Narrative / Final Yeat Project
Project Issues "FIFTH REGION" is an extreme fairy tale about Hong Kong future in 2060. During the project, I concerned about contemporary issues that are overpopulation, land shortage, and new town planning in Hong Kong. Based on these, I created an imaginative story to predict the future.
Narrative In the past 80 years, pedestrian systems created a multilevel urbanisms that continued to expand, its led to heavy air pollution. There is no sunlight, the ground level becomes the most darkest, smelly and orderless places. Hong Kong is headed down a blind alley. To tackle these problems, a new mega-structure is built, which is a mid-air network, it is created at above 200 meters from the earth’s ground, which called ” FIFTH REGION ”. "FIFTH REGION" was to become the last new region of Hong Kong following the Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and the Outlying Islands.
The 8 Drawings For these 8 chapters, there are different scenarios , which’s not in a same day or same year but in a different period of a newly structure from scratch, like a process. Also, for the each chapters are included a lot of tiny events and situations in that place . Chapters 1 is the introduction of the story; Chapter 2-4 are the following-up, which demonstrated some particular event or situation if we living in the sky, such as the Wealth Disparity, pollution problems and the safety problem if there is a disaster here. Chapter 5 is the transition, which shows that the initial function or ideas through a Macro-scales . Chapter 6 is the changing part, the people living inside a few years already, and they are starting to long for the nature environment. Chapter 7-8 are the part of conclusion, which shown that all of the challenges and problems would be solved and the change of the human behaviour would be estimated. 7

conceptual project
Type of the project / ideas This is a narrative project, I tried to set the background of a story at the beginning of this project, I would be referring the current situation of the community to estimate the appearance of Hong Kong cities after 2060, take advantage of three-dimensional space to form a network in the cloud to become the main link for Hong Kong citizens. Based on the above idea to combine in a new appropriate manner, allow us to reorder, revitalize, update the city and redefine the life-pattern for the public.
Scale of the project / ideas My project mainly works on two scales, the first one would be show the megastructure of the entire region from the bottom up in a macroscopic way. The other will zoom in to record the human activities when they are living in this micro-city.
Site or Sites / ideas This is the concept of a future city, which is suitable for the use of every saturated and lack of land cities. After 2060, the last new town – East Lantau Metropolis become saturated, where will be piloted, then spread out to another district. Another reason, East Lantau Metropolis is in the central area of Hong Kong, surrounded by the New Territories, Kowloon, Hong Kong Island and Islands, the new strategic transport corridors are used to connect the various regions to form one metropolitan business core.
9
conceptual project
The early way of working / ideas In order to construct framework of the story, I would study into different directions or topics to support my project. Firstly, I will analyse the elements and conditions of the existing new towns in Hong Kong. Use Diagram to show the proportion of the core values in these cities to understand what programs are included in the new region. In addition, I will analyse the various vulnerabilities in existing new towns from the above analysis. Then, the population growth and land use after 2060 will be calculated, which will help increase the persuasiveness of the whole story-telling and become an important reason for constructing a new city. Understand the behaviour of the citizens is an important issue. I would like to observing the human life-pattern in some dense space in Hong Kong. In addition, circulation diagram will be used to visualize the various secret pathway of citizens in the existing micro-cities. This labyrinthine space reflected the complexity and diversity of urban life. Part of design, I will boldly try to create a new megastructure with extensions in different structures. The process of shaping the form helps me understand the value between the space and citizens, which should be full of passion and possibilities for the future. The ultimate goal is to enable citizens living in this vertical city to take advantage of the new network, and also truly make use to the three-dimensional space and escape the old concept of life. With regard to the final product, I will do a story-telling via axonometric drawings and make several vertical paintings of about 2 meters to show the whole Vertical region in a macroscopic way, and the tiny proportion allows viewers to use a magnifying glass to observe the various human activity to understand the relationship between citizens and the city, this is pay respect to “Along the River During the Qingming Festival. In addition, I will make a whole series of axonometric drawings to explain the details in the story even try to make animations to show the movement of the citizens.

Understand the thinking of planning cities / research & study Principle of urban structure by Nikos A. Salingaros How organized complexity is achieved in a city is examined. Not enough complexity, and a city is dead; if it has complexity without sufficient organization, a city becomes chaotic and unlivable. Raising the degree of organized complexity appears as one of mankind's fundamental drives throughout the ages.
About placing of the nodes and the connections
look "regular"; but this regularity forbids anything more than minimal connections.
Multiple connectivity between the same four nodes
Such connections exceed the carrying capacity of the channels.
The same nodes distributed with connections that work much better.

The Hong Kong Skyline is continuously changing, new buildings popping up all the time, which concentrated in a tiny space and ongoing reclamation efforts keep expanding the skyline by vertical. 1300 meters (x2.7) The pedestrian path in Hong Kong began to be evolution after 1980s, as the MTR system expanded rapidly and the mid-levels escalator was completed in 1993 and helped open up new areas in Central. The Multilevel Pedestrian Networks in Hong Kong was widely adopted, which has floating threedimensional circuits that connect transit stations, shopping malls, office towers, and parks. Hong Kong become a Multilevel Metropolis after 1980's , the development of the pathway is no longer limited to be a 2D plane, but begins to extend up and down in a vertical manner. Circulation has become more complicated, and the public can contact each other through new network, even replace the connection with the ground in the future and truly make use to open up new areas with threedimensional.

Chapter I 2060, government decided to abandon the existing saturated land to develop a new town plan. Due the redevelopment project runs out a large number of government public funds, all renew plans are completely stopped. After than, the existing infrastructure have been long abandoned, collapsing buildings and roads are no longer being repaired. The citizen can not stand it anymore, who needs to escape the earth ground to take other places in the clouds. Mr.Messiah leads a group of hongkonger to leave this place. Other citizen began to imitate of him, because there is no turning back possible and its the only choice. The HKSAR Government was acquiesced, this may be a new way out.

Chapter II Abandoned reconstruction project - Causeway Bay, disintegrating buildings seems to be a ghostly town, it became the testing point. There are a large number of buildings to be rebuilt, and the crane at the top of the building, which becomes the basis for the mega-structures. It is dangerous that the citizens kept climbing up the crane by unarmed. Some people falling down from high, some feel too tired and give up. Perhaps it’s out of desperation. For safety and efficiency, Mr. Messiah allows the citizens to ride on the spreader and together with the resource on the earth hang up to new platform. After 2060, a series of large-scale riots erupted in Hong Kong, causing social instability. A million middle class, wealthy citizens and environmentalist who starting to be demonstrations and processions on the narrow streets of Hong Kong. They are against the poor who were leaving and they are not willing to give up their existing assets. After all, each of them bought at least a million Hong Kong dollars in property. What a pity ! Everything went up in smoke.

Chapter III There are advantages and disadvantages of living in a mid-air network. If we live in the sky, the resident would not come across annoying bugs, like mosquitoes or flies. Also, they can see a breathtakingly beautiful sunrise and sunset without disturbed by other buildings if you live in the high area. We located on above 200 meters, the typhoon and the harshness of the weather are the biggest enemy of the platform. During monsoon it can be very violent at this altitude. The structure is stable and safe, but the typhoon will bring the whole structure strong shakes. There is a storm brewing. Before the storm, some people chose to take sleeping pills to spend the whole night, some people chose to go to the platform to feel it, some people prepared for the protection of agricultural crops on the platform, some people tie the sturcture to the surrounding buildings with ropes, in order to make it more stable. Tonight, where will you go?

Chapter IV In the summer of a certain year, one of the most important historical events took place - B5 Fire. There was a sudden fire in the B5 area of the Market Level. The flames quickly spread out of control due to drought conditions and increasing winds, combining into one large conflagration which burned for several days. " Here is our place, here is our dream ! " The citizens began to join the rescue operation, in order to save their dreams, their home. Some peoples are on the roof top of B6 for rescue through the pool water. Some peoples are going to Jump exit, some peoples are going down via the slide. The fire becomes the greatest test of this region.

Chapter V After a few years, all of Hong Kong citizens are abandoned to live on the earth’s ground, a new region is born. The new mega-structure built on both sides of Victoria Harbour, which is a vertical mid-air network. Above 200 meters from the earth’s ground, which area defined as " Fifth Region " " Fifth Region " is integrated diversity, autonomic, self-organized, complexity and sharing which created a vertical neighborhood that embraces and encourages citizen interaction. The concept of three-dimensional living space like an infinite space for Hong Kong citizen. It broke the previous building standards and laws totally.
25
conceptual project
Chapter VI The citizen already missing the earth’s of landscapes and ecologies, but they no longer willing to go back to the earth ground. Mr.Messiah proposed a wonderland plan. The program creates an artificial landscape as a natural won-derland, nearby the human settlement. It’s all artificial, but all the landscapes are very close to reality where inculded air flows, river runs, forest grows, animal lives freely. It is the era that the nature environment no longer exists in the natural state.
26

Chapter VII When the altitude is higher, the weather gets colder. The highest platform is at an altitude of over 5000 meters, it has experienced a subtle changes of the climate. High-altitude platforms are no longer affected by the monsoon, but there are no clouds, which results in an extremely weather. In order to achieve a balance of humidity, the main water source needs to be supplied from a low-altitude platforms ,and the " Humidity Control Device " needs to be operated all the time. Finally, Hong Kong will have snowing when the humidity reaches a certain level. Low-altitude platforms had a big problem during the hot and humid weather and polluted environment. The multilevel urbanisms of the " FIFTH REGION " is to keep expanding, it deteriorated the problem of " Urban heat island effect ". The temperature sometimes is as high as 50 degree centigrade. To tackle these problems, Mr.Messiah decided that the low-altitude area converted into an artificial canyon, it became an important tourist attraction. You can be experienced the changes in spring, summer, autumn and winter in the vertical region.

Chapter VIII We grew up in this mid-air network and living in harmony with " nature " The citizens are getting used to living at higher altitudes. who have not experienced the great migrations and was born in here are defined as " Newcomers " They were born in this region. The newcomers have never touched the earth ground, the horizontal line is under their feet and the Lion Rock is always seen from the angle of view. Newcomers have a richer imaginations of spatial, after all, they can touch the sky and feel the depth of the space more easily. Newcomers have a unusual personality of the earth's than the normal person. Such as the children there had very unique act when they are playing the games, who no longer play the ball on the ground anymore. Also, the newcomers like to crawl more than walk.

The Possibilities of Scissor Staircase
Mutations Scissor Staircase is a typical kind and first built in Hong Kong, mainly serving in private residential housing. The features and characteristics are further examined.
3 principles are listed for satisfying a scissor staircase, as it shared common platforms, two staircase located at same space, yet two staircase never connect each other.
50
conceptual project
In rotating, flipping, and reflecting a form can it comes into new inspirations. In this formation we thought of a scissor staircase being an individu-al architecture. An example by Bahay Kobo is similar used.
We would like to create a newly designed staircase supporting a structure, it is developing by relying on extra structures like water tank tower and fire tower, some relatively similar patterns and structure usage.
A repetitive pattern in main point of scissor staircase, we find out the playful part of circulation. From some sketches and modelling, we developed a repeat loop and one way circulation.

Self-Supporting Study / Cross Section
Regarding the two staircases holding on to each other, we examined that one staircase can’t hold up but the force comes when four staircase rely on each other, they share the force and becomes an individual self-sup-porting infrastructure. .
Other than the intersection point, landing to ground is another essential element to hold up the stair. For it is the foundation and base of force to support the whole structure not falling apart and holding still.
Second is the stabilization holding to the ground, screws, steel plates and L steel support panel will be the main connection. 52
A isometric side view is seen from the final model, 1:20. Real material for perforated steel plate and U channels are expressed. Appropriate amount of screws and reinforcement bars are applied to support the structure. In short, by the examined supporting ideas can proof it self-standing. 53
There are two supporting elements on landing area. First is the reinforcement bar supporting the folding of perforated steel plate as it is the base and force endured point.
A close look of the cross section intersect point, in order to guarantee the two u steel channel won’t move up and down, two reinforcing screws are constructed to hold the points.
Details are shown in scale 1:5. Expression of handrails holding up and the landing with L steel supporting bar. 54

As a result, a lot of people have to bear huge pressure and living so intensively in their life every day. In addition, I discovered that the people did not have a well self-conversation chance to figure out a clarity vision to face the tough time of life. We have to understand that our life is not someone else but it’s our own. Therefore, we should have a break after work and get away from the distraction then searching for what we need truly from the bottom of heart. Convenience for Workers The white-collar workers work has accounted for most of the time, there is no time to go out. If the location is remote. They would go home and rest rather than spend extra time to come here, so the choice of the site must be convenient with white-collar.
Significance of Building Building site choice is able to have historical value, as well as white-collar workers have the relevant meaning, can resonate of them.

Find the Problem
Lack of Visitors Flowrate
For example in Hong Kong, K11 and Langham Place Shopping Mall are located at Hong Kong famous district. K11 is in Tsim Sha Tsui and Langham Place is in Mong Kok. Both are in the same district and both are the travelers area. Beside both are above the MTRstation. But why Langham Place Shopping Mall can be more famous than K11, more people willing to spend their time over there ?
Area of Limitation
The public area are not enough for visitors. To measure the size of a shopping mall, there are small, medium and large. In Hong Kong, six hundred thousand square feet(60000 sq ft) is the size of a medium shopping mall. Because of the limit of area to hold exhibition, there are few big exhibitions can hold at K11. Young artists and designers can not hold some powerful and large scale exhibitions.
Lack of Gimmick
Some of designers/artists have a less reputation, therefore it decrease the reaction and attraction of people. K11 do not have many special brands that can attract customers come and spend money, that makes K11 are not popular 83
>60SQ.FT = LARGE MALL

practical project
Design Potentials The Happiness index of Hong Kong started a decrease, before is The 72th but now is 75th, it is only higher than Somali. The statistics show many thing, we can see that pay attention at the importance of mental health and humanities are trend.
Aim / Aim on Humanities, because our activities related to humanities / Improve the relationship of the society, help people love each other, improve sustainable development.
Economic
/ A clear theme can attract people come to K11 / Raise K11 news value, attract media to interview / euphoria will increase the shopping intended
Branding
/ Raise the level of economic value, excitation on the visit and shopping / Consolidation on the core of humanities of K11, increase the branding value / Provide a dierent shopping experience
Society
/ Increase the interaction of people / help K11 produce a distinctive atmosphere / pay attention on public pressure / more interesting and fun for public
84
practical project
Design Direction There are a lot of people will come to K11. They are interesting to stop for a while and watch the art. But how do they feel? Are they ready? We believe in different moods to appreciate the arts, there will be a different understanding. People, Art, Nature are core-value of K11 . At the same time, K11 play an important role of entertainment on our society, which is connected with the whole community relations, and promote sustainable development. Therefore, we will go to the development of the humanities, at the same time to consolidate the "people" of the core values.
Design Concept I factored in things other than shopping and commodities that the consumers of k11 might wish to take away, such as a beautiful moment that moved them. I believes that such fond memories will add value to the customers’ shopping experience. This spatial design is named “ Rays of Happiness ” to encourage people to always wear their smiles and share their joy with others. The space was divided into 2 main parts: Art installation zone and Interactive special zone. Both zones were presented in the thematic elements of radiation and reflective lines, and also the gradient colour tone, alluding to the infinite rays of energy that spreads everywhere. The idea is to have not only visual effects, but also the message behind to add positive energy into the space.

Design Concept Due to Rocco Yim love challenge to blends dierent environments in his design. So I would mix the natural world through design approaches so sympathetic and well integrated with its architecture. So I think glass using is good idea to show this texture. Moreover, I would be trying to blends some feeling in this theme of design which is relax, rational and openness
Element Using About the element of idea, my inspiration comes from the Salt pan. Salt pan has a lot of basic shapes palettes which also have a strong vertical and horizontal lines. Also according the texture of Salt pan, it has a lot of reflective or blur reflective eect. Rocco Yim and his wife are rational. Also, strong vertical and horizontal lines express rational feel. .
From Deveploment Sketches When the idea is coming, quick sketches is a good idea to record the thinking.
