KENTUCKY KERNEL WEDNESDAY, SEPT 16, 2009 SECTION B

Fellow Wildcats, 1893. The year fraternity life started at the University of Kentucky with the founding of the Lambda Lambda chapter of Sigma Chi. Since then, the Greek community at UK has developed the leadership skills of national figures such as US Senator Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Governors Steve Beshear, Ernie Fletcher, and Albert “Happy” Chandler (among others), as well as Lexington’s Mayor, Jim Newberry. In addition to politicians, Ashley Judd, Joe B. Hall, William T. Young, and Joe Craft are proud members of our fraternity and sorority community as well. The rich tradition of identifying and cultivating student leaders still exists today within Greek life at UK. Our organizations were founded upon the ideals of scholarship, service, leadership, and brother/sisterhood to create a community that allows its members to develop their personal skill set to succeed throughout college and into adulthood. Our organizations facilitate the development of relationships and skills that will enable our members to become contributing citizens that will work within our communities to enact the positive change that will lead us in this 21st century environment. As we begin another great year, we’d like to highlight some of the Greek community’s accomplishments

from the past year as well as explain some of our initiatives for the upcoming year. In 2008, the Greek community at UK collectively contributed over 43,000 hours of service and donated more than $255,000 to various charitable organizations. The benefiting organizations ranged from local organizations, such as Blessings in a Backpack and Fayette County Schools, to national organizations, such as the Ronald McDonald House and Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall camps. With events like Sigma Chi and Alpha Delta Pi’s “Fight Night,” the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Step Show, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Chi Omega’s “Greek Sing,” we hope to contribute even more this year. We would like to encourage you to participate in these events to help us raise money and awareness for the organizations receiving aid from our chapters. Additionally, this year, we’re going to expand upon last year’s Greek Street Cleanup, during which we had 800 members of the Greek community cleaning the streets of Lexington after the UK vs. Georgia home football game. We are going to target three Sundays this year – the first of which will be after the UK vs. Louisville home football game. We believe contributing to the community is essential to the success of our organizations, as service is one of the core values of our

organizations. We hope all students will join us in this effort by visiting the Center for Community Outreach in the Center for Student Involvement (room 106 of the student center) and participating in one of their many programs to benefit the citizens of Lexington. The Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, National PanHellenic Council, and the Inter-Greek Programming Assembly would like to wish the best of luck to all students this year! We look forward to working collaboratively with you to better the lives of our university community – students, staff, faculty, and Lexington residents alike. Sincerely, Ben Duncan – IFC , Catherine Blythe - IGPA, Madison Deskins - PC, Kimber Lee Hatton - PHC

Alpha Omicron Pi President: Kadi Boesel Alpha Omicron Pi was founded in 1897 at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York. Alpha Omicron Pi is an international sorority with 185 collegiate chapters in both the United States and Canada. Our color is cardinal, our jewel is the ruby and our mascot is the panda. Our national philanthropy is Arthritis Research. Every spring we host Pi-Athlon as a fun way to raise money for our philanthropy. We also host a Christmas party every year for local underprivileged children. It is a great opportunity for us to give back to the Lexington community, and something we look forward to every December. Alpha Omicron Pi is also proud to say we have placed in homecoming the past 4 years and we have been Intramural champions for the past 4 out of 5 years.

Alpha Phi Recruiter: Stephanie Nordstrom Founded in 1872, Alpha Phi is one of the original members of the National Panhellenic Conference. Alpha Phi was the first sorority to own and occupy their own chapter house. Alpha Phi’s Kentucky chapter is the organization’s 150th active chapter. Alpha Phi sisters across the United States and Canada raise funds to benefit women’s cardiac care, the number 1 killer of women. Through a partnership with SELF-Magazine, the women of Alpha Phi at UK will raise awareness of heart disease and encourage a hearthealthy lifestyle. Alpha Phi is currently recruiting women who share a commitment to excellence and a strong desire to help one another and their community. Alpha Phi’s are leaders, scholars, contributors and lifetime members of a sisterhood that values these traits. Alpha Phi is looking for women who have the vision and leadership skills to create a premier chapter at UK.

CERES President: Lacey Roe CERES is one of the few agricultural oriented fraternities for women with a focus on service and leadership. CERES

roots began in the Farmhouse Fraternity as a women’s club and became an official International Fraternity on October 12, 1985. The University of Kentucky CERES Fraternity was established on April 26, 1997 by a small group of dedicated women. Many girls have found strong sisterhood bonds within the organization and maintain a close relationship with the College of Agriculture. Our involvement with Ag 180 cleanup day and Round-Up keeps the Fraternity close to the faculty and staff of the University. Although CERES is one of the most recently chartered Fraternities on campus, we have won the TUG competition between other women’s Fraternities and Sororities for nine consecutive years. We take great pride in our athletic achievements and try to participate in as many intramural sports as we can. Not only do we participate in sporting events, but we have a focus on our academics as well. CERES has several members in the Honors program and many on the Dean’s List. Our international philanthropy requirements are filled by raising funds for Relay for Life and the Violence Intervention Program for women. CERES is known across campus for there annual Turkey cook and Spring Cook dinners to raise funds for our international philanthropy. The current members of CERES look forward to building a stronger Fraternity and increasing dedication to local community service.

Chi Omega President: Ryan Stinnett Chi Omega takes pride in being the world’s largest sorority and the second largest woman’s organization next to the Girl Scouts organization. Chi Omega was founded on April 5, 1895 at Arkansas University and the Lambda Alpha chapter was installed at the University of Kentucky on March 21, 1914. The UK Chi Omega’s recently welcomed 55 new members, making them the second largest sorority at UK with 199 members. All Chi Omega’s are also very proud to be a supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Last year alone, UK Chi Omega’s raised $15,000 at their annual Golf Classic tournament in the fall and over $100,000 at their Greek Sing event in the spring. This is more raised money than any of the other 172 collegiate Chi Omega chapters nation wide.

During the 2008-2009 school year, Chi Omega won Homecoming Week and Greek Week, tied for first for Greek Service Week, and was awarded the Dean’s Cup as Best Sorority of the year. Chi Omega also values scholastic accomplishments and is ranked second in GPA for the Spring 2009 semester.

Delta Delta Delta President: Katie Fangman Delta Delta Delta was first established as a women’s fraternity at Boston University on November 27, 1888. Sarah Ida Shaw, the inspirational force behind the founding of Delta Delta Delta, envisioned a women’s fraternity that would promote the ideals of truth, self-sacrifice, and friendship. The organization strives to keep that goal alive with its members today. The Delta Rho chapter of Delta Delta Delta at the University of Kentucky recently welcomed fifty-five new members to join in promoting the vision Sarah Ida Shaw held many years ago. These new members complete a chapter of 181 women at the University of Kentucky. The Delta Rho chapter of Delta Delta Delta offers a wide variety of support for its members through intellectual life, social development, and unselfish leadership. The sorority recognizes that education is the primary goal of the collegiate experience and works to provide opportunities for all members to reach their full academic potential and excel both in and out of the classroom. Outside of the classroom, Delta Rho is committed to supporting Delta Delta Delta’s national partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is dedicated to serving children who suffer from cancer and other life threatening diseases. In 2007, Delta Delta Delta nationally committed to raising $10 million in 10 years to fund a patient care floor at the hospital. In efforts to support this goal, Delta Rho hosts several fundraising events on UK’s campus each year. These include Midnight Munchies, a breakfast buffet served in the spring to give students a break from studying, and Dancing With the Greeks, a ballroom dancing competition new to campus this year. All proceeds go to benefit the children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Delta Sigma Theta President: Alaina Hancox Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 13, 1913 by 22 extraordinary women on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence while providing scholarships and support to the underserved. Their desires to educate and stimulate a positive public policy lead them to highlighting is-

sues and solutions for problems in their community. Even today with over 200,000 members worldwide serving through more than 900 chapters, our call to serve is being fulfilled. The Mu Epsilon Chapter was chartered here at the University of Kentucky May 9, 1975 by thirteen collegiate women who answered the call to serve. Being the first African American sorority on the University of Kentucky’s campus, Mu Epsilon has strived to serve our campus, Lexington community and surrounding areas. Our Five Point Programmatic Thrust gives us flexibility to educate our surrounding community on how to handle their finances, health, and providing information so that others can be internationally aware. In 2009, Mu Epsilon was awarded Organization of the Year by the Black Student Union. We were also deemed State Chapter of the Year and received the Social Action Award for the Midwest Region in 2008. One of our major programs is our Talk with ME Series, which is designed to keep campus and the Lexington community socially aware. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. also supports the development of our youth through our national initiatives such as Delta Academy and EMBODI. These programs promote academic and social success among our youth. Today, Mu Epsilon continues to strive toward the ideals our founders placed before us of Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service.

Delta Zeta President: Katie Lenihan Delta Zeta has enriched college women for over 100 years, since its’ founding on October 24, 1902 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Beginning with six founders at Miami University, Delta Zeta expanded to 158 chapters across the country (and Canada). Most

recently, the Alpha Theta chapter at UK welcomed 63 new members, while maintaining a campus total of 173 members. Delta Zeta believes strongly in serving the community, which is one of the founding components of DZ. Alpha Theta members work hard to serve the community and their philanthropy, speech and hearing. Locally, Alpha Theta members volunteer at the Lexington Speech and Hearing Center and Lexington Traditional Magnet School. Nationally, Delta Zeta recently adopted the Painted Turtle Camp in California as a philanthropy, as well as speech and hearing. In support of their philanthropies, the Alpha Theta chapter holds the “Mr. UK Pageant,” which will be taking place on October 7, and co-hosts the “Watermelon Bust” with Lambda Chi Alpha in September. The money raised from these events goes toward the Lexington Speech and Hearing Center and the Delta Zeta Foundation . Delta Zeta also supports and participates in campuswide philanthropy events, such as Dance Blue, where the DZ team raised $14,000 and won the Spirit Award. Another founding element that Delta Zeta believes strongly in is academics. At UK, 8 DZ’s received 4.0 GPAs and 26 girls were on the Dean’s List.

Kappa Alpha Theta

Kappa Delta

President: Katie Wilkerson

President: Sara Durham

One hundred and thirty nine years ago, Kappa Alpha Theta was established at Indiana Asbury, now Depauw University, in Greencastle, Indiana. It was the first Greek letter fraternity known among women! The Gamma Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta was established at the University of Kentucky on October 27, 1945. This fall, Theta was proud to welcome 57 new members, making the Gamma Iota Chapter home to 180 amazing women. Theta is known for being one of the top sororities in academics. Last semester, there were 81 members on the Dean’s List and 31 received a 4.0 GPA. Not only do Thetas excel greatly in scholarship, but they are also take pride in giving back to their community through their philanthropy. Theta’s international philanthropy is CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. Last year, Theta paired up with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to hold Stomp-A-Palooza, a step competition for each sorority and fraternity to perform and compete for the title. This was the first time a NPC organization and a NPHC organization have come together to sponsor an IGPA event! It was a huge success, raising over $4,000 for CASA and the Martin Luther King National Memorial. Theta also volunteers once a month at Shriner’s Hospital and Habitat for Humanity, as well as participating in Dance Blue, CASA 10K, and UK Cats Dance. For the past two years, members of the Gamma Iota Chapter have also been serving on a global level by spending two weeks each summer providing spiritual and physical care to the people of the Dominican Republic through an organization called Medical Ministries International. The women of Theta have a true bond of sisterhood and express this through their scholastic achievements and volunteer work throughout the community. The four things always on a Theta’s mind, the four points of the kite, are Scholarship, Service, Ritual and most importantly Sisterhood. The Gamma Iota Chapter is nationally recognized and was awarded the Golden Kite Award this past year.

Kappa Delta Sorority was founded by four women on October 23, 1897 at State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) in Farmville, Virginia. Kappa Delta has grown into a National women’s organization of nearly 200,000 members, over 200 chartered chapters and nearly 500 chartered alumnae associations nationwide. The vision of Kappa Delta is to provide opportunities and experiences that inspire women to greatness. Kappa Delta’s values are reflected in the motto, “live GREAT!” G-R-E-A-T is a simple acronym to remind Kappa Delta’s of what they share as sisters: Growth through lifetime learning, Responsibility for our own integrity and ethical actions, Engagement in social and civic interests, Altruistic service to others and Truth and loyalty to each other. Kappa Delta, through activities, programs and donations, support four National philanthropies: The Girl Scouts of the USA, Prevent Child Abuse America, Children’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and the Orthopedic Research Awards. In 1999, Kappa Delta created National Women’s Friendship Day for women everywhere to celebrate those special people in their lives. In 2006, Kappa Delta joined the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty to promote self-esteem among girls and women. This year at Kappa Delta’s 58th Biennial National Convention, they unveiled their new self-esteem program called the Confidence Coalition. With its motto, “Go confidently! Go KD!”, this program has teamed up with other organizations like Bonnie Bell and Goody to promote confidence in young women nationwide. Epsilon Omega Chapter of Kappa Delta at the University of Kentucky was chartered on December 17, 1910. With their centennial fast approaching, Epsilon Omega has a lot to be proud of. The KD’s at UK created the Team Green project that promotes recycling of aluminum cans at the University’s football games. Kappa Delta supports The Nest, a local center for women and children. Kappa Delta also supports and holds events with local girl scout troops. Every March, Kappa Delta holds their annual Shamrock Pancake Breakfast and donates the proceeds from the event to Prevent Child Abuse America. The classy women of Kappa Delta live each day to its greatest potential and

Kappa Kappa Gamma President: Lainey Craven The owl, the key and the fleur de lis – all symbols of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the sorority famously known for being “so happy that I amma, Kappa Kappa Gamma;” is an organization of women, which seeks for every member throughout her life bonds of friendship and mutual support. Kappa Kappa Gamma, commonly referred to as “Kappa,” was founded on October 13, 1870, at Monmouth College, Illinois. The University of Kentucky welcomed the Beta Chi chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma in 1910 to their legendary elegant southern home at 238 East Maxwell, where they still reside today. Kappa is now one of the largest sororities on campus, and recently welcomed 55 wonderful new members from the Fall 2009 recruitment. Sharing such famous sisters as Kate Spade, Sophia Bush, Lo from the Hills, and our very own UK alumnae, Ashley Judd, Kappa Kappa Gamma has an undeniable tradition of sophisticated women who succeed in leadership, scholarship and friendship. Many of our own, less-famed active members are leaders on campus and throughout the community, holding major leadership positions within Student Government, DanceBlue, K Crew, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Governor Scholars Program, Global Scholars, Teach for America and many others. Kappa also currently has the most girls involved and serving on IGPA. Kappa members also believe that philanthropy, or mutual helpfulness, is also of significant importance. Every fall we host “Kappa Karnival” to benefit our National Philanthropy, Reading is Fundamental. Additionally, we participate in Race for the Cure and every spring host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner called “Kappasta,” to benefit a family in need from the Lexington community. Kappasta annually brings in over $5,000 for a family in need. Kappa is extremely involved in the campus philanthropy event, DanceBlue with about 10 committee members and 16 dancers. Living true to their ideals, the Kappa sisters also make the grades with a cumulative GPA that is consistently above the all-sorority average.

Phi Sigma Rho President: Lisa Rogers Phi Sigma Rho is a national sorority for females studying engineering and the sciences. We promote life-long friendship, high standards in scholarship, and service to our school and community. The sisterhood was founded in 1984 by Abby MacDonald and Rashmi Khanna at Purdue University. Abby and Rashmi were unable to participate in traditional sorority rushes due to the demands of their engineering program, so they decided to start their own sorority instead. The Alpha chapter was founded with ten members. In the twenty-four year span since then, Phi Sigma Rho has grown to twenty-two chapters from coast to coast. The Epsilon Chapter of Phi Sigma Rho was founded at the University of Kentucky in 1999 and just celebrated its tenth anniversary. This year the Epsilon Chapter will have 29 active members. We had the highest new member GPA for the semester and overall last year. The sisters of the Epsilon Chapter participate in several National and Local Philanthropies. Nationally Phi Sigma Rho supports the American Cancer Society and the Girl Scouts of America. The Epsilon Chapter hosts Bowl-a-thon every fall to raise funds for Relay for Life. We are also currently organizing a spring event with the local Girl Scouts.

Pi Beta Phi President: Autumn Abraham The premier women’s fraternity known as Pi Beta Phi was founded on April 28, 1867, at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. Its 12 founders had a vision to form the first national secret society for women at a time when only five state universities admitted women. Pi Beta Phi distinguishes itself in the Greek world by leading the way as the first organization to form an alumnae department in 1893, the first to organize a national philanthropic project in 1910 and the first to establish an alumnae advisory committee for each chapter in 1913.The founders of Pi Beta Phi created the Fraternity to cultivate sincere friendship, establish real-life objectives and promote happiness. This fall, the Pi Beta Phi chapter at the University of Kentucky welcomed 56 new members extending its active sisterhood to an impressive 184 women. The Kentucky Beta Chapter of Pi Beta Phi prides itself on outstanding community outreach through support of its national literacy efforts. Each year, Pi Beta Phi organizes numerous events to help combat illiteracy—the most well known on the University of Kentucky’s campus

is the First Book Speed Read. Speed Readers are challenged to read as many words as they can out loud from a classic children’s book in 15 seconds. For every $2.50 generated, First Book places a brand new book into the hands of a child in need. Recently, the Kentucky Beta Chapter placed in the top 12 Pi Phi chapters nationwide for Speed Read Fundraising. The members of Kentucky Beta not only spend their time raising money to donate books, but also reach out into the community and read books to the children. In past years, members of Kentucky Beta have traveled to local elementary schools as well as Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Lexington in order to continue to promote literacy. This year, the chapter plans to co-host the IGPA event “Greek Bowl with the brothers of Sigma Pi, on October 14, 2009 at Goodbarn Field. Pi Beta Phi’s portion of the profits from this philanthropic flag-football and cheerleading competition will go to First Book.

Sigma Gamma Rho President: Kaelysia Woods Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded November 12, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN by seven (7) educators. Although we are the last of NPHC sororities to be founded we are best designed. Our founders dedicated the first 3 years organizing the structure and image of our wonderful sorority. When we say we are about Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service we mean it nationally and locally. It took a sisterhood to reactivate our chapter here at UK after 6 years. We’ve proven scholarship by having the highest cumulative GPA of all NPHC Fraternities and Sororities. Lastly, being a service sorority, we often collaborate with our alumni chapter to participate in national projects like Buckle Up America, Project Africare, March for Babies, etc. We are selective about membership recruitment carefully choosing quality over quantity. We are the Magnanimous Mu Omicron Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho. You can recognize us by our mascot the French Toy Poodle or beautiful colors Royal Blue and Antique Gold.

Sigma Kappa President: Mallory Theobald Sigma Kappa was founded in 1874 in Maine at Colby College and is now the second youngest sorority on the University of Kentucky campus. We have girls involved in many student organizations such as CCO, Student Government,

marching band, SAB, The CAUSE, Snowcats, various honor and leadership fraternities and more. Having four philanthropies, Sigma Kappa is always looking to do volunteer work or community service. Whether we are planting trees and adopting highways for Inherit the Earth or participating in the annual Memory Walk for the Alzheimer’s Association, we are always finding ways to help. Sigma Kappa is nationally the largest contributor to the Alzheimer’s Association, donating $5,000 through our philanthropy events. Besides our philanthropies, we are also leading the way for recycling on campus.

Zeta Phi Beta President: Whitney Kelley Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded January 16, 1920 at Howard University by five women who felt that there was a need for a new breed of sorority; a breed that would stand strong on the simple belief that sorority exclusiveness and socializing should not surpass the need to improve on one’s self or the social/natural environment of the day. The ladies of Zeta humble themselves with millions of hours of voluntary community service that are spent educating and assisting the youth, developing society, providing scholarships, supporting structured charities and sponsoring legislation for social change. Here at the University of Kentucky, the Insatiable Iota Mu chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was chartered April 23, 1981. The charter members, Vernida Emerson, Kelly Woodall, and Vivian Landrum, pushed to create a chapter that excelled not only socially, but morally. STAY FRATTY UK Greek men excel in and out of classroom Alpha Gamma Rho President: Ben Hyatt Alpha Gamma Rho (commonly referred to as AGR) is a social fraternity with a professional overtone concerning the development and comradery of young men involved in agriculture. Though largely composed of agriculture majors, the fraternity prides itself on a membership of men from throughout the state (and has several out of state members) that are involved in the rural and agricultural lifestyle. The fraternity is composed largely of young men from small towns that enjoy the laid back, relaxed atmosphere that Alpha Gamma Rho has to offer its’ members in addition to the various social, academic, athletic and career related opportunities that stem from such a brotherhood. Involvement of members in several clubs throughout campus broadens opportunities for brothers to be exposed to potential friends and activities that arise from numerous club officers. AGR would like to extend a welcome to anyone interested in our order and welcome any additional guests, as we also make an effort to be as hospitable as possible.

Alpha Phi Alpha President: Johnathan Mahin Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity Inc, was founded on December 4, 1906 on the Ivy League Campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by men collectively known as the Seven Jewels. Alpha Phi Alpha also holds the distinction of being the first Collegiate Greek Letter organization for African Americans, and is a member of the National PanHellenic Council. The Epsilon Chi Chapter Alpha Phi Alpha was established on April 1 1965, and was the first chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha chartered on a Southeastern Conference Campus. Members of the chapter are actively involved in a variety of on campus organizations and also maintain high grade point averages. Epsilon Chi is also well known for stepping and can be found performing at university events such as We Are UK. Alpha Phi Alpha members are also very committed to serving the broader community. Epsilon Chi members volunteer often, and everywhere. Stomp-A-Palooza, an annual step show for PC and IFC organizations, contributes greatly to the Martin Luther King Memorial Fund, and is done in conjunction with Kappa Alpha Theta, making it the only event of its kind.

Alpha Tau Omega President: Thomas Kurz Since 1865, Alpha Tau Omega has been recognized as the nation’s premier leadership fraternity. The UK chapter of ATΩ, Mu Iota, is no exception. Before actually becoming Mu Iota of Alpha Tau Omega in 1909, the founders at the University of Kentucky were actually a secret society called the Midnight Imps. Upon founding the UK chapter, ATΩ National Fraternity allowed the Midnight Imps to retain their Greek letters (MI) and become the first and only chapter listed out of order. Currently, ATΩ is still a unique and important addition to UK’s campus. Alpha Tau Omega has remained in the top tier in almost every category for the past decade. Whether it is intramurals, academics, social, recruitment, or community involvement, ATΩ has consistently been one of the top fraternities at UK and in the country. With another successful recruitment of intelligent gentlemen, Alpha Tau Omega looks forward to capturing more awards while building a strong brotherhood.

Delta Sigma Phi President: Jack Newton December 10th, 1899 is a date that marks a true change in the world of fraternal organizations. Delta Sigma Phi was founded at the City College of New York by Meyer Boskey, a Jewish man who was unable to join the typically Christian fraternities at the time, and Charles Tonsor, a Christian who wanted something different out of his Greek organization. This something different was diversity, a characteristic that the Theta Mu chapter at the University of Kentucky strives to carry on. The UK chapter of Delta Sigma Phi maintains high standards in an array of areas both on campus and off. At the bi-annual national convention this summer, Theta Mu was awarded the Pyramid of Excellence, the highest honor a chapter can receive, honoring commitments to academics, leadership and alumni relations. In addition to this, the nation’s highest individual award, the E. Allen James award, was presented to Clayton Spiceland, the former president of the Kentucky chapter. On campus, Delta Sig placed top five in athletics, top 10 in grades, had four brothers elected as senators for Student Government and were crowned fraternity champions of Greek Sing. Being a part of the University of Kentucky community is something members of Delta Sigma Phi hold with much impor-

tance and is an ideal passed on with each class of new members. This semester the chapter is excited about fund raising efforts for the Red Cross and DanceBlue, as well as a visit from the Beta Kappa chapter from the University of Alabama. We will also take a trip down to the University of Georgia to see the Cats take on the Dawgs with the Theta Chi chapter. Brotherhood is important to the brothers of Delta Sigma Phi and the Theta Mu chapter here at the University of Kentucky aims to reflect that on a day-to-day basis.

Delta Tau Delta President: Case Fedor The Delta Epsilon chapter of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity was founded at the University of Kentucky in 1924. Over the past 83 years it has grown into one of the biggest and most successful chapters on UK’s campus. Located on South Limestone just south of Waller Ave., the Delt house is among the oldest fraternity houses at UK. In 2005, they received their national award for best Delt Chapter and also won Homecoming. Famous alumni include Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher as well as Jim Host, the founder of Host Communications.

FarmHouse President: Matt Wade The Kentucky Chapter of FarmHouse Fraternity was founded on May 12, 1951 and has continued going strong up to the present day. To truly understand the FarmHouse of today however, you must explore our roots. The international FarmHouse Fraternity was founded in 1905 at the University of Missouri. It began as a club with members coming from primarily agricultural backgrounds. With their strong ideals and solid core values they soon founded a fraternity that set itself apart from other organizations of its kind. The name itself is unique in the fact that though FarmHouse is a Greek organization, it is not identified by Greek letters. The simple name “FarmHouse” is actually an acronym of our founding principles of Faith, Ambition, Reverence, Morality, Honesty, Obedience, Unity, Service, and Excellence. Today, Kentucky FarmHouse still takes pride in the strong values on which it was founded however its’ members are no longer strictly from agricultural backgrounds. Majors ranging from Engineering to Business, to Public Service and Leadership unite with Ag majors in a group that prides themselves as being “builders of men”. In practice this is carried out as we help build each other up intellectually, spiritually, socially, morally, and physically. As the years have gone by, Kentucky FarmHouse has set itself apart from other fraternities by staying true to the values on which it was founded. This is portrayed as we live out our motto in our pursuance of scholarship (25% of members on the Dean’s List), faith and morality (as an active member of Greek Intervarsity with Bible studies every week), social presence (with numerous social gatherings, date parties and formals), and service to the community (by our strong relationships and many hours devoted to groups such as the Special Olympics, the American Heartwalk Association, and Camp KYSOCC).

Iota Phi Theta President: Andrew Foster Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc, is a private, non-profit predominately African-American social service fraternity that was formed September 19, 1963. The major programs of the Fraternity are based on the organization’s purpose: the development and perpetuation of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity and brotherhood. A brotherhood of more than 30,000 predominately Black college educated men, the Fraternity currently has over 198 chapters located in 40 states and the District of Columbia. As Iota Phi Theta continues to grow and strengthen, so will its commitment to make meaningful contributions to society in general, with particular emphasis in the African-American community. Throughout America, Iota Phi Theta has come to represent excellence in all areas. The Fraternity is, and shall forever remain dedicated to its founders’ vision of “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!” Late in the Fall 2007 semester, The UK Colony Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. became a registered organization and was induced into the National Pan Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC). In the first year, Iota was awarded for the highest academics amongst all male Greek organizations as well as the chapter of the year for NPHC. The UK Colony of Iota Phi Theta has held successful events including: political and educational programs, music concerts, tournaments, dinners, and competed in the step show. The UK Colony has sought to “Make a Difference” by helping in the community by way of the NSBE “Walking for Education”, playground building at Booker T. Washington Elementary, Zoo volunteering, serve-a-meal and many more services to the community.

Kappa Alpha Order President: Luke Johnson Kappa Alpha Order founded on the campus of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia December 21, 1865 makes one third of the Lexington Triad. Founded on the ideals of God and being Southern Gentlemen KA’s strive to encompass the ideals of their spiritual founder Robert E. Lee. The Theta Chapter, which was founded here at UK in 1893, recently inducted 27 new members allowing the chapter to grow to 60 members. Theta’s members have been diligently working with their Alumni and have purchased their new chapter house located at 235 E. Maxwell. Outside of KA’s academic schedules they donate annually to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, their national philanthropy, by raising money during their IGPA event Kapture The Flag, along with the help of the sisters of Kappa Delta. KA’s also participate annually in many other community service and charitable events such as volunteering for the Salvation Army in the winter and Dance Blue in the spring. Theta’s members are currently the reigning Sigma Spike Champions and are looking forward to a great year in Intramurals.

Kappa Sigma President: Roderick McCleary Modern day Kappa Sigma was founded one chilly evening in the fall of 1869, as five students attending the University of Virginia in Charlottesville gathered in the room of William Grigsby McCormick, at 46 East Lawn, and planted the seed of Brotherhood. For many weeks the bonds of friendship had drawn these five together; now the need became clear for a formal structure to contain their feelings. Thus, not only did the Founders formalize their friendship, but they also created a fraternity steeped in the traditions of the past and dedicated to the Pursuit of Learning. The new brothers recorded their bond in a Constitution and in an Oath that set forth the ideals and principles to all Kappa Sigma’s today. Beta-Nu, UK’s Kappa Sigma chapter was founded April 4, 1901. During fall rush the chapter pledged 27 men in hopes of adding to our current number of 89 members. Last semester we were ranked in the top 5 GPA of all fraternities on campus along with claiming the Intramural Sports championship. This year we are pairing up with Kappa Kappa Gamma to host our annual Kappa Karnival event. We also are going to pair up with Kappa Alpha Theta to do another philanthropy event entitled Casino Night in November.

Lambda Chi Alpha President: Jason Bridges This year marks a special milestone for Lambda Chi Alpha. Founded in 1909, by Warren A. Cole, the fraternity is experiencing its 100th year of existence. Lambda Chi is noted for being the first fraternity to abolish the pledging system and allow associate members full rights and privileges as active members. This fall the Epsilon Phi Zeta chapter is proud to have 34 men accept their bids and become apart of the brotherhood. Aside from the brotherhood aspect, Lambda Chi Alpha prides on academics, sports and philanthropy. Last year the chapter received numerous awards such as Most Improved GPA, Greek Service Week runner-up and several awards for chapter achievements. The chapter is fully involved with the North American Food, a charity founded by the national headquarters of Lambda Chi Alpha. The philanthropy event, Watermelon Bust, is a popular two day competition in which proceeds benefit Lexington’s local food drive, God’s Pantry.

Omega Psi Phi President: James Harris Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated was founded on November 17th, 1911 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. by three undergraduates and the assistance of a faculty advisor. The fraternity is based on four cardinal principles: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift and after 97 years of outstanding service the fraternity continues to press toward a high-

er mark in the future. The (Wre’Q) Rho Lambda Chapter here at the University of Kentucky has prided itself on upholding the core values of the fraternity while offering service and community outreach to the university and the Lexington community. The Rho Lambda Chapter looks to continue to aid in the advancement of the fraternity and its cardinal principles here on campus and in the community. Many of your favorite UK athletes call the Rho Lambda Chapter home, these include: Keenan Burton, Wesley Woodyard, and Tony Delk.

Phi Delta Theta President: Ben Talley The Phi Delta Theta Fraternity was founded on December 26, 1848 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The Kentucky Epsilon chapter here at the University of Kentucky currently is home to 85 active members and 28 new pledges for the fall semester. Phi Delt at UK enjoys a diverse range of members representing numerous student organizations and individuals from virtually every major. The Kentucky Epsilon chapter of Phi Delta Theta recently was awarded the prestigious Gold Star Award, which is given to only the top 15% of the approximately 160 Phi Delt chapters nationwide. In addition the chapter was awarded the Garry Beach Fire Safety Award for leading the UK Greek system in safety. Phi Delta Theta is also heavily involved in community and philanthropic events. Phi Delt contributes heavily to the ALS Foundation and this past year was involved with the Walk to Defeat ALS here in Lexington as well the chapter sponsored “Big Lebowlski” bowling event to raise money for donations. Last year the Kentucky Epsilon chapter also was the winner of multiple awards at the DanceBlue event that raises money for the UK Pediatric Oncology Clinic. These awards include Most Participants, Largest Fundraiser among medium-sized organizations, and the prestigious Golden Matrix Award honoring the overall best overall group. The Kentucky Epsilon chapter looks to build on the progress of last year to make this year an even greater success.

Phi Gamma Delta President: James Chapman

Phi Gamma Delta exists to promote lifelong friendships, to reaffirm high ethical standards and values, and to foster personal development in the pursuit of excellence. Phi Gamma Delta is committed to provide opportunities to each brother to develop responsibility, leadership, scholarship and social skills in order to become a fully contributing member of society. We emphasize friendship, knowledge, service, morality, and excellence. The Upsilon Kappa chapter at Kentucky excels in all areas of fraternal existence. From scholarship to campus leadership, from philanthropy and social opportunities to intramural sports, we consistently are the best of the best. We won the 2009 Dean’s Cup for the Best Fraternity on campus. We were the 2008 Homecoming Champions, the 2008 and 2009 Greek Service Week Champions, the 2008 Greek Week Champions, the 2008 and 2009 Stomp-a-Palooza Champions, the 2009 Greek Sing runnerup, 2009 Team Triathlon champions, consistently have the best returning member GPA and among the highest overall GPA. Our 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 basketball teams have won many championships. We offer our pledges a $500 check for achieving a 3.0 GPA during their pledge semester, which demonstrates our commitment to scholarship. We have brothers involved with countless campus organizations, such as the Interfraternity Council, Student Government, Student Activities Board, DanceBlue, Gatton College of Business, the Peer Resource Team, and the CCO.

Phi Kappa Psi President: Yohei Sakamoto Kentucky Beta Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity was founded on April 23, 1988 at University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Recently, UK’s Phi Psi welcomed 21 new members and looking forward to the upcoming semester. We have community service set up for us this fall to serve our community in Lexington and other events that we look

forward to this semester. We are currently working towards a philanthropy event in the spring and looking forward to be more involved on campus.

Phi Kappa Tau President: Mathew DeLuc The Phi Kappa Tau fraternity was founded on March 17, 1906 at Miami University in Oxford, OH. The Mother of Fraternities, Miami University also serves as the founding place for the Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, and Beta Theta Pi fraternities. The founding fathers of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity formed the organization as a form of protest against the nepotism of the Greek community on campus and appropriately, but ironically, named it “The Non-Fraternity Association.” Eventually, the group became nationally recognized as The Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. Much like the forefathers of our national fraternity, the brothers of Kappa chapter at the University of Kentucky are proud to offer membership to a diverse group of students. As the 2008 Dean’s Cup and Maxwell Award winners for the best UK fraternity and best national chapter of Phi Kappa Tau, respectively, we strive to recruit real men of character and make it our mission to champion a lifelong commitment to brotherhood, learning, ethical leadership, and exemplary character. This fall, the Kappa chapter of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity welcomes 13 new members, for a total of 59 brothers.

Phi Sigma Kappa President: David Wheatley Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity boasts rich traditions dating back to 1873, when it was founded at the University of Massachusetts. Phi Sig has been an unwavering institution at the University of Kentucky since the Phi Deuteron Chapter was founded in 1926, and has continually produced outstanding campus leaders each year since. Phi Sig is one of UK’s finest up-andcoming fraternities, boasting 61 actives and associates. It is one of the most-improved fraternities academically and athletically in the last year, and the brothers have also worked to increase their philanthropic presence. Greek Olympics, Phi Sig’s signature philanthropy event, cohosted with Pike, will return to campus this fall and the brothers completed over 1,000 hours of community service hours in the last school year. The Phi Deuteron chapter also boasts some of the most prominent leaders around campus in and out of Greek organizations, such as DanceBlue, the Kentucky Kernel, Teach for America and the Center for Community Outreach. By keeping true to its Cardinal Principles of the promotion of brotherhood, the stimulation of scholarship and the development of character, Phi Sigma Kappa will continue to grow in stature and prestige in the coming years.

Pi Kappa Alpha President: Lee O’connor Pi Kappa Alpha has completed extraordinary tasks and achievements over the last couple of years. With the success and leadership that we have received from our upper classmen and brothers, we have reorganized PIKE for both high standards in academics and athletics. Last year, our chapter donated over $6,000 to numerous charities and fundraisers with more to come. Most recently we have held a Pink Party for breast cancer awareness and will team up with Phi Sigma Kappa to bring back the Greek Olympics which will benefit the Special Olympics chapter of Kentucky. We finished with another top five in intramural athletics, with this year looking even more promising. PIKE has continued to recruit exceptional athletes and individuals along the way, this fall pledging over 40 men. With this number of gentlemen, we have reached the 100 man mark. PIKE has presented itself at IFC, philanthropy, homecoming, intramural and Greek events in the past years. We are continuing to achieve more goals and hopefully will be as successful in the future as we have been in the past. PIKE is a fraternity of brothers who are committed to the full development and personal potential of all of our new members and will continue this obligation for our future members.

Pi Kappa Phi President: Alan Herbst Founded in 1904, Pi Kappa Phi became the face of a new generation of Fraternities. Our goal is to rise above and beyond all expectations and achieve the utmost excellence. We introduced Push America, the first Philanthropy to be coordinated and funded by a National Fraternity, and it is now one of the most profitable organizations in the Greek World. Walk with us and be our brother, for our mission is to create a lifelong brotherhood. Pi kappa Phi- Eta Tau Chapter follows the beliefs of its National Fraternity. By joining us in this adventure you will gain experience necessary to help you excel in life-long personal and social endeavors “far beyond the four undergraduate years into a lifetime of fraternal experience”. Becoming a founding father of Eta-Tau, you will establish how future generations of Pi Kapps will maintain a winning Fraternity. Commitment to Leadership, Teamwork, Scholarship, Service and the ability to create a brotherhood “Strong Enough to Care” are the keys to our success. As a brother you will be given the perfect opportunity to be involved in Push America, a philanthropy we as Pi Kapps run, grossing over $8,000,000 in funds by 2010. By joining us in this journey you will become a legacy that will be remembered by the young men who will follow in YOUR footsteps. I am creating my legacy. Are you ready to create yours?

Sigma Alpha Epsilon President: Robert Pelosi Hailing from all parts of Kentucky and much of the country, we, the brothers of the Kentucky Epsilon chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, enjoy an extraordinary brotherhood, which we believe enriches our college experience greatly. SAE can be considered a top Greek organization in many ways. Our chapter boasts the largest fraternity house on campus, also one of the largest in the nation. Athletically, the tradition of SAE is unrivaled, as our chapter has amassed more intramural championships than all of the other UK fraternities combined. SAE’s enjoy success and leadership both during and after their years at the university. Alumni include William T. Young, the founder of JIF peanut butter and large benefactor to the main library, Joe Craft, whose contributions to UK include the new Joe Craft basketball facility, and many others. The gentlemen of our chapter strive to be “True Gentlemen,” and take pride in our conduct on and off campus. SAE is continually searching for new members who will continue to improve the image of our chapter and live by the ideals of our organization.

Sigma Chi President: George Kington The Sigma Chi Fraternity was founded upon friendship, justice and learning. Keeping these ideals in mind, the brothers of Sigma Chi look forward to another fulfilling and exciting year. Brothers of the Sigma Chi Fraternity have always prided themselves on being very well rounded young men; this became evident to the rest of the University as Sigma Chi chalked up the highest grades on campus among fraternities for last spring. In addition we also have been able to continue our dedication to leadership on campus, the best example being former Sigma Chi President Ryan Smith being elected President of Student Government. The brothers kicked off this fall gaining over thirty motivated and diverse pledges. With the semester now in full

swing amid class work, heavy campus involvement, community service, intramurals and Kentucky football games, the brothers have been working diligently on several other projects. With the help of the wonderful sisters of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, we have been organizing the third annual “Fight Night,” a philanthropic boxing tournament supporting the Huntsman Cancer Institute. We are very excited to get the 2009-2010 school year started and the brothers of Sigma Chi wish everyone the best of luck for the upcoming semester.

Sigma Nu President: Heath Towery Sigma Nu is an undergraduate college fraternity with chapters in the United States and Canada. Sigma Nu was founded in 1869 by three cadets at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. The Fraternity’s values are summarized as an adherence to the principles of Brotherly Love, Truth, and Honor. Because of its military heritage, Sigma Nu retains many military trappings in its chapter ranks and traditions, and places much importance on the concept of personal honor. Sigma Nu currently has 180 active chapters and colonies on college campuses and has initiated over 219,000 members since its founding. The Gamma Iota Chapter of Sigma Nu here at the University of Kentucky prides itself with its southern heritage and diversity. Currently the chapter has 89 members making it one of the largest Sigma Nu chapters in the nation. Members of Sigma Nu are very active both within the campus and throughout the community. Each year the Sigma Nu chapter helps hosts the philanthropic event Sigma Spike. Sigma Spike is a mud volleyball tournament held in the spring to raise money for the local Habitat for Humanity. Notable Alumni from the Gamma Iota Sigma Nu chapter are current Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry, former UK basketball player Pat Riley, and T. Jeremiah Beam.

Sigma Pi President: Ryan Barry Sigma Pi is excited about the up-coming school year. The chapter took just under 30 new members during rush week and is excited about getting to know all of them. Sigma Pi is planning a few different philanthropic and community service events throughout the semester including their exclusive ACE Project (Altruistic Campus Experience) Which is a service project geared toward giving back to the University. The chapter has hit the ground running and excited to be very much involved this upcoming school year.

Triangle President: Trevor Marsh Triangle Fraternity is a social fraternity that restricts its membership to undergraduate men in the fields of engineering, architecture, and science. Triangle was started as a club at the University of Illinois in 1906 and formally incorporated as a national fraternity on April 15, 1907. The Kentucky Chapter of Triangle Fraternity was founded on October 20, 1920 and re-founded on November 12, 2005. The current chapter at the University of Kentucky has a membership of around 50 men. Triangle consistently maintains a high average GPA that is above the University all male average and ranks in the top five for fraternity GPA. Triangle is also an organization devoted to community service. The chapter participates in projects and fundraisers that benefit the local community as well as their national philanthropy, Habitat for Humanity.
