2008 Annual Report 3
Message from the Dean The College of Business now serves more than 3,200 undergraduates, almost 900 graduates, and more than 1,500 minors. East Carolina College was not that size 45 years ago. Yet those students are not just numbers. They are unique individuals with strengths and weaknesses, with doubts and fears, and with optimism and hope. They have a common goal to get a degree that gives them the technical and interpersonal tools that they need to succeed in the world. We don’t let ourselves forget that. The East Carolina University College of Business has a long history of being student-centered. Historically, students have enjoyed small class sizes. They still do. Students have long felt that they received a high level of personal attention from our faculty. They still do. For decades, our faculty members have had real-world business experiences coupled with high-quality academic preparation. They still do. These operational characteristics are evidence of the critical importance of students. Almost everything we do has a direct or indirect positive impact on students and their learning. Fundamentally, we exist because of our students. Don’t get me wrong; our faculty still put our students through the academic paces. A graduate or undergraduate business degree is not easy. It never was. We continually examine what we should be teaching our students to prepare them for the 21st-century business world. That educational standard changes at an ever-increasing pace. Outside the classroom, we spend considerable time and give considerable thought as to how we can maintain the “family” feel of the college, nurture the personal faculty-student relationship, and give students the technical and life skills they need. The challenge is doing all that—and more—while serving more and more students who want to get an education in the fullest sense of that word.
• Significantly increased our online course offerings and sections, in part, to provide a high-quality education to those who otherwise would not be able to obtain one. • Expanded our Graduate Office and Online Office to serve a rapidly expanding student population. • Significantly increased the number and amount of student scholarships.
Let me take a moment to highlight just a few of the initiatives we have started in the last four or five years that are directly related to our students. • Started to admit freshmen to the college. We are now a four-year college and have additional responsibility to guide and direct our students through their entire academic career. • Added and enhanced our non-curricular programs and activities to attract and retain students, from first-semester freshmen to graduation. These activities start with a new College of Business (COB) freshman welcome and orientation and continue through our senior mentor program. • Created a College of Business Career Center to provide business-centered career services to our students—and soon to our alumni. • Brought the College of Business Advising Center under the physical and operational preview of the college. • Started a Business Communications Center that will infuse written and verbal communications skills, training, and focus into the COB curriculum and our day-to-day activities. • Created a Center for Student Success. This center is the organizational and operational combination of our Career Center, COB advisors, and Business Communications Center into a focused one-stop-shop for our students. • Revised our undergraduate and graduate curriculum to meet the needs of the 21st-century workplace. These changes include additional required course work in Leadership and Professional Development and a freshman-level business strategy class. While we have already made some important changes, this will be a continual work-in-progress. 4
College of Business
All these new programs, and other initiatives too numerous to mention, are focused on helping our students be well prepared with both technical and life skills. Furthermore, many of these initiatives are possible only because of the generosity of our donors. Our freshman orientation, record number of scholarships, curricular and noncurricular program support, and scores of other activities can occur only with the charitable financial help of hundreds of people who understand the critical importance of a college education and who believe in making a difference. None of these initiatives could have been possible without considerable thought and work by the faculty, staff, and administrators of the college. And none of that thought and work would have occurred unless those people had the interests of students and their learning at the forefront of their minds and thoughts. As dean, I owe tremendous gratitude to the 150 women and men who work together to actually make this place run. You do, too. For decades, we have believed that students are at the core of what we do in the College of Business. We still do. We always will.
Dr. Frederick Niswander Dean College of Business
Year in Review Faculty, University Approve Curriculum Changes The University Curriculum Committee approved sweeping revisions for the College of Business undergraduate program, designed to teach the “whole student” in addition to technical material. The changes will target three key areas: to instill in freshmen a broader understanding of business strategy, to infuse leadership and professional development into the student experience, and to help students improve their communication skills. The new program, which was endorsed by College of Business faculty in December 2007, will apply to all students entering after fall 2009. It will be phased-in over a four-year period, beginning fall 2008.
COB Named a Top 290 Business School for 2008 The Princeton Review—known for its college rankings based on how students rate their schools—ranked the College of Business at East Carolina as a top U.S. business school in the 2008 edition of its business school guidebook.

As part of its rating in the new guide, the College of Business was featured in a twopage profile outlining academics, career and placement, student life, and admissions information. The profile also included direct quotes from business students, who applauded “the helpfulness of the instructors,” and described the College of Business faculty as “demanding and, at the same time, willing to do anything.”

Gifts Enable New Risk, Insurance Program at ECU ECU is creating a new risk and insurance concentration at the undergraduate level, thanks to two charitable gifts to the College of Business. In August 2007, the Independent Insurance Association of North Carolina announced the establishment of a $500,000 endowment to support a faculty chair for risk and insurance. Similarly, in June 2008 the North Carolina Surplus Lines Association created a $50,000 endowment to provide financial support for the new risk and insurance program. The new concentration will be developed by faculty during the 2008–2009 academic year and will be housed in the Department of Finance.
Cunanan Leadership Speaker Series Launched The Cunanan Leadership Speaker Series began during the 2007–2008 academic year, made possible by a gift from alumni Steve (’87) and Ellen (’88) Cunanan of Richboro, Pennsylvania. The Johnson & Johnson Foundation also provided matching funds. The first speaker in the series was best-selling author and businessman Juan Enriquez, who spoke to a crowd of 550 students, alumni, faculty members, and
In January 2008, the series featured internal auditor and consultant Cynthia Cooper, who is known for her role in uncovering the corporate fraud at WorldCom—one of the largest corporate scandals in U.S. history. She spoke to a standing-room only crowd of more than 600 at the Greenville Hilton. Former IBM executive J. T. (Ted) Childs Jr. served as keynote speaker for the third Cunanan Leadership Speaker Series, held in March 2008. Recognized globally for his workforce diversity programs and policies, Childs retired from IBM in 2006 after a 39-year career in human resources. His visit was co-sponsored by the Office of Equal Opportunity & Equity and Office of Institutional Diversity at ECU. The Cunanan Leadership Speaker Series is designed to bring distinguished leaders to Greenville, representing for-profit and nonprofit firms, entrepreneurial activities, government, and public affairs. Topics highlight leadership, professional development, ethics and the role of business in modern society. The series is open to the public and free of charge.
Federal Reserve Governor Frederick Mishkin Visits ECU The College of Business hosted Federal Reserve Governor Frederic Mishkin as its keynote speaker for the 21st Annual Beta Gamma Sigma Distinguished Lecture Series. Governor Mishkin’s address, titled “Does Stabilizing Inflation Contribute to Stabilizing Economic Activity?” was held on February 25. Governor Mishkin served as one of seven members of the Federal Reserve System’s Board of Governors—the primary policy-making board of the nation’s central bank—of which Ben Bernanke is the chair. He resigned to return to academia effective August 31, 2008.
2008 Annual Report 5
Year in Review Governor Mishkin has been a full professor at the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University since 1983. His research focuses on monetary policy and its impact on financial markets and the aggregate economy. He has published numerous articles and is the author of more than 15 books—including a national best-selling finance textbook written jointly with Dr. Stanley Eakins, associate dean of ECU’s College of Business. The College of Business established the Beta Gamma Sigma Distinguished Lecture Series in 1986. Held annually, the series is designed to bring notable speakers to Greenville whose perspectives enrich both the ECU community and the general public. The series is made possible by a gift from retired businessman Donald B. Boldt, who also served as an instructor and assistant dean for graduate programs in the College of Business.
Alumnus Creates New Student Scholarships Alumnus and retired businessman David Bond (BSBA ’78) and his wife, Pam, recently established more than 20 new scholarships for College of Business students. The David A. and Pamela S. Bond Access Scholarships are awarded annually to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need— targeting full-time students as well as incoming freshman with a declared major in the College of Business. The amount of each scholarship totals $5,000, covering the cost of in-state tuition, fees, and books. The first seven recipients of the David A. and Pamela S. Bond Access Scholarships were announced in April for the 2008–2009 academic year, selected through a process including the ECU Office of Financial Aid and College of Business Scholarship Committee.
Record Number of Scholarship Recipients Announced The College of Business announced a record number of scholarship recipients in April 2008, recognizing 96 undergraduate and graduate students at an awards banquet. The scholarship amounts totaled $120,000 for the 2008– 2009 academic year—almost doubling last year’s sum of $65,000. The 2008 College of Business Scholarship Awards Banquet was held at the Greenville Hilton, where more than 250 people honored the recipients at a formal dinner. Participants included students, donors, ECU faculty and staff, as well as other special guests. Scholarships are generated from endowments and funds designed to assist students enrolled in the ECU College of Business. The College of Business Scholarship Committee selects award recipients annually.
Enrollment Continues to Rise in College of Business For the third straight year, College of Business student enrollment increased both online and face to face. According to fall 2007 data, total enrollment grew approximately 11 percent from fall 2006. This latest enrollment data echoes growth taking place at the university level. In mid August 2007, East Carolina announced that approximately 25,990 students arrived on campus, its largest enrollment to date.

Faculty Highlights Dr. Paul H. Schwager Hometown: Florida and North Carolina Favorite thing about ECU students: They are real. They are not pretentious. They are hard working and appreciate the efforts you make to help them. Classes taught: Introduction to Computers, Intro-
duction to MIS, Information Systems Analysis and Design, Web Application Development for Business, Web Technologies for Business, and MIS II Teaching Philosophy: I believe in open, honest discussion. I am not an “expert” who has all the answers. I like learning and creating an environment where we can all learn together.
Dr. Paul Schwager recognizes the importance of integrating research and teaching to create synergy. “When possible, I attempt to keep my research relevant to the classroom,” he said. “In general, my research should influence my teaching and my teaching should impact my research.” One of his primary reasons for choosing to come to ECU was his perception of the balance between teaching and research. Schwager’s primary research interests deal with how technology makes change, particularly in the areas of e-commerce/e-business, the value of certification, and the acceptance and adoption of information technology (IT). He has been published in numerous journals, including the Journal of Computer Information Systems, the Journal of Information Systems Education, the Journal of Internet Commerce, and others. In addition to success as a researcher, Schwager has been recognized for his excellence in the classroom.
He was awarded the 2008 Commerce Club Teaching Excellence Award at the spring 2008 College of Business Graduate Recognition Ceremony. Schwager strives to create an environment of trust and openness in the classroom, where students feel free to take risks, venture outside themselves, and experience new things. One of his teaching goals is that his students embrace technology. “Students should take every opportunity that they can find to ‘play’ with technology. Even if the experimentation does not lead to in-depth understanding, it will increase their awareness and ability to adapt to uncertainty,” he explained. Schwager also encourages his students to take a global perspective by learning about and experiencing other cultures and to develop character and foster the habit of lifelong learning. Service to the university is also a priority for Dr. Schwager. He is a 2008 ECU Leadership Fellow, and he serves as chair of the College of Business Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, as well as vice chair of the University Curriculum Committee. He is a member of the Pirate Club, and he and his family, avid Pirate fans, enjoy ECU athletics, especially football and basketball. Schwager earned his undergraduate degree from Palm Beach Atlantic College, his MBA from Florida Atlantic University, and his PhD from Auburn University. He began teaching at ECU during the summer of 2003, after holding faculty positions at Auburn University and Appalachian State University and holding a position with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

students are a great mix between friendly and fun and hard working and competitive. Classes taught: undergraduate and graduate Strate-
gic Management Teaching Philosophy: I see much of my role in the
classroom as that of a facilitator. My hope is that this approach underscores the students’ responsibility for their own learning and allows emphasis on particularly provocative topics that are related to current events in business. Dr. Joy Karriker, who is beginning her fourth year teaching in the College of Business, is a favorite among both undergraduate and graduate students in her strategic management classes. Karriker’s teaching philosophy is built on the belief that students do not care how much the professor knows until they know how much they care. She tries to create a safe and trusting environment to foster open discussions in class. “I welcome respectful disagreement and analyses that lead to students’ developing their critical thinking and effective communication skills. I try to get to know each student as an individual with the potential to make contributions to our class and to the world of commerce,” she explains. Her students become highly engaged during class. “Dr. Karriker encouraged students to lead the class and effectively steers the conversation to touch upon the topics she wished to cover for the evening,” said MSA alumnus Eric Dutton. “Her knowledge of cur-

rent events was impressive, and she often interjected real-world examples into the dialogue to bridge the gap between theory and reality.” Karriker believes that there is a synergistic relationship between her research and her teaching. “My research improves my perspectives on the subject matter, and my interaction with the students improves my research insights,” Karriker said. Her research interests include organizational justice, organizational citizenship behavior, leadership, motivation, human resource strategy, and firm performance. She has been published in the Journal of Management, The Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, EconoQuantum, and The Journal of Change Management. Dr. Karriker was awarded the 2008 Commerce Club New Faculty Teaching Award at the College of Business Spring Graduate Recognition Ceremony. She is active in the Academy of Management and the Center for The Advancement of Research Methods and Analysis, and she serves as the onsite conference coordinator for the Southern Management Association and as secretary for the ECU chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma. She earned her PhD in business with a major in management and concentrations in organizational behavior and strategy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also has an MBA and a bachelor of arts in English and communication arts from James Madison University. Before joining ECU, she worked in various consultative and management roles with Marriott Corporation Headquarters, Commonwealth Clinical Systems, A.N. Culbertson & Company Inc., the UVA Health Services Foundation, and the UVA Medical Center and was president of Niche, LLC, a consulting firm for start-up businesses.

New tenure-Track faculty members
Left to right, Chris Keller, Audrey Scarlata, Oneil Harris, April Reed, Rose Bailey, Tom Robbins, Lucky Xue, Huigang Liang, and Josh Aaron (absent Christy Ashley and Shirley Mai).
Joshua Aaron recently joined ECU’s management department from Georgia
State University in Atlanta, where he taught entrepreneurship and business strategy. At ECU, he plans to focus on business policy. Originally from Lenoir City, Tennessee, Aaron earned his PhD in strategic management from The University of Alabama in 2008, where he also received an MBA and BS in accounting. He completed an audit internship with Ernst & Young’s Birmingham office in 2001. In the classroom, Aaron says his goal is to develop a collaborative learning environment based on interactive class discussions to supplement the assigned material. His research interests include entrepreneurship, corporate governance, healthcare management, and executive compensation. His dissertation examined the impact of executive compensation packages on firm performance, showing that a moderate level of incentive-based CEO compensation is associated with maximum firm performance. A future research stream will extend the executive compensation study to include members of boards of directors. In addition, Aaron has a research stream using the nursing home context to discuss the use of platform investments as real options. He also compares and contrasts the behaviors of for-profit facilities with those of nonprofit facilities.
Aaron has presented his work at Academy of Management meetings, the Babson-Kauffman Entrepreneurship Research Conference, and Southern Management Association meetings. Christy Ashley comes to ECU from Fairfield University in Connecticut,
where she served as an assistant professor of marketing. At East Carolina, Ashley will primarily teach Retail Management and Consumer Behavior. Ashley earned her PhD in marketing from The University of Rhode Island in 2006. She also holds an MBA from the University of Miami and a BS in psychology from Sacred Heart University. Her primary research interests include customer experience management— especially in retail settings—and the formation and dissolution of emotional connections with brands. In her dissertation, Ashley focused on information processing in consumer-brand relationships. In describing her teaching philosophy, Ashley said, “I aim to provide students with opportunities to exercise analytical and critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills—using real-world situations from the multi-billion dollar experiment that is going on in the world around them.” She added that she enjoys teaching in a way that shares her passion for learning about consumers and marketing.

New tenure-Track faculty members Outside of her university-related activities, Ashley has performed market research consulting for CVS/Caremark. She also gained industry experience through marketing positions with Federated Direct, Ampex Corporation, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Ashley lives in Bridgeton, NC, with her husband Jason Oliver, who also teaches in the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management at ECU. Rose Bailey joins the Department of Accounting with 25 years of business
experience—having practiced as a CPA in both North Carolina and Kentucky, as well as an attorney in North Carolina and Texas with both regional and international firms. She has served on the faculty of Gardner-Webb University and NC A&T State University, teaching federal tax research, business entity taxation, individual taxation, and estate and gift. She also has experience as a lecturer in estate planning in the certified financial planning programs for Queens University and UNC–Charlotte. She earned her JD from St. Mary’s University School of Law and her LLM in Taxation from New York University School of Law. She also holds her BSBA in accounting from Appalachian State University. Bailey teaches tax at ECU, with her primary research interests in estate planning and wealth transfer taxation, as well as tax policy issues driving legislative and judicial tax reform. She is a frequent lecturer with the NC Association of CPAs and has received several Outstanding Discussion Leader awards. Originally from Charlotte, NC, Bailey recently returned to her home state after spending 15 years in San Antonio, Texas. Oneil Harris earned his PhD in July 2008 from Florida Atlantic University,
where he taught corporate finance and financial markets for two years. His research interests include corporate restructuring, shareholder rights, and entrepreneurial finance. Beginning fall 2008, he will teach two sections of Financial Analysis and Planning at East Carolina. “My goal is to cultivate a learning environment in which students not only understand and embrace finance but are also wellversed in its applications,” Harris explained. “Consequently, my approach is primarily analytical. Once the students grasp the fundamentals of each theory, I demonstrate how the principles are applied in real-world analyses.” Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Harris said that he is always prepared for class, approaching each lecture with enthusiasm. He went on to say that he is constantly looking for ways to improve his teaching styles. “Throughout each semester, I take into account the suggestions proposed by students and seriously consider the comments I receive on the end of semester evaluations,” Harris said. “Where applicable, I incorporate the suggestions of students without compromising the credibility and rigor of the class.” Christopher Keller comes to Pirate country from both Indiana University,
where he was a visiting scholar, and the University of Florida, where he served as visiting assistant professor during the summer months. He also has teaching experience from Hawaii Pacific University and U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. Originally from Winchester, Tennessee, Keller earned his PhD in decision sciences from Indiana University in 1991. He also holds a JD from The University of Chicago Law School. In addition, Keller has an MA in mathematics 12

from Indiana University and a BS in mathematics from Florida International University. His research interests consist of statistical decision analysis and operational planning, including forecasting, estimating demand, auctions, inventories and supply chains. Separately, in the law and economics framework, he’s interested in the allocation of legal rights and remedies. Beginning fall 2008, Keller will teach Business Decision Modeling in the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management at ECU. Huigang Liang joins the Department of Management Information Systems from Temple University in Philadelphia. He also has teaching experience at Florida Atlantic University and has taught a number of undergraduate, graduate, and PhD-level courses—including Programming, Database Management, System Analysis and Design, Project Capstone, Structural Equation Modeling, and Health-Care Information Systems.
He earned his PhD in health-care information systems from Auburn University in 2003. He also holds an MS in Software Engineering from Auburn University. Originally from China, Liang has published more than 40 articles in scholarly journals, book chapters, and international conferences. At ECU, Liang will teach Management Information Systems and Software Design and Development beginning fall 2008. When discussing his teaching philosophy, Liang said he integrates enthusiasm, passion, care, and knowledge into his teaching—helping students find their own path to success. “I strongly value learning by doing and believe that students should gain realworld experience in classrooms,” he said. “To me, each student is different and deserves respect.” He concluded, “I also believe that a teacher should not fear continuous learning to keep his teaching materials up-to-date, especially in my field where knowledge is updated at an amazing speed.” Enping (Shirley) Mai, who is originally from Guangzhou, China, joins the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management after spending six years at Syracuse University.
While at Syracuse, Mai taught Business Calculus, Probability and Statistics, and Marketing Research. She also served as a visiting scholar at Stanford University in summer 2007. Mai earned her PhD in business administration from Syracuse University in May 2008, and she holds an MS in applied statistics from Syracuse. In addition, she has a BS in applied mathematics with a minor in international finance from Zhongshan (Sun Yat-Sen) University in China. Her research interests include statistical modeling for marketing, customer base analysis, customer lifetime value, and network externalities. Mai’s dissertation explored different models of identifying lapsed customers in a non-contractual setting. At ECU, Mai will teach Marketing Management, beginning fall 2008. She says her teaching philosophy includes discovery, creation, encouragement, transformation, and confidence. When Mai isn’t teaching, she enjoys playing volleyball and tennis. She was recently married in 2007.
April Reed joins the Department of Management Information Systems from DePaul University in Chicago, where she taught Information Systems Project Management, Introduction to Computer Science, as well as IT, Economy, and Society.
Reed earned her MBA from DePaul University in 1990, and she holds a BA in public administration and a BGS in computer science from Roosevelt University. She completed her PhD from DePaul University in June 2008. Reed’s research interests include virtual project teams and project risk. Her dissertation explores critical risk factors on virtual software projects. Beginning fall 2008, she will teach Introduction to Management Information Systems. Reed says her teaching philosophy involves “engaging students by relating real-world work experiences to the course material to bring life to the subject matter.” Originally from Calumet City, Illinois, her previous work experience includes more than 20 years as an IT systems analyst and IT project manager for companies such as Harris Bank, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Commonwealth Edison, and GATX Corporation.
“I believe that education opens doors, and with the right instruction, guidance, and motivation, our students can do anything.” —Audrey Scarlata
Tom Robbins joins the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Manage-
ment from Penn State, where he taught Statistics, Operations Management, and Supply Chain Management. In 2007, he earned a PhD in Business administration and operations research from Penn State, where he focused on supply chain and information systems. Robbins also holds an MBA from Case Western Reserve University and a BS in electrical engineering from Penn State. Prior to entering the PhD program at Penn State, Robbins gained 20 years of professional experience in industry and consulting—including service as a partner in the consulting operation of Ernst & Young and later as vice president at CGEY after the company merged with Cap Gemini. He also has experience working with IBM, GE, Boston Market, and several small consulting firms.
In the classroom, Scarlata said that students require a mix of high-level theoretical descriptions of concepts as well as hand-on technical instruction. “My goal is not only to ensure that my students leave my class with a better understanding of how information systems support the business function but also to prepare them for success in their future careers,” Scarlata said. “I believe that education opens doors, and with the right instruction, guidance, and motivation, our students can do anything.” Her prior industry experience includes working as a staff accountant with AEI Resources and a cost accountant with Bosch Rexroth.
Robbins’ research interests include service operations, optimization under uncertainty, and the impact of uncertainty on operations. He will teach Business Decision Modeling at ECU.
Yajiong “Lucky” Xue began teaching in the College of Business’s MIS department in spring 2008. She comes to ECU from Florida Atlantic University, where she served as a visiting assistant professor.
“I try to make my classes demanding but interesting,” Robbins said, discussing his teaching philosophy. “I seek to include rigorous analysis but focus on practical real-world problems. I try and prepare my students for business careers by giving them the skills and insight they need to be successful.”
Originally from Wuxi Jiangsu, China, Xue said she embraces teaching as an opportunity to inspire students. “To me, teaching is not about lecturing to students,” she explained. “It is about presenting theories and concepts to students in a way so they can integrate this information into their own life experience.”
Originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania, Robbins has three children: Jonathan (9), Hope (8), and Sophia (4).
Xue earned her PhD in management information technology and innovation from Auburn University in 2004. Her dissertation explored hospital information systems development in Chinese hospitals. She also holds an MA in management information systems from Auburn University and a BS in international business from China Pharmaceutical University.
Audrey Scarlata will teach Accounting Information Systems at ECU, begin-
ning fall 2008. Originally from Ashland, Kentucky, she expects to earn her PhD in accounting from the University of Kentucky by May 2009. Scarlata also holds an MBA and BBA from Morehead State University. Scarlata’s research interests include Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) software, investor decision making, Internet financial reporting, decision aids, and the accountant stereotype. Her dissertation will explore XBRL—an emergent, highly visible tagging language—and whether it can substitute for investor knowledge, improve decision accuracy, and reduce decision effort by increasing the use of directed information search.
Her research interests include health-care information systems, decision making processes, IT governance, global information systems, and IT strategy. She has published more than 40 articles in scholarly journals, book chapters, and international conferences—including 18 journal articles in MIS Quarterly, Communications of the ACM, Decision Support Systems, and IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, among others. Xue is currently studying outsourcing in drug discovery. Beginning fall 2008, she will teach Introduction to MIS and Enterprise Infrastructure at ECU.

College of Business Faculty Participate in UNC BRIDGES Program For the past three years, the College of Business has enjoyed strong participation in the BRIDGES program, a statewide professional development course for women in higher education. Sponsored by UNC–Chapel Hill, the annual program is designed to help women identify, understand, and move into leadership roles. Dr. Margaret O’Hara, assistant dean for online programs, currently serves on the BRIDGES Advisory Board. She completed the program in 2006. “The BRIDGES program was a valuable academic experience for me,” O’Hara said. “It helped develop my leadership skills, while also giving me the opportunity to network with other women throughout the state. I’m especially thrilled that other women in the college continue to benefit from the program.” In addition to O’Hara, two other College of Business faculty members have participated in the BRIDGES program: Dr. Shanan Gibson (MGMT) completed the program in 2007 and Dr. Judith Hunt (MGMT) recently graduated in 2008. To participate, women are selected through an application process and review.

student spotlights Name: Andrew H. Griffin Hometown: Fuquay-Varina, NC Major: BSBA, Financial Services Classification: Senior
As student body president of East Carolina, senior Andrew Griffin is used to a hectic pace.
“I believe the College of Business does the best job on campus of placing their students on the right track for success,” he said. “It seems like every week I’m getting e-mails for job opportunities or internships. There are immense opportunities set forth for every student.”
On March 26, Griffin was elected 2008–2009 president of the Student Government Association, the official representative governing body for ECU students. He took office on April 28, and he hasn’t slowed down since.
Griffin said he ultimately wants to own his own business, while also carving out time to coach basketball, football, or baseball. He plans to pursue his MBA at East Carolina after completing his undergraduate course work.
In addition to his student government responsibilities, Griffin is involved with Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, ECU Rugby, Ducks Unlimited, and Order of Omega—a coed honor society that recognizes the top three percent of fraternity and sorority members by GPA at East Carolina.
Growing up in a family with two older brothers, Griffin credits his parents for his ambition and drive.

became excited by all of the potential offered by the College of Business.
Originally from Fuquay-Varina, Griffin said he decided to become a business major after attending freshman orientation at ECU, when he
“Both parents taught me to be committed to whatever I do, always doing my best with integrity and always being a good person,” he said. “I’m excited about the future, but for now I’m fully immersed into ECU—focusing primarily on my university work and involvement in other organizations.”
Name: Andrea Kay Hernandez Hometown: Yuma, Arizona Classification: First-year MBA student GPA: 3.92
With a husband in the military and two boys under age five, Andrea Hernandez believes her education over the past few years has been a team effort. In December 2007, Hernandez earned her BSBA in managerial finance from ECU, oftentimes commuting two hours from Jacksonville, NC, where her husband David was stationed while she was in school. During her last semester as an undergraduate student, her husband was deployed to Iraq—but Hernandez stayed on track and graduated.
Andrea Hernandez
“Many people thought I should have taken the semester off, but completing my degree made me a stronger person,” Hernandez said. “I only wish David could have been there for graduation. We’d worked so hard for so long, and it was a meaningful occasion.” Hernandez began the online MBA program at ECU in fall 2008, completing her course

work part-time from her family’s new home in Yuma, Arizona. She also plans to work full-time after she gets settled in—hoping to ultimately be the chief financial officer for a small to mid-sized corporation by the time she’s 40. Although time constraints prevent her involvement with extracurricular activities, Hernandez is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She was also honored with the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award for 2008. “I’m so glad that I made the decision to come to ECU,” Hernandez said, reflecting on her time at East Carolina. “Being on campus, I realized there is something truly unique about the ECU and College of Business communities. The ECU Campus has a community that truly cares and shows the most school spirit I’ve ever seen! It is contagious, and I couldn’t leave without feeling pride in my alma mater.”

student spotlights Name: Amy Lenfestey Hometown: Cary, NC Classification: First-year medical student and recent MBA graduate GPA: 4.0
As the valedictorian and student body president of Southeast Raleigh High School, Amy Lenfestey bounced back and forth between choosing medicine or business. When she decided to attend East Carolina, however, she chose to pursue both. Lenfestey recently earned both her MBA and BSBA from ECU, graduating with her master’s degree this past May. She completed both degrees in just four years—all while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Amy Lenfestey
Beginning August 2008, Lenfestey will be a first-year medical student at the Brody School of Medicine at ECU—another challenge she’s ready to tackle. Originally from Cary, NC, Lenfestey says she ultimately plans to own and run a medical practice in North Carolina—again combining medicine and business.
In addition to her stellar academic record, she served as a graduate assistant for the Small Business Institute (SBI) at ECU in 2007–2008, and her team’s SBI case won fourth place in the 2008 National Case Competition. Lenfestey is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and the Student Pirate Club. “I love being involved with ECU activities,” Lenfestey said. “The people are the best part of this university—including the administrators, professors, and students. There’s a great camaraderie among everyone.” She says she encourages all students to work hard and enjoy their classes and professors. She also urges undergraduates to get involved in clubs and seriously consider earning an MBA in the future. “Never, ever give up!” Lenfestey said. “Set your goals ahead of time and then work to achieve them step by step. Everyone is capable of excellence. It is recognizing this early that makes the difference.” When she’s not hitting the books, Lenfestey enjoys traveling, being outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.
Name: Michelle Miranda Ross Hometown: Charlotte, NC Major: BSBA, finance Classification: Senior GPA: 3.58
Michelle Ross grew up in Charlotte as the oldest of five siblings—and never a dull moment. She initially planned to major in interior design at East Carolina, but a business law course changed her career path to finance. Once she has her BSBA, Ross will be the first in her immediate family to have a college degree.
Michelle Ross
In addition to being a full-time student, Ross works 20 hours per week at ARAMARK catering on campus, where she has worked for three years. She was recently promoted to a student manager position, thanks to her hard work. This past summer, she also completed an internship with CP Financial, a Greenville-based financial consulting group. When she’s not working, Ross is active in Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity, where she serves as vice president of membership and cochair for Just

Cause. She is also a past member of the Black Student Union and the Student Organization for Animal Rights. Ross said she encourages all business students to get involved in campus activities and take advantage of the College of Business’s Career Services office. “It’s really important to start networking as soon as possible—and there is no better way to get your name out than to go to Career Services, especially when it comes to resume building. I strongly believe it is never too early to have a good resume,” she said. After graduating in 2009, Ross plans to earn her real estate license and MBA. “Albert Einstein once said, ‘The key to success is to do something you love,’ and I love my major and learning everything there is about the business world,” Ross said. “A degree in finance is beyond just satisfying, because I love the field and there are so many opportunities ahead.”

student spotlights Name: Miyuki “Mimi” Sheerin Hometown: Tokyo, Japan Major: BSBA, general business Classification: Senior GPA: 3.76
Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Miyuki “Mimi” Sheerin admits she is not the typical undergraduate student at ECU. Prior to enrolling at East Carolina, Sheerin held a product management position at a telecommunications company in Raleigh for eight years—a job that incorporated her bilingual skills and required international travel. When the corporate office closed its Raleigh branch, however, she decided to use the disappointing situation as an opportunity to return to school and complete her bachelor’s degree in business.
Miyuki Sheerin
Today, Sheerin lives in the Triangle with her husband and two rescued dogs, and she is pursuing her BSBA completely online through full-time distance education. “The online degree program is very good,
enabling me to take advantage of the quality teaching professionals and curriculum offered at ECU,” Sheerin said. “I have found that a great deal of what is taught in ECU’s business program is used by businesses on a daily basis.” Sheerin advises students to keep an open interest in all classes and get involved, as everything students learn will be useful to succeed in various business careers. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key International. Sheerin also belongs to the Executive Women’s Golf Association—a nonprofit organization that supports career-oriented women golfers nationwide—and she volunteers to help young girls get involved in golf. Sheerin said her ultimate goal is to pass the Project Management Professional certification, since she enjoys managing projects. This semester, however, she looks forward to college football and a successful season for the Pirates—especially since her husband is an NC State alumnus.
Name: Sean A. Wise Hometown: Greenville, NC Major: BSBA, finance and MIS (double concentration) Classification: Senior GPA: 3.73
Except for two weeks when he considered construction management as a freshman, Sean Wise knew he was destined to be a business major. It also helped that his father, Harold Wise, lectures in the Department of MIS—not to mention the purple blood that runs in his family. With a double concentration in finance and MIS, Wise ultimately plans to pursue a graduate degree in financial engineering and a career in investment banking. Already, he is on the right track.

This past summer, Wise worked as an intern with The Vanguard Group’s retail investor division in Charlotte. He also serves as president of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) and is a member of the Financial Management Association (FMA) and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
In addition to his activities, Wise loves to travel—especially to Chicago. He and his father are currently visiting as many Major League Baseball ballparks as possible, tallying more than 16 to date. Greenville is home to Wise, and he says he loves living in eastern North Carolina, especially since he knows his career will one day take him to a larger metropolitan area. “ECU has been amazing,” Wise said. “The professors take an interest in your overall well being and success. There have been numerous times when I’ve contacted professors for help after I took their class. None have ever hesitated to lend me a hand.” Wise believes students at all levels should take advantage of the services offered by the College of Business—especially the Career Services office. He also recommends getting involved with student organizations. “I love ECU and all of the opportunities available,” Wise said. “I can’t imagine being anywhere but Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on a Saturday in the fall.”

Graduate programs
The College of Business offers the master of business administration (MBA), the medical doctor/master of business administration (MD/MBA), the master of science in accounting (MSA), and the combined bachelor of science in accounting/master of science in accounting (BSA/MSA) graduate degrees. Our MBA trains professionals as effective and responsible administrators in public, private, and nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on analytical, organizational, and communication skills that develop competencies across a wide spectrum of business disciplines. Our MSA and combined BSA/MSA train students for careers in professional accounting. Our students gain an in-depth knowledge of auditing, taxation, financial accounting, cost accounting, and accounting systems, and are prepared to successfully complete the CPA exam in their last semester. Our MD/MBA prepares medical students and physicians to meet the challenges of effective practice management, system efficiencies, service affordability, provider collaboration, and human resource development in the health-care industry. All of our graduate degree programs are designed for both business and nonbusiness undergraduates and require no prerequisite course work or business experience for admission. More than half of all our graduate business students hold undergraduate degrees from fields other than business. Each program is highly customized to the individual student based on past academic experience
and performance, long-term career goals and aspirations, online or campus classes, and pace. Of our 600-plus MBA students for the spring 2008 semester, two-thirds attended part-time and selected online classes. We also offer 12 graduate business certificates that may be used as an optional concentration. Certificates require additional course work from both the College of Business and other departments that allow our students to obtain a fundamental knowledge base in an area that pertains to his or her chosen career path. Available certificates are: Development and Environmental Planning Finance Health-Care Management Hospitality Management International Management Management Information Systems Professional Investment Management and Operations Security Studies School Business Management Sports Management Supply Chain Management Tax

beta gamma sigma Founded in 1913, Beta Gamma Sigma is the national honor society for collegiate schools of business. Chapters may only be chartered with programs accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest national recognition a student of business can receive in an undergraduate or master’s program at a school accredited by the AACSB. Of the 1,600 institutions with degree programs in business, only 504 are accredited by the AACSB with 408 currently having active chapters of Beta Gamma Sigma. To be eligible for membership, a student must rank in the top of his or her class. The Gamma Chapter at ECU is proud to have been inducting academically superior undergraduate students since 1967. The Master of Business Administration program has been accredited and has been honoring graduate level students since 1976.

From the Advancement Office The beginning of East Carolina’s second century is an exciting time for all of us—an occasion not only to celebrate our legacy of innovation and achievement but also to develop a vision that will guide our next 100 years. As we look to the future, it is clear we must find new ways to enrich our students and community while building on the strengths that have made us distinctive for so long: remarkable faculty members who are dedicated teachers and outstanding researchers, engaged students who share a passion to make a difference in their communities, and a close-knit environment that fosters learning and the exchange of ideas. We are marking our centennial with a special fundraising effort, held in tandem with the university’s Second Century Campaign. This effort is designed to strengthen all the essential elements needed to help our students become capable, committed business and community leaders. To compete with the finest institutions in the state and beyond, we must ensure that ECU graduates continue to be taught by exceptional faculty in a state-ofthe-art, technology-infused environment. Our needs—and our students’ needs— continue to grow as we expand our curriculum and enroll record-setting numbers of students. Your support is needed to help the college realize its potential. We appreciate your generosity—and we look forward to keeping you informed about progress at the College of Business during the coming year. Thank you for your continued support. Colin O’Connor

alumni spotlights When Phillip Dixon (MGMT ’71) first came to East Carolina, he hoped to play football and become a high school teacher and coach. Plans changed, however, when an injury blitzed his football plans— and he took an introductory course in Phillip R. Dixon Sr. business. After that, Dixon says he knew (MGMT ’71) business would lay a foundation for whatever career path he chose. While at ECU, Dixon became involved in numerous campus activities—including service as vice president of the student body. He also met his future wife, Candace “Mamie” Cicerone, who lived next door at the Chi Omega sorority house. Another course in business law piqued Dixon’s interest in a legal profession. After graduating from ECU in 1971, he attended UNC-Chapel Hill and earned his JD in 1974. Dixon returned to Greenville in 1975 to join the law firm of Gaylord & Singleton. Two years later, he opened his own law office—now Dixon, Allen & For more than 19 years, Danny Scott’s career has thrived at Anheuser-Busch, with positions ranging from production supervisor at the Williamsburg Brewery to various roles in operations, human resources and brand marketing— including director of value brands (Busch, Danny R. Scott Natural Families of (MGMT ’84) Beer, Ice Beers, Malt Liquors) and senior director of branded products. More recently, he was named vice president of diversity—a new position focused on developing and implementing Anheuser-Busch’s company-wide strategy for diversity and inclusion. He also assists the company’s individual business unit leaders in developing their diversity plans, fosters development of Employee Resource groups, and works closely with the Executive Diversity Council. “In my new role, there are no challenges—just opportunities,” Scott explained. “Diversity may be a common buzzword in today’s society, but at 44

As part of his law practice, Dixon has represented numerous public bodies, including Greenville Utilities Commission, 21 school systems, 10 mental health centers, five community colleges, numerous municipalities, and Carolina Donor Services, which works with medical schools throughout the state to provide organ and transplant services to 79 out of 100 counties in North Carolina. Dixon has also served the university in numerous capacities. In 1983, he helped organize the Commerce Club, the College of Business’s annual giving society, and he holds the first stock certificate ever issued. ECU Alumni Association and later served as the College of Business representative on the ECU Alumni Association Board, ultimately serving as president. In addition, he has been president of the Pirate Club—a role that Dixon says was one of his most enjoyable. Dixon has served several terms on the ECU Board of Trustees, including one term as chair. He is currently in the final year of his first four-year term on the UNC-Board of Governors. In addition to his university-related service, Dixon has been a strong civic leader. He has received distinguished service awards from numerous associations. True Pirates like their father, two of Dixon’s three sons—David and Scott—attended ECU. His oldest son, Phil, followed in Dixon’s footsteps and attended law school after graduating from UNCChapel Hill. He plans to join Dixon, Allen & Garcia in fall 2008—bringing his wife, Betty, and baby boy, Phillip III, back home to Greenville. “Business is the best background you could ever have,” Dixon said, reflecting on his time at ECU. “In many ways, East Carolina offers a lot of hope for this region. I feel fortunate to have been here, and with education comes certain privileges and responsibilities—including the responsibility to give back to the university and the community.” Scott says he initially chose to attend ECU because of its strong business school and track program. His fondest memories of East Carolina include participating in Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity activities, playing basketball in Memorial Gym, partying at the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, and hanging out at the Crow’s Nest. He recently established a new diversity enhancing scholarship at ECU, along with the AnheuserBusch Foundation Matching Gift Program. The $52,000 endowment will fund the first diversitybased scholarship offered through an academic college at ECU.
He continued, “When a company like ours has its finger on the pulse on the global marketplace, it provides even more incentive to encourage interaction and exchange of ideas with individuals of all races, religions, and abilities.”
“This scholarship is a way for me to help deserving students attain a quality education, while also ref lecting the university’s strong commitment to diversity and education,” Scott said. “No doubt my time at ECU prepared me for the business world. The curriculum provided basic business concepts that served me well as I entered the workforce. The experiences outside of the classroom at ECU also played a key role in my personal maturation.”
Although he now lives near St. Louis, Missouri, Scott said he returns to ECU’s campus every three to four years. He also has family living in Henderson, NC.
Scott’s advice to students: “Plan, execute your plan, measure the success of your plan—and be flexible. Hope is not a business strategy.”

alumni spotlights In the 46 years since Bob and Margaret Ward graduated from East Carolina, the couple has contributed significantly to the growth and progress of their alma mater. The Wards grew up in Greensboro. Although they attended different high schools in Guilford Robert A. Ward County, the two were (ACCT ’62) teenage sweethearts. When Margaret left Greensboro for East Carolina, so did Bob. They were married in 1961. Bob Ward may have enrolled at ECU for romantic reasons, but he said the school armed him with a quality education. “I received an excellent accounting background, which prepared me to compete nationally with anybody,” he said. “In 1964, when I was certified as a CPA, there were only 2,418 of us in North Carolina. I was well prepared to be successful at my chosen career.” After graduation, Ward went to work for A. M. Pullen & Company of Raleigh as a staff accountant. In 1965, he entered the textile business as the accounting manager for Stedman Manufacturing Company of Asheboro. In 1967, Ward moved to Universal Textured Yarn Inc., of Mebane, where he was a vice president. The company became Unifi Since retiring in 2005 as an attorney and partner with Helms, Mulliss & Wicker of Charlotte—a career that spanned 24 years—Robert Brinkley (ACCT ’78) is enjoying his newfound free time. Throughout his law practice, Brinkley Robert G. Brinkley balanced his intensive work with service to (ACCT ’78) East Carolina—all while living across the state. In fact, he continues to serve on various civic and charitable boards, including the ECU Board of Trustees and the ECU Foundation Board. He is also a former director and member of the executive committee of the ECU Board of Visitors, and he served on the Steering Committee for the ECU Baseball Stadium Campaign. Originally from Greenville, Brinkley said he chose to attend ECU for several reasons, including the excellent academic reputation of the College of Business and the opportunity to play Division I 46

Inc., in 1971, where he served as executive vice president of finance and administration and was a member of the Board of Directors. He ultimately served as executive vice president and chief financial officer for the company until he retired. The Wards’ professional and civic involvements are numerous. Bob Ward served on the ECU Board of Trustees (BOT) for 10 years from 1989–99, including the role of chairman. Margaret Ward is currently in her eighth year on the BOT—giving the Wards a combined 18 years of service. Only one other husband-wife couple in the university’s history has served on the BOT. In addition, Bob Ward is a member of the ECU Foundation Board and ECU College of Business Advisory Council. He also served on the steering committee for

He was honored with the Arthur H. Carter National Accounting Scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Brinkley also helped win the Southern Conference Baseball Championship—one of his fondest memories while at East Carolina. Throughout his undergraduate education, Brinkley said the College of Business challenged him and con-
the 1986 ECU School of Business Golden Anniversary Campaign. In 1995, he served as the cochair for the university’s Shared Vision Campaign, which raised more than $50 million. Ward is involved in MidCarolina Bank in Burlington, and he has served on the Board of Trustees for Elon University. Margaret Ward is past president of the ECU Alumni Association and is a current member of the ECU Foundation Board. She is also the past president of Elon University’s Board of Visitors, and she serves on the NC Film Council, an appointed position by Governor Easley. The ECU Board of Trustees voted in 1992 to honor the couple for their long and varied service to the university with the naming of the Ward Sports Medicine/Physical Education Building, where the Student Development program is housed thanks to a $500,000 endowment funded by the Wards. In 1993, the Wards donated to ECU a residence and lot on East Fifth Street across from the main campus, where their son Bert lived while studying at East Carolina, graduating in 1991. The home, called the Ward Guest House, accommodates special visitors to the university. They made an additional gift to The ECU Foundation Inc. to furnish the home. Although the Wards are retired today and spend most of their time in Charleston, SC, they still maintain a residence in Burlington—mainly to see their grandchildren and stay connected to family. firmed that he could compete with students from any college or university. Shortly after ECU, he earned a JD from the Wake Forest University School of Law, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1981. When he decided to attend law school, Brinkley said he had no doubt that he would succeed. He earned a full merit-based scholarship to Wake Forest Law School and also finished first in his law school class. “My strong background in tax and financial accounting prepared me very well to pass the CPA exam and to concentrate on business, tax, and real estate law,” Brinkley said, reflecting on his time at East Carolina. “ECU gave me the foundation upon which I have built my career.” When asked what advice he would give to students in the College of Business, Brinkley encourages students never to take short cuts, always focus on the long term, and understand the context of what they are studying. In his free time, Brinkley enjoys time with his wife and two children—Samuel Thomas Brinkley, a senior at Providence Day School in Charlotte, and Rebecca Frances Brinkley, a sophomore at The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut.
