planning to go Chad Uhl Classical Antiquity and Classical Languages | Expected May 2018 Planning to study abroad in Spring 2017 “As a classical antiquities and classical languages double major, I need to prioritize my courses to stay on track for graduation. After doing my own research and meeting with a study abroad program coordinator, I determined the best option for me is a semester at the University of Glasgow. I’m starting the application process now and plan to study abroad during the spring semester of 2017.”

about to depart Jake Carter Marketing and Visual Communication | Expected May 2018 Studying abroad Summer 2016 in Italy “I always knew studying abroad was an option but as a double major I didn’t think it would work for me—until I found the shortterm Typography, Papermaking, and Printing program in Italy. If you really want to study abroad, don’t make excuses for yourself; it’s easy to say that you don’t have time or that it’s too expensive. Do yourself a favor and let go of that. There are many programs that offer shorter terms over breaks as well as financial assistance.”

Currently abroad Emily Hoffman English|Expected May 2017 Studying abroad Spring 2016 in Valparaiso, Chile “I think part of the experience of being in college is learning to appreciate things from another perspective. Learning about major events in the world through the viewpoint of a different culture is absolutely fascinating, and it gives you a better understanding of the way life works elsewhere. Seeing new parts of the world is already rad, but getting college credit for it? Why wouldn’t you sign up for that?” Sophia Fortmeyer GIST & French Double | Expected May 2017 Studying Abroad Spring 2016 in Angers, France “I’ve done things I never would have imagined I was capable of six months ago. I think I’ve learned the most from the hardships that I’ve dealt with, and will take away the most from these experiences, ones that I could not have learned just by staying at KU in my routine and comfort zone.”

Alumni Recently returned Kerry McCullough Strategic Communications | Expected May 2017 Studied abroad Spring 2016 in Cork, Ireland “I am more aware of how big yet simultaneously small the world is. Studying abroad is a great way to explore other parts of the world and understand different cultures. It’s a chance to learn more about your own capabilities too.” Dylan Jacobs Journalism and Spanish | Expected May 2017 Studied abroad spring 2015 in San Jose, Costa Rica “Studying abroad gave me more confidence in myself and my ability to not only adapt but thrive in a culturally different environment. I can, without a doubt, say that my study abroad experience made me a better job candidate for current and future employment opportunities—I was recently offered an internship with Driscoll working on bilingual publications, which combines my journalism and Spanish degrees.”

recent grad Keyana Branch East Asian Languages and Cultures and Global and International Studies | May 2016 Studied abroad for the 2014-2015 Academic Year in Seoul, Korea “Studying abroad helped me realize my possible future career options in teaching, diplomacy, or research. It also helped me realize that I should be open to different possibilities and different paths that my life could take. You do not always go where you expect - sometimes you go someplace better.”

Benjamin Ale-Ebrahim Anthropology | Graduated May 2015 Studied abroad Summer 2014 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan

“Studying intensive Persian language in Tajikistan as an undergraduate enhanced my application to graduate school in the social sciences and now I am pursuing my masters degree with full funding. This summer, I will be studying abroad again in Morocco in order to improve my Arabic.” Emily Farnan Marketing | Graduated May 2015 Studied abroad Spring 2013 in Brno, Czech Republic “I gained valuable skills through study abroad that have been extremely useful in my career including independence, communication skills, and the ability to think quickly on my feet. I now work in marketing with General Mills, and I know studying abroad helped me gain my position.”

Questions to Consider Study abroad is a transformative experience that provides an opportunity to achieve your academic goals in a unique setting while also allowing you to further develop skill sets that you’ll use in your career after graduation. To help you select the program that is the best fit for your personal, academic, and professional goals, you should meet with an academic and/or career advisor to discuss the following questions: • What courses can and should I take while abroad? • When is the best time for me to study abroad? • What types of extracurricular activities are available on-site and are there opportunities for leadership positions while I’m abroad? • What are some of the desired skills and experiences that employers are seeking in my field of interest? • How can study abroad help me to develop existing or new skillsets that will be useful in my professional career? • Is foreign language proficiency important in my career? • Are there international internships or research opportunities available in my discipline? • What important deadlines (scholarship, employment, graduate school application, etc.) do I need to be aware of and is there anything I can do now to prepare?

TIP

Once you return it’s a good idea to meet with a career advisor to update your resume to include your international experiences and also to learn how to discuss your international experience in interviews or in graduate school applications.
