb, and the over 100 rides and skill games to keep the energy flowing, KUSH magazine highly suggests you make it out to the L.A. County Fair this year. It does the mind and body good. Ok, so deep-fried snickers aren’t good for you, but every once in a while….

You can tell a lot about a person based on their preferred weed-smoking technique and apparatus. With all the different ways to partake of your favorite combustible treats, it’s important to know exactly what your smoking method says about you:

Bong

You’re a college student who’s renting your apartment with absolutely no intention of ever receiving your deposit back. Those bong water stains on the floor? not your problem. Let your landlord take care of that when you move out in three years. right now, you’ve got bigger problems to deal with, like the fact that your roommate’s girlfriend keeps humiliating you with lethal headshots in call of duty. You don’t have time to pass a joint or light a pipe every couple of minutes, because you’re too busy trying your hardest to avoid virtual assassination every thirty five seconds. now get back to your game! You still have to pull an all-night study session for finals tomorrow, remember?

Pipe You’re

a clean, efficient person who absolutely hates cleaning up bong water. A pipe offers all the convenience of stay-at-home smoking without all the impending danger of a big, clunky bong full of filthy, gooey liquid. As an added bonus, your pipe can easily be taken on the road if necessary. It’s not as covert as a joint, but it’s much better for you because you suck at rolling joints. A pipe is a versatile, all-purpose smoking apparatus that mirrors your personality perfectly. Pipes are like the Willem dafoe of smoking devices: they make everything a little bit awkward, but they’re versatile enough to fit a ny role. 58

Joint

You’re a social and adventurous person. If you’re smoking a joint, then you’re in one of three places: at Bob Marley’s grave, at a rock and/or rap concert, or ducking behind the auditorium with five other dads during the intermission of your kid’s poorly-executed, but surprisingly heartwarming third grade theater production of “Willy Wonka and the chocolate Factory.” You don’t buy into the whole “smoke before you go” mentality. Instead, you prefer to smoke as you go and you welcome others to join in. This will pay off big time toward the end of your kid’s play, when you get to the Fizzy Lifting drink scene and a third-grader dressed as an old man gets flown around the stage on cables while pretending he’s not completely terrified.

Vaporizer

You are a seasoned veteran of smoking. You’re pro-level. You’re a formidable powerhouse of smoking efficiency. You’re like the Kobe Bryant of weed. Vaporizers are by far the most efficient, effective means of smoking. They’re also the healthiest and cleanest smoking method, which demonstrates that you’re concerned with your general well-being. You also probably realized that, while a vaporizer may require a considerable upfront investment, you’re going to save a lot of money on the back end (thanks to the vaporizer’s incredible efficiency). As an added bonus, you get to use the word “vapors” a lot more than most people do in everyday conversation, which makes you much cooler than everyone else.

Edibles

You’re a planner. You’re always one step ahead of the game. You’re also heading out to a place that’s sure to be a) incredibly interesting, and b) not even remotely smoke-friendly. Whether it’s a laser light show at the observatory, your cousin’s clown college graduation party, or an advanced screening of toy story 3 in 3d, you’re fully prepared to exponentially increase the awesomeness of your experience. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and reap the benefits of your tremendous foresight. Also, is there anything better than eating and getting high at the same time? That’s called “multitasking” and you’re great at it.

dIrEctIons Pour white wine, cream, and coconut milk into a saucepan; season with curry powder. Bring to a light boil over mediumhigh heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until the liquid has reduced to 1/2 cup, about 10 minutes. When the liquid has reduced, turn heat to low, and whisk in the THC butter, a few cubes at a time, until all of the butter has incorporated. Do not allow the mixture to boil or else it will separate, and you run the chance of losing your medication. When the butter has incorporated, season to taste with salt and set aside to keep warm. Heat the oil in a saute pan over medium-high heat until it begins to smoke. While the oil is heating, lightly season both sides of the salmon with garam masala and salt. Sear the salmon in the hot oil for 3 to 4 minutes on one side, then turn over, and continue cooking for 2 to 3 minutes until done. Briefly drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil, then serve immediately with the curry butter sauce.

Peach rasPberry cruMble IngrEdIEnts 1 pint fresh raspberries 3 fresh peaches, pitted and chopped 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/3 cup white sugar 1 pinch cinnamon 1 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup unsalted THC butter 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt 1 pinch cinnamon dIrEctIons Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease 6 small ramekins. In a bowl, mix the raspberries, peaches, lemon juice, 1/3 cup white sugar, and 1 pinch cinnamon.

In a separate bowl, mix the oats, THC butter, brown sugar, 1/4 cup white sugar, vanilla, salt, and 1 pinch cinnamon. Fill the prepared ramekins with equal amounts of the raspberry and peach mixture, and top with equal amounts of the oats mixture. Arrange the ramekins on a baking sheet. Bake 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until crisp and golden brown. Cool 10 minutes before serving.

Remove from oven and set aside to cool slightly. Sprinkle blueberries over the crust. Combine the 1/4 cup sugar and nutmeg; sprinkle over the blueberries. Make the topping: In a medium bowl, cream together the 5 tablespoons THC butter and brown sugar until smooth. Mix in the flour, so that the mixture is crumbly like streusel. Sprinkle over the blueberry layer. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until browned. Cool and then dust with confectioners’ sugar before cutting into bars.

Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan. Start by making the crust. In a medium bowl, stir together the 2 cups flour, 2 tablespoons white sugar, lemon zest and salt. Cut in the 1/2 cup THC butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Beat egg and vanilla together; stir into the crumb mixture until a dough forms. Press into the bottom of the prepared pan.
