■ Fine particle pollution from U.S. power plants cuts short the lives of about 24,000 people each year, including 2,800 from lung cancer. ■ The average number of life-years lost by individuals dying prematurely from exposure to particulate matter is 14. ■ Hundreds of thousands of Americans suffer each year from asthma attacks, cardiac problems and respiratory problems associated with fine particles from power plants. These illnesses result in tens of thousands of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and lost work ■ Power plant pollution is responsible for 38,200 non-fatal heart attacks per year.

Club wants to curb coal By Tilly Finley news@kykernel.com

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or perhaps a mine, it is no secret that a hot coal debate is in the works on UK’s campus. Despite a long tradition of coal dependency at UK, one student organization is looking to turn the tide. UK Beyond Coal is pushing harder than ever for the university to make the transition to 100 percent alternative renewable energy sources by the year 2015.

UK owns and relies on two coal plants, which are permitted to burn 47,250 tons of coal per year, according to UK’s Physical Plant Division. UK’s campus and medical complexes are both

80 percent dependent on coal and plan to increase usage to power the new medical complexes. Becca Barhorst, a political science freshman and the event planning coordinator for UK Beyond Coal, said choosing to use alternative energy sources on UK’s campus would be good for our health, our planet and for Kentucky. “UK needs to take advantage of the opportunity to lead the rest of the state in the clean and renewable energy future,

Barhorst said. “There are incredible benefits in moving towards renewable energy, it will improve health quality for all Kentuckians and create enormous job potential in the renewable energy industry.” UK Beyond Coal students believe 2015 is a feasible date for the university to make the transition to renewable energy sources. Other universities, such as the University of WisconsinSee Coal on page 2

Housing session moved Council to meet over Spring Break By Rachel Bryant news@kykernel.com

Those wanting to address the student housing issue will have to wait to speak their minds. City council members voted at Tuesday’s work session not to place the proposal on the agenda for Thursday's full council meeting, said Ben Duncan, UK Student Government chief of staff. The proposal, which seeks to change the definition of “family” and limit the number of students living in homes off campus, will be brought up at next Tuesday’s work session meeting, where council members will vote again on whether to place it on the docket for the following full council meeting. SG President Ryan Smith said the discussion was pushed back because the wording in the proposal had previously been edited and changed, and the council members wanted to make sure that the information and language used was correct. “It’s just a step in the See Housing on page 2

Cats try to impress scouts at Pro Day By Ben Jones

The last time Sam Maxwell suited up for UK, he returned an interception for a touchdown against Tennessee on Nov. 28. That play capped a breakout senior season for the career backup linebacker who exploded for 81 tackles and seven interceptions in 2009. He was able to do so even though he played much of the year with a shoulder injury, and underwent surgery on a torn labrum in his left shoulder after the Tennessee game. He missed UK’s bowl game and has since been rehabbing the shoulder so he could work out for NFL teams. At UK’s Pro Day on Wednesday, Maxwell finally suited up again. But this time, he was suiting up for Sam

Maxwell. Scouts from about 15 NFL teams showed up to put UK’s seniors through drills, workouts and time them in the 40-yard dash. For a player like Maxwell, who has laid low since his injury, it was a chance to get back on the map. “Not many people know about Sam Maxwell,” Maxwell said. “The only people who know are people who watch Kentucky football.” Maxwell’s training suffered as he had to focus on recovering from his surgery, and he said he knows he’ll have to improve his 40-yard dash time to raise his stock. He turned in a time in the 4.9s. Still, Maxwell feels he’ll be able to help an NFL team if he is drafted. See Football on page 4

Despite strong pitching, softball falls to Louisville By Chandler Howard choward@kykernel.com

Rarely will a team allowing zero runs through seven innings lose a softball game, but such was the case for UK (14-6) on Wednesday night. Though sophomore pitcher Chanda Bell gave up no runs and only three hits through seven innings, the Cats were unable to come up with a victory in extra innings against the No. 18 Louisville Cardinals. The 24th meeting between the bitter rivals ended in a 3-0 loss for UK after eight innings on a breezy night at the UK Softball Complex. “Chanda threw really well throughout the whole game.

Unfortunately, our offense couldn’t produce points,” junior catcher Megan Yocke said. “She kept us in the game long enough so that we had opportunities to win but we couldn’t take advantage of those situations.” The Cats’ first obstacle came at the top of the fourth inning when Louisville was able to advance runners to first and third base without posting an out in the inning. However, UK was able to escape the Cardinals’ leadoff double by first baseman Alicja Wolny to keep the score knotted at zero. The initial hit for the Cats came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Yocke landed a single in center field,

but UK was unable to capitalize on the hit. Louisville worked the pitch count early on Bell, forcing her to throw 48 pitches in the first two innings. But Bell found her stride against opposing batters and entered the seventh inning having thrown 111 pitches. “The amount of pitches Chanda threw is typical for her,” UK head coach Rachel Lawson said. “Louisville is good hitting team so she prepared accordingly for this game.” After holding the Cardinals scoreless through regulation, UK’s 2-3-4 hitters of See Softball on page 4

Actor Corey Haim dies of apparent drug overdose LOS ANGELES — A preliminary investigation into the death of former child actor Corey Haim found he died early Wednesday morning of an apparent drug overdose, sources said. There was no sign of foul play, investigators said, but it was not immediately clear what type of substance led to the death of the 38-year-old actor, who was taken to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank after being found unresponsive at his home. He was officially pronounced dead at 3 a.m. PST at the hospital. The investigation is now in the hands of the Los Angeles County coroner's office. Haim Police learned of Haim's death when staff at the hospital called authorities between 4 and 4:30 a.m., said Sgt. Frank Albarren of the Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Station. "It was an apparent overdose," Albarren told reporters. "Unknown what type of medication." Haim's death comes after the recent deaths in Los Angeles of two other young celebrities, actress Brit-

tany Murphy and heiress Casey Johnson. Murphy, 32, died in December of multiple-drug intoxication complicated by health issues, and Johnson, 30, in January of diabetic-related complications, according to the county coroner. Corey Ian Haim was born in Toronto in 1971. His first film was "Firstborn" in 1984. Roles followed in "Murphy's Romance" and "Silver Bullet" in 1985, "Lucas" in 1986 and "The Lost Boys" in 1987. Haim struggled with drug problems but in recent years had attempted a comeback, starring in an A&E Network reality show "The Two Coreys" with longtime friend and costar Corey Feldman. Times TV critic Robert Lloyd described the show this way: "The premise seems to be this: Corey (Feldman) and his wife, Susie, have welcomed Corey (Haim) into their home in order to make a television show about, um, welcoming Corey Haim into their home.... This arrangement supposedly has something to do with helping Corey H. get his career/life back on track — clearly we're to regard him, and with some cause, as the more troubled of the two." MCT

mentation of these technologies,” Liska said. UK Beyond Coal students also want to raise awareness about other negative aspects of coal, such as the poverty in Kentucky’s Appalachian region. “In the last generation, 60 percent of coal mining jobs in Eastern Kentucky were lost,” Barhorst said. “These coal industries are exploiting our workers by using their labor for a short period of time and then pulling out when the region's coal has been mined, leaving the communities impoverished and unemployed. The coal industry is not helping Kentucky, it is stealing

HOUSING Continued from page 1 process,” Smith said. The work session on Tuesday falls during UK's Spring Break, a time when many students are out of town. Duncan said he did not feel this was an attempt by the council to conceal information from the students. “We commend the council for making sure that they have

The campaign was able to stop 112 of the original 150 coal-fired power plants from becoming a reality, and it hopes to experience similar success at UK. UK Beyond Coal has had about 1,000 students express interest and support to show UK President Lee Todd that students want to see UK make the renewable energy transition, Barhorst said.

Lawless said the committee has heard student testimonies and knows how they feel. The amendment still has a long process to go though, and there will be many more opportunities to speak at public comment sections, Lawless said.

hammered Bell’s pitch over the left field wall for a home run and the lead in the top of the eighth. Shortly after, first baseman Alicja Wolny sent another ball over the outfield wall. UK couldn’t answer. “We are very resilient team and I expect us to bounce back quickly. I am not worried about our toughness,” Lawson said. “We are going to focus hard on our offense and continue to work on the things we have been doing well like pitching.”

Evansville hangs first home loss on Bat Cats By Aaron Smith asmith@kykernel.com

It must have been in the name. The Evansville Aces trumped UK’s ace, sophomore pitcher Alex Meyer, in a sixth inning that saw five runs score against the Cats’ en route to a 8-4 loss for UK (10-2). Meyer, UK’s No. 1 starter, entered the game in the fifth inning out of the bullpen with UK holding a 4-3 lead. He promptly recorded a three-up, three-down inning. He said he didn’t feel uncomfortable having to come on in relief. The game appearance replaced Meyer’s bullpen session. “I was trying to get him a couple innings of pitching,” UK head coach Gary Henderson said. “As good as the first one went, I thought the second one at the time seemed like a good decision.” And then disaster struck. Evansville had its first three batters of the inning reach base when Meyer issued two walks and hit a batter. With the bases loaded, Greg Wallace roped a bases-clearing double that cleared the bases. When the next batter launched a two-run home run, Meyer was removed from the mound after giving up five runs and recording no outs. After Meyer’s bipolar pitching performance, the Aces held all the cards. They held onto their 8-4 lead the rest of the game. UK was unable to answer Evansville’s scoring burst with any-

thing but zeroes. “We didn’t do much past the fourth,” Henderson said. “We certainly left guys on base. We had a chance to capitalize early and often.” That sixth frame represented exactly why the snowballing inning is a team’s worst nightmare. Up until that point, UK looked in control of the game. The Cats scored one run in each of the first four innings, with junior infielder Neiko Johnson serving as a catalyst at the top of the order. “It was just one of those nights,” Meyer said. “It wasn’t the mechanical, it was just me. It’s just like any other sport, you have to come out ready to go and the last couple nights I haven’t been.”

Maxwell said. “There’s a business side you’ve got to get used to. It’s the real world now.”

He was being discussed as a surefire pick during the season, but much of the buzz around him cooled as he recovered from surgery. Now, he’s not sure if he’ll be drafted or if he’ll have the chance to sign somewhere as a free agent. “I’m an all-around guy,” Maxwell said. “I’ve got the talent, I’ve got the character. Just give me the chance.” Preparing for the NFL Draft and a potential career in pro football showed the departing seniors a different side of the game; something many other students who are closing in on graduation might be able to relate to. Maxwell said there’s a lot more stress around the game as he gets ready to work out for teams. “It’s not just fun and games,”

After a disappointing showing in the 40-yard dash at the combine, linebacker Micah Johnson improved his time at Pro Day. Johnson was clocked at just under 5.0 seconds at the combine last week, but ran in the high 4.7s or low 4.8s on Wednesday … Tailback Alfonso Smith had one of the better showings at Pro Day, running his 40-yard dash in the high 4.2s or low 4.3s. He said he’s hoping to show teams that despite a quiet senior campaign, he can still be an effective contributor and is willing to play special teams … Fullback John Conner had one of the best combines of any UK player, and limited his workouts at Pro Day to a few position drills. He said he’s expecting to be picked in one of the later rounds of the draft.

The proverbial break up message. You get it in person out of the blue, a text, an email … and instantly you’ve just gotten the wind knocked out of you. If you’re ALISON the person CARSON who finalKernel ly got the columnist courage to break the news, all you can hear is Martin Luther King’s epic “free at last.” It’s enough to put a smile on your face. Upon receiving the shattering news that you are no longer even qualified as satisfactory in someone’s life, it can feel a lot like a death sentence. Psychologists say those who are dying go through five main stages before they finally come to terms with the reality at hand. If you have gone through a break up anytime soon — you know it all too well. It starts with denial and isolation. Grim, I know. You find yourself locked in your “man cave” listening to somber music like Coldplay, throwing yourself a pathetic pity party. Your friends try to coax you out of the black hole of isolation you’ve thrown yourself in, but its basically impossible. Unless Megan Fox knocks on you’re door, you’re not getting over the ex. In fact, you may even find yourself in disbelief that the other person actually dumped you. If you are clinging on to pictures and staring at your phone in hopes they’ve changed their mind, you’re in denial. It’s best you put the scrapbook of your cutest moments down. Next is anger. Suddenly you find yourself in enraged. Who are they to break up with you? They aren’t even that cute anyways. The sheer adrenaline brought on by the thought of what he did is enough to make you that creepy “Carrie” girl from the horror movie. Instead of going all bananas on the guy, what you should really be doing is channeling your inner “Carrie Bradshaw.” Even if red is your color, your girlfriends, shoes, and Cosmos always trump going psycho on your loser ex. The next stage is where things can get a little embarrassing — bargaining. After a couple of weeks being very single you begin to panic. You end up making over-analyzed, borderline-desperate attempts at convincing the other person you need them back. However, desperate attempts are usually subject of jokes with all of their friends immediately after. Once you’ve realized, you’re definitely not getting her back, depression sets in. The realization that she is now seeing a ripped guy on the football team is as much as you can bear. Not even funny movies and hanging out with friends works. Next thing you know, you look in the mirror and you realize you haven’t shaved in nine days, giving you a slightly homeless look. This would be rock bottom. There is hope. The final stage is acceptance. After two boxes of Kleenex and six weekends of meltdowns at the sight of cute couples, you find yourself being okay. Slowly but surely you find yourself feeling like the old you and are even back to eating solid foods again. No matter what stage you are in the process of a break up, it’s not always easy. You can take time to lick your wounds. Or crash the boards as hard as DeMarcus Cousins on the rebound. Alison Carson is a journalism sophomore. E-mail features@kykernel.com.
