Inherited Shoes a testament of style

introduction

My grandmother, Athena, had impeccable taste in shoes. When she found the right pair, she didn’t just buy them, she bought that style in every color. And, if available, in suede. My father refers to her shopping habit as a problem or addiction. But, I know the truth. You can’t put a price on class. And Athena always got a deal. The proof is directly to the right.

Athena passed away in November of 2010, but I like to think of this book as a testament of her taste and style. She taught me many things in life, like how to seek out a well-crafted sling-back. The trick is that the elastic sits inside the actual form of the shoe to create a more comfortable fit. She had personal shoppers at most of the large retail stores in the Metro Detroit area. Her favorite place was—the now closed—Jacobson’s. There is proof. The receipts, like the one on the left, lie in shoe boxes that fill my closet. That’s right, Athena took care of her shoes. She stored the majority of them in their original boxes with the receipts.

My closet now holds the 36 pairs of shoes from Athena. My two sisters each have ten or so pairs and my cousin has closer to twenty. The photos in this book only show a fraction of the entire collection. * These photos were taken inside Athena’s closet by myself.
