CONNECTION

As the world becomes smaller and smaller with globalization, the world’s creative industries are becoming larger with more people wanting to learn about other cultures. International festivals have been very integral in the sharing of culture and the growth of creative industries. As artists now travel all over the world and share their culture, indigenous knowledge and skills. Through festivals, fairs, exhibitions, conferences the creative industries grow more and more and merge into a truly global village. 8    Kwantuthu Arts Magazine    JUNE 2016

Festivals such as the United Kingdom’s Glastonbury Festival that is a five day festival held near Pilton. The festival founded by founded by Michael Eavis has a rich history that dates back to 1971 and it’s stage has hosted big acts such as U2, The Cure, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Baaba Maal and our very own Jeys Marabini. The Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA) is also another huge platform where creatives have found a platform to showcase their artistic skills and share the stage with international acts. In 2014 HIFA was listed by CNN as one of Africa’s top seven (7) festivals not to miss just highlighting the quality of artistry the festival offers. The Zimbabwean creative sector is growing and is full of amazing and talented individuals who have actively and are actively contributing to the growth of the sector. Institutions such as Children’s Performing Arts Workshps (CHIPAWO), Inkululeko Yabatsha School of Arts and Music Crossroads have developed artists that have grown to be international acts themselves flying the Zimbabwean flag high all over the world. Artists such as Mokoomba and Sandra Ndebele are good examples of such just to mention a few. Our local creative industries are important as they are now part of the world’s global village. We applaud this because our local artists and organizations are getting international recognition and becoming part of the connection.
