A national champion and national coach of the year, James Reid enters his 12th season as the head men’s and women’s track coach at Angelo State University where he oversees the shot put, discus, hammer throw, pole vault, long hurdles, as well as the 4x400 relays and assists in the mutli-events. He was selected as head coach in 1999 after six seasons as an assistant coach. The native of Sweeny, Texas, also assisted long-time ASU track coach David Noble as a graduate assistant for two years and a volunteer assistant for four years prior to being named a full-time assistant. Last season, Reid led the Angelo State women’s outdoor track and field team to its first-ever National Championship and guided the Rams to their 26th top-10 National Team finish. Reid was named National and Regional Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year after leading the Belles to their spectacular run and championship finish. On top of leading his Belles squad to a National Championship, Reid also coached the 2011 National and Regional Field Athlete of the Year, Aisha Adams, as well as Celethia Byrd who was named the Regional Track Athlete of the Year. Reid was also instrumental in coaching two wo individual National Champions in Aisha Adams in the heptathlon athlon and Celethia Byrd in the 400m, as well as 4x400 National tional Champion Cham mpion relay team which consisted of Chrystal Ruiz, Andria dria Nussey, Nusseey, Kris Crockett and Celethia Byrd. Reid’s Belles repeated as Lone Star Conference ference Champions, while the Rams were the Runner-upp team in the the LSC. He coached the Belles to 10 Independent Conference Conferencce Championships and one Relay victory, while guiding ding the Rams Rams to a pair of Independent Conference Championships ps and twoo Relay wins. In 2010, Reid’s tutelage paid off as Aisha Adams was waas named the Women’s Conference All-Sport Athlete te of the Year. Yeear. Reid also had the honor of coaching four of his Belles in Aisha Aiisha thia Byrd, as a Adams, Chrystal Ruiz, Andria Nussey and Celethia mpionshipss. well as James Howell, to the USA National Championships. He coached Adams all the way to Germany where ere she helped the USA Team place second in the Thorpe pe Cup. In his first 10 seasons as head coach, Reid has led the Rams track team to five top 10 overall finishes at the NCAA A Division II Outdoor Championships, including a fifth-place effort in 2001. He has been equally successful with the Rambelles, guiding them to a school-best second-place nd-place last spring, their fourth top 10 finish in six seasons. ns. Along the way, he has also coached 10 national champions, including three-time champion throwers wers pion Curry Dawson and Adree Lakey, two-time champion own high jumper Will Littleton, decathletes Lee McCown and Mike Bohensky, heptathletes Amy Bippert elin and Aisha Adams, jumper LaTasha Mosley, javelin thrower Amber Miller and long jumper LaTisha Burns. As first an assistant and then head coach of AA D-II the Rams, Reid has also tutored numerous NCAA All-Americans, including John Nelson (1993) andd J.J. Miller (1997), both national runners-up in the pole le vault.
Miller still holds the ASU pole vault record with a best of 18’ 1/2”. In 2003, two more Rams vaulters, Andy Kendrick and Jeff Ingram, earned All-America honors. Some of Reid’s other notable protégés include four-time All-American high jumper Nathan Gibson, three-time All-American long jumper Darrin Session and All-American Noah Dean, the 2001 national runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles. Rambelle athletes have also benefitted from Reid’s tutelage. Some of his other top women performers include threetime All-Americans Kathy Crowe (discus), Shavon Jackson (long jump, 100m) and Celethia Byrd (100m, 200m, 4x400m relay), two-time All-American Abbie Baiza (400mH), and All-American jumpers Shauna LeGrand (high jump), Tamara Flippin (triple jump), Stacie Cole (long jump, 4x400 relay) and Andria Nussey (long jump). He also coached Amanda Welch to an appearance in the first-ever women’s pole vault competition at the NCAA D-II Championships. One of the highlights of Reid’s coaching career came in 2004, when he led the Rambelles to their first-ever Lone Star Conference championship, snapping the NCAA-record streak of 19 consecutive titles by rival Abilene Christian. For his
efforts, Reid was honored by his coaching peers as the LSC and NCAA D-II South Central Region Women’s Track Coach of the Year. Another high point for Reid came in 2003, when he coached Amber Miller and LaTasha Mosley to appearances at the U.S.A. National Track and Field Championships. They were just the second and third women in school history to ever qualify for the U.S.A. meet, with Miller finishing in the top 10 in the javelin and Mosley finishing in the top 20 in the triple jump. The dynamic duo capped off their storybook ASU careers with a host of awards, including NCAA D-II South Central Region Female Athlete of the Year honors for Miller and LSC Female Track Athlete and Female Athlete of the Year honors for Mosley. In 2005, Reid again garnered LSC Women’s Track Coach of the Year honors as the Rambelles defended their LSC title in San Angelo. Alissa Miller swept five individual events to win the LSC’s David Noble Field Athlete of the Year Award. She also became only the second ‘Belle to be named the NCAA D-II South Central Region Female Athlete of the Year. That year also brought another proud moment for Reid when former ASU national champion Amy Bippert-Bohensky was inducted into the NCAA D-II Track and Field Hall of Fame. In 2008, Reid coached another NCAA D-II South Central Region Female Athlete of the Year in Adree Lakey. Lakey claimed LSC titles in three events and went on to collect three more All-America certificates as well as a national championship in the discus throw. That marked the second straight season that she earned a throwing national title after winning the 2007 NCAA D-II championship in the hammer throw. Following the 2008 season, Reid was once again named the LSC Women’s Track Coach of the Year. In a career full of highlights, last spring may have been the most successful for Reid. Angelo State hosted the NCAA D-II National Outdoor Championships for the fifth time, and the Rams and Rambelles posted 22 All-America performances and two more
national championships. Reid mentored Aisha Adams to the second heptathlon national championship in program history while coaching thrower Adree Lakey to a third career national title, this time in the shot put. He was recognized by his peers as the NCAA D-II National Women’s Track & Field Coach of the Year for 2009. There would also be a host of honors for two of Reid’s prize pupils. Adams was named the NCAA D-II National Female Field Athlete of the Year and qualified for the U.S.A. National Track and Field Championships. With her eighth-place finish at the U.S.A. meet, Adams was chosen to represent the U.S.A. at the Thorpe Cup in Marburg, Germany. Lakey finished her career as the most decorated Rambelle in program history with three national titles and 11 All-America certificates. She was also a finalist for the prestigious 2009 Honda Award, given to the top female student-athlete in NCAA D-II. Ironically, despite coming from an impressive track family, Reid did not start out to become a track coach or even a track athlete. He began his tenure at Angelo State in 1986 as a member of the Rams football team, but his promising career as an offensive lineman was cut short by an illness in his freshman season. Noble invited him to help with the track team and he has been on the track ever since. Reid’s father, Doug, was the head track coach at Sweeny High School, where he led the Bulldogs to a state championship in 1992 and runner-up finishes in 1993 and 2001, before retiring from coaching. His older brother, Will, coaches in Harper after coaching at Kerrville’s Tivy High School and Water Valley High School. Reid received his undergraduate degree from ASU in 1991 and his master’s degree in education in 1993. In addition to his duties as head track coach, Reid is ASU’s assistant athletic director and head coach of the cross country teams. He and his wife, Nina, have three children, Jacob, Kyla and J.D.

NCAA DIVISION II WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
2010 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS You can call them the National Champion Nine. The nine members of the ASU Rambelles track and field team that headed to the NCAA Division II National Track and Field Championships in Charlotte, N.C., returned home with the program’s first national championship trophy. By capturing 50 points in their final six events, the Rambelles ran away with the title, beating second place finisher and defending champion Lincoln University by 14 points, 87-73. And, it was a total team effort. Senior Aisha “Ice” Adams scored points in all six events she entered, including an individual national championship in the heptathlon. Senior Chrystal Ruiz scored points in multiple events, senior Andria Nussey rebounded from a poor showing in the long jump to set a new school record and place second in the 800-meters, and senior Celethia Byrd won an individual national championship in the 400-meter dash and finished third in the 200-meter dash, a result that clinched the title for ASU. “I just said, ‘Thank you Lord,’” Byrd said. “That is all that was running through my mind. I was very happy, and to hear my time was a new personal record, it made me feel good. Most of all, I may not have to run the mile relay. That’s awesome!” Byrd’s points from the 200-meters put the Rambelles ahead by 12 points with only the 4x400-meter (mile) relay left to run. That meant no team could catch them, regardless of what they did in that final race. What they did, though, was put their final stamp on the national meet by winning the relay in a school record 3:38.88 with Byrd on the track running the anchor leg. The result had coaches James Reid, Tom Dibbern and Gary Gabriel yelling, fist-pumping and high-fiving in the stands. “That is unbelievable,” Dibbern said. “When it’s going right, it’s going right.” “This is a great feeling,” he added. “It hurt real bad last year when we lost it, but this has totally erased it. Coaching-wise, I’ve never had a feeling like this. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had coaching. It’s truly worth it.” After confirming that his team had clinched the title, Reid finally calmed down enough to begin the task of texting the great news to just about everyone he knows. “I asked Coach Dibbern about nine times if he was 36 ANGELO STATE TRACK AND FIELD 2011
sure before I called anybody,” Reid said. “I called my wife and told her because they have been following it on the internet. I called my parents and I called Coach (Kathleen) Brasfield, Coach (David) Noble and a bunch of people who have had a lot of influence on me. It’s still a little surreal right now.” “I just can’t say enough about the girls,” he added. “What helped us was nine young ladies busting their butts for three days straight and coming into this year with a goal and wanting to do it. Even over the last three days when we’ve had not such good things happen, they have been resilient, not lost sight of the goal and came up big time after time. I just can’t say enough about them.” Meanwhile, the Rams were also in a battle to achieve their goal of finishing in the top 10 at the national meet. Their day started with junior Tyler Orlando and sophomore Jacob McDonald placing third and seventh in the javelin, gaining eight points for the team and AllAmerica status for themselves. In the discus, junior Wade Goode also garnered All-America status by finishing eighth and earning a point for his team. The 4x100-meter relay team of James Howell, Ryan Adkins, Brian Holik and Nick Smith became All-Americans with a sixth-place finish that picked up
three points. Howell also set a new school record with a 45.95 in the 400-meters that was good enough for third place and six valuable points. The Rams also capped off their national meet in style with a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:06.44, the second-fastest time in school history. That race finally let junior Terence Holland showcase his talents as, due to weather delays, he was forced to wait until the final event of the meet to get on the track. “With all that waiting, something good was bound to happen,” Holland said. “I was ready to go last night in the rain, but had to keep the animal in the cage. This was my one shot and I wanted to make it my best one. Second-fastest time in school history, you can’t get mad about that.” The final race also provided another shot at success for freshman Isidro Garcia, who missed qualifying for the individual 400-meters by mere hundredths of a second. Now, he is also an All-American. “That is a great way to finish off the year,” he said. “I’m glad that we came out and competed to the best of our ability. I went into the race wanting to run a :46, but skipped right past that and ran a :45.7 and that is a big jump for me. Second place in the nation is really something big.” When the dust had settled, the Rams had also achieved their goal as they finished tied for ninth place with 26 points. “I’m proud of our girls,” Garcia said, “and I’m glad they are going to celebrate a national championship. But, top 10 in the nation is also something big for the guys and we are really glad to have gotten that high up.” “I think we are going to get a lot of coverage because we won the championship with the women,” Reid said. “But, I don’t want to take anything away from the men because they had a great meet. There has only been a few times when both men’s and women’s teams have finished in the top 10 at a national meet, and that is something we wanted to do coming in.” “For the guys to do it the way they did it by running that great mile relay was incredible,” he added. “They put it together and made it happen. It’s awesome, totally awesome.”

ACADEMIC HONORS ANGELO STATE TRACK, FIELD AND CROSS COUNTRY ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS Angelo State has a long tradition of excellent track and cross country athletes, who have competed at the NCAA Championships numerous times for the University, earning over 100 All-America certificates in track, field and cross country events. ASU track also has a strong tradition of performing at the top levels in the classroom, as evidenced by the number of GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in track, field and cross country events. In fact, one of the top honors accorded to any athlete is the honor of Academic All-American of the Year, awarded to ASU’s own Amy Bippert in 1997.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN OF THE YEAR AND NCAA SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Heptathlete Amy Bippert capped off her impressive ASU track career with her selection as the GTE/CoSIDA Spring At-Large Team Academic All-American of the Year in 1997. Bippert, the 1997 NCAA Division II heptathlon champion, was picked for the top scholastic honor available to a college athlete from more than 200 female athletes at the NCAA Division II, III and NAIA levels from across the country in six different sports. Bippert also was named an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner that same spring. She was selected from applicants from the NCAA Division II and III levels in seven different sports. The scholarship for $5,000 can be applied to graduate studies at any accredited institution of Bippert’s selection. She is the first person in ASU history to earn either honor. Bippert, a kinesiology major with a 3.78 grade point average, was a nine-time All-American in track during her career at ASU, and led the Rambelles to a sixth-place finish at the 1997 NCAA Division II National Championships, scoring 19 of ASU’s 37 points.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovative athletics conference that aims to provide a superior competitive experience for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of student-athletes through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while developing into one of NCAA Division II’s most successful conferences. The league’s mission is to foster student participation and success among member institutions in D-II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program. The LSC pursues student-athlete development with highest regard to the principles of academic excellence, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, resourcefulness, community service, gender equity, and diversity. Founded on April 25, 1931, the LSC has grown from a five-team conference of Texas-based schools to a 16-member league that spans three states (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico). The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports.
2010 LSC CHAMPIONSHIP The Angelo State women’s team claimed its second straight and fourth conference title in seven years, while Abilene Christian captured its 17th consecutive men’s championship at the 2010 Lone Star Conference Track & Field Championships, held at LeGrand Sports Complex in San Angelo. The Rambelles ended the meet with 297 points, the second-most points in the history of the LSC women’s meet. Aisha Adams won four events for ASU. ACU finished in second with 204 points. On the men’s side, the Wildcats won with 205 points to 195 for the runner-up ASU. It was the closest final standings since ACU’s streak began in 1993. Distance runner Amos Sang, who won four events, sparked the Wildcats by leading a 1-2 ACU finish in the 5,000 meters to break a 185-185 tie in team scoring before the final event.
Throughout the league’s history, various institutions have competed under the LSC banner. Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members having been added in each of the past five decades. Texas A&M-Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, followed by Angelo State in 1968 and Abilene Christian in 1973. Conference membership remained within the Texas borders until 1984 when Eastern New Mexico was admitted. Since then, the LSC has grown to include members from Arkansas and Oklahoma.. The LSC conducts conference championships in 16 sports (eight men and eight women). Men’s championships include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, track and field, tennis and golf. Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, track and field, tennis and golf.

New or recently renovated facilities include Centennial Village, Science III, Houston Harte University Center, Porter Henderson Library, Math-Computer Science Building, Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, Center for Human Performance, Food Service Center and Texan Hall, an award-winning residential complex. The ASU athletic programs are housed in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, one of the premier basketball and volleyball venues in all of NCAA Division II. The Rams and Rambelles compete in the Lone Star Conference. Over the last decade, ASU teams have brought home multiple conference championships as well as the 2010 NCAA D-II National Championship in women’s track and field and the 2004 NCAA D-II National Championship in softball. Rams and Rambelles athletes have earned multiple individual national championships in track and field. Affiliation with Texas Tech has garnered ASU athletic teams added exposure when their scores are announced at Texas Tech during Big XII Conference events. The San Angelo community supports ASU in a variety of ways, including attending Rams and Rambelles sporting events and participating in a variety of university cultural events. The community also offers many complementary activities of its own, including the San Angelo Symphony, a strong community theater, a thriving rodeo, a professional baseball team and recreational opportunities on local lakes, at San Angelo State Park, along the River Walk in the historic downtown district and at five public and private golf courses. In all, Angelo State and San Angelo combine to provide the perfect environment for a broad-based college education in a safe, supportive community with a myriad of opportunities for a great experience both in and out of the classroom.

THE JUNELL CENTER/STEPHENS ARENA One of the most recognizable buildings on the Angelo State University campus, the Junell Center is home to ASU Athletics and Stephens Arena, one of the finest venues in NCAA Division II. The Junell Center/Stephens Arena provides a first-class setting for educational, cultural, social and athletic events. Accommodating audiences up to 6,500, the Stephens Arena is the site for ASU commencement and a variety of entertainment activities for the entire community. As home to ASU’s athletic staffs, the Junell Center offers modern offices, conference rooms and classrooms designed to serve multiple uses. Fans watch the Rams and ’Belles basketball and Rambelles volleyball squads on a gleaming wood court that also serves as a UIL playoff site for area public schools. The fans can catch replays of all the action on the 9x12-foot video screen – the largest of its kind in the Lone Star Conference. Adjacent to the arena floor are the dressing rooms for the Rambelles and Rams athletic teams. These facilities are augmented by a sports medicine center, equipment rooms, storage facilities and a laundry room. Two weight rooms with panoramic windows overlook the LeGrand Sports Complex. A specially-appointed VIP Room is housed in the Junell Center, overlooking the Stephens Arena floor. The VIP Room is the site for ASU Athletic Foundation luncheons as well as dinners, receptions and other programs requiring an extra touch of class. ASU’s Athletic Hall of Honor on the Junell Center’s east concourse heralds the accomplishments of ASU athletes through the ages. Taken together, the many amenities make the Junell Center/ Stephens Arena one of the premier facilities in the state and a crowning jewel for the campus and the community. Distinguished lecture series, cultural programs, exhibitions and concerts are just a few of the community activities that are staged in the facility. An auxiliary gym is also available for smaller programs or as additional space for larger programs requiring its use in conjunction with the arena floor. This space also doubles as a practice site for the Rambelles and Rams and may also be used for classes and dinners. Other support spaces in the building include a warming kitchen for catering needs for banquets and other dining events and a “green room” for performers waiting to go on stage. The Junell Center was funded by the Texas State Legislature with a $30 million dollar package for its construction and for renovation of the existing Houston Harte University Center. The university’s Board of Regents approved the plans for the new center at a cost of $20 million. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held in the summer of 1999, and construction was completed in December of 2001. opportunity for injury. To accomplish those goals we adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Emphasize Olympic-style exercises each workout 2. Develop Strength using traditional methods of training such as bench, squat, deadlift, military, etc. 3. Develop as much power and speed capability as possible 4. Develop as much athleticism as possible 5. Dumbbell and implement training is a priority due to improved balance and stability 6. Free weight training is an area of emphasis 7. Training movements rather than muscle groups is a focus, strength in all planes of motion not just forward 8. Training the core is a priority 9. The education of all athletes on proper diet, rest, and exercise patterns is paramount
48 ANGELO STATE TRACK AND FIELD 2011
We try to improve adherence to the program by evaluating the progress of the players accurately, and providing quantitative feedback to show how we as a team have progressed. Also we attempt to educate the athletes on why the workout it structured as it is and how certain exercises or exercise principles will eventually improve athletic performance.
ATHLETIC TRAINING At Angelo State, the athletic training staff focuses on helping student-athletes reach and maintain their best health, achieve conditioning goals, understand best practices to prevent serious injury and recover fully in a timely manner. Because of this, Angelo State has developed excellent training and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries and insure safe practice and competition habits. However, if injuries do occur, the department is prepared to implement a comprehensive rehabilitation program. At Angelo State, the Certified Athletic Trainers are highly educated and skilled professionals specializing in athletic health care. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the athletic trainers function as integral members of the athletic health care team. ASU’s team consists of three Certified Athletic Trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and a talented student staff of 30-40 student athletic trainers. Certified athletic trainers have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree, usually in athletic training, health, physical education or exercise science. In addition, athletic trainers study human anatomy, human physiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, athletic training, nutrition and psychology/counseling. Certified athletic trainers also participate in extensive clinical affiliations with athletic teams under appropriate supervision. In addition, Certified Athletic Trainers are required to obtain 75 hours worth of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within a three year period to remain in good standing. These CEUs, which are obtained from attending conferences, lectures, presentations assist Certified Athletic Trainers in expanding their knowledge and training in the ever-changing world of medicine and rehabilitative therapy.

ANGELO STATE SPIRIT GROUPS ASU athletic teams enjoy support on the sidelines from some of the best spirit organizations at the collegiate level. The award-winning ASU cheerleaders proudly support the Rams and Rambelles and encourage fans to take part in the pride and pageantry of ASU athletics. Aside from cheering for football, volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, the cheerleaders also work with school administrators in promoting positive school spirit and leadership on campus and throughout the community. The cheerleaders do all this in addition to maintaining their academics. Selection to the squad is competitive, and tryouts are held each spring. The ASU Ram Marching Band is one of the finest units of its kind in the country with numerous awards and national event appearances to its credit. The band performs distinctive and creative halftime shows at each Rams football home game and at selected road games. The band also provides entertainment throughout the games and for other ASU athletic and campus events. The Director of Bands at Angelo State is Daniel McCloud, who joined the music faculty in 2007. The Angelettes, a precision dance ensemble, perform at each ASU football game. Selection to the squad is competitive and tryouts are held each fall. The Angelettes perform synchronized routines with the band for football halftime performances and also perform at other athletic events.

He served as president of the Lone Star Conference Council of Presidents, the governing body of the athletic conference, during 2009-10. The council has final decisionmaking authority over any legislation, policy or activity pertaining to the conference and its member institutions. Previously, Rallo had served the council as first and second vice president.
Since becoming Angelo State’s president, Rallo has been appointed to senior leadership positions on several boards, serving as the secretary/treasurer of the Texas Council of Public University Presidents and Chancellors, on the President’s Committee on International Education-AASCU and on the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). His broad perspective on higher education has given him a great appreciation on the role of athletics in university life. “My experience has been that the competitive nature of athletics translates in a positive way to all aspects of life, on campus and beyond,” said the Staten Island, N.Y., native. “Student athletes tend to have higher GPAs, engage in more community volunteer activities, and serve as positive role models for junior high and high school students.” Dr. Rallo himself could serve as a role model for balancing professional careers in both higher education and the military. His academic career has spanned 29 years at six institutions. His last stop before ASU was at Western Illinois University, where he served four years as provost and academic vice president, plus a stint as interim president. He has served as dean of the College of Business and Administration and the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. As director of the Colorado Institute for Technology Transfer and Implementation, he established the journal Comparative Technology Transfer

From 1992-99, he chaired the executive committee of the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU), a consortia of the 15 public institutions and Shiga Prefecture in Hikone, Japan, with extensive on-site programs focused on language, culture and business. His 27-year military career began in 1981 with a commission in the U.S. Navy. He was cross commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1986 and remained with that branch of service until his retirement as a colonel. He spent seven years on active duty before going into the reserves. His last assignments before retiring in the summer of 2008 were as liaison officer for the U.S. Air Force Academy and as individual mobilization augmentee to the commandant, Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Ala. Dr. Rallo has published extensively on global business topics with an emphasis on the European Union and Japan. He was selected in 1978 as the first American Fellow to the European University Institute, established by the European Union as its primary educational and research institution, and located in Florence, Italy. He has also been named as a Fulbright Scholar and NATO Fellow. He received his B.A. in Russian history in 1971 from Lafayette College; his J.D. in 1976 from Western New England College; and his M.A. in 1978 and Ph.D. in 1980 in international relations from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.

ANGELO STATE ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION
Kathleen Brasfield has been a fixture in the Angelo State Athletic Department and a voice in NCAA Division II athletics nationally, for more than 30 years. Hired in 1978 as head volleyball coach, Brasfield has devoted the majority of her professional career to Angelo State, taking over the role of women’s athletics director in 1982 and overall athletics director in 2004. She retired as volleyball coach prior to the 2005 season to focus on the athletics director role. Assistant Director of Athletics
James Reid became assistant director of athletics during the 2007-08 academic year. In addition to his director’s duties, Reid also serves as head coach of the Rams and Rambelles cross country and track and field programs. In his administrative role, Reid coordinates game and event management, the graduate assistant program, community engagement activities, sports medicine issues or concerns, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In his 11 seasons as the Rams and Rambelles head coach, Reid has led the men’s team to six top 10 finishes and the women’s program to five top 10 finishes at the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Track and Field Championships. His top NCAA finishes include the women’s national championship in 2010 and runner-up title in 2009 and a fifth-place finish for the men in 2001. During his tenure, he has mentored 12 athletes who have gone on to win 16 individual national champion titles, including one relay team title. A native of Sweeny, Reid earned his bachelor’s degree from ASU in 1991 and his master’s degree in education from ASU in 1993. He and his wife, Nina, have three children, Jacob, Kyla and J.D.
As athletics director, Brasfield has seen the ASU programs grow to 13 intercollegiate sports, the most recent additions being baseball in 2005 and women’s golf in 2009. During the 2009-10 academic year, nine of the 12 ASU teams advanced to postseason play, including six teams that made regional or national tournament appearances. Recent highlights under Brasfield’s leadership include the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championship in women’s track and field. The men finished ninth in the national track meet, marking the second consecutive year that both the Rams and Rambelles placed in the top 10 at the NCAA D-II National Track & Field Championships. The Rambelles softball team finished third for the second straight year in the D-II National Championship Tournament after hosting three straight NCAA D-II regional tournaments (2007-09). The 2004 softball squad brought home ASU’s first NCAA National Championship. Under Brasfield, ASU student-athletes have also gotten stronger, literally. In 2008, she approved the hiring of ASU’s first full-time strength and conditioning coach. Off the field, Brasfield has taken the ASU Athletic Department to the next level. She was instrumental in procuring the first-ever endowment solely for Angelo State athletics, thanks to the support of Dr. Robert and Jean Ann LeGrand. The endowment provided for a new scoreboard at the recently renamed LeGrand Sports Complex ,
Director of Athletic Compliance
Christina Whetsel joined the ASU Athletic Department in 2006 as director of compliance and student athlete services. Her title was changed to director of athletic compliance in 2010 to reflect expanded responsibilities. An Angelo State graduate, Whetsel was an allconference performer for the Rambelle soccer team during the early years of the program from 1995-99. She then served as a graduate assistant coach. Whetsel still ranks among ASU’s career leaders in several statistical categories and still holds the single-game and single-season assists records for the Rambelles. A native of Austin, Christina and her husband, Daniel, reside in San Angelo.
formerly known as the ASU Multipurpose Sports Complex, and improvements to the track facility prior to the NCAA D-II National Championships in 2009 when ASU hosted the meet for the fifth time in school history. Also active on the national scene, Brasfield serves on the NCAA D-II Management Council and served as chair of the council for the 2010 calendar year. She previously served several stints on the NCAA D-II Volleyball Regional Advisory Committee and spent four seasons on the NCAA D-II Volleyball National Advisory Committee, acting as national chair in 2004. She has been equally active in the Lone Star Conference. In her 26 years as ASU head volleyball coach, Brasfield led the Rambelles to 647 wins. She was named the LSC Coach of the Year a league-record eight times and retired as one of the top five winningest active coaches in NCAA D-II. She also led the Rambelles to seven league titles, including four consecutive LSC crowns from 198285. Fittingly, several additional awards have come Brasfield’s way over the years. She was honored as a member of the LSC’s All-75 Year Team in 2007 as a volleyball coach and earned the NAGWA Pathfinder Award for her contributions to the achievement of women in sports. A native of Abilene, Brasfield received her bachelor’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 1969 and her master’s degree from ASU in 1980.
