UK announces partnership with JMI Sports UK announced Monday that it was entering a 15year, $210 million multimedia rights agreement with JMI Sports that will include the potential for the university to expand its media capabilities and will help fund upgrades to facilities across campus. The new deal will begin in April 15 after UK’s 10year contract with IMG Sports expires. This is JMI Sports’ first multimedia agreement. The university will receive an annual payment of $9.1 million in 2015 through 2028. The annual payment increases to $16 million in 2029. The university will also get a $29.4 million signing bonus over the first two years. JMI will receive the ability to have naming rights for on-campus facilities — not including Rupp Arena — as well as radio broadcasting rights. “First and foremost, we want to have a network that our fans can absolutely stay in contact with University of Kentucky athletic teams, the successes that we have, the things that we're doing,” athletic director Mitch Barnhart said at a news conference. “We want our young people to have the greatest exposure that they can possibly have as they participate at the highest level in the most difficult conference in America, and that's really, really important to us.” Among the potential facility upgrades mentioned in JMI’s proposal is a new baseball stadium, which head coach Gary Henderson has promoted publically for the last two seasons. The university’s $29 million signing bonus is designed to help fund it, according to the proposal. Barnhart said another successful goal of the deal is for the athletics department to continue its sustainability without any help from other university department “Obviously we want to make sure we continue to be self-sustaining,” Barnhart said. “That's important as we look to the future of college athletics and making sure that we sustain ourselves and we continue to be a friend and a partner to the university.” JMI has assisted several universities, such as the University of Oregon and the University of North Carolina, in marketability and will continue to do the same with UK along with its multimedia efforts. “This is a flagship property for us,” said Erik Judson, JMI Sports’ chief executive officer. “There is no question that this is a very high priority. But one thing we pride ourselves on a great deal, we talk about how important it is internally. We want every client, whether it's a $15,000 consulting agreement or a $210 million guarantee, to feel as though they're getting excellent service.” STAFF REPORT

Athletic director Mitch Barnhart partnered with other university officials to make multimedia rights and trademark deals that were completed within the last four days.

UK Athletics’ partnerships help future But JMI Sports and Fermata’s lack of connection to state is concerning Athletic director Mitch Barnhart has made several steps in improving UK’s sustainability on and off the field. But Monday’s announcement of the university’s agreement with JMI Sports, along with Wednesday’s announcement of the university’s trademark agreement with Fermata Partners, NICK GRAY shows that his ability to Kernel Columnist adapt will ensure UK Athletics’ health as college athletics heads to an uncertain time. These deals come during the NCAA’s trial against Ed O’Bannon where O’Bannon’s end-game is certain — paying college athletes more than the simple stipend it gets each weekend it plays and the scholarship each athlete earns. Both deals will help UK Athletics’

revenue go up along with its preparedness for what is to come. Barnhart was asked in Monday’s news conference about any connection the deal with JMI had to the NCAA’s legal issues. “I think that our goal is just to keep our nose to the grindstone in terms of what we know we do,” Barnhart replied. “There's decisions that are being made in different spots, whether that's the legal system or the NCAA system, that we'll have to adjust and adapt to.” It seems that UK has already started to adjust and adapt. Barnhart said a goal of the new multimedia deal was to continue to be self-sustaining, something that will be much more difficult to do if Ed O’Bannon achieves the result he seeks. Expanding the revenue by almost double the amount of its previous multimedia rights contract will certainly help that.

But there also needs to be a fair bit of warning tied alongside these two deals. Neither company has experience dealing with a university in the respective fields. JMI Sports has never owned multimedia rights for any company, much less a university who has a large amount of opportunity in that area. Fermata does have experience with athletics organizations and its trademarks, but the partnership with UK is the company’s first university partnership. For a university whose president prides its progress on achieving the “Kentucky Promise”, having its marketing and trademarks handled by out-of-state companies who have little experience with collegiate branding sounds a little off the mark. But the money is right for the university, and that can only be a positive when finances and college athletics goes hand-in-hand. 6.26.14 | Kentucky Kernel | 3

Johnson’s passion help patients back on their feet Department of Orthopaedic Surgery chairman is one of the top knee surgeons in North America By Nick Gray ngray@kykernel.com

It was another regular Thursday afternoon for Dr. Darren Johnson — a full day of surgery in the operating room. He walked into his office after more than seven hours of surgery, mostly on knee injuries, which is his speciality. Johnson’s office is a room that could be confused with a man cave if one ignored the lack of a television and the stacks of medical books on every table. "I operated on Randall’s ankle,” he said, pointing at a autographed picture of former UK football star Randall Cobb. “Then I operated on that guy over there,” Johnson said, his attention pointed toward former Cats linebacker Wesley Woodyard. Johnson averages over 450 surgeries per year as chairman of sports medicine at UK — he estimates about 250 on knees — and his workload was recently honored. Johnson, who is also a professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, was named one the Top 28 knee surgeons in North America last month

by Orthopedics This Week, one of the most read orthopedic publications in the country. “He does a significant amount of complex revision surgery and follows his patients very closely," the publication wrote. "He is very scientific, and is extremely honest about his research results." Johnson’s speciality is ACL injuries, but he said one of the keys to his success is that he’s “a jack of all trades.”

son’s reputation increased, so did the number of patients and his standing in the department. Johnson credits his increased reputation to an improved overall relationship with his patients. His in-house move up the ranks to department chair was unusual, he said. “If you want to move up in my profession, you’ll usually have to go elsewhere and move to other universities,” Johnson said. “I’ve been fortunate to stay here.” Along with surgeries, Johnson is open to helping younger surgeons understand and improve on knee operations, especially on ACL injuries. Last weekend, Johnson hosted six other doctors in Lexington for an ACL lab, where he went through his techniques with ACL surgeries. Even after a full week of surgery, Johnson Dr. Darren Johnson, chairman of sports medicine prefers to spend his days out of the operating room Johnson began his medical studies at feeding his vested interest in the meUCLA’s medical school. Stadium construction on time Construction on Commonwealth Stadium is still on time, 66 days before UK opens its season at home against Tennessee-Martin, according to UK spokesman Tony Neely. Current construction includes the reduction of about 2.000 seats in the upper level, where construction on a new press box and luxury suites will take place. The student section will be moved into the east end zone for the 2014 season, and the allotment will shrink in half to about 5,000. Parking will continue to be taken up by construction areas in the K Lots 4 | Summer Edition | 6.26.14

around the stadium for the near future. The project has grown by $10 million after some surpluses, according to documents presented at the UK Board of Trustees meeting. The $110 million project is now a $120 million project as a result. Construction will continue after the 2014 season and will be fully completed by the start of the 2015 season. UK will play seven home games at Commonwealth Stadium this season. STAFF REPORT

Construction workers fill in a sidewalk on Rose Street near Washington Avenue on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.

Sidewalk construction helps feed electricity to new dorms By Nick Gray ngray@kykernel.com

Joggers and students with summer classes will notice that sidewalks alongside Rose Street and Avenue of Champions have been closed and replaced with dirt, holes and safety cones. The reasons are tied to the new dorms that will open next fall. Construction workers have been working along both roads to help connect electricity lines to the new dorms in Central and North Campus. Rich Riedl, a project man-

ager for the university, is working on the current sidewalk construction and said that this work is not unusual for the summertime around campus. “It’s the time where we can do this without too much interruption to the university (process),” Riedl said. Riedl said that sidewalk construction on Rose Street between Washington Avenue and Funkhouser Drive involves two projects. One project helps with the university’s electrical infrastructure, while the other routes the electrical high voltage to the

appropriate places. The projects were needed with the new dorms and all the other construction on campus, Riedl said. All sidewalks on Rose Street should be clear and normal for the new school year in August, Riedl said. Crews are putting a substation near the sidewalks on Avenue of Champions, Riedl said. The substation is needed to bring power to new residence halls on North Campus. Riedl said sidewalk construction is scheduled to be finished on Avenue of Champions by September. 6.26.14 | Kentucky Kernel | 5

UK agrees to trademark partnership with Fermata

UK continued its universitywide change on Wednesday when the university announced a five-year trademark partnership with Fermata Partners. The costs of the partnership will come from UK Athletics, according to the university. The university will have a five-year option after the initial five-year term is concluded. UK will receive 90 percent of the first $5.4 million in revenue and 80 percent of the next $5.4 million in revenue. “This is another great publicprivate partnership for the University of Kentucky,” said Eric Monday, executive vice president for finance and administration, in

a university release. “This agreement with Fermata strengthens UK’s brand position and will produce additional revenue that can be used to support student success.” UK will be the first university to be in a trademark partnership with Fermata. Under the agreement, Fermata will deal with the daily operations of the university's licensing program, including "coordinating all licensing logistics, contracts, product approvals, royalty collection and business planning with UK’s licensees," according to the university's release. “Our licensing program allows our students, alumni and

the best fans in college athletics to celebrate their allegiance to UK," associate athletics director Jason Schlafer said in the release. "We have built a strong foundation over the past three decades, and as we look to the future, our new alliance with Fermata will help the university navigate the retail marketplace with strong brand management principles while ensuring that we deliver more value to UK’s consumers.” The deal will begin on July 1 and will run through June 2019, not including the five-year option. Recent college graduates see hope in job market trends By Mara Rose Williams MCT

Reid Browning counts himself among the fortunate ones. After graduating in May from the University of Missouri, he's taking a job at Kraft Foods that has been waiting for him since an internship last summer. “I was very lucky with the way that internship and full-time job fell into place,” said Browning, 22, of Kansas City, Mo. Five years after the Great Recession made finding a job nearly impossible for many new college graduates, doors to employment appear to be opening a little wider. “Things are definitely trending up,” said Mike Theobald, the director of career services at Rockhurst University. “Our monthly job postings that come through our career services office are up by 30 percent. There are a lot more job opportunities today then we'd seen in the last couple of years.” That's good news for the 1.8 million college graduates just entering the job market. A recent survey by the National Associa6 | Summer Edition | 6.26.14

tion of Colleges and Employers found that employers expect to hire more new college graduates this year than last. The report said employers plan to give jobs to 8.6 percent more graduates from the class of 2014. The not-so-good news? The national unemployment rate for young college graduates is 8.5 percent, according to the Economic Policy Institute. It was 5.5 percent in 2007 before the recession. Last year, about 260,000 college graduates were stuck working at or below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, according to U.S. labor officials. That was more than double the numbers of minimum wage-earning college grads in 2007. “The fate of recent college graduates is tied to the fate of the overall economy,” said Alyssa Davis, a researcher with the Economic Policy Institute and a co-author of its latest study on the job market for recent college grads. “We are still experiencing such weak demand for workers after 2007,” said Davis, who called the overall job recovery “agonizingly slow.”
