Wildcats Look to Add to Impressive Body of Work Kansas State head coach Tim Norris won’t be using this weekend’s Big 12 Championship as the final measurement for his team’s success this season, opting rather to focus on the body of work done thus far. However, that doesn’t keep 11th-year skipper from getting excited about tacking on more achievements to one of the greatest seasons in K-State history. “I talked to the team about the chance that we have to add to one of the best seasons for Kansas State golf, as far as the consistency of play and the consistent high finishes, the individual performances go,” Norris said. “We have a chance to add to all that at the conference tournament. (There’s no) better place to put the finishing touches on the best season that I’ve been here for.” The Wildcats roll into Friday’s opening rounds at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, on the heels of three consecutive top-five finishes, having tied the K-State single season mark at eight. K-State is confident that its current school-record scoring average – 293.36 strokes per round – numerous new individual marks, and its first tournament win since 2003 will translate into success during the three-day, 72-hole event. “It’s one thing for the coach to be optimistic because that’s his job, but when the player’s are optimistic then you’ve got a chance,” Norris said. “I think our players are optimistic, they’re positive and upbeat. From a confidence standpoint, it’s not me telling them they can do it, it’s them knowing they can do it. There’s a Grand Canyon between both sides of that fence.” ...notes continued on next page

K-STATE HEAD COACH TIM NORRIS Tim Norris enters his 11th season as the head men's golf coach at Kansas State. Norris has brought an extensive knowledge of the game and a tremendous work ethic to the program, each of which have been derived from over 18 years of coaching experience and nine years on the PGA Tour. When Norris took over the K-State program, the Wildcats had only received one NCAA Regional berth. Heading into 2007-08, Norris has guided the Cats to NCAA Regional berths in four of the last five years and five berths overall.

The Wildcats seemingly have a tall task, teeing off against three top-30 ranked opponents, being seeded as the eighth-best team according to the league coaches, and having never placed higher than fourth place at the 2004 Big 12 Championship on an in-state golf course. Norris thinks his team can handle it. “It’s going to be an endurance test with 36 holes on Friday and 18 on Saturday and Sunday and I would say pacing yourself mentally and emotionally is going to be the biggest thing – we can do that,” Norris said. “I really feel like this year we have a chance to eclipse our best finish if we play well. There have been years before that if we played well, the top half would have been good. From a potential standpoint, from a confidence standpoint, I think this group has a chance to do as well as any other team.” The Wildcats will send a young, but talented group of players to Texas, led by sophomores Mitch Gregson and Joe Ida. The duo have teetered back-and-forth atop K-State’s scoring lineup all season and are separated by just seven strokes through 33 rounds of competition. Gregson’s 72.64 scoring average leads the Wildcats and is the second-best single-season average in school history. Ida posted two rounds of 65 this season and his 72.85 scoring average is also among the all-time bests at K-State. Throw in the old man of the group, junior Robert Streb, and the trio combines for 67 percent of K-State’s total rounds counted for scoring, having played in every round during the regular season. “A big part of it is that their games are very sound, so it doesn’t matter where we go,” Norris said of his three anchors. “If we play on a really, really tough golf course in bad conditions, or if we play on an easy golf course in perfect conditions, they’re going to be able to perform. So far, we really haven’t been to a place where they haven’t been able to play well and be consistent. I don’t think that Whispering Pines is going to present any huge challenges to them.” Kansas State will also look for contributions from two freshmen, Kyle Smell and Daniel Wood, who played their way into the starting rotation with a pair of strong pushes in the final tournaments of the spring. Wood made every trip for the Wildcats during the spring campaign after making just two appearances in the fall. Wood’s highlight came at the Ron Moore Invitational where he carded a season-low 67 and 2-under 214 while competing as an individual. Smell, who played extensively in the fall but was used sparingly in the spring, earned his spot with a top-10 finish at the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate to end the regular season. Kansas State tees off the first tee at 8:50 a.m. on Friday and is paired with seventh-seed Oklahoma and ninth-seed Iowa State. The Wildcats will play 36 holes Friday, and 18 holes each on Saturday and Sunday with tee times and tee locations to be determined by the previous day’s results. The winner of the Big 12 Championship receives an automatic bid into postseason play.

K-State’s Projected Lineup 1 - Mitchell Gregson - So. - 72.64 - Currently has the 2nd-best scoring avg. in school history 2 - Joe Ida - So. - 72.85 - Impressive sophomore campaign includes a pair of 65s 3 - Daniel Wood - Fr. - 74.95 - Making sixth consecutive trip with the Wildcats 4 - Kyle Smell - Fr. - 75.19 - Strong finish to spring campaign vaulted freshman into lineup 5 - Robert Streb - Jr. - 74.33 - Someone had to be five, but Streb at his best is No. 1

A Glance at the Field After trading strokes with seven Big 12 teams during the regular season, the K-State Wildcats will encounter the entire conference at the Big 12 Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club. The Wildcats went 10-4 against Big 12 Conference foes during the 2007-08 season, including a 10-2 mark against the North Division and 0-2 mark against the South Division. The Big 12 Conference boasts four teams inside the top 50 - (5) Oklahoma State, (16) Texas A&M, (27) Texas Tech, and (38) Texas - according to Golfweek’s latest poll, with four others - (60) Colorado, (65) Baylor, (66) Kansas State, (67) Oklahoma - on the fringe. Oklahoma State’s lineup features the top individual in collegiate golf, freshman Rickie Fowler, and No. 39 Trent Leon. The Cowboy duo are two of four Big 12 golfers in the top 50, joined by Texas’ Charlie Holland (35) and Texas A&M’s Ignacio Elvira (49).

Whispering Pines Golf Club K-State head coach Tim Norris took the Wildcats to Whispering Pines for the 2004 Big 12 Championship where the team finished 10th. Norris thinks his team will have a better time on the course this go around likes the par-72, 7,249 course that was opened in 2000. “It’s tree-lined golf course,” Norris said. “We’ll be playing on Bermuda grass and the course will be in great shape. They say that the greens will be fast for that type of grass. Our job is to go down there and prepare the best we can and just play the golf course. I don’t think it’s going to favor anyone other than the guys who are playing the best golf and can handle whatever is thrown at them.

Last Time Out Kansas State shot the lowest score in the final round and tied a school-record for most topfive finishes in a season with a second place finish at the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate on April 8. K-State carded a 295 in the final round, shooting 298-293-295—886 (+22) for the tournament, and moved from fifth place to second place over the final 18 holes at The Club at Old Hawthorne. The Wildcats notched their eighth top-five finish and tied the singleseason mark held by the 2003-04 team. Mitchell Gregson paced the Wildcats throughout the tournament and led the team with an even-par 72 on the final day. Gregson finished third overall with a 1-over 217 and notched a team-leading fifth top-10 finish. Freshmen Kyle Smell and Daniel Wood joined Gregson in the top-10. Wood finished eighth with a 74-73-74—221 (+5) and Smell tied for ninth with a 76-73-73—222 (+6). It was the second top-10 finish of the season for both golfers.

Making History This year’s K-State team has already poked numerous holes in the K-State record books while recording individual and team lows but they might only be getting started. The Wildcats are on pace to break the school scoring mark, averaging just 293.36 strokes per round through 11 events. The 2003-04 K-State team owns the current low annual average at 294.73. Kansas State is one top-5 finish away from breaking that same squad’s school record for top-5 finishes in a season. This year’s team and the 03-04 team have eight top-5 finishes. Individually, K-State’s Mitch Gregson (72.64) and Joe Ida (72.85) are currently in the top-5 for season stroke average.

.500 Rule Shenanigans With their .724 winning percentage and 113-41-2 win-loss record, the Wildcats are well above the .500 mark. A new rule for 2007-08 mandates that teams must have better than a .500 record to be eligible for postseason play. Seven teams currently ranked ahead of the Wildcats in the latest Golfweek Poll are below .500 and could be sitting out the postseason if they don’t win their conference tournaments. No. 32 NC State is 61-66 overall and the highest-ranked team under .500.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Kansas State golf team entered Tuesday’s final round at the Kansas Invitational five strokes behind host Kansas and in position to take the title but both schools carded rounds over 300 and slipped off the top of the leader board at Alvamar Golf Club. The Wildcats, who gained one stroke on the Jayhawks in the third round, fell from second place to fourth behind Houston, Oral Roberts and Kansas, after turning in a team score of 298297-303—898 (+34). The Wildcats finished 10 strokes behind tournament winner Houston. Kansas State notched the fourth most birdies of any team in the competition with 34 and averaged 4.82 strokes on par-5 holes but shot 43-over par on par 4 holes. Kyle Yonke had the best score of the day for the Wildcats and matched his opening round 75 to finish the event with a 7577-75—227 (+11). Spencer Alefs, Joe Ida and Mitchell Gregson all closed play with a 4-over par 76, and Robert Streb turned in a 75-74-78—227 (+11). Gregson’s 16th-place finish was the highest for Wildcats contributing to the team score. K-State freshman Kyle Smell, who competed as an individual, concluded his impressive collegiate debut tied for eighth place with a 5over 221.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - For the second consecutive day, Mitch Gregson and Robert Streb shot the same low score for the Wildcats and led Kansas State to a second place finish at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate. Gregson and Streb finished with an even-72 on Tuesday at Colbert Hills Golf Course where the Wildcats finished behind Miami (Ohio). The K-State pair matched rounds the entire tournament, recording a 75-71-72— 218 (+2), and finished tied for fourth overall. As a team, the Wildcats shot 299-292-296—887 (+11) and finished 12 strokes behind the Redhawks and 11 strokes ahead of Marquette. Gregson and Streb were paired with the Redhawks’ Michael Drobnick and Ben Wood for the final round on Tuesday and pushed the duo before settling in at fourth at the end of the day. Gregson opened play with a strong front nine that included a birdie on the par-4 third hole. Hitting from over 150 yards, Gregson’s second shot landed inside five feet of the cup and the sophomore from Waterloo, Ill., knocked it in. Gregson led Wood by one at the turn but two birdies on the back nine were erased by two bogeys – including one on the final hole. Wood birdied twice on the back while finishing with a 1-under 71 and a 7274-71—217 (+1) tie for second place.

RENO, Nev. - Kansas State fell out of contention at the Wolf Pack Classic on day two, while tying a season high for strokes in a round with 303. The Wildcats slipped from third place to ninth in the final round of play at Wolf Run Golf Club. K-State’s Kyle Smell and Robert Streb carded the low scores for the Wildcats with a pair of 2-over 74’s. Smell finished second on the team behind Mitchell Gregson for the tournament with a 75-70-74—219 (+3) and finished in a tie for 27th. Streb was K-State’s third lowest scorer with a 75-72-74—221 (+5..Gregson, who fired back-to-back rounds under par to open the competition on Monday shot a 5-over 77 on Tuesday. He still finished with the Wildcats lowest tournament total at 70-71-77— 218 (+2), but failed to crack the top-20 for the first time this season as he finished tied for 22nd. Joe Ida added the fourth counting score for K-State with a 78. The sophomore from Fort Scott, Kan., finished tied for 42nd after shooting a 73-72-78—223 (+7). Freshman Daniel Wood concluded his collegiate team debut with a 76-7583—234 (+18).

SOMIS, Calif. - Three of five K-State golfers improved on their scores from Monday and helped the Wildcats turn in their best round of the Club Glove Intercollegiate on the final day of competition at Somis Country Club on Tuesday. Joe Ida, Mitchell Gregson and Robert Streb all found a way to drop strokes from their scores in the third round and along with Kyle Smell, gave Kansas State a final round 308, a 16stroke improvement from the first 18 holes on Monday. The Wildcats final tally of 320-316-308—944 (+80) was good enough for 7th place out of the 12 team field. Strong Santa Ana winds and smoke from nearby wildfires continued to torment golfers. Tournament-host Pepperdine turned in the first sub-300 round on Tuesday and won the event with a 300-306299—905 (+41). Ida paced the Wildcats throughout the tournament and finished tied for 15th with a 7979-75—233 (+17), one stroke better than Gregson, who finished tied for 17th with his 79-79-76—234 (+18). Streb finished 27-over after shooting 81-83-79—243. Kyle Smell tallied the best round of the tournament for the Wildcats with a 76 in the second late Monday, and finished tied for 27th with his 84-76-78—238 (+22).

STOCKTON, Calif. - A school-record team score and six-stroke lead wasn’t enough to hold off a charge from the top-ranked team in the country as Kansas State finished in second place at the Pacific Invitational on Wednesday. The Wildcats continued their assault on the team record book by notching the lowest 54-hole score in school history but K-State was unable to hold off No. 1-ranked Charlotte on the final three holes. Charlotte took the tournament title at Brookside Country Club and continued its unbeaten run through the fall with a score of 278-275-271—824 (-40). KState finished two strokes back at 273-274-279—826 (-38). K-State tallied two top-5 rounds in school history in the opening rounds and Joe Ida scored the lowest round ever by a Wildcat on a par-72 on Tuesday, helping the Wildcats beat the team 54-hole low score of 830 set at the 2003 Purina Classic. The Wildcats went head-to-head with Charlotte on Wednesday and had a two stroke lead with two golfers yet to finish. Charlotte’s Stefan Wiedergruen birdied the last three holes and Ida bogeyed just his second hole of the entire tournament and the 49ers won the tournament.

BEAUMONT, Calif. - Mitchell Gregson shot an 8-over 224 for the third top-10 finish of his sophomore campaign and the Kansas State Wildcats finished the Braveheart Classic in fifth place on Tuesday. K-State carded the secondlowest team score in the second round at Oak Valley Golf Club after resuming the final three holes from suspended play on Monday, but closed with a 307 (+19) over the final 18 and finished the tournament 18 strokes behind Cal Poly, 311-301-288—900 (+36). FRESNO, Calif. - Despite Mitchell Gregson’s round of 69, the Kansas State men’s golf team couldn’t make up ground Tuesday at the Fresno Lexus Classic and finished in a tie for 13th at 8-over par 872. The Wildcats fired a 6over par 294 at the Fort Washington Country Club Golf Course and were just five strokes out of a top-10 finish, but they were unable to keep up the momentum from Monday’s second round score of 283. San Diego State used a steady day of 1-over par golf to hang on to its lead and top Texas and California for the tournament win. San Diego State’s Matt Hoffenberg and Texas’ Charlie Holland tied for first individually at 9-under par 207. Texas had three of the top five individuals at the tournament. oe Ida was the top Wildcat finisher in the tournament after tying for 20th at 2-under par 214. Gregson was the only Wildcat Tuesday to drop below 70, firing a 3-under par 69 to place in a tie for 31st. Gregson finished the tournament at even-par 216.
