Airlink aircraft upgrade enhances capacity and economic opportunities
The launch of Airlink's new 75-seater Embraer E170 jet service at Richards Bay Airport marked a pivotal moment for uMhlathuze Municipality's economic prospects.
The attendance of Mayor Xolani Ngwezi, Airlink’s Chief Executive and Managing Director, Mr. Rodger Foster, and ACSA’s Regional General Manager, Mr. Nkosinathi Myataza, underscored the collective vision to propel uMhlathuze’s growth trajectory. Forming a strategic partnership, ACSA entered into a multi-year contract with uMhlathuze Municipality to manage the Richards Bay Airport after its closure of close to two years due to Covid-19.
ACSA noted that since the reopening of the airport Airlink was the only carrier that returned to operate out of Richards Bay, servicing the Johannesburg-Richards Bay route, out of the three that previously operated from Richards Bay.
Since resuming its operations, the growing demand for passenger and cargo services at Richards Bay Airport has seen Airlink's fleet operating at full capacity, necessitating the upgrade from the J41 (25-seater) to the muchneeded larger E170 (75-seater) aircraft.
The ACSA-uMhlathuze partnership will see the transfer of skills and bring much-needed revitalisation of the local economy through the optimisation of the transport infrastructure, where ACSA will play a pivotal role.
Mayor Ngwezi emphasized Richards Bay’s vital role in South Africa’s economy, highlighting the necessity for reliable air services to connect the city’s businesses with broader markets. In his speech, he lauded the new jet service’s potential to bolster connectivity and spur economic growth. Richards Bay, primarily a commercial tourism city, stands to benefit as the increased seating capacity positions it as an attractive destination for both corporate and holiday travelers.
Mr. Rodger Foster emphasized Airlink’s commitment to meeting the region’s escalating demand for enhanced air services. Airlink currently operates flights between Richards Bay and more than 45 destinations within South Africa. He expressed the importance of efficient and reliable air connections for uMhlathuze’s businesses and industries, affirming Airlink’s dedication to facilitating seamless connectivity.
Mr. Nkosinathi Myataza, ACSA’s Regional General Manager, commended the strategic partnership between Airlink and Richards Bay Airport and highlighted the positive impact this collaboration will have on economic development and tourism potential in the region.
Richards Bay, a thriving commercial tourism hub, stands to benefit immensely from this upgrade, attracting both business and leisure travelers.
The City of uMhlathuze, grateful for Airlink’s substantial investment, looks forward to reaping the benefits of enhanced connectivity and economic growth.
The Partnership as part of ACSA’s turnaround
ACSA's recovery is largely driven by the rapid turnaround in domestic travel, which underscores the importance of this market's contribution to its business. In October 2023, 2 800 passengers were processed through the airport, which indicates a 230% increase since the airport re-opened its doors for business.
ACSA noted that the upgrade at Richards Bay Airport is not only a milestone for Airlink but also crucial for the airport and the community of uMhlathuze. With the increased seating capacity, there will be more opportunities for travel and enhanced cargo movement.
Airlink’s new jet service plays a vital role in fostering connectivity and economic opportunities, aligning with the city’s plans for expansion and development.
Of more significance is ACSA’s alignment with the principles stated in the White Paper on National Civil Aviation Policy as explained by ACSA Regional General Manager, Nkosinathi Myataza:
"Airport development should not be considered in isolation, but be integrated into all national, provincial, and municipal economic and spatial development initiatives. At the same time, airport development should also meet the social needs \nd objectives of local communities. There should therefore be synergy between airport development and the development strategies of all spheres of government."
Richards Bay Local Airport Manager, Langa Ndebele says "Richards Bay Airport is an important airport in the region, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers from an economic hub of some considerable force, and the role that the airport is playing in the continued economic development of this region is significant.
"This is a positive development that speaks to the robust and steady recovery of the domestic aviation sector. We wish Airlink all the best and may they see further growth and expansion in the future," concludes Mr. Ndebele.
In his closing remarks at the launch, the City of uMhlathuze Mayor, Xolani Ngwezi, extended the City’s gratitude to Airlink for this significant investment that will enhance uMhlathuze’s connectivity and contribute to its economic growth. He also thanked ACSA for the mutually beneficial partnership that it has with the City of uMhlathuze.
