[ start dicta-phone ] Good morning. Welcome to the class! Today we are going to learn about a new sentence structure. You use it to support what you are saying, with a reason. Like the other classes, you will not need any pens or notebooks. I will give you a sheet at the end of the class with some notes to take home. Vocabulary & Meaning Matching Game We are also going to start by learning some new words. On the BLACK CARDS is a word. On the BLUE CARDS is the meaning of the words. [ give students vocab cards ] Together as a group, I want you to match each WORD with its MEANING.

If the doctor thinks the problem is very bad, what happens? You stay at the hospital.

cured This year, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. What did her doctor do? Treated her. Gave her medicine.

Why did they do this? To fix the problem.

Last week I got some VERY GOOD NEWS! The medicine worked! She is much better! I would tell my friends. My mother has been _______ of cancer. What is the word? Cured.

What can you be cured of? Diseases.

If you were sick and you went to see a doctor and the doctor fixed your problem. Would you be cured? Yes.

If you broke your arm, is it an emergency? Yes.

Where would you go? Hospital.

What part of the hospital would you go to? Emergency.

In English, we have a short way of calling this place. What is it? E.R.

What does the letter E mean? Emergency.

Today we are at TAFE. We are in a ______? Room.

What does the letter R mean? Room.

What does E.R. Mean? Emergency Room.

What would you go to the E.R. for? Emergencies. Car crash.

broke If I have very little money, am I rich? No.

What am I? Poor.

If I have NO money at all, am I poor? Yes.

If I have NO money at all, I am poor, but I am also something else. What am I? Broke.

If you don't have ANY MONEY, can you go many places? No.

If a your car is BROKEN, can it go many places? No.

In English, we use a word similar to BROKEN to say you have NO MONEY. What is that word? Broke.

Does everyone have enough money to pay for university? No.

In Australia, what can you do if you don't have enough money? Get a loan.

Can students get loans? Yes.

Who can you get a loan from? University.

What are these loans called? Student Loans.

Dialogue Now we are going to listen to a short recording of two people talking together. The female voice will be Faye. The male voice is me, Andrew. They are at university together. Let's listen to what they say. [ play full dialogue ] Dialogue Andy:

Faye, are you ready for the exam today?

Faye:

No, I'm scared!

Andy:

But you don't look scared. You look relaxed.

Faye:

I can not be relaxed. If I was relaxed, I would not be studying so hard!

Andy:

I don't feel ready for the exam either!

Faye:

Why not? You were studying all week. You must be ready.

Andy:

I can't be ready. If I was ready, I wouldn't be so nervous!

Faye:

Oh, I heard your friend Steven was cured of cancer!

Andy:

I don't think so. He was admitted to the E.R. today! He can't be cured. If he was cured, he wouldn't be at the E.R. What about your friend Sally. I heard Sally lost her job and that she is broke.

Faye:

She can't be broke. If she was broke, she wouldn't be on safari.

Andy:

Ah. Did she go on safari to Kenya, in Africa?

Faye:

Yes. Your spot on! She went with Bob and Sam last week.

Andy:

But I saw Bob and Sam today at university. They can't be on safari. If they were on safari, they wouldn't be at university.

Faye:

Ah, I see. I wanted to go on safari with them, but I'm broke!

Andy:

I wanted to go too. Sally thought I was rich and asked me to come. But I'm broke too!

Faye:

We can't be rich. If we were rich, we wouldn't have student loans.

Andy:

Yeah. Well, It is time for the exam to start. We better stop chatting. Good luck!

Faye:

[ draw a box around 'can not' & 'would not' ] “I can not be relaxed! If I was relaxed I would not be studying so hard!” Remember, in English we like to make words shorter. How can we make the words CAN & NOT shorter? can't

How can we make the words WOULD & NOT shorter? wouldn't

[ write shorter sentence on the board ] “I can't be relaxed! If I was relaxed I wouldn't be studying so hard!” Does this sentence mean the same thing as the first sentence? Yes. Exactly the same. It is just a little shorter.

[ indicate pairs ] Please read the dialogue to each other. One of you will be Andrew. One of you will be Faye. When you finish, swap people and read it again to your partner.

CONTROLLED PRACTICE

We are now going to do an exercise to practice using this sentence structure. I'm going to give you each a card. [ give each students a card ] On the front of the card there is a statement. One of you will read this. Then your partner will make a sentence, using this structure, using the prompts on the back of the card. [ indicate example card on projector screen ] FRONT

John is poor, isn't he? BACK

He poor a big house. Use the sentence structure on the board. My partner would say: John is poor, isn't he? (you remember the tag questions from Faye last lesson)

Now we are going to do another exercise. You will work in pairs. [ indicate pairs ] I'm going to give you each a card. [ give each student a card ] [ show powerpoint slide ] On the cards is some FACTS about someone and THEN a statement. For example:

Statement

” John is innocent. ” Facts John is in jail. He was found guilty of robbing a bank!

Read the STATEMTENT to your partner. Your partner will then read the FACTS and tell you why you are wrong. For example: John can't be innocent. If John was innocent, he wouldn't be in jail. Student X and Y. Will you do an example for the class me? [ new example card on projector screen ]

” Sarah is healthy. ”

Facts Sarah is in hospital. She has a bad infection in her lungs.

For example: Sarah can't be healthy. If Sarah was innocent, she wouldn't be in hospital.

What should we say about the weather? This week the weather in Adelaide is quite warm and sunny. But it is not so hot yet.

I don't like the weather when it is above 40 degrees. How can we Tell Tatiana that using the type of sentence we learned. If it was very hot, I wouldn't be happy. I don't like it when its over 40C!

Now I want to tell Tatiana about my students at TAFE. What can I tell her? In my class today I have X students. 3 from ____. 2 from ____ etc.

I now want to tell Tatiana that my students are very smart. How can I do that using our structure? Let me start the sentence for you. My students are very smart. If they weren't smart, they wouldn't be learning so quickly.

Now you are going to write your own email to Tatiana in Russia. You can tell her about anything you like. But please use the sentence structure that we used, at least once. You are going to work in 2 groups. There are two tables setup at the back. [ indicate 2 groups ] Choose the person who will do the writing. The rest of you will give ideas of what you want to say in your email. Remember to use the SENTENCE STRUCTURE we have practiced at least once.
