After a good reception of the first online issue i felt it was time to take Catfight one step further and have it printed. We are still struggling to pursue this idea. ... Freedom of Speech Interview with Åsa Sonjasdotter Text and images: Sizter & Ame Åsa Sonjasdotter is a 39 year old female artist, born and raised in Lund in the south of Sweden. She first worked as a journalist, but then changed to art and took a formal education at art academies in both Norway and Denmark. Åsa was invited to participate in an exhibition together with three other artists at the Hall of Art in Lund. The title of the exhibition was “Offentlig handling”. In Swedish “offentlig” means “public” and “handling” means both a legal document that everyone is entitled to read, and to take an active decision. Her part of the exhibition was making a temporary wall, on which all the citizens of Lund would be able to express their opinions, thoughts and drawings.

On the back of the wall, you see extracts from different law texts, like the freedom of speech and the freedom of expression, but also from the criminal act. And here you can see an opposition. In Sweden we often talk about the freedom of expression, but in reality not everyone is entitled to use this right, because then you may get prosecuted. ‘In the lawtexts you can read a lot about the right to express yourself, but in reality only the ones who can afford to pay for the place have the possibility to express themselves in the public space.’ The wall is situated right in front of the town hall where you find all the political power of Lund. The idea was that it would stand there for three weeks, and then be disassembled. During the first week a debate was arranged to discuss these questions and it was clearly that the question needed to be discussed.

Why was this so important for Åsa then? Å: It deals with many different questions, like the fact that our society is overregulated. Through the overregulation, you kill the possibility of letting things grow for themselves. For me, it’s important to questionize who has the right to the public space. At the moment the public space is being sold out which means that you have to be able to pay for it to use it. In this way, the commercial companies are getting more and more power in society and over the public space. Åsa knows that the power the politicians have is starting to lose it’s strength. But still she thinks that the question of who has the right to the public space has to be brougth back on to the political agenda. That’s why she chose to put the wall in front of the city hall. ‘Nowadays you almost can’t be a part of influencing the development of the public space where you live. It’s life endulging to influence the public space by yourself and

it’s natural that there’s a rhythm of change from people using it.’ What does she hope will come out of this? Å: It would be nice if society would understand the potential of this kind of expression, like graffiti, street art, posters and stickers or just doodles. It’s both an artistic expression as well as it makes the city alive and gives a chance to create a connection between people. She also wants to discuss the given questions of what art really is and in what way it should work. Åsa is, among other things, one of the founders of the female network ‘Women down the pub’ in Denmark. The network works with women issues, and one of the many things they have done, was organizing a guided tour in the waters of Copenhagen, showing different spots where women have taken important initiatives to strengthen other womens’ position in society. “Hi I am Hariet and I live with my monsters.” “In a world inhabited by evil monsters that fight their wars, that kill each other, that poison the environment, hit children and let them starve, bulley animals and display false realities on tv, you have to create your own reality” Little Hariet felt alone, no one understood her or wanted to understand her. She was a sweet monster amongst nasty and dirty monsters that wanted to eat her. On one sunny day she suddenly saw the beauty of all the things that surrounded her, and found she was not alone. Then she met Ferdinand, her Urmonster and as soon they became best friends, they made the grey streets unsafe. She gave him a new life and so did he. He told her that a lot of nice monsters lived in the centre of the earth, waiting to be called to the earth surface to make the world more beautiful and colorful. Immediately Hariet started to call out for these monsters to save the world. Hariet and her monsters will continue to make the world more beautiful and colorful until no evil monsters are left.
